I would try to write something really meaningful here at the top, but I’m pretty sure you’re only going to care about the video above.

Today the Yankees starters threw their sides in the old bullpen next to the main field here at Steinbrenner Field. The access there is much, much better, so I was able to get some video of Masahiro Tanaka. The sunlight was brutal and made it tough to set the lighting just right, but it should give you some idea of what the ball looks like coming out of Tanaka’s hand.

He was throwing right next to Hiroki Kuroda, with CC Sabathia a couple of mounds away.

As for other notes from this morning…

Brendan Ryan· Brendan Ryan was here this morning, and he talked a lot about the idea of filling in at shortstop when Derek Jeter needs a day off. Ryan said he’s expecting quite a few boos from fans who show up expecting to see Jeter play a game in his final season, only to discover Ryan is getting the start that day. Tough situation to be in.

· Asked a Yankees talent evaluator about yesterday’s batting practice sessions over at the Himes complex. A surprising name that stood out over there was Chris Leroux, a tall right-hander in camp on a minor league deal. Apparently his fastball showed some impressive life with good movement. The evaluator said he was reminded of A.J. Burnett (without the same velocity).

· Random arrival today: infielder Yangervis Solarte. I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point where I can spell his name without looking it up.

· For some reason, Francisco Cervelli is not listed in either batting practice group this morning. He is, however, listed for other drills. Cervelli said he’s perfectly fine, no physical issues at all.

· Ivan Nova and Bruce Billings threw live batting practice this morning. Nova pitched to Gary Sanchez, Billings pitched to Pete O’Brien.

· Today’s sides:
CC Sabathia (to Austin Romine)
Masahiro Tanaka (to John Ryan Murphy)
Hiroki Kuroda (to Brian McCann)
David Herndon (to Francisco Cervelli)

· Among the listed guest instructors for this year: Willie Randolph, David Wells, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Hideki Matsui, Reggie Jackson, Ron Guidry, Goose Gossage

Wow. What a collection of guest instructors.

    :)

“Nova pitched to Gary Sanchez” Love this and the group of instructors as well.

Chad, thanks for the updates! I know you have a lot to handle with MLB ST, but I’d love to see a future report on some of the MiLB pitchers at the minor league complex coming back from injury: in the Yanks’ estimate, how are they progressing and what kind of innings Yanks ideally expect them to accrue this season. For example, beyond guys like ManBan who are in camp, the kids like Rookie Davis, Ty Hensley who both have said that they are feeling good… Campos and innings and any news on Clarkin? Thanks.

yankeefeminista – “It serves the Yankees to keep O’Brien at C as long as they can.”

Given the commitment that’s been made to McCann, the potential ceiling for Gary Sanchez, the lack of corner infielders in the system, and the size of O’Brien, why do you think this?

    ___
Because even if he can catch marginally, he has more value and more trade value. And with that bat, why wouldn’t you try to have him catch. He may grow too big but he has pretty good athleticism. Also, how do we know that McCann will remain healthy or how long he will be able to catch, ditto Sanchez with health and projections (fingers crossed)…

the mariners have opened a state of the art baseball facility in the dominican republic. with cano and rodney, they have added local dominican heroes . the yankees don’t seem to be going after dominican players. maybe that’s just my perception. if they aren’t though, i think that would be a big mistake.

    ——————

Yanks have had a facility in the DR for a few years now. And they’ve always recruited there really well. The problem now is that it’s much harder to stockpile young talent over there because of the MLB spending limits.

We have a haul of recent DR IFAs.

I’m going to echo what CountryClub said. The Yankees are really active in the DR. I saw Nardi Contreras earlier this spring and he said he’d just spent several weeks at the Yankees facility in the Dominican where the team has more than 60 pitchers (and he said they seem to add a new one every day). They’re pretty active in the Dominican. Pretty much every team is, it’s just that when a team like Seattle builds a new facility or signs a big name guy it feels like that team is ahead of everyone else. The Yankees are definitely active down there.

Are we now committed to referring to JR Murphy as John Ryan Murphy?

