Hernan Perez SS

Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 3.60)

TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, YES Network and MLB Network (rain delayed to 1:30)

WEATHER: Tarp was on the field this morning. Still cloudy.

UMPIRES: HP Mark Wegner, 1B Tom Haillon, 2B Dan Iassogna, 3B Sean Barber

WHAT TO WATCH: Another game with Derek Jeter at shortstop. Another look at Kelly Johnson getting reps at third base. Another start for center field prospect Mason Williams. There’s nothing particularly out-of-the-ordinary about today’s game, but it will be the first look at Jose Campos, the fourth player involved in the 2012 Pineda/ Montero trade. Campos has moved fairly slowly after dealing with an elbow issue in his first year with the Yankees. His innings were limited last season, and he’s been a few steps behind everyone else this spring. Says he feels healthy, though.

OFF THE BENCH: C Austin Romine, 1B Jose Gil, 2B Zelous Wheeler, SS Dean Anna, 3B Jose Pirela, LF Yangervis Solarte, CF Antoan Richardson, RF Adonis Garcia, DH John Ryan Murphy

OUT OF THE PEN: Shawn Kelley, Jose Campos, Robert Coello, Yoshinori Tateyama, Fred Lewis

UPDATE, 1:39 p.m.: Four singles and two runs so far in the first inning. Kuroda wasn’t helped by a Kelly Johnson error at third. Carlos Beltran had made a solid throw from right field, but Johnson let it get by for a run-scoring, runner-advancing error. Still, most of the problem has been Kuroda being knocked around a little bit. Right now there are two outs and two on.

UPDATE, 1:49 p.m.: Final tally is four runs on six hits including a double. Kuroda only got out of the first when Mason Williams made a good throw for an out at the plate (with a fine diving tag by Francisco Cervelli). Easily Kuroda’s worst outing of the spring.

UPDATE, 2:30 p.m.: Internet situation. Not great. Anyway, Kuroda is finished with two outs in the top of the fourth. He allowed two more runs in the third and has left a runner at second base for Chase Whitley, who’s in to finish off this inning against Victor Martinez. Kuroda had been excellent this spring, but today was a pretty bad one (six runs on 10 hits). Francisco Cervelli has homered, so it’s a 6-1 Tigers lead.

UPDATE, 2:54 p.m.: Cervelli with his second homer of the game. He’s been terrific this spring.

UPDATE, 3:06 p.m.: According to the broadcast, Campos just dialed it up to 93 mph for a strikeout in the sixth inning. He’s been at 90-91 the rest of the time.

UPDATE, 3:07 p.m.: OK, well, then Campos threw three straight fastballs at 93 mph to the next hitter, ending with a fly ball to center. After a leadoff double, Campos got a routine grounder, a strikeout, and a weak fly ball to center. Fastball up to 93 at the end. Curveball seemed a bit inconsistent. The double was off a curveball, but he did throw one for a called strike.

this NYY infield is going to be a disaster as it is right now

  3. kd March 12th, 2014 at 1:24 pm

is campos heading back to high a or double a?

  4. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

Campos hasn’t been to High A. He was at Charleston. Figure he’ll start at Tampa.

  5. austinmac March 12th, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Some pundits have suggested Mason is being showcased.

I’m told that NYG & Jon Beason are “close” to agreement but nothing final yet. It’s a battle — Beason has options — but NYG are favorites.

Thanks for the good news Kim!

  7. bbb51 March 12th, 2014 at 1:35 pm

They need minor league outfielders in camp, Heathcott is not ready to play, Austin hurt his wrist again, so that may be the only reason we are seeing a lot of Mason.

  8. kd March 12th, 2014 at 1:35 pm

    thanks yf

  9. tomingeorgia March 12th, 2014 at 1:41 pm

    They’re hitting ropes off Hiroki.

  10. bbb51 March 12th, 2014 at 1:43 pm

    Lots of pitches up.

“Some pundits have suggested Mason is being showcased.”

he sure has played a good bit……

  12. blake March 12th, 2014 at 1:47 pm

I’m really not worried about Kuroda other than they have to figure out a way to keep him fresh in the 2nd half…..he’ll figure out how to get outs.

  13. pkyankfan69 March 12th, 2014 at 1:49 pm

Beason back with the Giants… It’s a done deal…Sweet, they really need him.

Not really worried about Hiroki getting hit around, he’ll be fine when the regular season starts… Yanks just have to work on better limiting this innings this year… They should have the starter depth to give Kuroda a nice 2 week phantom DL trip vacation in the middle of the year to help keep him fresh.

  16. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 1:53 pm

Blake, not worried either; Kuroda’s just getting his work in. If I heard correctly, it sounds like they’re going to give Kuroda 10 days off around the ASB. That should help.

Kids often get reps in ST. Don’t know that Mason’s presence in games means much.

I wish MLB net would give NY area an alternate game when they’re showing Yanks.

    You’re welcome, kd.

