Thursday morning notes: Rain, rain, go away

We’ll start this day with a little bit of batting practice video I shot a couple of days ago and never got around to posting on the blog. Why? Partially because I don’t want to go searching for yet another Derek Jeter picture, and partially so that there will be at least a little bit of baseball on the blog today.

The concern at the moment is the way the sky looks this morning.

Weather.com tells me there’s a 60 percent chance of rain today. There are quite a few dark clouds in the sky over Steinbrenner Field, and it looks fairly threatening at the moment. Obviously the Yankees are expecting to play today and get Jeter on the field for the first time. No clue what would happen if the game were rained out. Take Jeter on the road tomorrow? Push his debut back? Have him get work in at the minor league complex tomorrow or somewhere indoors today?

Best hope is that the rain holds off and the game goes on as planned. This is one of those days in Yankees camp when there’s an obvious main event and a clear focus.

This is the day Jeter’s supposed to play. Rain, rain, go away.

Eduardo Nunez· Eduardo Nunez feels fine today. He said he ate some bad salmon on Tuesday night. That’s what led to his stomach issues. It’s not the same thing Alfonso Soriano had. He’s scheduled to make the trip to Lakeland tomorrow, and he expects to play.

· Pretty good line from Nunez about not having the flu, which caused Soriano to miss almost a week of workouts: “A week?” Nunez said. “If I miss a week, I don’t make the team.” Give the guy credit for knowing he’s got to earn it this spring.

· No update on Tyler Austin. He went to a doctor yesterday for a series of tests, and he expects to hear back later today. Last year he was diagnosed with a bone bruise. He said he’s feeling much better and hoping for a diagnosis that’s similarly minor this time. Mostly, though, he just wants to know what’s going on.

· No official word from the Yankees, but it certainly looks like Addison Maruszak has been added to big league camp. He was called up yesterday to provide an extra infielder, but he’s back with the team today and now he has a locker with his name on it. Other day-by-day minor league additions never get lockers of their own. Yankees might have decided they’d like to have the additional infielder and flexibility.

· Three pitchers up from minor league camp available if necessary: Branden Pinder, Brett Gerritse and Jeremy Bleich. The lefty Bleich is a former supplemental round pick who’s battled injury problems, but he was healthy all last year and pitched pretty well in Trenton. I actually wondered if he might get a big league invite this spring. Pinder was in camp last year as a NRI, back when the Yankees had an absurd number of minor leaguers in camp.

· Random conversation of the morning was with outfielder Antoan Richardson. You really never expect a Bahamas accent in a baseball clubhouse, but Richardson is from Nassau and still spends his winters there (played high school ball in Florida, college ball at Vanderbilt). He’s an insanely nice guy. I went to the Bahamas a couple of years ago, and Antoan told me he’d invite me back. I’m absolutely going to try to make him my best friend by the end of camp so that he’ll actually follow up on that promise.

· Only one live batting practice session today: David Herndon is scheduled to throw a simulated game, pitching to Jose Gil and facing both Richardson and Wheeler.

Game better not be rained out

    Blake-

I wouldn’t give them Phelps and Williams.

Besides, who says the M’s need an Of’er ?”

    They do….

  3. Tackelberry February 27th, 2014 at 10:02 am

Nobody has signed Diaz yet? Guess Yanks weren’t only ones that were not impressed

  4. pkyankfan69 February 27th, 2014 at 10:03 am

If you look at the hourly forecast for Tampa is says 0% chance from 12 – 4… The Precip chances get around 30% 5 PM on… According to that, they game should be fine.

  5. blake February 27th, 2014 at 10:04 am

Food poisoning is rough…..I had one bad case of it and that was enough for me. We rarely eat out anymore and I’m fairly OCD about food preparation…..FYI ….you can’t tell if meat is done by color…..get a good instant read thermometer!

If you want to prevent it make an offering to the Rain Gods.

HOpefully, Ichiro hows enough this Spring that Yanks might be able to move him, even if they have to eat some salary. Don’t think he’s going to be content to be a 5th outfielder

  9. blake February 27th, 2014 at 10:06 am

“HOpefully, Ichiro hows enough this Spring that Yanks might be able to move him, even if they have to eat some salary. Don’t think he’s going to be content to be a 5th outfielder”

And hopefully everyone stays healthy so suddenly he doesn’t become the 4th or 3rd outfielder

  10. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 10:06 am

Trade Ichiro back to the Mariners for his farewell season!!

The M’s are probably looking for some combo of OF or pitching help. I still see them dealing with the Rays. I heard Mets from a few writers, but what could they give up for Franklin that wouldn’t be counterproductive?

  11. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 10:07 am

Watch Crazy Jack trade Franklin straight up for Ike Davis lmao.. we’d all be in here looking like Shane Victorino.