Did he get tired of the Dallas references?

  8. Shame Spencer February 18th, 2014 at 11:02 am

The fact that Nardi Contreras is talking to 60 pitchers will not illicit confidence from many lol. I can’t wait until Chip sees that.

  9. MTU February 18th, 2014 at 11:03 am

If we have a problem it’s not so much in acquiring talent as it is in developing it.

    Hike day today.

    Time to go soon.

  11. yankeefeminista February 18th, 2014 at 11:11 am

Nardi is special pitching instructor at the Yankee Dominican complex. He is very much in that mix.

  12. sjb23 February 18th, 2014 at 11:11 am

yankeefeminista – very good points, thanks for the response. It just seems to me that the club is stockpiling catchers and creating a log jam (McCann, Cervelli, Romaine, Murphy, Sanchez – it’s going to be tough to keep 5+ catchers on the 40-man roster) and yet are very thin in the infield at every level. I’d like to see O’Brien as an option for 3B/1B in 2015.

Chad – would love to see updates on Jose Campos as ST progresses. As a side note, do you have any idea what happened to nyyfans.com? I haven’t been able to access the forum for weeks now.

If we have a problem it’s not so much in acquiring talent as it is in developing it.

MTU, I agree with this. In your opinion, is it because they don’t have enough patience, don’t provide enough opportunities at the ML level, or something else? I can’t quite put my finger on it.

  15. yankeefeminista February 18th, 2014 at 11:18 am

sjb23, I see your point, but it is a good idea to stockpile at premium positions because then you have surplus, which you may need if injuries/players not working out at said position occurs and of course better to trade a premium position player, so that you will get more back in a trade. Yanks have been stockpiling pitchers, catchers and CFs b/c they all have more value. Any of those C’s that don’t work out can likely be converted to corners in IF or Of (RF). O’Brien could play RF as well; he’s athletic enough and he has a very strong arm. We are also starting to develop a bunch of SS’s in lower minors; so, there’s another premium position that we are now trying to develop at. Hoping to see Avelino among others have a big year. And let’s see what Culver does in a large sample size at high A.

John Ryan Murphy sounds more like a BC Eagles winger to me.

But seriously, he has always been called John Ryan, so guess he wants to be called what is most familiar to him. Looks like his Dad not his mom (cuban) named him though. Why not Juan Ryan? ;)

  19. MTU February 18th, 2014 at 11:25 am

    sjb-

IMO it is mostly because the Yankees are a “win-now” Team.

So, in that sense, limited patience.

I also believe that the model has taught the Yankees to value experience over potential.

And they have always had money to throw at problems so development took a back seat.

They treat all prospects as suspects.

I really do not believe the Yankees see their Farm as anything more than a supplement to other operations.

And never as a primary source of talent the way some small market Teams do.

I guess you could say they aren’t as committed to the Farm as maybe they could and should be.

They seem to be adding instructors and scouts these days.

Newman should have been gone an eternity ago.

My apologies for the long post.

    Got to run.

    :)

    DONNYBROOK February 18th, 2014 at 10:06 am
    - YANKEE BARE MINIMUMS -
    (1) McCann – 21 HR – 89 RBI – 65 RUNS
    (2) TEX – 25 HR – 101 RBI – 85 RUNS
    (3) ROBERTS – 8 HR – 60 RBI – 65 RUNS
    (4) JOHNSON – 15 HR – 65 RBI – 60 RUNS
    5) JEET – 10 HR – 60 RBI – 92 RUNS

Your bare minimums seem reasonable base on the past, but since Ellsbury is not on your list, I assume that his stats will be the biggest enigma of all. History leaves a big question mark with him as he did have a big power year in 2011. The wind tunnel and the short right field porch may
be just what he needed or with Gardener, both will be the table setters leaving the long ball to others.

  33. bigdan22 February 18th, 2014 at 12:38 pm

Saw some talk here about Pete O’Brien. Not a fan at all. Has power, yes but is not particularly young. Struck out four times for every walk in Tampa last year. Year before hit .200 in Staten Island. Horrific strike out to walk ratios don’t play well as you move up.

