This would be the perfect time for A-Rod to make his entrance

  2. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 11:37 am

    Go Jeet!

  3. blake February 19th, 2014 at 11:40 am

Jeter: this has nothing to do with how I feel physically

  4. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 11:41 am

blake, not surprised; of course he would say that.

  5. blake February 19th, 2014 at 11:43 am

Jeter just asked Wally if he read the leter…..hilarious.

  6. Chip February 19th, 2014 at 11:52 am

Alex Rodriguez and Nomar Garciaparra jump out from behind the curtain and smash Jeter over the head with a steel chair and then body slam him through the table…a stunned Michael Kay screams “Oh my God it’s Alex Rodriguez and Nomar Garciappara, what are they doing here???”

The two then rip off their shirts to show NWO shirts under them.

Some won’t get the reference but don’t be afraid to admit it if you do.

Since it’s Matthews it makes it better.

  9. UnKnown February 19th, 2014 at 11:53 am

So glad that Jeter embarrassed Wally. That clown…

Then Cano walks out off nowhere to chase off Nomar and Alex. All of a sudden he hits Jeter with a leg drop.

    “Is he the third member??”

  11. blake February 19th, 2014 at 11:59 am

Jeter: I want to have a family. Applications for the mom are now available. (JK on that second part)

  12. Ys Guy February 19th, 2014 at 12:00 pm

These questions about legacy and his place in history and such have to be excruciating to Derek. His answer has always been that’s for other people to decide, and no matter how the media asks the question, he’s going to give another variation on that answer.

I am loving the fact that Jeter’s hostility toward the press is pretty much unshielded at this point.

First video: The flip to Jorge at the plate. Giambi out. Moose fist pump.

  17. willwill February 19th, 2014 at 12:05 pm

WINNING…. That’s derek jeter for you, and why he is a yankee. Steinbrenner would be proud if he were still alive, Derek Jeter is the new york yankees

  18. Hassey February 19th, 2014 at 12:06 pm

All things considered, is he the greatest Yankee of all time?

  19. Melkmanisinhotlanta February 19th, 2014 at 12:07 pm

Jeet is a machine. Utilizes Vulcan principles of logic and emotion control. Definitely not an easy going guy lol.

    ————————————————-
    no

  22. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Thing is that Jeet truly believes all this–winning, being a Yankee is what matters most–unlike most guys who are full of BS when they say this stuff. That too is what makes Jeet great.

  23. Hassey February 19th, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Who then? (I didn’t mean just stats)

  24. Triple Short of a Cycle February 19th, 2014 at 12:09 pm

He was actually slightly more human today. Only like 30 percent cyborg :)

  25. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Can someone give Olympic hockey updates?

  26. Ys Guy February 19th, 2014 at 12:11 pm

babe ruth was the greatest baseball player of all time, so that would make him the greatest yankee even though he never threw a pitch for them.

lou gehrig comes in second then dimaggio and mantle in either order.

id give the edge to yogi by way of # of championships, but derek is right there with him, imo.

  27. TheStraw February 19th, 2014 at 12:12 pm

    Hassey-

Yes. By a nose hair over Mo.

  28. Triple Short of a Cycle February 19th, 2014 at 12:14 pm

id give the edge to yogi by way of # of championships, but derek is right there with him, imo.

    ————————————–

Championships should not factor into it much. It was much easier for the Yankees to win back then

  29. Melkmanisinhotlanta February 19th, 2014 at 12:14 pm

Jeet must have undergone a Vulcan mind meld at a very young age. Geez, sometimes learning about baseball demigod is very deflating. Talk about a stiff suit.

  30. Hassey February 19th, 2014 at 12:14 pm

DiMaggio became so surly over time that I actually give Jeter the edge there
Mantle, love the guy, but the lack of care for himself impacted his career and the team (though the Mantle Yanks won a million rings anyway)
Ruth, Gehrig, Yogi – I guess they are right their with Jete in the vain in which I asked the question.

but then again, what do I know. Ask Hankinflorida or Marty Appel or some other vintage Yankee historian.

  31. pat February 19th, 2014 at 12:15 pm

did derek piss in calcaterra’s wheaties or something?

    No. Just reporting what happened.

    JimmyTraina
Now that he knows he’s leaving, Derek Jeter not even bothering to hide his complete disdain for the media. Gonna be a fun season.