  12. pkyankfan69 February 27th, 2014 at 10:09 am

    MTU,

All of my current offerings are out to the snow gods in hopes I can bribe them to not dump another foot of snow on the ground here Sun night – Tues next week. Enough is enough, a lot of the companies I sell to can’t work when there is snow on the ground (or sell what they make to those actually doing the work outside)

  14. Hassey February 27th, 2014 at 10:12 am

rainouts and forced day-night doubleheaders will not derail this train from reaching the Series this year. It’s just a matter of time

  15. Cashmoney February 27th, 2014 at 10:15 am

They know what Nunie is by now…..it’s more about whether or not they think Sizemkre or someone else is better than him at this point than what Nunie does

  17. DONNYBROOK February 27th, 2014 at 10:18 am

I believe with Baez coming on big time, Theo would seriously be interested in dealing Castro and that contract of his. The Cubs are gong nowhere in 2014, and Castro’s value could easily continue trending downward. Castro has proven to be a Consistent Airhead, and Theo has proven he will Suddenly deal a player he perceives to be on the downswing/Garciaparra.

  18. blake February 27th, 2014 at 10:20 am

If Castro hits the suddenly his contract is a bargain and they could always move him to 2B…..I don’t think Theo will sell low on him now…..

  19. MTU February 27th, 2014 at 10:20 am

    DB-

    Good. I’ll take him.

    ;)

  20. DONNYBROOK February 27th, 2014 at 10:20 am

The Sizemore vs Nunez debate also could have “opt out” considerations involved, depending on what we see in ST.

  21. blake February 27th, 2014 at 10:23 am

@BGlobeSports: Is AJ Pierzynski really MLB’s most hated player? He says ‘I think A-Rod took over for me this year’ http://t.co/U1FSjOnGJZ #RedSox

I believe with Baez coming on big time

    =============================

They’re already talking about moving him to 2B.

  23. blake February 27th, 2014 at 10:28 am

I think the cubs might trade Castro eventually…..the problem with this though is if he continues to stink then why would we want him? And if he actually turns into what he could then the cubs won’t trade him……Id try to buy low now but I don’t see the cubs actually selling low

  24. DONNYBROOK February 27th, 2014 at 10:29 am

since the cubs are working hard on replacing theirs, maybe it can be moved to NY.

  29. DONNYBROOK February 27th, 2014 at 10:33 am

The problem with Castro is between the ears, and that’s a tough fix at the MLB Level. You send him to the Bushes, and his value nosedives, while he is doing Nothing for your Big Team with that Huge contract of his. Again, Theo has shown he will pull-the-trigger.

  30. MTU February 27th, 2014 at 10:34 am

I’ve been down on the Ellsbury signing and I still don’t like it…..but if he manages to play 150 games this year I think he hits:

.306/.355/.470 with 19 homers and 50 steals and is a 6 WAR player. That would be awesome

Yes, the dollars, cents and Cano debate sours the acquisition of a talented player like Ellsbury. The guy is a winner and contributed greatly to two WS teams. He’s going to get another chance at the WS this year.

Btw, I watched a short doc on marijuana in CO last night and business appears to be booming. Doesn’t seem like anarchy has overtaken the state, either, so let’s hope our state officials are taking notice!!! ;)

I picture Shame being like Bridgitte Fonda in Jackie Brown

  54. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 11:13 am

blake – That’s a great 2015 line up. I feel the same about Ellsbury.. despite how I feel about his contract, I’m excited for the addition of his style of play. I just feel a little badly for the guy because it will be so hard for him to live up to the expectations associated with the deal. That Crawford deal…. eesh…

  55. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 11:15 am

    LOL, no comment.

  56. Hassey February 27th, 2014 at 11:16 am

    ———–

It’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison… plus we don’t have a guy like Gardner playing somewhere else in the INF for the next 5 years.

Pretty sure the Gardner and Ellsbury deals will be compared until Gardner’s expires.

  59. Hassey February 27th, 2014 at 11:24 am

the only thing that can stop this runaway train this season is if those two collide in the left-center gap at 80mph

  60. Ys Guy February 27th, 2014 at 11:24 am

rather than see gardner’s and ellsbury’s contracts and skill sets as playing out against each other i see them as complimentary.

  61. Ys Guy February 27th, 2014 at 11:26 am

besides that, your objection to the ellsbury contract can’t be based on the Gardner contract since it didnt exsist when they signed Ellsbury.

  62. Hassey February 27th, 2014 at 11:26 am

i feel very strongly both ways

  63. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 11:29 am

I don’t know how they’d ‘play out against’ each other. They’re going to be a point of comparison for years though. And I’ve objected to the Ellsbury deal from the start as I hated the Crawford deal and mocked the Sox for it mercilessly.. the Ellsbury deal is for more money and an older player.