Wouldn’t mind seeing him moved to OF though. For a player who’s athletic ability tells you his bat will be his calling card, requiring him to devote extensive time to his defense like catching does I don’t think is good for development. And the Yanks are really light on outfielders in the lower levels. I can only think of one, Judge, of any note. They have a wave in AA/AAA now but could use a second wave a year or two behind.

  34. tomingeorgia February 18th, 2014 at 12:39 pm

Well worth the bet, btw. I dunno how many games over 90 this team can win but I think they’ll definitely win more than 83.5.

  40. yankeefeminista February 18th, 2014 at 12:45 pm

bigdan, with O’Brien I think they’ll try him in multiple roles. As I said, I think his bat and arm would play well in RF, but with 3B open and C always a premium position, I’d guess they like the versatility of having him play multiple positions rather than pigeon-hole him. But unless he can save runs, doubt he will be in the Yankee plans at C, even if they say otherwise. Still, I think they will give him reps at C as well as 3B at least in the immediate future. And yes, his K’s/lack of plate discipline are a problem. Let’s see what they do about that. I know they have him working on it, FWIW.

  41. blake February 18th, 2014 at 12:46 pm

The Yankees were terrible last year and won 85 games…..I feel that the over on 83.5 is a lock because I think the team is better than that and also because there is no way they will let Jeter go out a .500 team……they’ll trade in July like they did last year and make a run either way and it should push them above 83.5 even if thing to terribly wrong……this team is carrying a lot of risk…..but A LOT would have to go wrong for them to not win 84 games IMO

  42. yankeefeminista February 18th, 2014 at 12:46 pm

A little long, but a pretty good article on farm systems and player development. With respect to the question of whether it’s talent acquisition (scouting) or player development (coaching and instruction) that counts the most, this article seems to stress the latter. The gist here is for an organization to get the most out of its talent, you have to examine each player individually and provide a development plan that is really customized to them.

What I thought was the most interesting was the third tenant of the Angels new approach: keeping coaches on the same page throughout the system. The thinking here is if you have a coach in A ball who has one approach to hitting and a coach at AAA with a completely different approach, prospects get frustrated and will lose trust in all the instruction being provided. When a prospect loses trust in an organization’s instruction, he reverts to his high school mentor holding on to the same bad habits and thus never really developing.

Makes me wonder about the Yanks hitting instruction. If in the minors you are being taught to hit to all fields but in the majors you have coach that de-values contact in exchange for power how does all that all mesh?

Finally some controversy – but I lost the bet. I did not have Kevin Long starting it. Thought it would be Brendan Ryan stealing some of Jeter’s gear and selling it (a la Ruben Rivera).

Maybe but in the end all he has to do is just continue to hit and produce as he always has.

  63. braeburn February 18th, 2014 at 1:11 pm

wow lloyd mcclendon really ripped long a new one.

he even bashed him as a self proclaimed hitting guru:

“I’m a little surprised that Kevin Long is the spokesman for the New York Yankees. I wonder if he had any problems with Robbie when he wrote that book ["Cage Rat"] proclaiming himself as the guru of hitting.”

yankee / seattle games are maybe going to be get a little personal this year

especially if the mariners have the better team.

  64. Ys Guy February 18th, 2014 at 1:12 pm

i expect cano will run ‘em out to start this season but after a couple of road trips, he’ll fall back into his bad habit.

  65. tomingeorgia February 18th, 2014 at 1:16 pm

  67. chicken little February 18th, 2014 at 1:19 pm

my take on the Kevin Long/Cano/mcclendon thing:

    1. Long should not have talked about Cano, should have just issued a no-comment or given a generic no frills answer.
2.McClendon fell into the “have to get the last word” trap. there is no point in responding to long. he should have just issued a no comment or said, we are thrilled to have robbie as a part of the team and have no intent on responding to statements made by his former team. mcclendon should have then taken cano aside and told him, “we love you, but there is no point in having a back-and-forth with long about this. we have no concerns whatsoever about your hustle and desire to play.”
    3. hopefully someone takes long aside and tells him to keep his yap shut and let mcclendon’s response be the end of it. yankee fans know robbie didn’t hustle and seattle/other teams’ fans don’t give a crap. there is no point in a testosterone fueled fight over this stupidity.