  32. Ys Guy February 19th, 2014 at 12:16 pm

so you guys are talking about the greatest yankee in your lifetime or maybe in the last 20 years.

you cant put jeter (or mo) ahead of ruth gehrig dimaggio or mantle and be serious.

Babe Ruth is probably the greatest american athelete of all time, let alone baseball player let alone Yankee.

  33. Cashmoney February 19th, 2014 at 12:18 pm

In a perfect world, Jurickson Profar would be my next Yankee SS. Just a whole package, probably has higher ceiling than Jeet even.

  34. Melkmanisinhotlanta February 19th, 2014 at 12:18 pm

Jeter wouldn’t say that he wants to retire before his performance declines. Not one of the reporters asked him if that was a motivating factor.

  35. UnKnown February 19th, 2014 at 12:20 pm

I love it. Jeter is just the BEST!!

  36. Ys Guy February 19th, 2014 at 12:21 pm

i like alot about jeter’s attitude and of course the intagibles, the leadership, etc.

but i like tangibles, too and that’s where jeter takes a back seat (maybe the way-back seat) to Ruth and Gehrig.

Also, while Ruth didnt have Jeter’s tenacity and drive, he was alot more fun than derek ever tried to be.

I love Derek, but I’m not going to elevate him way past where he belongs just because he announced his retirement.

Babe Ruth IS the Yankees to this day, Larger than life, Better than everybody with just enough mustard on top.

    and i LOVE Derek Jeter!

  37. UnKnown February 19th, 2014 at 12:25 pm

USA skating fast and furious looking very confident and always on the attack. Score is 1-1. USA hit a few posts.

  38. Melkmanisinhotlanta February 19th, 2014 at 12:25 pm

Jeet is a tough love kind of guy (based on watching this CC). I’m suprised he didn’t stomp on Cano’s lack of hussle and tell him to man up? Maybe Jeet did and the NYY got the most out of him. I suspect more fielding errors and lack of hussle this season in Seattle. It’s going to be ugly.

  39. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 12:25 pm

Thanks, Unknown. I’ll turn back to it after the Jeter highlights.

  40. UnKnown February 19th, 2014 at 12:26 pm

Which media member is going to be the first one to throw Jeter under the bus and say how he has such an ugly attitude on his way out? I’d take Wally at 2/1

  41. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 12:27 pm

Waste of air time. Who cares what Meredith thinks about what Jeter said?

  42. Chip February 19th, 2014 at 12:27 pm

I’ll never get how Alex could have been teammates with Derek for 8 years and still be bad at handling the media.

  43. UnKnown February 19th, 2014 at 12:27 pm

You could see that coming from a mile away. USA SCOOOOOOOOREEEEEEEES. Brown puts the biscuit in the basket.

I consider any time Meredith is on the air a waste of time – her voice actually annoys me more than Waldman’s.

  47. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 12:30 pm

Thanks again, Unknown. I saw the replay. I love river hockey, but the US needs to tighten up on D without sitting on the lead.

  48. blake February 19th, 2014 at 12:30 pm

Babe, Gehrig, Mantle, Jeter is the Mount Rushmore of Yankee history. You could argue Dimaggio over Gehrig I guess but that’s mine anyway.

  49. Chip February 19th, 2014 at 12:31 pm

I’m calling it now, a Sunday afternoon game in 2015 the Core Four will have their day.

  50. Cashmoney February 19th, 2014 at 12:31 pm

I wish there is more videos on Cuban Aledmys diaz to formulate an solid opinion, but from the little I have seen I think he is probably a notch below Alex Guerrero offensively and both are likely to be 2b in the long term.

Who is on your Yankee Mt Rushmore?

  54. tomingeorgia February 19th, 2014 at 12:34 pm

    Ys,
Saw DiMaggio in his last year as a little kid, read about him and all the earlier greats. Watched Mantle (when I could) through his whole career. The argument about who was the best ever doesn’t grab me. There is a pantheon of Yankees greats, and Jeter is one of them, and will forever be regarded as such. Who cares what the rank is?

  55. pat February 19th, 2014 at 12:34 pm

    @DPLennon
Hal Steinbrenner said he let Jeter’s initial call go to voice mail because he didn’t recognize the number. #Yankees

  56. Ys Guy February 19th, 2014 at 12:34 pm

This is my 50th year of being a Yankees fan!

  59. tbone1570 February 19th, 2014 at 12:38 pm

    Thanks Blake,

I seen your post with the list before I asked the question. I want to put him on the lsit but struggle who would get bumped off.