  17. Mottsx March 12th, 2014 at 1:57 pm

Too Bad Yankees didnt pick up Pedro Ciriaco on waivers last year.. He can play all around the infield… He used to kill the yankees. Or did he JUST kill the Yankees?

  18. blake March 12th, 2014 at 2:00 pm

“Or did he JUST kill the Yankees?”

he JUST killed the Yankees….he’s terrible

  19. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 2:02 pm

I will say though that Kuroda’s first inning is usually a feeling out period to see which pitches are working. I’d bet it is his worst inning BAA-wise.

  20. blake March 12th, 2014 at 2:04 pm

Kuroda is probably just working on stuff……I really don’t worry about him. He has a kitchen sink of junk to throw up there and when the games matter he’ll be fine

  21. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 12th, 2014 at 2:04 pm

I don’t want to be a potential wet blanket, and I love the kid to death, but I have to say that I’m so damned happy that McCann is going to be the primary catcher. It could be total coincidence that the pitchers are having bad outings with Cervelli behind the dish. (Or it could be that I don’t remember each and every outing and when things go south quickly, I check to see who is catching and those times – few though they might be – it’s been the Cisco kid.)

JMO and just callin’ ‘em likes I sees them. Understand if others don’t see it that way.

  22. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 12th, 2014 at 2:04 pm

I’m not worried about Kuroda either.

  23. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 2:07 pm

blake, agree, I don’t worry about him AT ALL. But looked it up, first inning: 348/.384/.538/.921 148 OPS+, 5.19 ERA. But innings thereafter, golden…

  24. Jerkface March 12th, 2014 at 2:10 pm

The last time Cervelli played regularly (2011) , he had the lowest ‘catchers ERA’ on the team. In fact, he always has as good or better catcher ERA than the primary catcher on the team when he plays it seems. Last year he had the best other than JR Murphy. But I don’t think thats really how you evaluate a catcher.

I think Cervelli is fine as a catcher, he is a good backup.

  25. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 2:14 pm

    Perfect throw.

  26. Jerkface March 12th, 2014 at 2:18 pm

Of course I’d rather have McCann than Cervelli though. McCann seems like the real deal and I’ve always like him on the braves.

  27. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 2:18 pm

    Atta boy, Cervy.

  28. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 2:19 pm

    JF, um, yeah.

  29. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 2:20 pm

Mason loafing down the line. 1B could have dropped it or somethin’. SMH.

  30. Ys Guy March 12th, 2014 at 2:21 pm

The only things that bother me about ST starts are:

    Lack of velociy
    Arm pain
Inability to get the ball down (over several starts)

other than that, with a proven ML pitcher i dont care about results.

  31. mick March 12th, 2014 at 2:21 pm

does it matter if cervelli is still juicing?
it should. besides from being injury prone and having no options if he gets caught he’s done for the season.
    he is being showcased.
it is romines turn to backup.

  32. Mottsx March 12th, 2014 at 2:21 pm

Im sure Cashman will find a 3B/1B right handed platoon in the next 2 weeks as players will begin to be cut.

  33. mick March 12th, 2014 at 2:22 pm

Mason loafing down the line. 1B could have dropped it or somethin’.
    ================================
now if that was said about cano…

  34. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 12th, 2014 at 2:23 pm

Well we know Cervelli lost a bit of playing time last season, so maybe it’s just a matter of his getting himself back in synch aslo.

Thanks for the reminder Jerkface. When Cervelli was playing as our primary catcher, he was great.

  35. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 12th, 2014 at 2:25 pm

mick, I thought I heard the other night that he was being scouted.

  36. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 12th, 2014 at 2:29 pm

And then again, when Anibal is on, he’s very very good.

  37. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 12th, 2014 at 2:29 pm

Guess I’ll take this to the car.

    Excited to see Pineda tomorrow.

  38. blake March 12th, 2014 at 2:32 pm

I think Cervelli is fine as a catcher, he is a good backup.”

agreed…. but if somebody else wants him enough then I comfortable with the other 2 BU options they have. Other teams might value Cervy more than we think though…..it’s possible.

  39. cogen777 March 12th, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Mason loafing down the line. 1B could have dropped it or somethin’. SMH.

When a player has yet to prove himself not a good thing to do.

  40. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 2:54 pm

I should have added the  to my above Mason post. He is pretty much a hustler, so…

I think other teams value Cervelli. He does have his positives. Arm has been pretty good aside from the one year outlier (2011?). Hits decently for a C (good RISP and clutch #) and is reputed to be a good pitch framer. He’s only 28; if he can stay healthy, he certainly has some value if even as a good BUC.

And he hits another one out…

  41. blake March 12th, 2014 at 2:55 pm

Retweet from earlier: Bonds’ 2000 Coors Field-adjusted career stats: pic.twitter.com/fupox80kTm

this is crazy….if Bonds had played in Coors Field in 2001 he would have had 93 homers and a 1.588 OPS

  42. YankeeNiner March 12th, 2014 at 2:55 pm

The Yankees should have enough offense that they can package Cervelli and Ichiro and eat some of Ichiro’s salary to get a defensive wizard. The infield is so weak on the left side that Ryan will replace Jeter in the 7th or earlier and Johnson is a weaker link at 3B. Go get a Nick Punto type. Now.

