Jeter says Yankees ready to move on without A-Rod

From the AP down in Tampa…

Alex Rodriguez, Derek JeterTAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Derek Jeter says the New York Yankees have no choice but to move forward now that Alex Rodriguez has accepted his suspension for the 2014 season.

Rodriguez ended his extended and acrimonious fight with Major League Baseball on Friday, withdrawing a pair of lawsuits that were filed in an attempt to overturn a season-long ban for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal — the longest penalty in the sport’s history related to performance-enhancing drugs.

Jeter spoke Monday at the Yankees’ minor league complex. He said he has texted with A-Rod since the lawsuits were dropped.

Rodriguez was given a 211-game ban last year by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig that was reduced to 162 plus the 2014 postseason by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. A-Rod sued MLB and the union in federal court in Manhattan, claiming the arbitration process was flawed. Rodriguez’s lawyers filed notices of dismissal in both cases.

“He’s not here for this season, so we’re going to have to find ways to win with the team that we have,” Jeter said Monday at the Yankees’ minor league complex. “It’s a complicated situation, but it’s pretty much played out. That’s what has happened.”

Jeter has texted with Rodriguez since the decision to end the lawsuits came about.

“You’d have to ask him how he feels about it, if he’s glad that it’s over with,” Jeter said. “It’s a situation that he has to deal with. Now it’s over and it’s done with, and we’ll move on from there. But you’d have to ask him how he feels about that.”

Rodriguez will be 39 when eligible to return in a year. The Yankees owe him $21 million in 2015 and $20 million in each of the final two seasons of a record $275 million, 10-year deal.

NOTES: Jeter, limited to 17-games last season after breaking his ankle during the 2012 AL Championship Series, started his fourth week of on-field work. … RHP Michael Pineda, a fifth-starter candidate sidelined the past two years by a right shoulder injury, is throwing off a mound. “I’m feeling 100 percent right now, and my body is in perfect shape,” said a trimmed down 260-pound Pineda. “Everything is in the past. I’m ready to go.” … C Francisco Cervelli, who broke his right hand April 26, and then was suspended for 50 games on Aug. 5 following MLB’s investigation of the same Florida anti-aging clinic that ensnared Rodriguez, is also doing early work. “Last year was a disaster, and we just take the positives out of everything for being a better person and a better player,” Cervelli said.

Is wanzies still around to shed some light on these Ervin Santana rumblings? I seem to remember him indicating the Yanks might go after Ubaldo.

  2. joeman February 10th, 2014 at 6:05 pm

miss the days of going down to ST..went for 8 years in a row my brother in-law had season tickets when the played in Ft Lauderdale up to the time they moved to Tampa

  3. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 6:05 pm

This has to be a better year injury wise than last year.

    Doesn’t it ?

    ;)

  4. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 6:07 pm

    Stones-

    Unfortunately not.

But he did tell me before he departed that the Yankees were very high on Ubaldo.

Much more so than most folks here are.

    ;)

  5. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 6:09 pm

The general principle that the Yankees are following is to load up on pitching w the hope of developing a surplus to trade for other items they might be in need of.

Wanzies shared that w me too.

    ;)

Shame to hear he is gone. He was on it this offseason, especially during the Tanaka fiasco when there were strong guesses that Major League Dodgers Baseball would sign him. I would have liked to hear what he thought of Pineda and what he would expect from Ellsbury.

  7. Against All Odds February 10th, 2014 at 6:17 pm

    Why did he leave??

  8. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 6:18 pm

    Stones-

    He talked about Pineda.

Said the Yankees are expecting big things from him this year and want to find out what they’ve got.

We never got to Ellsbury but I can tell you that he said all along that 189 was a goner.

He was sure right about that.

    ;)

    AAO-

I think he grew weary of the persistent negativity.

And I think he also felt that he’d accomplished a purpose and it was time to move on.

  10. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 6:22 pm

I was very flattered that he chose to share some of his insights with me.

And felt a measure of trust w me.

At least I’m good for something.

    :)

In many ways then, he is like a smart british tv show, run a few episodes, know when to get out (unlike a lot of tv shows that throw you extra seasons that are pointless).

  12. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 6:23 pm

    CB was like that.

Terrific poster. Full of unique baseball insight.

A real student of the game.

I was very sorry when he decided to pack it in too.

    There have been others.

That he did. He saved me from fixating on that number this offseason :)

I can’t prove it but I think Mr. Wanzies was very connected.

    That would be nice.

He would be most welcome as far as I’m concerned.

  17. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 6:29 pm

Wanzies allowed to share a certain portion of what he told me.

    And I have done so.

    :)

  18. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 6:34 pm

Over the years there have been many posters who I learned a great deal of baseball from around here.

Can’t even begin to mention them all.

But I will mention a few:

SJ, Randy, GB, CB, Wanzies, Pat M.

All people who know a lot more about the game than I ever will. Who have a special perspective.

It was a privilege having a chance to speak w and know all of them even just a little.

    :)

I can tell you that he said all along that 189 was a goner.”

I don’t know that it is to be honest. It seems they are still in reach of 189 if they had a bad first half and wanted to blow things up by trading Kuroda (no NTC that I can see), Soriano (would need to waive NTC), Gardner, Robertson, Roberts/Johnson, Thornton and replace them with league minimum guys.

Obviously, if they sign Ubaldo and/or Drew that puts them out of reach of 189 and it truly is a “goner” . For now its on life support in ICU and the prognosis is grim but the Dr’s have not pronounced yet.

Try not to base your entire opinion of Tanaka on 1game. He normally pitches with a pretty good pace.

Michael Pineda said Monday that he enters spring training at “100 percent.”

“I’m going to compete for the rotation,” Pineda said. “I’m the same Michael Pineda. I’m 100 percent now and my body is in good shape.” Pineda, of course, hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2011 due to shoulder issues, but he’s feeling good now and will battle it out with David Phelps, Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno for the final spot in the Yankees’ rotation. The 25-year-old certainly has the best upside of the group if he can show that he’s got his velocity back.

Tanaka San looks very good . . . but we already knew that. Will be fun to see how he fares against Cabrera with the bases loaded.

  53. Pat M. February 10th, 2014 at 8:54 pm

I’ll say by June people in NY and her at the LoHud will be ooohhing and Ahhhhing about the exploits of Michael Pineda. The big cat brings gas, high octane gas. You hear things from guys who faced him and the comments are with high reverence. Forget the jug guns, all you have to do is just listen .

  54. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 8:59 pm

    Pat M.-

All he has to do is stay healthy.

    Best #5 in baseball.

Of course we both know he isn’t a #5.

    ;)

  55. Pat M. February 10th, 2014 at 9:02 pm

MTU….Once he round into shape he will be the Yanks most dominating starter by far and he’ll be the one guy nobody will want to dig in against.

  56. MTU February 10th, 2014 at 9:06 pm

    Pat M.-

He’s had about 2 years to get that arm healthy again.

I’m sure the Yankees are anxious to see some return on their investment.

Long term labrums are tricky but the Yankees have done all they can.