But the time frame has nothing to do with the opinion… couldn’t it easily be argued that if they intended to retain Garnder – which they clearly did, as they’ve done it – that spending on Ellsbury was redundant?

  64. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 11:30 am

Time frame isn’t an issue at all regarding an opinion on the deals. It’s going to be interesting to see how they play out and which player actually ends up being more valuable.

  66. blake February 27th, 2014 at 11:34 am

Don’t see them in anyway complimentary. I see them as duplication. It’s too bad Choo didn’t take the NYY money. The Yankees would be better with him than Ellsbury, IMO.

  68. Ys Guy February 27th, 2014 at 11:37 am

Well if we’re going to count production vs. salary then guys like cervelli and phelps will be the most valuable. But you don’t win a WS because of guys like that.

I still don’t see how you defend wanting the Tulo contract given your objection to the Ellsbury deal.

  69. Ys Guy February 27th, 2014 at 11:41 am

especially given that they will have to trade good pieces to get Tulo when they didnt to get Ellsbury.

  74. pkyankfan69 February 27th, 2014 at 11:47 am

I’d take that Tulo contract in a heartbeat… His #’s away from home aren’t quite as good but they’re still pretty awesome, esp for a SS (and it’s not like NYS is a bad place to hit either.)

I’d give them Sanchez + Williams + Austin + Ramirez (or something like that) for Tulo, no question.

  75. RadioKev February 27th, 2014 at 11:48 am

To me, Tulo is more injury prone than Ellsbury. But yes, he’s better than Ellsbury, and he’s bar-none the best at his position.

I tend to agree with AAA because I think they would be crazy to trade him this season.. but the Rockies have done dumb things before.

  86. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 27th, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Shame, why do you see Gardner and Ellsbury as redundant. It’s clear that they will both start, and it’s clear that Ellsbury has CF. By getting Ellsbury, they are getting a quality CF who is a great leadoff hitter and base stealer (IMO), and Gardner has basically as many games in LF as he does in CF. That leaves Soriano to DH and everyone’s happy. If they kept Brett in CF, they would have been searching for a LF. I don’t remember the market, but I see it as a win win to do it this way. Brett is 24. He has plenty of time to transition to CF if that is in the cards.

How is your tuna fish diet coming along?

  87. blake February 27th, 2014 at 12:11 pm

Probably can’t sell that to fans and neither guy loses value if they wait til after 2015 as both are signed thru at least 2017.”

There are two ways of looking at it…..they could get a major prospect haul by trading Tulo and Cargo and save tons of money to sign other players with…… If you’re not winning with expensive star players sometimes it makes more sense to start fresh…..tough decision but sometimes necessary

  88. Cashmoney February 27th, 2014 at 12:13 pm

Trish, Brett is 29 and close to 30.

  89. blake February 27th, 2014 at 12:13 pm

I don’t know if they’ll trade him this year or not…..probably not….but if they stink I could see them doing it sometime before 2015. Tulos comments kinda sound like he’s almost expecting to be traded at some point

  90. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 27th, 2014 at 12:16 pm

Oops, he is 30. I don’t know what I was thinking.

Well then, LF is a ducky place for him!

  91. Cashmoney February 27th, 2014 at 12:16 pm

blake, Tulo reads like a pipe dream… Yanks don’t even have enough for lesser at the moment, maybe things will change in 15 with top tier chips having a good year thus becoming more of a viable idea.

  92. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 27th, 2014 at 12:17 pm

And if Jacoby doesn’t last out the 7, Brett can help out.

  93. Tackelberry February 27th, 2014 at 12:17 pm

I would not give up the farm for Tulo. Trades like that is why our farm system never gets anywhere. Would much rather trade for a guy like Owings or Gregorius. Sorry, but we don’t have to have a superstar at every position

  94. Tackelberry February 27th, 2014 at 12:19 pm

I think Jacoby can be productive for most of the contract. JOhnny Damon was 32 when Yanks signed him to a 4 year deal and he was a productive player till age 36.

  95. Cashmoney February 27th, 2014 at 12:19 pm

Not really…..they haven’t traded any prospects that have significantly hurt them. Their farm system never has gotten anywhere because they have picked at the back of the draft forever and because they haven’t done a stellar job of developing what talent they do get……it’s not because of trades

  97. blake February 27th, 2014 at 12:21 pm

@neal_kendrick: Alex Rodriguez had 189 home runs as a Mariners shortstop. Every other shortstop in Mariners history has 208 home runs combined.

    That’s amazing

  98. blake February 27th, 2014 at 12:22 pm

It also gives you an idea of what an incredible advantage it is to have plus offense like that at SS…..