Makes me wonder about the Yanks hitting instruction. If in the minors you are being taught to hit to all fields but in the majors you have coach that de-values contact in exchange for power how does all that all mesh?
    ___
Exactly. Long seems to preach the opposite of what we ask players to do in the minors. Very strange.

As for the Long Cano comments, read that a few days ago and chose not to comment then or now.

  70. Giuseppe Franco February 18th, 2014 at 1:30 pm

There is no way Brian Roberts is going to be healthy enough to play 152 games.

The Yanks should be thrilled if they get 100 games out of him.

  71. braeburn February 18th, 2014 at 1:31 pm

“2.McClendon fell into the “have to get the last word” trap. there is no point in responding to long”

    i disagree.

mcclendon is a new manager and his new team needs to know he has their back.

cano is the new foundation of that team and a new manager can’t let another team’s hitting instructor bash their new star player.

  72. yankeefeminista February 18th, 2014 at 1:32 pm

    “——————

Exactly he should be focused on the Yankee offense. He’s part of the reason why it has gone from a circular line-up to an all or nothing offense.”

Maybe the hitters they have just aren’t that good. There’s only so much a coach can get out of hitters.

I’m pretty sure Long had the okay from management to say what he said.

The company line has been that Cano is lazy for a while now. A lot of fans believe he’s lazy. Pretty soon Mariner fans will be saying Cano is lazy.

He’s not lazy he’s just smooth or he gets frustrated when he doesn’t hit the ball hard. (This is what his defenders like to say)

Truth be told he isn’t lazy, he’s just not going to expend the energy running hard to first base on a routine ground out. Some players will and some won’t.

However I keep hearing in my head some of the things that have been said about him outside the NYC bubble….I’ve asked quite a few guys about him and what their organization’s felt about Tanaka. Just about all the responses were quite the same, he’s going to be good but not that contract good……A # 3 guy…. Can’t wait until the Mariners have their 3rd 5 game losing streak by July and McClendon starts feeling the heat he’s going to wig out watching Cano dogging it down to 1st one too many times. Naturally Mac knows he’ll be the one to go and not the 250 million dollar man. And Cano knows this all so well…..

Exactly, I wish everyone would leave the Cano topic alone. It’s actually pretty tedious now.

You want something not tedious. Check out True Detective. When TV starts pulling out string theory, folks should take notice. I think about five years ago I was saying we may be in the Golden Age of Television. I’ll go further. We are in a Golden Age period. This is a new Renaissance. Maybe not for music, but I don’t know enough about that. But in terms of sheer creative expression, these are unique times. The massive volume of avenues for artists to get heard and express themselves is unprecedented. The fact that something like HBO can produce a one hour program that you can devote a college semester of physics, literature and philosophy in order to understand is astounding.

  110. Jerkface February 18th, 2014 at 2:07 pm

    Chad,

Thanks for the great video! Your ST coverage is pretty good so far as usual.

Brian Roberts has been equal parts injured and sucky the last 4 seasons. I doubt he bucks both of those this year at his ripe old age. Some guys just don’t have long, illustrious careers where they are able to play baseball well into their 30s. Roberts looks like one of those guys. I expect he is Tony Womack’d around May or June for Dean Anna or some other 2B option.

  111. Jerkface February 18th, 2014 at 2:10 pm

At least 5 organizations in baseball valued Tanaka at 20 million per year, so its not some huge overpay or surprise that the Yankees paid what they did. If he is a #3 thats fine, if he pitched like that over the entire length of the contract that would be a huge win. What free agent pitchers have pitched above average for an entire length of their deal? However #3 is his floor, not his ceiling, and I expect he will be very good.

Is Kuroda a #3? If he pitched like Kuroda has pitched the last 2 years would you be disappointed? If you got 4-7 (depending on opt out) years of a 3.30 ERA would you really complain about this deal?

