Man I wish this game was on YES

  2. Cashmoney February 28th, 2014 at 8:46 am

I echoed blake’s sentiment, In Nunez We Trust!

  3. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 8:47 am

    Who is Adam Warren ?

    Another Phelps ? Better ? Worse ?

It would be nice to know wouldn’t it.

    ;)

MTU, I would also like an island, but I want to be installed as an absolute ruler!

  5. blake February 28th, 2014 at 8:50 am

They should hire Seinfeld to say Nunez! (In his Newman! Voice) every time he kicks one

  6. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 8:51 am

    Cash-

Since it’s your Island you can do as you please.

You can even have your own harem.

Last day of February…..thank goodness….worst month of the year. Ready for March and a hint of spring time

We are going to get dumped on by a monster storm staring today.

If it heads East intact you guys are in for some more sh*t.

We likely will get flash flooding and snow in the mountains.

I was planning a weekend trip to San Diego but cancelled due to weather. I hope we get some of the rain here.

So this game is not televised on MLB.com? But, I want to see Sanchez hit.

  14. Cashmoney February 28th, 2014 at 8:56 am

is like 20-30 for til midweek in NYC/NJ, it’s been a long winter. Sometimes, I wish I live in warmer climates, but I guess it could be worse, I could have been born in Siberia.

It’s times like these that I wonder what Kevin Towers is thinking this morning – could be he is choosing his breakfast – or choosing which Yankees backstop to acquire

On another front, old mother Russia went all Red Dawn on the Ukraine I see – and thank goodness i do not have any bitcoins

Reason #43255 why there are doubts that Jose Ramirez cannot make it as a starter long term – that and he is never pitched over 150 IP as a starter – let alone 125 IP in a season

  20. Cashmoney February 28th, 2014 at 9:01 am

I am sure MTU. Though I am pretty impervious to cold but hate being bundled up… but yeah, I see it first hand with my folks. When It gets cold, I would call them and advise them not go out nowadays.

Ramirez he an oblique injury that killed last year. That pretty much ends his bullpen chance.

We still need an EIG and a good infielder. Hal, are you listening?

  28. blake February 28th, 2014 at 9:07 am

    Mac,
yea I’m sure a lot depends on where you live……that’s my rankings based on where I live. I love October….it’s always been my favorite month…. down in Texas I’m sure the dead of summer is pretty rough.

  29. Ys Guy February 28th, 2014 at 9:08 am

Nunez is very important to this team. I know ppl want to make his D the butt of jokes, which is fair, but the Yankees need him to get it together over there, b/c Kelly Johnson is likely to be needed alot over at 2B

  30. blake February 28th, 2014 at 9:08 am

as JF said the other day…..to the bullpen with you JRam……let him get this healed up then bring him back as a reliever.

He might make a great closer.

That would be a nice package deal.

    Real nice.

  41. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 9:18 am

I’d take a flier on Hanrahan. He’s more of a sure bet than Bailey to pitch this year cause his was an elbow injury, not shoulder. Also, would like to see more of Tateyama. Looked impressive yesterday. Cashman says he is death on righties, but please don’t let him face lefties. Pretty honest evealuation.

  42. austinmac February 28th, 2014 at 9:18 am

I’m sorry but a 27 year old career minor leaguer leaves me doubting no one else saw the talent the Yankees see. A 21 year old hitting like he did in the PCL is called Owings. That is a prospect. Anna is a utility player, at best, in my estimation.

  43. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 9:18 am

I think he can opt out around May 1

  45. austinmac February 28th, 2014 at 9:20 am

    MTU,

You can go to San Jacinto near Houston to see where Anna lost his team. The Texans played an early morning game the visiting team(in our minds) was not prepared for.

I want a good young SS for the future. Not another patch job.

I’m liking the idea of Castro at 3b, Owings at SS.

Anyone have a problem with that concept ?

  47. Cashmoney February 28th, 2014 at 9:21 am

Mac, here is a good comp if he remember him, Andy Stankiewicz.

The minor-league deal for New York Yankees 2B Scott Sizemore includes opt out clauses if he is not on the major league roster by May 1 and Aug. 1. – See more at: http://www.kffl.com/player/153.....zx0vd.dpuf

  49. austinmac February 28th, 2014 at 9:21 am

    MTU,
there are rumblings that the Cubs are gonna move Baez to 2B and keep Castro at SS……I think if I’m Theo that’s what I would do unless I can get a major haul for Castro. He’s only 23……huge upside…..I just wouldn’t give up on a Bryant , Castro, Baez infield if I were Theo at this point.

