Mostly quiet (with a little BP) on Day 1

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 14, 2014 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Predictably quiet so far here at Steinbrenner Field.

The clubhouse is about to open to the media, so we might get a little bit of information soon. For now it’s been a lot of watching guys come and go, including a random position player or two (I just learned what new guy Scott Sizemore looks like).

Brian McCann, Austin Romine and Francisco Cervelli have each spent time in the indoor batting cages with Kevin Long. Didn’t look like a real official round of batting practice, but they were certainly getting some work done on Day 1.

Mariano Rivera’s old locker goes to … Masahiro Tanaka. Dave Robertson next door in his same old locker. #yankees

A-Rod’s locker is vacant. No one gets it.

  3. Ys Guy February 14th, 2014 at 10:08 am

i rarely mention Pitchers and Catchers reporting day in the winter for this very reason. Nothing happens on P&C report day, except Girardi’s presser. For me, I get through the winter thinking about the first day of ST games.

  4. Ys Guy February 14th, 2014 at 10:13 am

The reporting on locker assignments shows you just how boring P&C’s report day is.

  5. Ys Guy February 14th, 2014 at 10:16 am

Look at that! 4 college educated professional writers tweeting who got which locker in Spring Training! :)

  6. blake February 14th, 2014 at 10:16 am

I think they should get a giant pink elephant and sit it in Arod’s locker

Did the spirit committee pack each locker with those nasty little heart candies that taste like chalk blended with bath soap, “Be Mine”

Ben Badler scouting report on Diaz. (January 2013 h/t RAB)

“Age questions and unblocking issues aside, scouting reports on Diaz’s talent remain modest. Though Diaz has played shortstop in Cuba, scouts have said he doesn’t have the lateral range, quickness or footwork to stay at the position.

Diaz has shown some ability with the bat, hitting .315/.404/.500 in 313 plate appearances for Villa Clara in his final season in Cuba, albeit in a high-offensive environment in which he ranked 30th in the league in OBP and tied for 20th in slugging.”

FWIW, Pineda looks like he is in very good shape.

I’m mostly pretended like Pineda doesn’t exist so as to not get my hopes up…..but he’s a big X factor….a guy that could take the stafff from solid to excellent if he can regain his 2011 form or close to it.

  12. blake February 14th, 2014 at 10:28 am

Braves sign Teheran to a 6 year extension. Risky one….but he looked dang good in the 2nd half last year. They are betting that’s who he is I guess..

$5M AAV, only one year of free agency being bought. Doesn’t seem all that risky. That kid is the goods.

“$5M AAV, only one year of free agency being bought. Doesn’t seem all that risky. That kid is the goods.”

whats the deal? I havent’ seen the money yet?

  16. blake February 14th, 2014 at 10:36 am

reports are that its a 6 year deal with 2 club options as well….if so….great deal for Braves.

  17. Hassey February 14th, 2014 at 10:42 am

We are gonna win the AL this year…cue the salt trucks up the Canyon of Heroes!

  18. blake February 14th, 2014 at 10:42 am

Hughes is on the radio. Said last year he was constantly changing things and always making adjustments. Said the Twins have talked to him about keeping things simple

  19. braeburn February 14th, 2014 at 10:44 am

“.a guy that could take the stafff from solid to excellent if he can regain his 2011 form or close to it.”

i think pineda could recapture his past success fairly quickly if they don’t try to force him to learn a better change up too quickly.

if they go with his strengths he could get some success quickly if he’s healthy. the question will then be how long he says healthy .

there’s only one way to find out.

  20. blake February 14th, 2014 at 10:46 am

interestingly AJ said the exact same thing when he left the Yankees and went to Pittsburgh…..that they were constantly screwing around with him and when he got back to the basics with the Pirates he did better.

A lot of questions about my #Rockies’ Tulo-Jeter tweet. Here’s post on whether #Yankees could be fit. I don’t think..http://bit.ly/1iVXhA

    great deal for braves

  24. DONNYBROOK February 14th, 2014 at 10:55 am

Tanaka just finished bullpen session with Rothchild and Cervelli. Yanks obviously are counting on a lot out of him. Rothchild already making “adjusments” with Tanaka. They are Hitting the ground running on Day 1.

Sabathia says he just weighed in at 275 – lowest since Cleveland

  26. DONNYBROOK February 14th, 2014 at 10:58 am

These “kids” are certainly getting security, but in today’s market, that = chicken feed. Chamberlain getting $2.5 Mill is proof positive.

  27. DONNYBROOK February 14th, 2014 at 11:00 am

CC looked lighter than that in the Tux. Must have fallen off the wagon between Then and Now.

  28. AAA February 14th, 2014 at 11:04 am

They’ll need some young kids at the upper levels to take a big step forward….then be prepared to trade them to the Rockies.

  29. blake February 14th, 2014 at 11:12 am

“They’ll need some young kids at the upper levels to take a big step forward….then be prepared to trade them to the Rockies.”

pick any 4 and we’ll pick up his contract too……

  30. blake February 14th, 2014 at 11:13 am

    Bob Nightengale ?@BNightengale 13m
Sabathia says he blames himself for #Yankees failure to make playoffs last year

that’s a good leadership statement and he was a big part of it……but so was the Astros offense they threw out there most of the season.

  31. AAA February 14th, 2014 at 11:15 am

pick any 4 and we’ll pick up his contract too……

    =====================================

Never any question that the entire contract would be picked up. Rockies would have the best of both worlds. All the cash gone, all the prospects coming. Honestly don’t think the Yankees have 4 that could get it done right now. Don’t even think they’re close. However, that may not be the case 8 months from now.

  32. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 14th, 2014 at 11:15 am

Happy Love Day to all! More snow on the way here and Olympics still on, so I’m good to go. I truly like to celebrate each day for itself – probably a function of realizing that time seems to go in a blink once you’re past 20, haha – and I find that worrying about the future interferes with my ability to live in the present. So I just don’t do it. And these days, the future to me is as early as the next day!

    Enjoy the day all.

(As an aside, I feel that we are rushed through life as a necessary evil of that thing called retail, where you now can sing Christmas carols in a store in October, and you damned well better buy your winter wardrobe in the summer since summer clothes disappear in the spring! So I fight back by insisting – to myself – that I will pay attention to each day as its own entity, as much as is humanly possible.)

And oh yeah. GO PITCHERS AND CATCHERS!

    :)

  33. blake February 14th, 2014 at 11:17 am

If Tulo were made available…..who would be after him besides the Yankees? I think most of the big dogs except maybe Texas and the Red Sox…..the contract would keep a lot of the smaller market clubs away but I think the market would be pretty competitive.

NHL itself for decades has played a big part in ensuring its players get the most advanced clinical care when it comes to head injuries, says UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program Director and long-time NHL consultant Dr.
