Yankees honoring Rivera (while Jeter jokes about Mo’s age)

Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera

Obviously I’m not in Panama for tonight’s exhibition game against the Marlins. I don’t believe the game is televised anywhere. Not even sure it’s on radio or broadcast online (if anyone knows any different, feel free to put it in the comments). Over on the right side of the blog’s main page is a Twitter feed full of Yankees writers who are covering the game in Panama City. That should be a pretty solid source of information. The game itself begins at 8:05 p.m. with Adam Warren getting the start for the Yankees. For now, here’s a very short little AP update from Panama, where Derek Jeter couldn’t resist the temptation to make an age joke about Mariano Rivera.

PANAMA CITY (AP) — New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter is praising Mariano Rivera for his stellar career and calling him old in pregame banter that drew laughter at a news conference in Panama City.

Jeter says he is happy the team is back in Panama for the first time since the 1940s when he says Rivera was a child.

Jeter made a crack about major league baseball coming to Panama “for the first time since 1946, back when Mo was a young child.”

The Yankees actually visited Panama in 1947, when they played against the then Brooklyn Dodgers. Rivera was born 22 years later.

Rivera says he will dedicate the exhibition games to the Panamanian people. Rivera spent his entire 19-year career in the major leagues the Yankees.

    Re-post

I haven’t seen a Solarte at bat in a few days now. I knew something was wrong with the universe.

Let’s talk about Solarte for a bit. I, like almost everyone else here, didn’t know who the hell this guy was until the Yanks signed him a few months ago. His past statistical performance is ok but not particularly noteworthy. Yet just the same, after watching Solarte this ST, color me impressed.

As to his defense, you can’t tell much about his range by just watching a few games on TV. But I can tell he has a shortstop’s arm. Nevertheless, it’s really his at bats that are the most impressive things about him. He just doesn’t set up, swing, or hit like a utility infielder. Anna looks like a utility infielder at the plate. A good one. Like Enrique Wilson or Luis Sojo. I saw a quote from Beltran the other day saying he was impressed with Solarte and that Solarte was a “real switch-hitter.” Pop from both sides of the plate. I’ve seen him turn on fastballs or hit them the other way this spring. I’ve seen him pull curve balls. He just looks hitterish.

Solarte has very little chance of getting any significant time at SS for the big club this season. The best thing for him then is to play SS every day in Scranton. There’s going to be quite a large opening at SS for the Yanks in 2015. I believe the Yanks are prepared to do something big to fill that hole next off season. But if Solarte has a strong year in Scranton, it would behoove the Yanks to direct their attention to their newly impressive AAA SS as a possible long term in house solution. Sounds far fetched? Hey we didn’t even know how to spell this guy’s name a few months ago. And maybe he really is from Hannibal Mo.

I can’t get too excited about Solarte. I have seen too many guys who had good spring trainings who amounted to nothing. Solarte played winterball and came in ahead of many players.

Now it may be he is a late bloomer and the Yankees found gold with him. I look forward to seeing what he does in Scranton. If he continues to hit well there that would be very good news and maybe he becomes Jeters replacement next year. Until then………….

    Thanks for the link tampayank!

  7. blake March 15th, 2014 at 8:17 pm

Reminds me of the time when some of “us” were hot and bothered to sign Carl Crawford in 2011 to sign left field despite having Brett Gardner and some of “us” were laughed at for questioning out loud if the upgrade justified the extreme difference in cost.”

I never wanted Crawford besides this really isn’t the same situation as that at all. Gardner was a cheap youn player who could approximate Crawfords production for a fraction of the cost…….the Yanks infield is a mess and they have nobody as good as Drew to play 3B or (2B or SS) if Jeter or Roberts go down…..plus Drew is probbaly gonna be a one year deal. It’s not at all similar

  8. blake March 15th, 2014 at 8:17 pm

I can’t believe this game isn’t on TV

  9. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 8:18 pm

Does anyone know whether YES will be covering this on their alternate channel?

I just tuned in to the link from tampayank and know that I really don’t want to watch this in Spanish. Worse comes to worse, I’ll just go mlb.com.

I’ve been out all day so if someone already provided this information, I apologize for asking again.

  10. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 8:19 pm

By the way, I am still heavy on Team Nuno. I hope the Yankees find some kind of prominent role for him this season. I truly believe he could break a starting rotation.

  11. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 8:27 pm

Just checked with DTV and there is no programming at all for tonight on the YES alternate stations.

