Teixeira: “Everybody be happy!”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jan 23, 2014 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It was easily overshadowed about 12 hours later, but late Tuesday night, Mark Teixiera tweeted a pretty gross picture of his wrist, along with a pretty positive message about his recovery:

Last week, Teixeira spoke to YES Network about his offseason rehab program. As part of the interview, Teixeira was pretty candid about the status of his surgically repaired wrist and the steps he’s going through to get back to 100 percent. He said that he’s still in the process of getting the wrist looser and stronger heading into spring training.

“Yeah, I’m a little anxious about how exactly I’m going to feel,” Teixeira said. “But I know that as long as I’m doing what I’m told, doing what I’m supposed to be doing, that I should be fine.”

Last night’s tweet seems to be Teixeira’s response to any sort of concern that interview might have caused. Here’s a video clip of Teixeira speaking to Jack Curry on YES:

Repost from previous thread: just meandering…..

It remains to be seen how much Tanaka will improve the Y’s rotation, but their lineup still seems to have too many holes, which means that last year’s scoring problems may continue during the 2014 season.
And while I agree the Y’s did the right thing by not singing Cano to a 10 year deal, his bat will be missed. The Y’s are banking on a return to form for Tex, but one look at his last three years, not counting 2013, does not instill much confidence; Jeter is old and should move to 3rd, but even here we do not know how productive he will be at the bat.
The loss of Granderson also eliminates a long ball threat, which I doubt Ellsbury will replace. The Y’s signing of McCann reminds me of prior Y signings, where they signed a player whose recent performance demonstrate a decline in productivity, but since McCann is a LH batter his HR production may benefit by playing at YS.
That leaves Beltran, and I do not know what to expect from him, if the Y’s get a repeat performance of the past 2 years the deal will be good, but it is never a good sign when your team needs to rely on 37 YO players

  2. ac1 January 23rd, 2014 at 7:41 pm

Every year its the same story.
    We are too old…..
Every year we win more than half our games.
In a year of freak injuries last year, we won 84.
Stop with the old team story.

  3. Ted Nelson January 23rd, 2014 at 7:41 pm

“Unless they trade Gardner….Ichiro has no real role on this team”

He’s expendable, but there is a role for him on the roster. He’s still a positive in the field and on the bases. He’s overpaid, but he’s a pretty good 5th OF.

I think the difference between he and Baker is pretty marginal. I could really argue either way between the two.

  4. blake January 23rd, 2014 at 7:43 pm

    Ellsbury CF
    Jeter 3B/SS
    Beltran RF
    McCann C
    Soriano DH
    Tex 1b
    Drew SS/3B
    Roberts 2b
    Gardner LF

    Bench:
    Cervelli, Ryan, Baker, Johnson

    That’s a 13 . Trade Ichiro

  5. blake January 23rd, 2014 at 7:44 pm

Id rather have Baker….can play infield or outfield and mashes lefties. A better bench option to me than a defensive 5th outfielder

  6. ac1 January 23rd, 2014 at 7:44 pm

You are arguing this lineup is no better than last year?
Tex may not hit .300, but he is good for 30 if healthy.
    McCann over Stewie
Grandy missed almost all of 2013 so it is Ellsbury over Ichiro/Wells
Jeter may be a liability in the field but i really doubt he will hit worse than the guys who replaced him all season.
3B? Johnson would honestly be an improvement over what was there in 2013.
I still believe we will get Stephen Drew (i don’t really want him but whatever)

We lost Cano and that sucks, but we got stronger in almost every other position.

  7. blake January 23rd, 2014 at 7:45 pm

Ichiro couldn’t platoon at 3B or 2B…..Baker can. Ichiro really is only useful for his defense unless we are buying his offense vs LHP last year which doesn’t really go along with his career numbers and was likely an anomaly

  8. mick January 23rd, 2014 at 7:45 pm

Thy need a BU1B if/when Tex goes down.
    Baker seems like a lock.
They need versatility and he and Johnson give that.
    So does Drew.
Ryan and Nunez would be non entities.

  9. joeman January 23rd, 2014 at 7:46 pm

if Romine or Murphy can’t beat out Cervelli them they are worth nil

johnson in LF and trade Gardner

  13. ac1 January 23rd, 2014 at 7:49 pm

I am against trading Gardner at this point.
    We have Tanaka
    We have Pineda/Warren/Phelps/Nuno.
I think they can handle the #5 spot.
So unless Gardner nets us a 3rd baseman or someone to help the pen, there is no point.

