Can’t wait for Sat with CC/Kuroda/Tanaka

Also very happy to have the Monday game broadcast… Seems pretty likely those of us in Jersey will be snowed in.

  2. chicken_stanley February 27th, 2014 at 10:17 pm

on a lighter note – I’ve never seen the tv program “Bates Motel” but I’ve been inundated with commercials lately… Maybe its just me but it looks like the creepiest show ever… a modern day Oedipus. Yuck!

Seems pretty likely those of us in Jersey will be snowed in.

    ——————

pk – I’m trying to get back to VA from Syracuse tomorrow… temps have dropped into the single digits and 12-14 inches of lake effect snow predicted for tonight… Back home, 12 inches of snow would mean a state of emergency would be declared and the National guard would be mobilzed! :)

I am so sorry so many of you have had to deal with such a long, cold, and unforgiving Winter.

But Spring is coming and so are the Yankees.

    Have a good night.

For those of you are safe please stay that way.

For those of you in harm’s way may you find safety and may the good Lord protect you.

See you for the Breakfast club.

    ;)

  5. chicken_stanley February 27th, 2014 at 10:31 pm

I think I will take MTU’s cue and exit stage left. A big difference is I will absolutely not be here for the breakfast club! :)

Hope everyone has a great night

Good Night to all of you.

I used to work with a woman named Tina Master…who provided unending giggles to me when she married a guy named Tom Bates.

  8. MTU February 27th, 2014 at 10:38 pm

No need to thank us jmv. We are thinking of you.

    Just stay safe.

Bojo – almost too good to be true! :)

  10. BoJo February 27th, 2014 at 10:40 pm

Just saw a flick called “The Raid–Redemption.” Out of Philippines I believe. Highly recommended if you like action flicks. They are going to remake it in US, but the original is amazing.

  16. luis February 27th, 2014 at 11:03 pm

    Good night guys,

Sorry for the inconvenience that just happened

I will say one thing though… You are not only uninformed, ignorant, biased and rude, but most of all supremely arrogant… Imagine if I make an opinion about the US ( and trust me, mine would be very, very educated, I don’t base my opinions on two weeks on a place and probably a few propaganda flyers as you seem to do )…I know my place and you don’t

Now go and play with your pals

If this is going to be a political blog so be it.

From the other side it should be noted Venezuela provides free health care and education , including college , and has reduced poverty over the last decade. It is under economic attack by forces that hope to loot the country and these opposition forces are behind much of the violence. It’s escalated since Chavez died since they sense weakness and recent actions to protect the people from price gouging as a result of the orchestrated economic attacks have been unpopular among the business class

This is not to say the government has handled things properly and that that the actions against the protesters were not heavy handed, yet we saw a lot of that here in the 60?s and did not need a coup to move forward
    ________________

Well said and thank you for daring to stand up to the constant right-wing extremism presented here; by people who don’t have a clue how the poor suffered throughout Latin America for the last hundred years and how complex and nuanced the situation is in Venezuela today. I also dislike the heavy handed approach of the government to suppress protests, etc., but again, to paint such a biased picture without considering the other side is wrong.

I too wish Luis and his family and every single person in Venezuela peace and to be safe. And I mean that. Welcome to democracy Luis, where EVERYONE gets to express their opinions even if you don’t like it. And if you do not like the current administration, although half the country does, vote to throw them out of office.

  19. HighHeat February 27th, 2014 at 11:43 pm

Here is the other side, Luis paraphrased by a Venezuelan blogger J. Pineda:

“You should accept that Nicolás Maduro won a fair election in 2013. The poor in Venezuela who support Maduro are not protesting are they? Why? Because they have jobs, their children get to attend school and there is healthcare for all. In the nineties there was no free access to education and healthcare.”

  20. Tar February 28th, 2014 at 1:14 am

“If this is going to be a political blog so be it.”

This is not a political blog, it is a Yankee blog. A blog where many of us have been contributing to for years…. including our Venezuelan friends Luis and JMV (Vaya con dios mi amigos). Two people who if you have read 99% of the comments…. are very well liked here. This is a special circumstance, and obviously by reading the previous post it also has a Baseball angle to it. We care about their well being, we care about their country…get over it.

