Ellsbury MRI comes back clean

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 20, 2014 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Victor Martinez, Jacoby Ellsbury

Jacoby Ellsbury was sent for an MRI today. Joe Girardi said the results came back negative, and Girardi remains confident Ellsbury will be available on Opening Day.

“When he came to the park, they sent him to get it,” Girardi said. “He could have taken BP today. I always say, if they don’t know how to hit BP yet, we’re in a lot of trouble. … My guess is he’ll try to take some BP tomorrow and then we’ll go from there. We want him to run before he plays.”

Despite today’s test, Girardi continues to say the calf tightness is seen as a minor issue. He talks as if it’s a matter of days, not weeks, before Ellsbury will be a full player again.

“I’m very confident he’ll be ready April 1,” Girardi said.

    Why not next week?
The opener is almost 2 weeks away.

    Re-post:

Yesterday I said that if the Yanks had any reason to believe Ellsbury wouldn’t be ready for opening day, he would not be engaging in baseball activities. Sounds like he’s been shut down today so I think it’s fair to say him missing opening day is not improbable. Guess Blake was right about this.

So if Ells lands on the DL, does that mean Zolio starts in LF opening day? I’d be down with that.

    YAHOO!

Now we can all be happy. Nothing like official information to remove all of the second guessing right?

    :)

  4. Jerkface March 20th, 2014 at 5:27 pm

And if he were having no symptoms, why then the MRI?

I think the symptoms he is having is ‘tightness’. Just not pain. So there are symptoms.

Jacoby Ellsbury having precautionary MRI on calf, Girardi said. Added that Ellsbury felt no pain.”

    ——-

I’ve been all through this, MRI value for diagnosing soft tissue injuries and the severity thereof is highly dubious. Patient symptoms, a thorough exam and patient history are far more important. And if he were having no symptoms, why then the MRI?

Tightness = strain. He’d be on the DL if this were the regular season…..

ok thanks guys. I thought it was a little over the top (even for randy.) I guess I’m just a few screennames behind on Randy these days. I wish he’d just straighten it out with chad and do his time or whatever and come back. Once he went off the ’61 yankees, I dont recognize him when he comes in.

  12. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 20th, 2014 at 5:31 pm

Once again we have a divergence of opinion! Some believe Ellsbury will be hurt throughout the season, some believe that the precautionary MRI was just that and now he can get back into working out.

So I guess we just have to wait to find out!

  13. Giuseppe Franco March 20th, 2014 at 5:31 pm

Yeah, I can tell you from my own experience that MRIs can and do miss injuries, which ya know, kinda sucks because they are so damn expensive for us common folks.

Tore my rotator cuff 2 years ago and an MRI didn’t catch it.

Instead of playing God or doctor, why not just let it be and wait and see?

    Jerkface March 20th, 2014 at 5:21 pm

but the Ellsbury signing kinda came out of the blue and was pretty much never discussed here before it was done.

Ya there was basically no lead up whatsoever to it. No rumors of Ellsbury meeting with teams. I said that Ellsbury was basically going to get overpaid based on his rep but then I was shocked that it was the Yankees who overpaid him, and by so much. They basically offered double what the Red Sox were rumored to be offering.

Just because a negotiation isn’t made public doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. I’ve often said, that if I was a GM, everything I said to the press would be a lie simply because there’s zero benefit to me announcing to the world what my intentions are.

  17. austinmac March 20th, 2014 at 5:34 pm

Players have remarked for years the Yankees require an MRI for everything. My suggestion is to let it play out. The fact Ellsbury had one means nothing.

  18. Giuseppe Franco March 20th, 2014 at 5:34 pm

I think Ellsbury would’ve had to lose his leg entirely for Girardi not to sound optimistic about him playing Opening Day.

Well yea of course, but I mean there was no news about Ellsbury with ANY team, let alone the Yankees. The Yankees did a lot of work this season just putting out offers to mulitple players, other than Tanaka there was never much drawn out negotiation stuff.

Ellsbury was a Boras guy so there should have been tons of stuff being shoveled out by Heyman and company, but I think the Yankees just blew away the field with their offer.

  21. bigdan22 March 20th, 2014 at 5:36 pm

This whole “MRI is negative” stuff is silly now. Maybe if there were a large tear with lots of bleeding the MRI would show that but the pain would be so severe you know how bad it was without the MRI.

This is a calf strain of uncertain severity. Trying to classify further is a waste of time. The patient’s body will tell you when it’s healed. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess.

So I’m wondering this, and NO, I’m not panicked at all about Ellsbury’s calf, BUT:

If they are telling the truth that he would be playing if it were the RS, then you have to wonder at what point would it become necessary for him to get back into ST games even with the strain so that it doesn’t adversly affect RS games?