  99. Cashmoney February 27th, 2014 at 12:23 pm

Trish, traditionally, you want power in corner of spots which Brett isn’t, the idea here is if you do have two guys who can do similar things, you then look for offense in traditional offensively inept positions. Yanks happen to now have power at C (finally) and maybe some surprising atypical power in Ells. I would be prefer two power sticks at 1b and 3b then you pretty fine in going with that configuration. I don’t think the players are redundant, it just takes different approach in constructing a roster.

  100. Cashmoney February 27th, 2014 at 12:25 pm

It also gives you an idea of what an incredible advantage it is to have plus offense like that at SS…..

Yanks had bernie, Jete and po, those are incredible advantages they had enjoyed and it essentially made the team more flexible in traditional offensive spots.

  101. RadioKev February 27th, 2014 at 12:26 pm

Rockies used a 4 man rotation in 2012. Anything is possible.

  102. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 12:26 pm

It’s redundant in the sense that they now need to find a way to squeeze power out of non-traditional power positions going forward. I think for the reasons you named their skill sets are almost a perfect match. I’m not unhappy with having both players, I just question the allocation of those resources since the Yankees seem determined to limit their own spending.

  103. Tackelberry February 27th, 2014 at 12:27 pm

So I don’t know how valid it those particular answers really are.

I’d give them Sanchez + Williams + Austin + Ramirez (or something like that) for Tulo, no question.

    __________________
    I wouldn’t
    —————

Sanchez, Williams, Austin and Ramirez would be a bad deal for Tulo. Could be worth it, but you can’t give up all those guys for him.
    ——————–
I would… We already know Tulo is an elite SS despite injury concerns. Maybe one of Austin or Willams make it in the majors as an OFer, neither is likely going to be a star. Ramirez is likely a BP guy. Sanchez might be a star but he’s got plenty to go. I’m taking the player who has already be proven to be elite in the majors…

Tulo’s got 6 years – $114M with a $15M club option (4M buyout) at the end… If he was a FA this year he would have gotten way more than that, it’s really not a bad contract.

  110. blake February 27th, 2014 at 12:32 pm

So why empty the farm of what little talent we have then? Lets give these guys a chance to develop with us”

Well 1) because they don’t have any can’t miss prospects…..they might all bust 2) because they are a win now club with the amount of money they have spent on players around 30 years old. I wouldn’t gut the farm system or trade a lot of it for just anyone…..but Tulo is a guy I would

  111. RadioKev February 27th, 2014 at 12:37 pm

That type of talent is all too high end to trade for one guy. Chances are they don’t make it, but it could be a Teixeira to the Braves type of deal.

This is the part I’m still trying to figure…. I agree, I think this club has a short window right now. I’m going to be very interested to watch how they deal with the next transition because it’s going to either cost them a ton of money or a lot in prospects to field a team.

He’s 29…..flags fly forever….if he helps them win more titles it’s worth it. Again they have committed to winnig now by signing Ellsbury and McCann and Beltren etc…..

  118. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 12:42 pm

This is the 2015 club (lmk if I’m missing anyone):

    Ellsbury CF
    Gardner LF
    Beltran DH/RFer
    McCann C
    Tex 1B
    ? DH/3B (Alex???)
    ? 2B
    ? SS
    ? RF

I’m was initially hoping one of the farm OFers would break out and be the 4th OFer in 2015 splitting time with Beltran but they’ll need to add power instead unless they can find a way to add it somewhere else.

  120. blake February 27th, 2014 at 12:43 pm

  121. RadioKev February 27th, 2014 at 12:44 pm

Flags do fly forever. Still, I don’t know if Tulo makes us a lock to win a championship. I wouldn’t feel great about selling out all of our depth for him. Two top guys? Sure. Top four? Hesitant.

  126. blake February 27th, 2014 at 12:50 pm

Sometimes you develop your core and buy players to supplement it…..sometimes you have to buy your core and hope you can develop players to supplement that…..the yanks clearly saw themselves as being the latter of the two

  127. Shame Spencer February 27th, 2014 at 12:51 pm

Hal told us he wants to field a championship caliber team every year. That’s their stated mandate, not ours.

  128. Ys Guy February 27th, 2014 at 1:08 pm

the rockies seem adrift. they are not contenders, they have a very strong farm system but they acted this past offseason as if they were just a couple of pieces away from contending. Adding Morneau and Anderson presupposes a core that can contend, but they arent there, but trading Fowler, who many think is on the cusp of a breakout works against that. There is little to no chance that they will still have CarGo by the time they can contend with thier prospects, so they should have traded him to add to the farm, but they didnt.

Tulo is a different story, he’s signed through ’20. If these prospects are going to come up and make the Rockies relevent again, Tulo can still be around to be in integral part of that team, so even if they go rebuild, they might want to keep him.

I like Tulo and I’m ok with his contract, what I’m not ok with is what it will take to get him.