BTW I’m curious when did you HighHeat and pft2 start posting here?

  21. Deal With It February 28th, 2014 at 2:16 am

“I also dislike the heavy handed approach of the government to suppress protests, etc., but again, to paint such a biased picture without considering the other side is wrong.”

Heavy handed like killing them? Stop making this ABOUT politics in America……it’s not. Luis is living this so I think he knows better the situation there than we do.

    Back to baseball please

  23. Tar February 28th, 2014 at 7:26 am

“Sorry about your countries difficulties …………….

But ……………. Baseball and Politics don’t mix here”

Are you dense? Did you not read Chad’s previous post? Is the concept of special circumstances too much to grasp for you? Why don’t you just “deal with it”….. or you could continue to show everyone what an idiot you are.

For everybody else…sorry somethings have to be said.

  24. Poetkiosk February 28th, 2014 at 7:34 am

Luis is a very valued member here so he deserves everyone’s thoughts and prayers. The only problem tho is that people should be allowed to disagree with his politics, which then changes the forum away from baseball. TBH Luis is cared about as a person, a human, not for his politics, so it might be best if we just got updates on his own personal safety and well being and not political arguments about what is happening, unless we all research the situation so we can respond in an intelligent manner.

    My two cents anyway.

  25. jmills February 28th, 2014 at 7:38 am

No need to apologize, Tar. Luis speaks of human rights, and more and more, sports are playing a more active role over such matters. It was great to see the Rainbow flag alongside the Canadian flag at Toronto’s city hall during the Olympics. Too bad both weren’t carried in the closing ceremonies in front of putrid Putin. Freedom allows us lucky souls to indulge in the great hit of baseball.

  26. jmills February 28th, 2014 at 7:44 am

Many Jay fans are freaking out about second base. I’m looking forward to Ryan Goins. Mark Belanger has moved over to the 4 position.

  27. braeburn February 28th, 2014 at 7:50 am

baseball has always reflected the times that it’s played in.

baseball led the way in 1947 for the rest of the country to follow with desegregation . that was as political as it can get. golf for example had a caucasian only clause as late as 1961.

during the late 60′s in the US any young pro baseball player would get drafted and likely go to viet nam. that was political.

on a personal level,in 1967 ,i was benched and buried by a coach who didn’t like my long hair on an american legion team when i had been the captain of the biggest high school in the state. why? politics would be the answer.
this coach loved j edgar hoover, the viet nam war, and nixon and that kind of mentality.

that said, what i like about baseball or any sport for that matter is that when you get on the athletic field ,politics, race, and socio economic level don’t matter. once on the field no one who dislikes your politics can stop you from throwing or hitting the baseball.

so getting to the baseball field can be political but playing the game isn’t. it’s one of the beauties of the game. i often thought of that right wing american legion coach who tried to stop me from playing baseball when years later i was involved in the pro game. defying him actually became one of the driving forces that made me play more and not less later in my life.

once pro players become wealthy they tend to vote conservative, but pro baseball is made of players from all over the world and from all economic levels and i think this makes baseball a melting pot of different life experiences that makes the game a better place.

so politics are part of baseball before the game starts , but when the first pitch is thrown, it’s just players playing baseball.

…from knowing luis here on the blog, a face is put on the struggle in venezuala and i for one am grateful for luis for sharing his personal experience. cervelli and others yesterday showed chad and others that the venezuelan crisis is an appropriate topic for this blog.

  28. Poetkiosk February 28th, 2014 at 7:58 am

Absolutely agree about politics and sports, the only point though is that people should be free to disagree with Luis and his point of view, and that is what is bothering me – people are shutting down conversation about a topic brought up by Luis – if they don’t agree with Luis. If people disagree they should be just as permitted to discuss the issue.

  29. Doreen February 28th, 2014 at 8:02 am

    braeburn -

I think the issue as far as the blog is concerned is that if we agree the Venezuelan crisis is an appropriate topic, then opposing viewpoints have to be tolerated, as long as they are respectful.