  14. pete2 January 23rd, 2014 at 7:50 pm

This is a team that looks to be susceptible to injury, at least among position players.

    Soriano is 38
Beltran is 37 and his back up the 40 yo Ichiro
    Ellsbury has had injury issues
    McCann has had injury issues
Jeter is 40 and off a serious injury
Tex is off wrist surgery and those injuries can linger
Roberts is 36 and has been a train wreck
Gardner has not exactly been Mr Durable

Adding another IF’er like Drew would reduce to necessity of Jeter and Roberts staying healthy

They also need a backup at 1B.

  15. MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 7:50 pm

What will they do with Ryan if they sign Baker and Drew ?

    Try to trade him ?

    Who’s gonna want him ?

    He’s signed for 3 yrs.

  16. Ted Nelson January 23rd, 2014 at 7:50 pm

“Thy need a BU1B if/when Tex goes down.
    Baker seems like a lock.”

Baker is unusable against 2/3 of Ps. While he can play a role, part of the downside with him is that he can’t actually be your primary back-up at any position unless you want to forfeit the position offensively 2/3 the time. That goes double at 1B, where offense is easy to find.

  17. mick January 23rd, 2014 at 7:52 pm

His 3rd year is his option at 1m.
    I’m not worried about Ryan.
Would rather have Baker and Drew.

Roberts might not play 2nd v leftys.
Johnson and Drew might not play v leftys.
Baker can play 2nd or 3rd.
Tex will need to be rested and Baker can play 1st.

I would keep him and have a bench of Ryan, Baker, Johnson, Cervelli. Trade Ichiro

  26. Ted Nelson January 23rd, 2014 at 7:59 pm

“Ichiro couldn’t platoon at 3B or 2B…..Baker can. Ichiro really is only useful for his defense unless we are buying his offense vs LHP last year which doesn’t really go along with his career numbers and was likely an anomaly”

Fact check that. It’s right in line with his career production, and he has a reverse split on his career. The numbers against RHP are what’s out of line with his career numbers. Splits are a pretty small sample, the RHP numbers or the LHP number could both be off. He might not be a 104 wRC+ against LHP, but he’s probably also not a 54 wRC+ hitter against RHP.

“Id rather have Baker….can play infield or outfield and mashes lefties. A better bench option to me than a defensive 5th outfielder”

He doesn’t provide depth because he can’t play anywhere 2/3 of the time, and he has been below replacement overall as often as above. It’s fun to isolate his LHP performance, but unless you purely PH him he’s going to have to hit some against RHP.

  27. UpState January 23rd, 2014 at 8:00 pm

    MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 7:53 pm
Does Nunez have any options left ?
    =====================================

He has the option to try and catch & throw the ball.

….hasn’t optimized those options at this level, though.

Put him on the roster; PH him in 2 or 3 blowouts against horrible pitchers; have him go 3 for 8 and sell him elsewhere as a .375hitter !!!

…a good option for the NYY’s and Nunnie, too !

  28. blake January 23rd, 2014 at 8:00 pm

With that roster you’d have two guys that can play infield and outfield in pinches in Baker and Johnson…..and Ryan who could give you plus defense at all 3 infield spots.

    Tons of platoon options.

You could sit Drew vs LHP and play Baker…..you could give Jeter a day off vs RHP and play Drew at SS and Johnson at 3B…..etc.

  33. blake January 23rd, 2014 at 8:05 pm

Ichiro does have a reverse split for his career but it’s fairly even….,in 2013 he was way better vs LHP…..like .753 OPS vs LHP and a .500 something OPS vs RHP.

I just don’t know if I buy that …..he had a .649 OPS vs LHP in 2012. I think it’s likely he will regress to sucking vs all pitching in 2014

  59. Ted Nelson January 23rd, 2014 at 8:40 pm

“Yes this is why he’s the odd man out if they were to get Drew and Baker”

Or he’s part of the reason why they will not sign Baker if they sign Drew. The value of a pure RH platoon guy is fairly limited. Platoons aren’t as clean in the game as on paper and there is some value in having a 5th OF who can play all 3 spots. Not to mention who apparently has a whole lot of marketing value.

“And he didn’t suck vs all pitching in 2013…..Ichiro hit .321 vs LHP last year…..”