Why give up a C + for a SS, when Drew remains unsigned and will take a 2 yr deal?

  59. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 9:26 am

Theo is a very shrewd evaluator of talent and a very good GM. Very rarely does he make stupid deals

  60. Revenge of Stoneburner February 28th, 2014 at 9:26 am

Bryant , Castro, Baez infield if I were Theo at this point.

Bryant could end up in the OF – possibly

  61. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 9:26 am

    Blake-

    Yes. That’s a tough one.

We have catching depth. I think Murphy will be a good one too.

If Owings is the real deal we need him more than we need Sanchez so I guess my answer is yes.

  62. Cashmoney February 28th, 2014 at 9:26 am

Mac, Dean Anna remind me very much of Andy, no exceptional tools, okay on D, as 27 year who had ‘break out’ season in PCL, I don’t think much of him certainly not as an regular anywhere. but we shall see.

  63. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 9:27 am

If Drew is still unsigned after the June Draft, then Yanks should pounce

  64. blake February 28th, 2014 at 9:27 am

If Hal won’t spend any money…..then Sanchez for Owings might be the trade they have to make…..they could let Owings compete for the 2B or 3B job this year and then play him at SS when Jeter rests and then plan on him taking over SS in 2015. It would hurt to lose Sanchez…..but they have McCann signed long term…..Murphy behind him….and then other high upside catching prospects down below……they need infield help badly.

  65. blake February 28th, 2014 at 9:28 am

Bryant could end up in the OF – possibly”

he could….but if he can handle 3B why would you do that? Either way…..I don’t think they are trading Castro now.

  66. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 9:28 am

I guess everyone has given up on the idea of getting Tulo?

  67. blake February 28th, 2014 at 9:29 am

“Why give up a C + for a SS, when Drew remains unsigned and will take a 2 yr deal?”

it’s a good point….I’d rather just sign Drew and keep the prospects but if Hal won’t spend anymore money then that option may be off the table.

  68. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 9:29 am

agree on Sanchez. Murphy looks like he will be a good one, and this kid Luis Torrens could be a fast mover in the system. For Owings, I could give up Sanchez. Not for Gregorius though.

  69. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 9:30 am

Forget Tulo. Rockies would want half the farm for him.

  70. blake February 28th, 2014 at 9:30 am

“I guess everyone has given up on the idea of getting Tulo?”

I haven’t but it’s not realistic enough right now to talk about much…..first the Yankees farm system would probably have to progress to even have enough to get him….and 2nd the Rockies would have to make him available and there isn’t any indication that they have yet….

  71. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 9:31 am

    Blake-

I make Castro a target. Now or in the future. Best time might be now because his stock is down.

    Try to pry him loose.

We should have grabbed Ubaldo or Santana so that Nova would have been freed up in trade.

  72. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 9:31 am

Some of you got spoiled with the length of time Posada was behind the plate. McCann will be a liability back there in 2+ seasons. Hang onto Sanchez.

  73. austinmac February 28th, 2014 at 9:32 am

Tulu and Castro are just not available. Even if they were others have much more young talent to offer.

I would trade Sanchez for Owings. I don’t know if he is close enough for the D Backs.

When you look at the Dumb deals the Rocks made this past offseason, and how they look to fare this season, they will be looking to deal Tulo and that contract.

  76. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 9:34 am

    Drew is a patch.

    Owings is a fix.

That is why you go for Owings over Drew.

We have plenty of good young Catchers to trade.

Who knows how Sanchez will turn out.

    All prospects are suspects.

We need IF help much, much more.

    ;)

  77. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 9:36 am

I’m hoping that by next season we have a surplus of young OF’er’s and Pitchers too so we have trade material to fill out our crumbling IF.

It will have to be almost completely rebuilt starting next season.

  78. blake February 28th, 2014 at 9:39 am

    MTU,
really they could use Owings and Drew…..the problem is that one you spend just money….the other you have to trade prospects…..

I’d love for them to get Owings and sign Drew too……then have a real infield. Let Roberts play until he gets hurt then call up Owings to replace him……

  79. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 9:39 am

The minute that Heathcott shows he is healthy again and producing I trade him.

He will always be an injury risk. His style of play guarantees it.

For that same reason, other clubs would be hesitant to give up anything of value for Heathcott. He has to first prove he can stay healthy for an extended period.