I do not know enough about Venezuelan politics, and I’d venture that many here do not, as well. But, I do know that luis and jmv are friends of the blog, and so, I wish them well and I pray for their safety and for peace, and I have no problem with them talking about their situation here.

But as long as opposition viewpoints are respectful, I do not have an issue with those posts either.

  30. blake February 28th, 2014 at 8:05 am

I’m confused as to why a conversation on Venezuelan politics keeps venturing into American politics?

  31. GregD February 28th, 2014 at 8:08 am

Good morning Yankee friends…….17 days until I go to Spring Training!!! A bucket list item for me!! :)

“if they don’t agree with Luis. If people disagree they should be just as permitted to discuss the issue.”

    poetliosk-

i think we need to use some self discipline and keep the focus on baseball while at the same time being aware of the situation in Venezuela. look at all the players from Venezuela trying to make the yankees team. how can they not be affected by family and friends back home being in danger ? and of course they care about their country. so it’s a part of this yankees spring training.

  33. braeburn February 28th, 2014 at 8:14 am

    doreen-

like you,i don’t know much about venezuelan politics either, but this is a great chance for all of us to learn more about it. Venezuela is baseball crazy from what i can see so i think it won’t hurt any of us to learn more about a place that produces so many players.

  34. austinmac February 28th, 2014 at 8:16 am

Luis and jmv are our blog friends. I support them. The only one’s really arguing with them are people who have never before posted. Talk about an agenda.

  35. Revenge of Stoneburner February 28th, 2014 at 8:19 am

BP showing the love for the hopeful C.C. bounce back:

    5. CC Sabathia
After singlehandedly railroading my fantasy team last year, CC Sabathia will soon become the first starting pitcher in history to post a sub-1.00 ERA in 40 starts while also striking out 500 batters. I’ve done the math, consulted various yogis (including Yogi himself), and, if anything, these are conservative estimates.

My clairvoyance notwithstanding, Sabathia actually does seem a good bet to improve: PECOTA projects him to be a 2.9-win player this year, a full 2.1 wins better than he was a year ago. Still not great for a guy in line to make $23 million, but in a division race that figures to be a dogfight from Opening Day, the Yankees will take any boost they can get.

Of course, there are the very genuine concerns about Sabathia’s durability, considering the sustained drops in fastball velocity he’s suffered the last two seasons. His spiking walk rates aren’t very comforting, either. In fact, a number of Sabathia’s peripherals last year hit career worsts, resulting in his unsightly 4.78 ERA. For a pitcher who will turn 34 midseason, none of these signs are very encouraging, to say the least.

So why am I picking Sabathia to rebound this season? Well, for starters, some of these trends have cropped up at other times in his career, too. Per PITCHf/x Pitch Values, Sabathia’s fastball has been sub-par for both of the past two seasons, but that didn’t stop him from posting a 4-win season in 2012. And in 2010, Sabathia’s walk rate was even higher than it was last year, which suggests that an inexorable rise into Edinson Volquez territory is no guarantee. It’s also worth noting that his K/9 rate was exactly the same in 2010 as it was in 2013. Sabathia has dealt with these difficulties before—albeit not all in the same season—and has still found ways to make his innings useful.

Power pitchers rarely see a sudden resurgence of their, well, “powers” in their mid-thirties, and I seriously doubt Sabathia will be the magic exception. If he can adapt to his diminishing abilities, though—and benefit from better fortune on batted balls—then another season of 200-plus solidly effective innings is in the cards. The baseball media may be ready to hand the reigns of ace-hood to Masahiro Tanaka, but I’m not convinced ol’ man CC has given them up just yet. —Nick Bacarella

  39. GregD February 28th, 2014 at 8:22 am

I think CC will bounce back, he focused on strength in the offseason versus dieting……..if he does bounce back, the Yankees will be tough…..his ability to go deep in games is so key to the stability of the entire staff…….

  40. blake February 28th, 2014 at 8:24 am

I think CC will bounce back as well…..remember that Lester wasn’t very good in 2012 either and he found his form again last year. I doubt CC will ever be what he was again…..but will he be good again? I think so…..

