Full-squad workout begins at 11

WarrenAdam Warren and Vidal Nuno have already thrown batting practice today, and Michael Pineda has an early bullpen, but otherwise things are going to be later than usual today.

Stretch isn’t until 11 am, and it looks like full batting practice won’t start until 12:05. If I still remember how to read these spring training workout sheets, it looks like Derek Jeter will be in the first hitting group facing Preston Claiborne (but these things are always subject to change).

Jeter is predictably taking ground balls in the same group with his new double play partner Brian Roberts.

    One step closer to baseball!

I watched The Armstrong Lie last night… utterly fascinating documentary.

I felt like I was watching a LoHud debate to some degree. The parallels to Alex are pretty incredible from Armstrong’s upbringing, to the complacency of the sport’s governing bodies, to the media’s buy in of the lies.. incredible.

I also thought it was pretty interesting that Lance’s doctor seemed to have very little interest in the sport itself. It really seems like the guy was/is just a scientist that wants to find and push through the limits of the human body. I was kind of iffy about watching it at all but I’d highly recommend it, even to anyone dubious about how entertained they’d be by the film. Well worth the time.

First game a week from today. Good to get back to real baseball!

An exciting finish for the women’s hockey bronze medal… can’t wait to see US and Canada battle it out. The first game they played was brutal.

  5. Ys Guy February 20th, 2014 at 9:29 am

heavy absenteeism on the morning shift today

  6. Shame Spencer February 20th, 2014 at 9:29 am

Hard to believe baseball is so close.. I’m still surrounded by mountains of snow. Can’t wait to see some in-game action. I know ST is one of those things where guys come out looking incredible and end up being pretty so-so but it’s a lot of fun to believe.

  7. Shame Spencer February 20th, 2014 at 9:32 am

I wanted to post this for Jerkface (since now I’m reading up on the director and his process for filming The Armstrong Lie):

Ferrari at least sounds like he knew a lot about the science of the body and how to optimize performance besides just doping.

I think people like [Sunday Times writer David Walsh, who crusaded to expose Armstrong] are unfair to him. It’s not like he didn’t prescribe, oversee and administer drugs — he did. But I think that he had a much more complete program. He was a super smart guy, but he was deeply cynical about the process. To him, it was just a game. You know, they come up with these arbitrary rules, whatever. Now we’re going to just prove how fast the human machine can go.

Sadly, real baseball starts in six weeks. #springtrainingistoolong

Ys – I’m here! I can’t claim to take up the entirety of the LoHud Mount Rushmore if I’m not committed.

  10. Shame Spencer February 20th, 2014 at 9:33 am

AAA – I saw someone on Twitter refer to ST as a 6 week dry hump lol. Pretty accurate (and hysterical) analogy.

@RiverAveBlues: Either now or later, Yankees are going to have to pay for infield help http://t.co/jSspksQpig

  12. blake February 20th, 2014 at 9:37 am

“Anyway, Sherman goes on to say Scott Boras’ current asking price for Drew is a two-year contract with an opt-out after the first year. So it’s basically a one-year contract unless he has a really bad year, in which case you’re stuck with him for 2015 as well. The Yankees have already forfeited three top draft picks, so signing Drew would only cost money and a second round pick, which might turn into a supplemental first rounder if he opts out and rejects a qualifying offer next winter.
The Yankees do not want to pay that money and surrender the pick for Drew right now, but in all likelihood they’re going to have to pay for infield help at some point this year. If they don’t give up money and a pick for Drew now, they’ll have to surrender prospects (and probably take on salary) to trade for someone at midseason. Roberts is a huge health risk and the chances of Johnson getting exposed as an everyday player are high enough that an in-season trade feels like an inevitability. Heck, they might have to make a trade even if they sign Drew.”

    From the link above…..baffling

  13. Shame Spencer February 20th, 2014 at 9:49 am

Two year (or possibly one) for Drew and still no takers…? I still think he ends up with the Mets.

  14. MTU February 20th, 2014 at 9:50 am

    Blake-

It’s real simple from the Yankees perspective.

They want to see what they have first before they make any other moves.

But the article is dead on in that if Johnson or Roberts go down they’ll be paying even more later on.

    It’s a calculated gamble.

  15. Cashmoney February 20th, 2014 at 10:01 am

There is something admirable about those who stood firm in the face of overwhelming odds. Luis, good luck!

    ————–

They don’t even know if they’ll have better options though.. I hope they know something we don’t, but I was hoping the same last year and they weren’t able to upgrade the team at the deadline.

If they’re waiting until next off season, they’ll definitely be overpaying for FAs… but I’m not sure that the best available will even hit the market (Hanley).

  17. Tackelberry February 20th, 2014 at 10:05 am

Wonder if they make an offer for Diaz.