  43. Mottsx March 12th, 2014 at 2:57 pm

Maybe its good Kelly Johnson keeps making errors and the yankees wake up and sign Blake’s boy Drew…. if he only hit right handed.

  44. YankeeNiner March 12th, 2014 at 2:59 pm

It is not fair to Kelly Johnson or the Yankees for him to play 3B. he should back-up Brian Roberts and “Tex” only. Put Nuneeeeeeee at 3B and stick with him. He’s talented and athletic. Or make a trade. I don’t want Drew.

  45. blake March 12th, 2014 at 3:02 pm

Kelly plus Jeter on the left side of the infield is really really bad defensively….like the worst in baseball bad. KJ was signed to be a utility guy…..not be the starting 3B.

  46. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 3:06 pm

  47. Jerkface March 12th, 2014 at 3:07 pm

True. Really like to see them cut bait with Suzuki so that Almonte could at least have a shot at extra OF spot. Right now the team is 5 deep in the OF. Shame to see Suzuki blocking someone.

  62. cogen777 March 12th, 2014 at 3:24 pm

yes…..that would have been fun. I bet Bonds could put up a .380 OBP right now

Which would be really low for him and respectable for quite a few major leaguers.

  63. blake March 12th, 2014 at 3:28 pm

“Which would be really low for him and respectable for quite a few major leaguers.”

only 17 players in all of MLB had a .380 or better OBP last year.

  64. Jerkface March 12th, 2014 at 3:33 pm

In this day and age .380 OBP is the new .400+ OBP.

  65. yankeefeminista March 12th, 2014 at 3:41 pm

Campos has a very nice arm. Threw an easy 93. Another pitcher if all goes well I hope we get in Trenton in second half. Curve and change looked pretty good too.

OT but I had to do this.

A friend of mine asked me to post this wherever I could, and so I am posting it here. I remembered reading about it. A woman was taking her children to buy a puppy and her car collided with a pickup truck, killing both children. She is in the hospital in serious condition.

They’re trying to raise funds for funeral expenses and medical expenses. If anyone is so inclined to donate, here is the link where you can do so.

God bless that woman and those children, and anyone who chooses to help out.

    He got injured.
    ========================
    remained a lamb.(a lame lamb ?)

Musty did not show again what he did last year in ST, and Solarate whose creditials were not anything to write home about may also go that route. There have been players who came on like a house on fire and then the pitchers found their Achilles Heel. The perfect example was the Tiger’s outfielder Dick Wakefield who was supposed to be the second coming of Ted Williams. I bet very few on this blog have ever heard of him!

  90. Mottsx March 12th, 2014 at 4:41 pm

Almonte would make $500k. Ichiro makes $6.5M. DFA him Ben Francisco style or hope for a claim and trade. Someone will claim him (Phillies). Otherwise release him and eat the $6.5 and pay Almonte’s $500k and eat the $6.5M thats hot dog money for the month of April.

  91. Jerkface March 12th, 2014 at 4:43 pm

If you DFA Ichiro you are still paying his salary. The only time you can have a player be claimed and have another team assume their salary is after the trade deadline when you put players on trade waivers.

  92. jmills March 12th, 2014 at 4:47 pm

No Santana? Give me that ball!, I’ll spit on it and cut it sideways. Ok Romero, we’ve got a new brain for you, from someone named Abi Normal. Now, go put on the Ritz, and try not to become unnerved if a few lights pop here and there. I drove home in white outs, how hard can 60’6″ be?

What I need is a temporary tom filer to go 7-0 and an 11-0 dennis lamp in relief. Easy.

  93. Hans Davenport March 12th, 2014 at 4:53 pm

If you DFA Ichiro you are still paying his salary. The only time you can have a player be claimed and have another team assume their salary is after the trade deadline when you put players on trade waivers.

Though it’s still horrible to have him in the way of any young player that has a chance of being productive. With Soriano in the mix he’s a 5th OF. I’d rather see Zorro get a real shot.

  94. champ809 March 12th, 2014 at 4:57 pm

It wouldn’t hurt Zoilo to spend the first couple of months down in Scranton playing RF with Slade in CF to give the Yanks depth.

Meanwhile he can get his confidence absolutely crushing AAA pitching and working on his D.

I think he knows he’s about mlb ready and has a major league career ahead of him.

Soriano is gone after this season…Beltran will be the primary DH over the next 2 year. There may be as many as 3 OF openings open over the next 2 years…

    1st OF- Ellsbury
    2nd OF- Gardy
    3rd OF- ?
    4th OF- ?

With Slade and Zoilo in AAA Scranton and Mason and Tyler Austin in AA Trenton the Yanks have good upside at the upper levels
