Spring Game 5: Yankees at Blue Jays

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 02, 2014 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

YANKEES (2-2)
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Carlos Beltran DH
Adonis Garcia RF
Austin Romine C
Brendan Ryan 2B
Russ Canzler 1B
Dean Anna 3B
Ramon Flores LF

LHP Vidal Nuno (2-1, 2.25 ERA in 2013)

BLUE JAYS (3-1)
Jose Reyes SS
Moises Sierra DH
Jose Bautista RF
Edwin Encarnacion 1B
Brett Lawrie 3B
Melky Cabrera LF
Dioner Navarro C
Anthony Gose CF
Ryan Goins 2B

RHP Esmil Rogers (5-9, 4.77 in 2013)

TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, not on TV or radio

WEATHER: Another beautiful blue sky. Very nice day down here in Florida.

UMPIRES: HP Toby Basner, 1B Marty Foster, 2B Phil Cuzzi, 3B Dan Iassogna

WHAT TO WATCH: Another chance to see new guys Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran. Also a chance to see Eduardo Nunez at shortstop and Brendan Ryan at second. It seems unlikely that either of them will spend much time at those positions this year — wouldn’t Ryan play short and Nunez second if they did have to fill those spots? — but the Yankees want to make sure they have that versatility and flexibility. Not a lot of high-profile guys playing today.

OFF THE BENCH: C Gary Sanchez, 1B Francisco Arcia, 2B Corban Joseph, SS Yangervis Solarte, 3B Jose Pirela, LF Zelous Wheeler, CF Antoan Richardson, RF Addison Maruszak

OUT OF THE BULLPEN: Bryan Mitchell, Shane Greene, Bruce Billings, Fred Lewis and Matt Daley

UPDATE, 1:19 p.m.: Jose Bautista just took Nuno deep to left field.

UPDATE, 1:48 p.m.: Dean Anna had an RBI single earlier, now Eduardo Nunez has gone deep with a two-run homer for a 3-1 Yankees lead in the third inning.

UPDATE, 1:52 p.m.: And Beltran has his first hit of the spring, and it’s a solo homer.

UPDATE, 2:22 p.m.: Just got back from the clubhouse for a mid-game talk with Vidal Nuno. He said he was happy with his command today, but he leaned on the fastball a little too much. Missed up with a cutter, and that’s what Bautista hit out.

    · With Tanaka starting the big league game on Thursday, CC Sabathia will pitch a simulated game that day.

Aha! They are trying to hide CC’s velocity! ;)

  2. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 1:13 pm

Is CC still on the team? I assumed that Cashman read LoHud and would have released him yesterday.

bigdan, it isn’t cherry picking when a player is coming off shoulder surgery. As he got into his zone he was close to a 800 OPS, and do not forget he is a CF who gives you plus plus D; he doesn’t need to produce corner pop numbers. As for Trenton, he is just getting his feet wet. And as for the Trenton park; yes, it is a tough park but it isn’t like it will suppress Mason’s stats the way it would/will Austin’s because while Mason has some pop, Arm and Hammer will more suppress homeruns. Mason hits to all fields and can turn those gappers into doubles and triples. He is a burner. So, I expect him to succeed. Cashmoney, Mason has very good bat speed

    —-

Your expectations regarding Mason certainly exceed mine feminista and I certainly hope you are right. The Yanks are in dire need of position player breakouts.

It’s always hard to evaluate the Yankee minor league hitters because they all seem to play in pitcher’s leagues and in difficult hitting ball parks. I believe the FSL is the toughest hitter’s league in the minors outside short season and I don’t think the Eastern League is much easier. The Trenton park kills power. That’s why I always expect a bit of a bump when they get to the International League. Perhaps Slade will show some better numbers this season.

How am I doing? I was outside avec la gold ’91 Prelude. Beautiful car! Wouldn’t trade her for all the Ferraris in the world.

Nice throw by Romine to nail Jose Reyes trying to steal.

There was a nice discussion on this issue, without any rancor I might add.