Yankees have two players in @BaseballAmerica Top 100 prospects: No. 4 Masahiro Tanaka and No. 35 Gary Sanchez http://www.baseballamerica.com.....ects-free/

    Delta_Whiskey ?@Don_556MM
@FeinsandNYDN that’s not good. We need to draft some good young talent. Can we steal Tampa bay’s scouts?

    Mark Feinsand ?@FeinsandNYDN
Rays have one player (No. 67, Odorizzi) on that list. @Don_556MM We need to draft some good young talent. Can we steal Tampa bay’s scouts?

    Will Carroll ?@injuryexpert
    @feinsandnydn @don_556mm And they didn’t draft him.

  19. MTU February 20th, 2014 at 10:08 am

    Shame-

“They don’t even know if they’ll have better options though.. ”

That is why it’s a gamble.

Because they don’t know. They are assuming that they will be able to find what they need.

They are also gambling on the health of several players as well.

    ;)

  20. MTU February 20th, 2014 at 10:09 am

    Why wouldn’t they ?

    ;)

  21. blake February 20th, 2014 at 10:09 am

They want to see what they have first before they make any other moves.”

I can tell them…..the thing is ….even if they can find a better SS….who are they gonna find better than Drew to play 2B on a 2 year deal?

  22. Cashmoney February 20th, 2014 at 10:10 am

Tackel, I was thinking of the same thing. regardless of talent level because we simply do not know. I have yet to witness the Yanks splashed in IFA other than Tanaka whilst the L.A. Dodgers have already handed out 25 mil contracts to 2 cuban hopeful.

  23. MTU February 20th, 2014 at 10:11 am

    Blake-

They might go for the Cuban for 2b.

    ;)

  24. MTU February 20th, 2014 at 10:12 am

    Blake-

And maybe they believe Anna or Sizemore will be options for 2b.

  25. Cashmoney February 20th, 2014 at 10:13 am

who are they gonna find better than Drew to play 2B on a 2 year deal?

    surely, you can’t be serious?

  26. Shame Spencer February 20th, 2014 at 10:14 am

It seems like a high risk low reward gamble, as it stands.

  27. DONNYBROOK February 20th, 2014 at 10:15 am

The revealing part of the 2 day old Sherman piece was that early this offseason, the Yanks Did make Drew a 2 or 3 year offer.

  28. blake February 20th, 2014 at 10:16 am

Tampa really hasn’t drafted that well lately…..their bubble might burst soon unless they can get a major haul for price to reload

  29. blake February 20th, 2014 at 10:17 am

“who are they gonna find better than Drew to play 2B on a 2 year deal?

Name some people then….they have to be better than Drew and cheaper

  30. MTU February 20th, 2014 at 10:17 am

    Shame-

Apparently the Yankees do not think so or they wouldn’t be trying it.

  31. Shame Spencer February 20th, 2014 at 10:18 am

Does anyone wanna guess how much Hanley will earn..? If he does end up with the Yankees it’s going to be on a huge deal.

  33. MTU February 20th, 2014 at 10:20 am

    Blake-

The Rays have gotten Archer and Odorizzi via trades.

They will need to get a haul for Price as well.

    You’re correct.

    Great scouting though.

If he repeats his 2013 you’re looking at 150 minimum Id say

  35. Tackelberry February 20th, 2014 at 10:20 am

Don’t see the Dodgers letting Hanley get away. I see the Yanks much more likely to get Asrubal Cabrera or JJ Hardy

  36. MTU February 20th, 2014 at 10:21 am

    A new one ——->

  37. blake February 20th, 2014 at 10:21 am

    MTU,
Yea that’s the thing….they have been stocking up via trade lately instead of the draft. Myers, Archer etc and they have a pretty good core locked up for several years in Longo, Moore, Myers, Archer ……but it’s gonna be harder for them to keep the cycle going drafting lower IMO……

  38. dan l February 20th, 2014 at 10:21 am

Blake you’re pathetic with all this Drew or bust garbage…the Yankees have lots of unproven options so why not look into them? Be a bit optimistic? According to BR Brendon Ryan has had the better WAR per season…however Fangraphs gives the War edge to Drew. Drew does not hit on the road and does not hit lefties so why this LOVE for a flawed player?

  39. Cashmoney February 20th, 2014 at 10:23 am

they have to be better than Drew and cheaper
    ——
blake, these criteria you put up are so arbitrary. what if you can acquire someone younger and cheaper , someone who is more expensive but better, maybe someone who even marginally worse but a lot cheaper. What I am saying to you is that Drew is the only and most ideal options at 2b in the next 2 years.

  40. Cashmoney February 20th, 2014 at 10:24 am

    *not the only.