What a bloody shame. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and no forgiving this. (Though do the Yankees still own YES? Something makes me think someone else took it over…)

  12. bayronf March 15th, 2014 at 8:28 pm

Yankee game is supposed to be on, gofirstrow.eu which is from an internet link called first row sports. I’m checking it out to see if it really comes on at 21:00 pm. I haven’t heard of any other site.

  13. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 8:35 pm

Are you telling me there was nothing the New York Yankees could have done to have this game televised?

  14. Tar March 15th, 2014 at 8:44 pm

“Are you telling me there was nothing the New York Yankees could have done to have this game televised?”

It’s a Spring Training game in Panama, I understand why it’s not televised. Now If Mo was going to play, that would be another story.

Really it’s a big deal for the people of Panama ( and Mo), for us it’s just another ST game.

Wait did the Earth just stop spinning….Trish is mad at, and I am I am defending the Yankee organization.

  15. jmills March 15th, 2014 at 8:44 pm

No matter how one cuts it, Jeter is premium!

  16. jmills March 15th, 2014 at 8:46 pm

Tar, I know its a court, not a field, I was just kidding you :)

  17. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 8:57 pm

Tar – it’s more than just an ST game in Panama. It’s a game being played in the country of the best closer in the history of the game, and that closer was ours. With all of the hype that led up to it in Panama, and their love of the NYY – and our love of Mariano – all stops should have been pulled to have this game televised. In honor of and as a honor to Mariano.

  18. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 9:01 pm

Meanwhile I tried to check out that link gofirstrow.eu, and it does advertise that the Yankee game is on. They even asked if I wanted it in English. But when I tried to do the download, it forced me into downloading a million things and suddenly Norton popped up telling me there was “suspicious activity” and it had to shut down and restart to get rid of the threat.

    GRRR!!!

When my computer started up again, it was running slow as molasses so I went to Programs and found that everything but the kitchen sink had been installed, so I am in the middle of uninstalling a zillion things! End result is that even if the game is on gofirstrow.eu, I won’t be watching it.

    :(

    Oh well.

  19. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 9:03 pm

Meanwhile, the Phils are handing it to the Sux. Something to be happy about I guess.

jmills, I don’t appreciate things that could have been done easily and weren’t. This is of import to Mariano, of course, because it’s in his home country. Stupid stupid stupid.

My computer is not allowing me to uninstall HD-Sport TV, so I did a Google search and found out how to uninstall it. I had to download SpyHunter, and sure enough I see Torn TV there as part of the “infections” that will be able to be removed. But it’s doing an entire system scan, and with 12% of the scan finished, it has already detected 6,438 threats!

I am going to sue the Yankee organization for pain and suffering and damages. But for their lack of televising this game, I wouldn’t be going through this!

One of the priests at my parish is from Colombia. He said that the way he learned to speak English, primarily, was to listen to US television.

I guess if you listen enough (and use a few other guides) you can learn another language.

This is the equivalent of what I’m hearing: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah Adam Warren blah blah blah blah blah blah los Marlins blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah en los Yankees.

    :)

I can’t be everywhere! I’m still trying to deal with computer “threats”!

You guys should know that you need to mention the no hitter before the end of the 5th.

Don’t you know nothing about baseball superstitions!

But I have to feel the baseball gods will smile down on their Panamanian son and make sure at least one hit dribbles through…

    :)

  62. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 11:14 pm

Looks like Coello is trying to add to his 30.37 ERA.

    Oy!

  63. pete2 March 15th, 2014 at 11:15 pm

Wonder if the Marlins would let Mo throw an inning for the Yankees this series? I guess Mo would not do it unless he has been throwing.

As for traditions, I only honor them when we are on the right side of the no hitter.

Now something has entered my mind.

  67. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 11:21 pm

“As for traditions, I only honor them when we are on the right side of the no hitter.”

And the way to be on the right side of a no hitter is to make sure you’re not no hit. And the way to make sure you’re not no hit is to jinx the competition if they are no hitting you by mentioning it before the end of the 5th inning.

I don’t make up the traditions. But I sure as hell honor them! Except this time I unfortunately was otherwise occupada.

    ;)

  68. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 15th, 2014 at 11:23 pm

This is a mini blood bath. Runs would be nice, even one not to be shut out. But I would settle for a few hits, just not to be no hit.

THE MARLINS ARE PITCHING A NO HITTER AND A SHUT OUT.

It may be too little too late, but I’m always willing to try.

  69. pete2 March 15th, 2014 at 11:28 pm