But you are back to your usual trolling ways I see. I did notice you have hoodwinked a couple of people…..good for you. I’m guessing it won’t take long for them to see through your facade. And don’t worry I will be there to point every transgression that I see.

Cue the multiple to attack me so you can act innocent.

  8. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Welcome to the Nuno and Nunez show!

  9. jmills March 2nd, 2014 at 1:23 pm

  10. jmills March 2nd, 2014 at 1:25 pm

Tar, don’t waste your energy, there are so many that know you are beyond quality. Alex Lifeson says hi btw :D

  11. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 1:28 pm

With Cervelli back I think this us a really big camp for Romine. I’d love to see him perform well if for no other reason then to provide another viable trade chip.

  12. rl1856 March 2nd, 2014 at 1:28 pm

Per fangraphs, CC began last season at 88-89, before slowly rising to abt 92 by the end of the season. He maintained abt a 10mph differential between FB and Slider. He also trew more curves last year than in years past. The FB velo rise is consistent with his history- he gets stronger during the season. I do not know where he was in ST last year. But it appears that in his first ST game this year, he is already where he was in April of last year. I agree that a consistent 94+ is probably a dream at this point, but it would not surprise me if he starts April at 91-92 and slowly rises to 92-94 by the end of the season. Low 90′s and improved control will go a long way towards putting last year behind him. My prediction is abt 200ip, 17-19w, 3.5ish ERA.

  13. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 1:33 pm

Diminished velocity just makes the need to command your pitches more important, especially your fastball. If CC can do that, hit the black, he’ll do well I think. If he makes mistakes over the plate whether 88 or 91 he’ll get hurt.

  14. Jerkface March 2nd, 2014 at 1:33 pm

But it appears that in his first ST game this year, he is already where he was in April of last year.

He said thats how he felt, but his velocity is actually far behind where he was at the end of last year. Which is why that quote was concerning.

Anna making an effort to stick. It’s early but I like what I see so far.

  17. blake March 2nd, 2014 at 1:39 pm

I had no idea who Dean Anna even was until a few weeks ago but he’s got a little bit of game ….could be a decent utility guy

Agree re: Dean Anna. His swing looks great. Hit two balls hard, including the RBI.

  20. bigdan22 March 2nd, 2014 at 1:42 pm

My reading of fangraphs shows that CC average FB velocity was right around 90 last April. Which means he must have been maxing out above 90. Yesterday he was 86-88. That’s a significant difference.

Peralta has confirmed Cashman made him a three year offer to play third. Cashman has never ignored the infield, I think he’s all over every possibility and is determined to make good decisions and not to be reactionary.

  23. Jerkface March 2nd, 2014 at 1:45 pm

Its not about Cashman ignoring the infield, its about HAL not wanting to pay for it. They’ve cut payroll already by 30 million this season.

I guess spending almost a half a billion isn’t good enough for some. I’d say adding McCann, Beltrans, Ellsbury and Tanaka while reducing this seasons payroll is the mark of a superb businessperson who is also committed to winning.

  33. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 1:54 pm

  34. Jerkface March 2nd, 2014 at 1:55 pm

Making a three-year offer to Peralta kind of pokes a hole in that theory doesn’t it?

No, it doesn’t. They made offers to tons of guys but took them off the table when certain guys signed. The entire front office has said there will be no more major additions.

Actually spending 30 more million would poke holes in the theory, but they haven’t. There is even an infielder available on the FA market whom they made an offer to earlier this season!

  36. cofuzz March 2nd, 2014 at 1:58 pm

It’s obviously just spring training, but that play Anna made from the 5-6 hole as a shortstop, and the way he’s handled the bat (against major leaguers) makes me think we have a legitimate utility option.

  37. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 2:00 pm

Perakta didn’t say that Cashman took the three-year offer off the table. He signed for four years with the Cardinals. And let’s remember that most of that $30 million in payroll reduction was due to A-Rod receiving the full 162 game suspension which was not known until January 13th.

