Video: Manny Banuelos throws live batting practice

Manny Banuelos faced hitters for the second time this spring. He was supposed to face a group of high profile big leaguers — Carlos Beltran, Jacoby Ellsbury, Ichiro Suzuki, plus Gary Sanchez — but most of the veteran guys hit inside today because of the weather. Instead, Banuelos pitched to Dean Anna, Russ Canzler and Scott Sizemore.

“Looked pretty good,” Joe Girardi said. “Obviously missing a year you’re going to be a little bit rusty. But it looked like the ball was coming out of his hand great. I like what I see.”

There’s some video above from the Banuelos BP. As you’ll be able to tell, I kept trying to find a decent angle, but it wasn’t a great setup for filming on an iPhone.

Be nice to plug Banuelos into that 5 slot next year.

Picking up the discussion from the last thread…..

Doctors, trainers, and therapists may be specialists in health and the medical field but they are also human and can be wrong or occasionally make mistakes just like anyone else.

Just like the Yankee front office can and do make mistakes more often than we’d like even though they may have far more information to make decisions than idiots like us on a blog.

Gee, I mean, who knew the Vernon Wells trade, the Hafner signing, re-signing Ichiro to a 2 yr deal, signing and injury plagued Youkilis, or handing the catching reigns over to Stewie would all turn out to be disastrous decisions by Cashman and Co.?

Well….pretty much everybody but the Yankee front office.

Is this the theatre of the absurd or what?

Here is a guy with chronic wrist pain. He went on DL last summer for it. He dropped out of the AFL in the fall for it. Here it is, spring training, February, and his at bats are being “closely monitored” because he is afraid of “overdoing it.””
    ==========================

This is probably more common than you would think. Teams like to avoid surgery for as long as they can hoping the problem resolves first since not all surgeries get you back to 100%. Happened with the Red Sox with Carl Crawford who played most of 2011 with a bad wrist and did not have surgery till January. Then his elbow started bothering him in March and they delayed TJ Surgery until August.

I guess teams want to avoid unnecessary surgery. I suppose they must have some success stories. I remember when Beckett was with the Marlins the Docs there wanted to do labrum surgery. He never had the surgery and 10 years later never has (although he just thoracic outlet surgery) . These things are not an exact science.

If I am a player I would never rely only on the team docs since they work for the team. Best get a 2nd opinion.

I guess, but it can go both ways, the deal for Shawn Kelley was nice, Soriano was a good pickup, Overbay actually provided some nice moments, who knows what a full season of Cervelli there as catcher brings you, as with all seasons and teams, there are good deals, and bad deals, que sera sera

fangraphs did their worst 2014 offseason transactions:

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs.....ff-season/

Yanks had two (Beltran and Tanaka)

Cano was no. 2, but not for the reasons you might think

  8. Giuseppe Franco February 22nd, 2014 at 6:45 pm

The Soriano deal came too little too late. They should have been selling their assets when they got him.

And Cervelli is not a starting catcher for a championship contender. At this point, he barely qualifies as a decent backup catcher.

  9. pete2 February 22nd, 2014 at 6:47 pm

If the Yankees knew Cruz could have been available for 8 million would they still have signed Beltran for 3/45? They could then have signed a certain someone who shall not be named for the IF, or at least a BP arm.

  10. Revenge of Stoneburner February 22nd, 2014 at 6:48 pm

    *****

Kuroda stinking up the joint in August forward and then Sabathia – so I am fine with Soriano when he came – and I think Cervelli qualifies as a decent backup. Add to other transactions like bringing back Kuroda and Pettitte – again some deals work, some don’t – sometimes you hit on Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon – sometimes you don’t

  11. pete2 February 22nd, 2014 at 6:54 pm

“Giuseppe Franco February 22nd, 2014 at 6:45 pm

The Soriano deal came too little too late. They should have been selling their assets when they got him.”

The Yankees had a real shot to get to the playoffs after he joined. The offense with Soriano and Arod was fixed. Unfortunately, the SP and BP collapsed due to the workload and stress of the first 4 months with no offense, and the injury to Gardner was the last straw.

In hindsight of course, they never make the deal with Soriano and sign Cruz and Morales instead of Beltran, and they trade Cano and maybe Granderson for whatever they could have got.

That’s Dino Anna, Chad. :). Actually like Dino better than Dean. Hopefully both pan out.

  13. tomingeorgia February 22nd, 2014 at 6:57 pm

Even if I’m all alone, I’m optimistic for this season. It’ll be fun, whatever happens, and I’m leaning toward an AL championship, and a good run in the WS.