  82. blake February 28th, 2014 at 9:43 am

    trade Sanchez for Owings
    Sign Drew.

you have 2 infield spots covered for 2015…..Owings can start at AAA and stay there until Roberts gets hurt….then call him up and you have an infield of Drew, Jeter, Owings, Tex by the end of the season.

    Sounds good to me.

  83. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 9:44 am

For all we know Murphy might turn out better than Sanchez.

Why overemphasize a guy who hasn’t even played a single ML game yet.

Since we have so many catchers he’s expendable in the right deal.

Any one of them is IMO.

Don’t over hug, or under hug. Take a balanced view.

  84. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 9:45 am

Some of you guys like to think you’re building a Dynasty. A Teams does that, and next thing you know you’ve turned into the Rockies. I prefer something along the lines of the George Allen approach.

if Sizemore is can play I don’t even think Nunez will be on the team
    =======================================
Sizemore has never been any better than Nunez in his career and he’s not on the 40 man. Sizemore also had very similar defensive problems when he came up but he got better (nunez can, too). and Sizemore is not on ghe 40 and can be put in scranton.

  92. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 9:53 am

Couple of other thngs from yesterday. Battle for a second lefty in the pen could be interesting one. Leroux looked good yesterday. Also have Cabral, and anxious to see that kid Fred Lewis, a fireballer who really came on last year. Tateyama could be a righty option out of the pen if he continues to pitch well. Cashman said he is death on lefties, but they should keep him away from lefties. O’Brien looks like a monster up there, but he obviously needs to work on making better contact and being more patient at the plate. Wonder if he could be moved to the outfield.

    braeburn-

    I hear you.

Yankees self-evaluation skills have been somewhat suspect at times.

But they must get better at it so they can function efficiently.

Trading guys away for other things you need is an essential function.

    2. Leave guys in the minors for 10 years.

I’m convinced Mike Trout would still be in AA if he was drafted by the Yankees.

  99. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 9:57 am

I liked what I saw yesterday from Leroux. The variance hitters will see between him and the rest of the Yankee bullpen will throw hitters off stride for an inning at least.

  100. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 9:59 am

If the Yankees don’t start clearing out their deadwood they will loose a lot of guys for nothing to the Rule 5 draft.

Now that is just plain stupid.

    Use it or loose it.

Time to start pruning the tree so the whole tree is healthier.

“Sizemore has never been any better than Nunez in his career and he’s not on the 40 man. Sizemore also had very similar defensive problems when he came up but he got better (nunez can, too). and Sizemore is not on ghe 40 and can be put in scranton.”

Sizemore has played 160 games in his career and has been worth 1.2 fWAR over that time……Nunez has played 270 games in his career and has been worth -1.9 fWAR. It’s a different of 3 wins over their careers…..not saying Sizemore is a world beater or anything…..but Nunez is a negative win player his whole career/

  102. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 10:00 am

Watched Putz the other night. He looked Overweight.

  103. braeburn February 28th, 2014 at 10:00 am

    mtu-

who would be better for the future of the yankees ?
abraham almonte in center cheap so money would be available for other positions or ellsbury in center with no money for other positions of need?

from seeing what almonte is doing with the mariners, i’m not sure the yankees shouldn’t have gone with the home grown route.

  104. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 10:00 am

Nuno should be considered as lefty candidate for the Pen too if necessary.

We are in the business of getting outs.

If you move Nunez in a trade for Owings, you’re really rolling the dice. First you’d have to move Owings off SS (he’s played all of 10 games at 2b in his pro career) , then you’d be totally dependent on Roberts and Sizemore’s health (not a good bet). Longterm it might be a good move, but this year very dicey.

  106. blake February 28th, 2014 at 10:04 am

    Chip,
I’d probably make that trade but not sure if the Dbacks would though. Honestly I think they really want to trade Didi more than Owings……but we’ll see.

I’m sorry but a 27 year old career minor leaguer leaves me doubting no one else saw the talent the Yankees see. A 21 year old hitting like he did in the PCL is called Owings. That is a prospect. Anna is a utility player, at best, in my estimation.
    ===============================================

    Dino Anna:

    Was blocked in SD by:

    – Headley
    – Gyorko
    – Cabrera
    – Forsythe
    – Amarista

….. all of which we’d be pretty happy to have right now !