  38. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2014 at 2:01 pm

Anna remind me of Andy Stankie with maybe a better eye. I saw him making an impressive play going to his right yesterday, I think he has okay range and a decent arm. An discernible eyes and a line drive single bat.

  39. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 2:02 pm

The Yankees signed almost all of the primetime free agents that were available this off-season. To criticize Hal for saying they’re not going after anymore big names doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to me.

  40. braeburn March 2nd, 2014 at 2:05 pm

…that’s one ugly blue jays hat with that red leaf on the blue .

  41. Jerkface March 2nd, 2014 at 2:06 pm

Perakta didn’t say that Cashman took the three-year offer off the table

He also signed on nov 25, what I’m saying is the Yankees making an offer to a player does not mean the pocketbook was open. The Yankees strategy this offseason was to make offers to multiple guys and see who was willing to accept. They had to sign a ton of guys because they had a ton of holes! So many players came off the books that they had no choice but to sign lots of guys. The team would have no one on it if they didn’t.

Yet they didn’t come close to fixing all the holes and they’ve also reduced payroll.

  42. Jerkface March 2nd, 2014 at 2:07 pm

To criticize Hal for saying they’re not going after anymore big names doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Significant addition isnt the same as big name. Stephen Drew isn’t a big name. They have room for 3 more significant additions if they wanted but they are relying on the likes of Eduardo Nunez and some NRIs.

  43. braeburn March 2nd, 2014 at 2:09 pm

“Actually spending 30 more million would poke holes in the theory, but they haven’t. ”

yup, add a contract to cano and the yankees would have a complete team.

i think what they’ve done is add enough to confuse the issue , as in smoke and mirrors, and not really put together a complete team.

i do like the tanaka signing though, a lot.

  44. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2014 at 2:11 pm

His prime time understands and pardons the none believers.

  45. Jerkface March 2nd, 2014 at 2:11 pm

“Yankees fail to sign all-star Jhonny Peralta” isn’t really a headline that supports the front office. The Orioles would be the best front office in baseball if attempting to sign players counted.

—–They certainly would love to get it off the back pages wouldn’t they. Hmmm.

Bigdan, there is no question that the Yankees have to cut the bad publicity of CC’s diminished velocity as not to play havoc with his mind. Most of the successful lefthanders in pinstripes were not the Ron Guidry types but more the Whitey Ford crafty types. In the same vein, most of the successful right handed Yankee pitchers were not the Allie Reynolds blazing fast ball types but more the sinker ball pitchers. In the 1940′s, Cleveland had Bob Feller and a few pitchers with high hard ones with a fairly good hitting team and played in a stadium where the fences were way back, and the crafty Yankee sinker ball pitchers playing with that short right field porch still ended
up with the rings. If we leave him alone, CC will be just fine changing speeds.

His change up got hammered last year, maybe due to the lack of disparity between it and his FB.

What I don’t countenance is passing judgment on Hal and Cashman’s efforts to improve the infield back in January; continuing up through today. It seems premature, knee-jerk and reactionary that seems want to call it a fait accompli that the Yankees have the worst infield imaginable this early. What’s wrong with seeing how those in camp perform, while you still continue to communicate with other GM’s like Towers to see if a deal makes sense. I’m not saying it will happen, but what if someone like Anna steps up and shows a .265/.325 capability while playing well defensively at third and short? I don’t think Drew is without blemishes, age, injuries downward projections and maybe the Yankees baseball people are just not high enough on him to feel he justifies his price tag.

  59. mick March 2nd, 2014 at 2:48 pm

    Whose job is Anna taking?
    Not Ryan’s. Nunez, he’s the 3B platoon.
No doubt he looks like the new Nix, who can hit a bit…

  60. tomingeorgia March 2nd, 2014 at 2:48 pm

Not this time. The best I’ve found around here commercially is “Carolina Gold Classic”, from Lexington, SC. And when I say “low and slow’, I mean it. This way, I don’t have to wrap them up for the last hour. Au naturel, right out of the box.