He sucked against all P cumulatively. Again, splits are not reliable from year to year. He is as likely to regress against RHP against LHP.

  60. blake January 23rd, 2014 at 8:42 pm

“He sucked against all P cumulatively. Again, splits are not reliable from year to year. He is as likely to regress against RHP against LHP.”

  61. Ys Guy January 23rd, 2014 at 8:49 pm

In an injury emergency beltran can play center, he played there most of his career. then they can call up almonte or something if someone goes on the dl. Ichiro’s ability to play center isnt really worth very much on a team with Gardner and Ellsbury.

Ichiro was a 75 ops+ last year. marketing is about the only real purpose having him will serve.

They can’t waste a spot on the active roster for marketing if they’re serious about winning the AL East.

For all those worried that CC lost too much weight, he says he weighs the same as last year. It’s just muscle now instead of fat.

“I’m actually the same weight as I was last year, just a little more toned and a lot more strong,” said Sabathia, who has been working with his trainer, T.J. Lopez. “This is the first offseason I was able to weight-train and get stronger and not worry about weight loss.”

  76. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 9:18 pm

    Good evening everyone,

Well, Tanaka is on the fold… Good for them… By my calculations this is a team of about 88-90 wins… Of course, counting that Tanaka will be worth every penny of that contract (4-5 WAR)… Still there is a lot of injury risk on that roster, a very suspect IF and some uncertainty in the BP (although I think the BP will be fine in the end).

So the team has improved, but it still has plenty of flaws… Best case scenario: they bought 2 maybe 3 years for the farm to start producing… Let’s hope this time they get it right.

Ichiro has to be the odd man out… With Ellsbury and Gardner he is not only redundant, but pretty much dead weightm

  77. bigdan22 January 23rd, 2014 at 9:18 pm

Not buying the Drew story one bit. Another “according to people familiar with their thinking” story. Remember when the Mariner’s were supposed to be favorites for Tanaka? Now we’re finding that the Dodgers didn’t really like Tanaka after all. (I don’t believe that either. They just weren’t as desperate as the Yanks and Cubs, something I pointed out weeks ago.)

The Yanks may be throwing a bone to Boras. Driving up the price for the Sox, which is where Drew probably will land. It’s not like they haven’t done that before.

About Tex. The last thing I’m worried about is his wrist. He had surgery 6 months ago. His wrist will be stiff and sore for many more months. That’s how it works. But I doubt he’ll re-injure it. No, Tex will go down to a hammy, or an oblique. He’s at point now where he’s just one of those guys who’s breaking down. Hope I’m wrong. They could def use him.

    —————————————————————————————————-

Great great post. Go head to head at each position from last year and we are works apart.

  83. Tar January 23rd, 2014 at 9:23 pm

    Hey Luis :D

  84. j9d January 23rd, 2014 at 9:24 pm

    Worlds not works

  85. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 9:28 pm

    Hi MTU,

Yes, I am trying ;) thanks for asking… I have been real busy and to top it all I am moving ( smaller place, since the family is mostly out), so it has been pretty hectic.

How is lucky doing?… I hope your other family problems have made a turn for the better as well ;)

  86. cheddar January 23rd, 2014 at 9:28 pm

The Red Sox are in a weird spot with Drew. He turned down the $14M qualifying offer because he thought he could get more elsewhere. Now that it appears he can’t, they’re under no obligation to offer it (or something similar) again, but resigning him for less than that makes for a somewhat uncomfortable relationship.

I think 2/$30 might get him for us, as he would have more job security here since our IF prospects aren’t as attractive as those in Boston.

  87. Tar January 23rd, 2014 at 9:29 pm

    Still say no to Drew.

Actually the last infield move I hope the Yankees make…. is adding Alex back to the roster. After all it does make the team better and they are already over 189 so……

That should piss a few people off. :D

  88. MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 9:31 pm

    Luis-

    He’s at about 80-90%

    And thank you for asking.

    Several other issues await resolution.

Glad to hear your Family is safe.

Now do the same for yourself.

    ;)

  89. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 9:31 pm

    Hey Tar!

I think they keep Ichiro until Tanaka signing becomes official… After that I think he has outlived his usefulness! ;) :D

  90. MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 9:32 pm

    Cheddar-

That is a lot of cheddar for Drew.