Tom you are not alone. Most are optimistic. The naysayers will always be here. Whether lamenting Montero’s generational bat or Yankees FO stupidity for other decisions none of us have a clue about, it is okay to be optimistic. This is a good team that will be fun to watch.

Kelly Johnson is going to be the big surprise of the 2014 NY Yankee season….

  16. MTU February 22nd, 2014 at 7:13 pm

It’s amazing how many people are predicting a good season from Johnson.

  17. tomingeorgia February 22nd, 2014 at 7:22 pm

    Mister MTU,
I’m predicting good things from everybody. We’re going to win this thing.

  18. luis February 22nd, 2014 at 7:26 pm

    Good evening guys,

Thanks for all the kind thoughts… I think this team is at 88 wins right now, which means it might win 93 or 83…It has a much better rotation, the BP will sort itself out and the offense is better…But we have a huge question mark on the IF and the ability to stay healthy…So if all goes extremely well we make it to the PS.

  19. blake February 22nd, 2014 at 7:27 pm

    Mr Tom,
Made some Huli Huli chicken today by the following recipe …..it was pretty dang good if you want something a little different

  20. pete2 February 22nd, 2014 at 7:28 pm

I like Johnson but he is stretched too thin. He is the regular 3Bman and backup at 2B and 1B. His best position is 2B, and if he who should not be named was at 3B, this would have the makings of a decent IF.

  21. MTU February 22nd, 2014 at 7:29 pm

    Buenos noches Luis.

    Cuidado amigo.

    How are things ?

Are you going to leave soon ?

  22. MTU February 22nd, 2014 at 7:30 pm

What is the basis for expecting such big things from Johnson ?

    He’s only had 16 games at 3b.

  23. luis February 22nd, 2014 at 7:36 pm

    Hola MTU,

    ——–

You are probably right pete2. I have no idea regarding the total universe of injuries out there. But I think a lot of it depends on the body part. When it comes to a sore wrist and a hitter, it seems that if he’s been on the DL more than once for the same injury he almost always ends up with surgery. The only one I can remember who didn’t go for the surgery and came back strong was Ortiz.

With pitchers I think it’s completely different. Especially the shoulder. I bet there are tons of pitchers who have pitched an entire career in pain but if you had MRI’d them someone would say they needed surgery. I remember Andy Pettitte in his first go round with the Yanks. It always seemed like he would one day have TJS. I think he eventually had elbow surgery with the Astros but it wasn’t TMJ. I bet he pitched with significant pain his entire career.

With Austin though, I think the odds are super high he has surgery this year. Maybe next month.

    Hey Mac!

Thanks…I know, I have contact with other posters that have told me about the concerns of many fellow posters including you.

    MTU,

I’ll share a little information of my family history…I can trace back my ancestry back to the battle of Hastings on one side of the family and from the battle of Lepanto on the other… My great grandfather lead, fought and won the largest battle in Venezuelan history (Battle of La Victoria in 1902), even though he was outnumbered 3-1… He used to say that the army would back the Government always, until they didn’t…Which means that we really don’t know if the army will back Maduro, or if it will back him no matter what…What we need to do is force them to make a choice and go from there…We haven’t reached that point yet…We’ll see…Also, we are not afraid of being outgun and outnumbered… It is the quality, discipline and conviction of the troops that matter the most in the end

  35. MTU February 22nd, 2014 at 7:57 pm

    OK Luis.

    You win.

Just remember what I told you.

Chad, thanks for the vids on Manny B. and updates on Campos. How about vids of Dellin and JRam next? :) Interesting to see the reality of how far De Paula still has to go with his mechanics and secondary pitches vs. the original scouting reports that had him categorized as extremely polished with multiple advanced pitches pre coming stateside… Although I still think we get him in second half in AA. And as for BA’s position rankings. I don’t put much stock in those, and as far as SS goes, I think we will have some players including Avelino on the radar at the end of 2014. And FTR, I too have been concerned about Austin’s wrist for a couple of years now…

pat, I’d bet Alex would be similarly brilliant as a (hitting) instructor.

Hi, Luis. Good to see you in these parts! :)

  71. luis February 22nd, 2014 at 8:52 pm

    Tom,

That’s the 64 thousand dollar question… Ok here I go… IMO, they can’t compromise…For several reasons, but the main one is that they won’t be able to enjoy their money..Their only potential exile countries are Cuba, North Corea, Siria, Iran or China… I don’t think they want to go there, they want to go to the US and Europe and the only way to do that is to remain in power, otherwise they will end up in jail, even if they negotiate with the local resistance forces… So any attempt of a compromise should be looked at with a lot of suspicion IMO… They will try to gain time like they have done in the past… IMO we need to force the Army to make a stand…If they choose to remain loyal to the regime, they will repress all the opposition but then all the masks would be gone, which would enable an exile government and possibly the organization of an army in order to defeat them militarily… But if they choose to side with the resistance there will be bloodshed but not as much… We need to keep with the protests in order to corner them in to action and see what happens…The problem is that there are certain factions within the opposition that want to call off the protests and sit in a negotiating table with the regime…That could mean the end for us…Just my opinion of course.