  78. tomingeorgia March 2nd, 2014 at 3:09 pm

    mick,
He’s old, heals slowly, and has done enough training to maintain his skills for any four men. I don’t think he’ll miss that part of it. The games? Sure.

  79. tucker March 2nd, 2014 at 3:11 pm

All we really know about Jeter is how he plays baseball. He seems to be a guy who is fully absorbed in the moment. He does not seem to worry about his past failures. He does not look ahead. He handles the task at hand.

He has more money than he can spend, more respect than any modern day player and more success. He does not want to reveal to the public a significantly diminished version of himself.

So I expect he’ll have a nice year, hit .280 to .300, play short most of the hear and be a key contributor to the team’s playoff run. And if the Yanks have enough, he’ll perform at his level in the postseason.

Then he’ll walk away. No regrets, on to his next phase of his life. He may feel a tug next spring, but he’ll be in the moment for whatever he pursues next.

  80. tomingeorgia March 2nd, 2014 at 3:11 pm

Yangervis is something this spring. Isn’t his OPS around 2000?

  81. braeburn March 2nd, 2014 at 3:12 pm

cano has an awesome baseball attitude.

as yankee feminista says, he’s already having an impact on seattle hitters with his advice to other hitters.

cano is taking charge out there. the seattle camp is energized by his presence.

the yankee camp is so interesting today blake and tomingorgia are talking BBQ.

  88. braeburn March 2nd, 2014 at 3:22 pm

    “Maybe to you.
    Not to them.”

if hal has a problem with cano as a baseball player he needs to get his ass down on the field and pay attention.

yeah i know maybe some grass will get on his shoes and maybe a speck from the infield dirt will land on his coiffured hair, but the game is played on the field. anyone who think cano isn’t an elite player surely has never watched him up close.

  89. mick March 2nd, 2014 at 3:24 pm

if hal has a problem with cano as a baseball player he needs to get his ass down on the field and pay attention.
    =======================
my statement had nothing to do with his skills.
plenty have complained about his attitude.
    they called montero right.
i heard he gained 40 lbs, lol :)

  90. jmills March 2nd, 2014 at 3:25 pm

mick, there’s nothing like sitting around a dinner table and having the English call you, common.

mills , maybe you are sitting at the wrong table?

  92. jmills March 2nd, 2014 at 3:32 pm

mick, thanks, I don’t go to those tables anymore. Granted, we could do better here, but cripes, Canada had the largest per capita involvement in the 2nd world war. Still, I get my fair share of Parisians looking at me as a retarded soul. Maybe I am retarded, but don’t state the obvious!

  93. braeburn March 2nd, 2014 at 3:34 pm

“my statement had nothing to do with his skills.
plenty have complained about his attitude”

well the numbers don’t support them.
cano is a beter baseball player than any player the yankees have.

“What the data doesn’t support, though, is the popular perception of how much this matters. The stats suggest that Cano has cost himself a trip to first every 39 games, or about four times per season. Jeter has given himself a hustle single once every 26 games, or about 6.3 times per season. Either way, we’re talking about three or four runs a year, a relatively modest total for two players who’ve repeatedly topped 30 runs above average on offense.”

mills…you have a major french population up there?

  95. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 3:36 pm

I think Yankee Stadium fans will act as the Cano jury. There have been other Yankees who left here to go elsewhere and they were cheered upon their return to the Bronx. I am not sure but I suspect the boos will be loud.

  96. jmills March 2nd, 2014 at 3:37 pm

    mick, I love the French, I love…Juliette Binoche!!! :D

again randy you are confusing the issue.

skill and attitude are different things.
anyway, he wasn’t coming back here…that was his choice.
maybe he didn’t like their attitude.
    that is possible, right? :)

Cano is an elite player, no doubt. He’s special, no doubt. I wish he were here, no doubt. He demanded 10 years, no doubt. He’s gone, no doubt. For what he’s getting from the M’s, I hope he’s a positive influence there, but there’s doubt.

