The Yankees just scratched Brendan Ryan from today’s lineup. Dean Anna will instead get the start at shortstop.
Ryan has continually downplayed the severity of his sore lower back, and today was supposed to be his first game since March 4. All spring, it has been a given that Ryan would break camp as basically the Yankees defensive specialist and backup shortstop. If this back injury becomes a problem, Anna could presumably jump into the mix.
UPDATE, 6:37 p.m.: Upper back spasms for Ryan. The Yankees say it’s unrelated to the oblique/lower back injury that had him sidelined previously.