Pitcher slot #s are irrelevant until we talk about the expected production that comes with it.

  112. Pat M. February 18th, 2014 at 2:11 pm

Braeburn….I think he’ll be good but I also believe that his impact wouldn’t be on the level of The Catfish or CC’s . Blake, other than being a devout Yankee fan, what makes you think he’ll be the best pitcher on the staff….Blind Optimism ????

  113. Jerkface February 18th, 2014 at 2:13 pm

Roberts is this years Vernon Wells. A guy that most of baseball knows is done, but the Yankees are trying to find some kind of spark in because they had no other (cheap) choice. Its not like Roberts was a consistently great 2B who had a down year last year. He is a guy who was kind of just alright, then had a nice stretch in his prime, then fell off the wagon with multiple injuries and lost baseball ability.

  114. bbb51 February 18th, 2014 at 2:14 pm

Long has the truth on his side though. Those who didn’t like what Long said don’t want to hear the truth. Somehow it has become bad form to speak the truth. McClendon is simply trying to protect Cano only because he is now his player. Doesn’t change the truth though, Cano is a dog on ground balls.

  115. Shame Spencer February 18th, 2014 at 2:15 pm

Is Kuroda a #3? If he pitched like Kuroda has pitched the last 2 years would you be disappointed? If you got 4-7 (depending on opt out) years of a 3.30 ERA would you really complain about this deal?

    ————

Fair point. I’m just not sure that’s really what the Yankees were hoping for when they brought him in, regardless of Cash’s statements. Personally I still think he’ll be better than that and that he’ll end up as the Ace of the staff. But if he does end up being a #3 type guy, it makes you wonder how they’ll maneuver from here on out with the rotation.

  116. blake February 18th, 2014 at 2:15 pm

” Blake, other than being a devout Yankee fan, what makes you think he’ll be the best pitcher on the staff….Blind Optimism ????”

Because he has a 70+ grade split and big league hitters currently struggle mightily with that pitch….. Because of his age….and because CC isn’t what he used to be. He doesn’t need to be clayton Kershaw to be the best pitcher on the staff. There may be some growing pains but if his fastball command And split are as good as the reports then I think he’s going to be very good…..

  117. Shame Spencer February 18th, 2014 at 2:17 pm

The Astros, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Cubs, and Yankees all offered 100+ million dollar contracts to Tanaka. The Yankees were the ones who signed him so of course their offer is higher than the others, thats generally what happens when you get the player. The Cubs weren’t willing to do an opt out, but were willing to do 7 years.

The Dodgers offered more than 100 million for 5-6 years and if you add in the 20 million posting fee its a minimum of 120+ for 5-6 years. So even your favorite ball club liked him at 20+ million.

You need to get over your Jerkface bias and start looking at the ballplayer, because Tanaka has the tools to succeed in the majors.

Blake your right – not a smart move on any level by Long. I wonder though if it was part of a “plan” by the Yankees to smudge Cano’s reputation. That’s basically what Francesca argued as he opened his show today – a purposeful smear job.

But why go there though. Why even rsh or expose it. I could understand this being a story the day he signs or a week after but is February.

It was probably the first time he was asked about it.

Lets hope not….that’s a very Red Sox maneuver

  138. RadioKev February 18th, 2014 at 2:38 pm

I don’t mind Long’s comments. They were real. I’m sure a reporter just asked what he thought about Cano, he spoke his mind, and that was it. He obviously has a relationship with Cano, and hardly trashed him.

  139. RadioKev February 18th, 2014 at 2:42 pm

What’s a smear job about saying it’s a shame Cano didn’t hustle down the line? Everyone here has complained about it at one point or another, despite it being largely inconsequential. Long is dead on. Why would he open himself up to criticism like that? He also mentioned that Cano was overall a very hard worker.

No controversy here… move along folks.

Many of the huge concrete pieces were used elsewhere after the War, but enough are left to get a sense of how the harbor looked. The museum also has a short movie and several models and diagrams of the construction of the harbor.