If we leave him alone, CC will be just fine changing speeds.
His change up got hammered last year, maybe due to the lack of disparity between it and his FB.

You are right as CC going from being Ron Guidry to Whitey Ford is a slow process. Some pitchers never make the adjustment, but CC could always spot his pitches. I hope that he does a little better then Al Leiter who once he lost his fastball took the cat and mouse game with the batters to another level that was not fan friendly.

They have one real strength in the farm: catching. Add McCann to the equation and it just makes sense to look into what they can get for him or Sanchez. If it’s a legitimate return (for example, a young ML ready middle infielder), I’m not sure how they can turn away from the offer.

    __________

I don’t think it is weird. Cano turned down $175 million dollars and left the Yankees for more money, he disparaged Joe Girardi and astoundingly insinuated the Yankees didn’t show him any respect, he didn’t hustle, he had dubious associations with A-Rod and Melky. He was all about Cano.

Compare that to two Red Sox, Pedroia and Lester, both stars who have publicly said they will take less money to stay with the Red Sox. Those are the type of players that fans love and don’t boo.

Yankee management handled it just fine. They were prepared to pay him $175 million dollars.

    Pretty much

    Blojaldo,

Not after offering Ellbury 21.8 mil per season… After that, it was almost an insult… What we don’t know is if the offer to Ells was made after they thought Cano wasn’t staying… Not to mention the smear campaign during most of last season by YES broadcasting…And Cashman’s “money” comment…I am sure they didn’t sit well on Cano… Again, maybe he was going anyway…But the way they handled the negotiations was very clumsy… You need to make the player feel wanted..I don’t they did, so maybe he moved on

There is glory in becoming a Yankee, but disbelief when you’d decide to leave, unless of course it’s someone like Joba or Hughes. To a lesser extent it was like that when Andy left, but it was more understood because he wanted to go to be near his family and play for his hometown team. With Cano it’s different because he left to go to a worse team in an area in the land that time forgot….just south of me ;)

  169. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 4:44 pm

There was no smear campaign by the YES network, I watched every game and have no idea what that refers to. I think the Yankees knew that Cano was not going to come down from $300 million to $175 million so signing Ellsbury made good sense. And I also believe that there are other factors that we don’t know about, pure conjecture on my part I admit, but that’s what I believe. I do not think the Yankees wanted Cano at that price and certainly agree that to give a 30 year old a ten year deal, again, would have been insane.

I don’t think the Yankees really believed anyone was going to go to ten years and when it got down to it they’d get him at the level they wanted it to be. When Seattle came up with that offer, they decided they weren’t going to go ten years, especially with the fiasco of having to go through dealing with Arod at the time.

  176. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 4:50 pm

Making a mistake is fine, repeating it is not. I applaud the Yankees for setting a limit and sticking to it. They learned from that abominable $275 million ten year contract to a 31 year old A-Rod. And, those bad deals given to Pujols, Hamilton, Fielder, Gonzalez and Crawford as well.

What!!!!!!! That’s something you say about your wife after she cheats on you.

That’s called the truth and a broadcaster doing his job.

    ——————

Why is it he rarely do it before? Or not at all? Why wait until his last season. I can’t take Kay seriously for the simple fact he’s a shill.

says basically that cano cost the yankees only 4 bases a year for not always running hard to first.

  185. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 4:58 pm

I remember Singleton also commenting about Cano; great player but he doesn’t run out balls. I recall a specific instance where Cano jacked one in the gap and he halfheartedly trotted down to first looking at the ball. When it fell in the gap one hop to the wall he took off and slid in to second just beating the throw. If he had run hard from the get go, he could have possibly had a triple. I think it was Singleton or maybe all the YES on air broadcasters at that time addressing it. The had to how could you not?

  186. Jerkface March 2nd, 2014 at 4:59 pm

Yea, its probably true. The not running thing is always exaggerated.

