Yankees honoring Rivera (while Jeter jokes about Mo’s age)

Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera

Obviously I’m not in Panama for tonight’s exhibition game against the Marlins. I don’t believe the game is televised anywhere. Not even sure it’s on radio or broadcast online (if anyone knows any different, feel free to put it in the comments). Over on the right side of the blog’s main page is a Twitter feed full of Yankees writers who are covering the game in Panama City. That should be a pretty solid source of information. The game itself begins at 8:05 p.m. with Adam Warren getting the start for the Yankees. For now, here’s a very short little AP update from Panama, where Derek Jeter couldn’t resist the temptation to make an age joke about Mariano Rivera.

PANAMA CITY (AP) — New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter is praising Mariano Rivera for his stellar career and calling him old in pregame banter that drew laughter at a news conference in Panama City.

Jeter says he is happy the team is back in Panama for the first time since the 1940s when he says Rivera was a child.

Jeter made a crack about major league baseball coming to Panama “for the first time since 1946, back when Mo was a young child.”

The Yankees actually visited Panama in 1947, when they played against the then Brooklyn Dodgers. Rivera was born 22 years later.

Rivera says he will dedicate the exhibition games to the Panamanian people. Rivera spent his entire 19-year career in the major leagues the Yankees.
