Rivera stunned by Jeter’s retirement decision

I was standing in the Yankees clubhouse this afternoon when Mariano Rivera held a conference call to promote the upcoming two-game exhibition series in Panama. Thankfully, The Associated Press was on the call. Here’s their story.

Mariano Rivera, Derek JeterNEW YORK (AP) — Mariano Rivera never figured this would be Derek Jeter’s final season.

“I didn’t see this coming at all. I didn’t see it,” the retired New York Yankees reliever said Wednesday. “For sure I was one of the guys that said they would have to pull his uniform off his body to take him out. But I was wrong, and this was a surprise to me.”

Rivera announced last March that 2013 would be his final season and was honored in every city the Yankees stopped in. Rivera, who turned 44 in November, had a record 652 saves in 19 seasons and 42 more in the postseason.

Jeter said this month that 2014 is his final year playing baseball. Rivera predicted Jeter’s farewell tour will be much like his own.

“It will be better,” Rivera said. “He deserves it. He has given everything for the game of baseball, and when you have a player like that, he deserves that and more.”

Rivera spoke Wednesday during a telephone conference call to promote a two-game exhibition series between the Yankees and Miami Marlins at Panama City on March 15-16. Rivera said he won’t pitch in the games, which are being played to benefit the Mariano Rivera Foundation. Proceeds from a gala dinner will go to Children’s Hospital in Panama City.

“I’m a little bit down because I would have loved to participate and compete while I was playing,” Rivera said. “I would have loved my people to see me play down there in Panama. But at the same time, I’m happy that the team is going there. Hopefully this will be the opening of doors so Panama can host some baseball, real baseball games during the season down in Panama.”

Rivera has been spending time working with his church and community groups.

“I’m doing exactly what I love to do,” he said. “Definitely I miss it. I’m not going to lie to you. I do miss baseball. But I need my family, too. I’m fine.”

If I were visiting Panama I would like to see Mo’s little fishing village, The Darien, and the Panama canal.

I’ve had one eye on the blog and one eye on the tv (BBC) the last couple of hours… I’ve been watching a re-run of Top Gear UK trip to Africa… man, I love that show!

You need to get your priorities straight.

    Nothing tops the Blog.

    Except for “Vikings”.

I haven’t watched Vikings yet (I love the song “Glory and Gore” on the commercials)… So its worth a watch?

I have a new Prediction Chart. This one is just for giggles because there are only three possible answers (really only two realistic, I would say.) This is the WHERE WILL GARDNER HIT WHEN IT ALL SIFTS OUT? PREDICTION CHART. Top of the lineup (1-3); middle of the lineup (4-6); bottom of the lineup (7-9)

Mike – I’ll check it out

  9. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 26th, 2014 at 8:27 pm

Because I know Ellsbury will DEFINITELY be in the one hole, as he should be!

  10. chicken_stanley February 26th, 2014 at 8:34 pm

Trisha – it almost certainly won’t happen but I was thinking yesterday; how about a lineup with GGBG 1st, Jeter 2nd, and Ellsbury 3rd? Not a traditional top of the lineup but intriguing. I have virtually no hope of being right but put me down for top of the lineup

Kevin Towers on his abundance of shortstops. Could Gregorius for Murphy happen?

The battle between Chris Owings and Didi Gregorius is officially underway with Cactus League play starting on Wednesday. Owings still feels like the favorite and it still sounds like the losing party is more likely to end up in Triple-A Reno than on the big league bench.

But we should also keep in mind a third outcome – that the Diamondbacks end the competition by making a trade at some point during spring training.

“It’s been pretty quiet of late,” General Manager Kevin Towers said of the trade market. “With Stephen Drew still out there right now, I haven’t had much trade discussions.”

But Towers didn’t shoot down the idea of a trade. In fact, he spelled out what the Diamondbacks probably would be looking for in return if they were going to trade one of their shortstops.

“For us, it would have to be the right deal,” Towers said. “Our biggest needs in our system are catching. If it’s the right, top-notch catching prospect. Someone we could have right behind Miggy. More of an upper-level guy.

The reason I must veto this, chicken, is that Ellsbury is a natural for the top of the lineup. And he is wildly successful at stealing bases. So I’d rather have him at the tippity top, where any power at all will get him in.

However, since the Yanks don’t necessarily check with me before they do anything, I suppose there’s a chance that yours can come through.

    We have what Towers needs.

  14. chicken_stanley February 26th, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Trisha – agreed. Like I said, not a traditional top of the lineup but intriguing nonetheless.

  15. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 26th, 2014 at 8:52 pm

chicken – we are going to adore having Ellsbury at the top. Having enviously watched him perform miracles too many times for the Sux, I am beyond elated that he’s ours! This guy is not afraid to steal bases. On top of it, he seldom fails. To me, your prototypical lead off player.

  16. chicken_stanley February 26th, 2014 at 8:57 pm

Trisha – not arguing cause I would be doing so from a position of weakness :)

Upstate – If you’re out there, really big game in Charlottesville this weekend… winner takes the ACC regular season crown. I don’t think UVA has been in the hunt for the tourney #1 seed this late in the season in my lifetime (maybe in the Sampson years – I’d have to look up). Finally, I have something to cheer for in college basketball!

Back to the last thread, that picture of Beltran, McCann and Ellsbury is pure gold.

I watched the first season of Vikings… I’m not sure I would call it a good show but I found it entertaining… My GF hated it.

The Americans starts tonight (in 10 minutes)… Second season got awesome reviews, better reviews than the first, and I really liked the first season

  23. Hankflorida February 26th, 2014 at 9:52 pm

Trisha and a chicken, you are both right depending on the Ellsbury we get. Last year’s Ellsbury definitely first, and the 2011 Ellsbury, we have to think of him batting third because a guy who can find the seats thirty times in a year deserves that spot in the lineup behind Gardener and Jeter.

  24. Blojaldo February 26th, 2014 at 10:02 pm

No brainer. Ellsbury is one of the best leadoff hitters in baseball. Gardner will hit 9th unless there is an injury or eighth against a tough lefty if Girardi wants to split them.

  25. dan l February 26th, 2014 at 10:08 pm

Ellsbury is the perfect 3 hole hitter…sadly Girardi is a moron and will lead off with him. Ellsbury can give Paul O’neill performance plus stolen bases. Gardner’s value is greater at the top of the lineup as he needs 5 pa per night.