  60. UnKnown February 19th, 2014 at 12:38 pm

Backes in the house 3-1 USA. Route is on.

  61. blake February 19th, 2014 at 12:39 pm

Jeter defined an entire era for the Yankees….the way Mantle and the Babe did. You can argue Dimaggio did as well. For me….Jeter is on there…..I could see having Dimaggio instead of Gehrig though because Gehrig was during the Babe era. Mount Rushmore is about symbolism…..I don’t know that the 4 guys on there are the best presidents….(I think only Lincoln would be a certainty for a top 5 presidents list) but they are 4 of the most symbolic of the history of the country.

To me…..the best 4 players in Yankee history and the Mount Rushmore of Yankee history are different discussions.

  62. blake February 19th, 2014 at 12:40 pm

Hal doesn’t get reception in his money bin…..so it went straight to voice mail

  63. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 12:42 pm

jmills, how are you surviving? I didn’t realize Ted Nolan was coaching Latvia. Is he trapping the crap out of Canada?

Just add another two faces to Mt. Rushmore and add Dimaggio and Yogi. Simple.

  64. Melkmanisinhotlanta February 19th, 2014 at 12:42 pm

My nomination for Captain of the NYY in 2015 is AROD. Nature abhors a vacuum.

  65. Ys Guy February 19th, 2014 at 12:44 pm

It always surprises me looking at the Babe’s pictures of the various Yankees uni’s he wore. There were pinstriped white and blue hats, shirts with nothing on the front, shirts with YANKEES across the front along with the current configuration.

I like the pinstriped hats actually.

  66. Cashmoney February 19th, 2014 at 12:44 pm

Captainship is a pretty retarded and hollow idea, let’s just face the facts.

  67. blake February 19th, 2014 at 12:44 pm

@pgammo: Brian Roberts:”I guess it’s pretty cool to be the only person who played with Cal Ripken and Derek Jeter in their final seasons”

  68. yankeefeminista February 19th, 2014 at 12:45 pm

Cashmoney, from the little I’ve seen, Diaz looks like a 2B to me.

  69. Hassey February 19th, 2014 at 12:45 pm

The Yankees have had too many era-defining players to fit just four on a Mt Rushmore.

We’d instead need a Yankees chess set…Mattingly and Munson to be on it.

  70. Hassey February 19th, 2014 at 12:46 pm

Good one from Brian Roberts. Now if he can only hit .275 with 20 doubles, 20 steals and 12 poked HRs

  71. tomingeorgia February 19th, 2014 at 12:48 pm

Let me try to list the best Yankee players I ever saw, by position:

    P: Whitey Ford
    C: Yogi Berra
    1B:Moose Skowron
    2b: Robinson Cano
    ss: Derek Jeeter
    3rd:Greg Nettles
    LF:
    CF: Mickey Mantle
    RF:
    RP: Duh!
    Fill in the blanks, please.

  72. Cashmoney February 19th, 2014 at 12:48 pm

YF, Diaz looks like he has a longer swing as comparing to Guerrero’s , both have shown (in the little I have watched) impressive bat speed. Diaz might develop into a better homerun/power guy than he has shown in Cuba. I like the idea of adding in an area of weakness, but it will come down to money and how the Yanks evaluate him as usual.

  73. blake February 19th, 2014 at 12:51 pm

    Tom,
No Arod at 3B? PEDs aside he was pretty good

  76. Cashmoney February 19th, 2014 at 12:54 pm

YF, Guerrero’s footwork isn’t great nor is his arm from what I seen, the few plays I see from Diaz make me think he can probably stick at SS (maybe a Nixey type).

Bailey is just the latest example of team tying up premium talents that would have reached FA at a reasonable age for a long term deal, cuz that’s what stars will command.

Yanks needs to develop some their owns or game over for constructing a dynasty.

  85. Hassey February 19th, 2014 at 1:05 pm

Didn’t watch his press conference – Derek’s never been that compelling with this kind of stuff. Still pretty shocked he announced his retirement before the season still – just didn’t seem like his style.

  92. Hassey February 19th, 2014 at 1:15 pm

I wonder if labeling himself “retired” will be enough stickershock for the 24 year olds chirpies to shy away. His new age limit is a strict 27

  93. tomingeorgia February 19th, 2014 at 1:16 pm

    Sorry, Hassey!

  94. Hassey February 19th, 2014 at 1:17 pm