    ;)

    ——-

I think there’s a one in ten chance of that happening. He should file his motion for a Preliminary Injunction by Feb 1 I believe. Needs to give other side at least 14 days notice for the hearing.

  92. Tar January 23rd, 2014 at 9:36 pm

We disagree Luis…Ichiro is all about what he brings in.

And he is not as bad as everybody says he is either. He has a role on this team.

When people turn on Sori this year ( i think its a matter of when) they are going appreciate having Ichiro around.

Either that…… or I am enjoying busting chops tonight. :D

  93. chicken_stanley January 23rd, 2014 at 9:36 pm

    good evening all. Welcome cheddar!

  94. austinmac January 23rd, 2014 at 9:36 pm

    Cheddar,

    Welcome to our world.

I think 3/30 for Drew. Still doubt it is real. I hope it is.

  95. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 9:37 pm

    MTU,

Good to hear Lucky is doing so well… I hope the same happens on the other front ;)

    Cheddar,

    Welcome to Lohudville

  96. austinmac January 23rd, 2014 at 9:39 pm

    Chicken,

Where are you know? I have to admit I think a little of Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

  97. chicken_stanley January 23rd, 2014 at 9:40 pm

austinmac – lol. I’m still in Fresno, CA but heading home tomorrow… I’ve been away three weeks- just too long!

  98. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 9:41 pm

    Tar,

 We can’t always be agreement.. Although, I must say that you make a good point about his marketability… But in baseball terms, I think he is done… I hope you are wrong on Soriano though… As for busting some spherics…. Be my guest!

  99. Tar January 23rd, 2014 at 9:41 pm

” I’ve been glued to it for the past week.”

The person who (can not be named) basically started this blog, had this famous quote.

” this place is like crack”

    Be very, very careful Cheddar.

J/K good to have you around.

  100. austinmac January 23rd, 2014 at 9:43 pm

    Chicken,

For better or worse, we are your road companions.

  101. MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 9:44 pm

Person who welcomed me to LoHud is no longer with us.

    May he RIP.

I hope to see him again one day.

    ;)

Good news. I hope you haven’t been to “cooped” up.

Tar – as the 2013 winner of the lohud poster that uses the most bad puns, you are evidently looking to successfully defend your title in ’14 :D

  104. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 9:48 pm

I think Arod will ultimately abide by the suspension and take a sabathical year… I don’t think he will ever play again in MLB… Although I think he was treated unfairly… I am still baffled by the decision and how they came up with that number

  105. chicken_stanley January 23rd, 2014 at 9:49 pm

    austnmac – thanks.

  106. MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 9:50 pm

    Glenn-

W/o my help you never would have made past the 1st post.

    :)

  107. yankeefeminista January 23rd, 2014 at 9:52 pm

What Tar means is he hopes you are a free-range chicken. :)

  108. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 9:53 pm

    MTU,

Was that person our own grumpy GB7?

    I miss him too

  109. chicken_stanley January 23rd, 2014 at 9:53 pm

Mike – Yep… i’d still be in a spring training thread… wondering where you guys all went. The “chciken alerts” have saved me many times :)

  110. MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 9:53 pm

    YF-

There is no question Glenn is free-ranging.

    ;)

  111. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 9:55 pm

    MTU,

Without your help, chicken would still be stuck in hsi first thread… He does need your Chicken alerts! ;)

  112. MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 9:55 pm

    Indeed Luis.

The greatest Bad punster to ever come down the pike.

All others bowed to his greatness.

I’m just having fun pun, and looking out for your health, of course.

Hi Luis, I owe you an email.

  117. Tar January 23rd, 2014 at 10:00 pm

I just went back to read the last thread. this is really funny

“If you’d like to stop biting my ankles like a little weiner dog and actually discuss something, let me know.”

The funniest part is…… I actually had a wiener dog bite my ankle. LOL

  118. MTU January 23rd, 2014 at 10:02 pm

    Luis-

Your countryman is looking for a place to land.

His license will not be accepted in the US.

Best he can do is Physician’s ass’t.

Pisses me off that a Surgeon with his experience and credentials is treated so poorly.

Next time I see him round I’m going to recommend either Costa Rica or Belize to him.

    ;)

  119. luis January 23rd, 2014 at 10:02 pm

    YF,

    Yes you do! ;)

  120. chicken_stanley January 23rd, 2014 at 10:02 pm