I differ on your opinion… If you watch his at bats..When he didn’t hit it well he usually got mad at himself..It is only for a spllt second, but it is there in every at bat that he fails to hit it well…Also he is not very fast out of the box..So what you guys see as none hustling, for me has more to do with disapointment and lack of speed, than not caring, which in the end lies the none hustling issue.. But as I said, it is my opinion…You are free to think any way you like…

just curious, does it bother anyone when most hitters jog into second base on routine doubles ?

i’m sure every now and then a ball is going to be bobbled and if a runner ran hard all the way would be in position to get to third.

but you rarely see it. double standard ? literally :)

  190. luis March 2nd, 2014 at 5:05 pm

Good links guys ( JF and Braeburn )… Prince Fielder?… He plays a much less demanding position, that says a lot about Cano…

    Later hopefully

Yes this is the big issue with things like this. There is alot of selection bias when it comes to non-hustling commentary in baseball. And its always subjective where the commentator doesn’t really know the effort level of the player at the time.

  195. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 5:13 pm

Cano’s lack of hustle is not really debatable as it was a known fact for a long time.

“We all talked to him,” Long said. “I’m pretty sure Jeter talked to him a number of times. Even if you run at 80%, no one’s going to say anything. But when you jog down the line, even if it doesn’t come into play 98% of the time, it creates a perception.

“But he just wouldn’t make that choice to run hard all the time. The reasons aren’t going to make sense. He might say his legs didn’t feel good, or he was playing every day and needed to save his energy. To me there was no acceptable answer.”

“It has become insufferable to first watch Brett Gardner, then 39-year-old Ichiro Suzuki busting it to reach first base, followed by watching Robinson Cano regularly surrender himself at home plate” – Phil Mushnick NY Post

  196. Tar March 2nd, 2014 at 5:14 pm

Yeah everyone is a slacker that jogs to first……….on a BB. I mean the catcher could miss it, he could make an errant throw back to the pitcher…. so many things “could” happen.

    #PeteRose

  197. Blojaldo March 2nd, 2014 at 5:17 pm

Everyone is not Cano. Cano was asking for a lifetime deal, a ten year contract. It was more than fair and smart for the Yankees to take his lack of hustle and all factors into account when considering what kind of agreement they would be amenable to. If he didn’t run balls out in his walk year, what could one reasonably expect three to four years down the road with a guaranteed contract?

  198. jmills March 2nd, 2014 at 5:19 pm

I’m worried about my rotation. Everything seems to hinge upon, Morrow. I sure am pulling for him.

“How MLB Announcers Favor American Players Over Foreign Ones”

“Whereas the most praised Top-10 was more similar to MLB’s demographics (62 percent white, 27 percent Latino, 9 percent Black, 2 percent Asian)—and perhaps even over-represented black players, the Top-10 criticized list is Latino-heavy. Only Brandon Belt and Mat Latos are white. Pablo Sandoval, the Giants’ All-Star third baseman, has battled a weight problem throughout his young career—a problem that his nickname, “Kung-Fu Panda” emphasizes. The only black player, Upton, was nearly moved at July’s trading deadline due to conflicts with senior management.”

I think terms like “hate” and “bad guy” are hyperbole and I wouldn’t use them. I don’t think either fit, but personally in the end I didn’t find Cano very likable or someone to admire or revere. That’s all.

“No to some that makes you a bigot.”

Posting that Cano has Character issues and is lazy, as BJ-WCYF did the other day, can be construed as bigotry. Especially when it comes from someone with a well deserved reputation for being a bully towards women…. amongst other nefarious things .

  203. jmills March 2nd, 2014 at 5:33 pm

Tar, I wish I had Cano here. Was in attendace when he blasted a couple here back in ’05 or so. Dustin McGowan came in relief on that Friday eve and allowed the Jays to creep back in. 11-10 win for the Yanks as Mo only gave up a single to Greg Zaun. I was standing behind home plate. I look forward to cheering Jeter on…of course!!!

  233. seo plugin August 11th, 2014 at 12:07 am

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