  41. Cashmoney February 28th, 2014 at 8:26 am

At the same time, Buster Olney wrote:
Some scouts wonder whether Abreu has the bat speed necessary to be an impact player in the big leagues, or even an average player. The Houston Astros were aggressive in trying to sign Abreu, and they fell far short, bidding $55 million; the Red Sox were outbid by a whopping $28 million, having offered about $40 million.

But the Steamer projection system? It loves Abreu, predicting a line of .276/.362/.546 with 31 home runs. ZiPS has Abreu hitting .273/.364/.494 with 26 home runs. Certainly, playing in a homer-friendly park like the Cell will help his power output.

What do you think? Let’s set the over/under at 29.5 home runs.

  42. AAA February 28th, 2014 at 8:27 am

I don’t think Sabathia does bounce back. That implies recovering velocity which almost certainly isn’t going to happen. What he can do is adapt to what he now brings to the mound (read: not power) and be better than what he was last season.

on a baseball note it was great to listen to the yankees game and other games while working on business income tax with freezing temperatures outside and snow falling.

john ryan murphy continues to impress. his problem may be getting too much success and notice after being on the back burner for so long. i hope he takes nothing for granted and keeps the strong work ethic going. it wouldn’t hurt him to start at triple a and have that reality temper his expectations.

i was shocked to listen to jesus montero play half a game at first for the mariners . i thought people here said his career was over. maybe the mariners are just being nice and letting him play because he’s venzuelan :)

he lined a rocket to third that was turned into a double play at second base.. cano getting a hit. abraham almonte having a nice game too.

“I don’t think Sabathia does bounce back. That implies recovering velocity which almost certainly isn’t going to happen. What he can do is adapt to what he now brings to the mound (read: not power) and be better than what he was last season.”

well it’s relative…..and depends on your definition of “bounce back” …..I don’t think he’s going to be 2009 CC again or anything…..but can he figure out how to post a sub 4 ERA and win 15 games? I think he can…….

Lets not forget that he’s still 6’8″ and should be able to create a great plane on his fastball even if its 91 instead of 95……last year his arm slot and angle was out of whack…..he was on the side of the ball a lot which make his fastball cut to the middle of the plate and it really screwed up the tilt on his slider.

I think if mechancially he can get back to where he needs to be and get back on top and pitching downhill then he will still be really good even with a little less velo…..he’s going to have to adapt and command and mix better…..but all pitchers have to do that as they age.

  49. blake February 28th, 2014 at 8:34 am

I was pretty amazed yesterday at how much thinner Jeter looks……I know they said it’s only 5 lbs but to me it looks more like 10 or 15.

And on this article %BLOG_TITLE%. I was actually excited enough to write a thought :) I do have a couple of questions for you if it’s allright. Is it only me or does it look as if like a few of the comments appear as if they are written by brain dead individuals? :-P And, if you are writing on other places, I would like to keep up with you. The tree requires very little water to survive. Watering it twice a week is more than enough, it has also survived many drought conditions but drought also has many adverse effects on it like reduction in flower production and growth rate. If you have an oleander in your backyard, treating them with fertilizers may help the tree grow big and more flowery. Use a layer of compost under the plant in each spring. If you want to retain moisture and practice weed control, add a 2 inch layer of mulch. Use a balanced fertilizer that has phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium in equal quantities and follow the instructions printed on the package for using it. Watch for oleander caterpillars as they can destroy your tree within two weeks. Cut off affected leaves and branches and pick the caterpillars with your hands and place them in a plastic bag. If you want to kill these caterpillars, place this bag in a freezer for 24 hours or use a pesticide which contains bacillus thuringiensis. Before using the insecticide, read the package instructions carefully.

Before tournant le rappel ?? Now, je vais mettre l’appel vers Tyson. Thanks John. I avoided major money wasting baby items such as luxury strollers, designer diaper bags, fancy baby bedding and single purpose items such as changing table, high chair or baby food maker, which can cost $1,500 $2,000 in aggregate. Instead I spent on moderately priced, versatile, yet, safe and comfortable baby purchases, and saved $1,000 $1,500.