Luis I trust you and your family stay safe along with all people in Venezuela. I was fortunate to spend a great deal of time in your beautiful country including two wonderful weeks on Isle de Margarita with my fiancé years ago. I felt perfectly safe there and the people in the small fishing village of San Francisco were as kind as could be.

Caracas was a different story and crime was always a problem. This was back in the days of President Caldera in 1998 and crime was so bad the police told everyone not to stop their cars at red lights as thugs would jump out of the shadows and shoot people in the head to take their car. We were staying in the Eurobuilding a luxury hotel but one night when we were at dinner someone entered our room and stole $10K of camera equipment we had under the bed.

Also, the economy was so bad that Caldera if I remember correctly had people’s credit cards destroyed or cancelled so they couldn’t fly to Miami to shop. No matter who the government is, the Venezuelan people have suffered, especially the poor. With the oil wealth, it should not be.

    Stay safe.

I did…looks like a pretty nice place…mid 60′s sounds pretty nice right now…even I have snow coming down at the moment.

    Howler-

It is. Kind of an amazing place actually.

The picture is an old one and does not really do it justice.

I just wanted to clarify what I meant by a “beach” here in the desert.

    :)

    YF-

My 2 favorites are carrot cake and German chocolate.

I’m also a sucker for a good homemade pie.

    luis,
Mise en scene. Hang in there. As always in Venezuela, the Army is the key. You can bet on the fact that the US is in contact with their friends. Of course, the rulers don’t want to give up. What do they have to gain, other than their lives. At some point, the generals will turn, at least that’s my hope. They’re all American trained, back in the day.

I’ve been taking pictures for a monthly challenge for a new camera club I joined…but I’ve got to mind my P’s and Q’s with these people…seems most of them are Police, ex-police, Firemen, S&R or Sheriffs. I’ll get pulled over one day and get a ticket because I bad mouthed someone’s picture at a meeting ;)

    luis primo!

    You’re a sight for sore eyes :)

I just read your post. I had questions for you along those lines, which I sent to you, but you have answered them here.

To all: I heard from jmv yesterday and he’s physically safe, a distance from the “riots” “at least, for now,” and describes these as “rough days.” He said there is “no quit in the spirits” of the student protestors, said he has access to social media, and appreciates the prayers from his fellow Lohud commenters. I told him that we continue our vigil for him, luis, and for all of Venezuela, and have asked that he keep us in the loop.

Shame Spencer – saw your link on the Cargo and other Venezuelan players, thanks for posting. Ditto, pat.

Thanks, MTU. I got a glimpse from the miniature version. ;)

MTU, those all sound good. That site I linked to is a bakery/cafe in Providence that I used to frequent when I went to grad school in RI. They had fabulous chocolate mousse and key lime cakes among others. Yum.

    Howler-

    Join a different club.

Maybe one composed of oddballs and other assorted kooks.

    ;)

  86. Howler February 22nd, 2014 at 9:12 pm

    They’d make me president :)
Those other people are quite nice, and I’m used to hanging about with Police and Firefighters, half my neighborhood and most of my friend’s fathers were one or the other, and about half my friends followed in their footsteps.

I read Montero quotes earlier today. Like the rest, worried about his family back home. Any quotes from Cervelli or Ramon Flores? Those are the two I can think of for us who are at ST.

    My pleasure, as always, YF.

Pruf, yeah I read that mlb story on the Venezuelan players including Montero. They all feel so helpless having family there in Venezuela and being so far away from home.

  92. Howler February 22nd, 2014 at 9:16 pm

They’re the type that either are, or need Lawyers, Guns and Money ;)

And here I was thinking you were a fellow Piscean, MTU and was drinking Garces Padre Hijo french pressed cafe and sesame cookies in your honor…

    —-

Well, if you’re looking for a fellow Piscean you’ve found one.

I don’t get sentimental regarding birthdays but this year is kind of a big one. I’ll turn 40 on 3/05.

I’ll probably “celebrate” with some Chicago deep dish pizza.

In MTU’s honor I bought peanut butter blast cake!

I hope I did you a service as opposed to a disservice!

    :)