  108. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 10:05 am

I wouldn’t give up Murphy for Didi though. If they insist in Didi, then I only offer them Romine or Cervelli

  109. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 10:05 am

You guys can play around with your fWAR stuff all you want, but this is a team game, and a player’s value is often determined by how his skill set fits in with the other 23 players on his team. This is what often happens when you reduce a player or a team to numbers. You get Good numbers, but you also can get a losing team = square pegs and role holes.

what? I think you are greatly overvaluing Nunez…..he’s a throw in…..they have Ryan anyway.

  111. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 10:06 am

Anyone see Adonis Garica yesterday? I saw he got a hit and reached on an error. Hot the ball hard both times I heard.

“I’m convinced Mike Trout would still be in AA if he was drafted by the Yankees.”

If Mike Trout had been drafted by the Yankees he’d still be Mike Trout today….best player in the world and they wouldn’t have had to sign Ellsbury and could have kept Cano…….you couldn’t mess that kid up if you tried.

  113. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 10:06 am

    Braeburn-

The Yankees prefer the proven to the unproven. Not going to change IMO.

I think Ellsbury was an overpay but if he stays healthy and performs to specs he’ll be worth it.

He has a chance to be Damon version 2. Maybe better.

My perspective is you blend things.

A mix of veterans and youth. Creates stability.

We have rebuilt our Rotation and next we have to concentrate on giving them a worthy IF.

Almost the entire IF has to be rebuilt now.

    That is now job #1.

The Yankees chief weapon will always be their moolah.

I’d like to see another SP, and an OF’er come out of our MiLB’s over the next season or two.

We should trade for young IF’er’s with any surpluses we have.

    :)

  114. Hankflorida February 28th, 2014 at 10:07 am

McCaan fits the mold of the Yankee championship teams following in the steps of Dickey, Berra and Posada as a left handed hitting catchers with power. Any trades for Cervelli, Romaine, Ryan or Sanchez, all right handed bats, in order to bring us players that fit our specifications at other positions would be welcome.

numbers or eyeballs or by whatever measure you want……Nunez isn’t very good and the whole reason they brought in like 100 guys is because they have little or no faith left in him.

    Agreed.

…even if they want Cervelli for Didi…I’d want something else back, too !

    Romine 1 for 1 — fine.

  117. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 10:11 am

I believe a lot of the value in getting Ellsbury was also the subtracting of him from the R/Sox lineup. Luccino obviously has already realized this.

  118. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 10:11 am

Yankees need to have their 3 cylinder engine working:

    1) Strategic acquisitions of FA’s and IFA’s- Use of money

    2) Farm development- For supplementation and trading

    3) Trades of surplus Farm and ML assets for things you lack

That should be how a well-oiled machine should work IMO.

This year I will be excited to watch Tanaka. He will be this year’s Pontiac for me.

I expect new models to show up on the show room floor next year.

    We build excitement.

    :)

  119. Cashmoney February 28th, 2014 at 10:11 am

Hank, if by mold you meant having bunch of good hitters i certainly agree. But the truth likely is that there is no particular mold. Yankees won with Girardi as their catcher as well.

  120. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 10:13 am

As to the perceived value of Nunez, I point to the title of this Thread. The Yanks know his value to THIS team.

    mtu-

ellsbury in center means no one of substance at second or third because of finances . if the yankees had a young second basemen or third baseman ellsbury would make more sense.

why not have almonte in center and have cano at second base instead of ellsbury in center and a dumpster dive at second base?

these are the kinds of questions the yankees have to answer is they are going to make the kind of trades you are talking about with their excess farmhands.

  122. Cashmoney February 28th, 2014 at 10:15 am

I am a fan of Nunez. I think his best position is 2b.

  123. jfrag February 28th, 2014 at 10:15 am

J R Murphy , Nunez , and nuno to the snakes for owings and putz. And away we go

  124. Tackelberry February 28th, 2014 at 10:17 am

Abe Almonte never put up eye popping numbers when he was in the system. WHy the furor over trading him? Never any idication he would be more than a 4th or 5th outfielder. Zoilo was the better Almonte. I’m hoping Yanks can somehow trade Ichiro and open up a spot for Zoilo.

  125. DONNYBROOK February 28th, 2014 at 10:19 am

Well, Montero took a dive, so the prospect huggers have moved to Almonte.

  126. MTU February 28th, 2014 at 10:19 am

    Braeburn-

They certainly need to improve on their self-evals and development. They must.

I am going to be looking forward to our stud pitching staff and improved O for this year.

    Next year more improvement.

    Evolution not revolution.

    Evolution takes time.

We leave revolution for our friends in Chavezland.