Keeping him out for now is no problem but there are only about 10 ST games left, so at some point, keeping him out will start to take away from his ability in the real games.

  32. Madrugador March 20th, 2014 at 5:49 pm

If there was no problem there would have been no MRI. IMO there is no way Ells plays on opening day and it’s early May before he joins the big league team. Guess I undestand why the Sox didn’t go after him real hard. I am laughing now if I’m in Boston.

  33. Hankflorida March 20th, 2014 at 5:53 pm

In other words, what the Redsox offered, the Yankees paid Gardener. The Redsox were not going to pay a guy who was not durable the money that goes to a player with a power bat. What did the Redsox know about Ellsbury’s 2011 season that they were sure it was an abberation?

  34. Ys Guy March 20th, 2014 at 5:53 pm

my prediction on the chart is tentatively 90. I was actually thinking 89 but i put down 90 because it would be easy to remember just like last year’s 85 was.

However I’m thinking of dropping it to 88. Ill leave it for now, but may change it before opening day.

What concerns me isnt the Infield, it’s the middle of the order. The more i look at it, Beltran, Mccann (or Sori), Tex and Sori (or Mccann) isnt that formidable. I love beltran but he didnt seem like the same guy by the end of last season, i like mccann, but idk that he’s a cleanup hitter in the AL East and tex while healthy now is a ? for the whole season. And I also like Sori, but he is 37.

But Ill think about it some more and come up with my final prediction by opening day.

  35. Hans Davenport March 20th, 2014 at 5:54 pm

    Who’s Randy?

  36. Ys Guy March 20th, 2014 at 5:55 pm

I discount what the RS offered Ellsbury b/c nobody in Boston thought they really wanted him back or that he was interested in coming back. I think the RS bid was just to placate fans. I dont think its any real read on what they thought his worth was.

  37. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 20th, 2014 at 5:57 pm

Y’s that’s fine. You have ’til Opening Day and there may be things that happen between now and then that cause you to ratchet up or down.

IDK. It is likely true that Boston fans would be laughing. I would expect that.

Angel Cabrera is my kind of person. He’s old, smokes cigars, drinks beer, and wins golf tournaments when he feels like playing. Not that I ever won at golf, but still, a good makeup.

  40. Ys Guy March 20th, 2014 at 6:00 pm

stuckey, i agree for the most part, but if he goes from now till opening day he’ll be almost 3 weeks from his last game played then. When players miss that much time on the dl they usually need a day or two in the minors before they come back, so we get into the point where sitting would adversly affect opening day. now if he needs the time, fine, but i started by saying that if it were true that he’d be playing if it were the RS, then it should follow that he would need to play at least the last few days before the RS starts.

but if he’s really hurt and would not be playing if it were the RS contrary to what they are saying, then by all means sit him.

  41. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 20th, 2014 at 6:00 pm

I have to agree with this. There was so much consternation when Ellsbury was on the team that I think he ended up like a man without a country. The pack of jackyls who made his life hell ended up being the ones who were retained. I think the Sux saw his departure as more or less a necessity.

well, ill just throw the parallel out there, i think they made an offer they knew ellsbury wouldnt accept just so that fans didnt get crazy about him leaving without getting one.

i think the yankees did the same thing with cano.

these teams can read the market pretty well and had both decided that the player in question was going to get alot more money than they were willing to pay him, so they lowballed the player as a PR move.

i have no problem with that.

nomaas.org is predicting 86 wins for this year.

  56. Ys Guy March 20th, 2014 at 6:26 pm

i dont expect ichiro to get more than about 100 ABs this year. So I’d rather that roster spot be held by him than almonte just because i dont think there will be enough at bats for almonte at the ML level.

now if an OF goes on the DL, they should bring up almonte and play him ahead of ichiro.

this leaves ichiro with almost no role on this team, other than late inning D replacement. but he can only blame his agent for demanding a 2 year deal last offseason. i dont think he has enough left to get anywhere near 3K hits anyway, but if chasing that goal was what he wanted to do, then he should be going year to year on contracts to make sure he’s on a team that will give him the opportunity to play.

i like ichiro, but im not feeling sorry for him at all.

  57. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 20th, 2014 at 6:30 pm

  58. Ys Guy March 20th, 2014 at 6:31 pm

its hard for me to believe this team won’t win more games than last year’s anemic team did, but thats really not the right way to analyze a team.

That means with the addition of Tanaka, Ellsbury, Beltran, McCann and the potential return of Pineda, nomaas.org is predicting only one more win than last season?

This years team isn’t playing in last years MLB, and the 2013 Yankee team was lucky to win 85 games. The baseline for that team was likely lower than that and they lost their best player so there was a lot of work to get above the 85 win threshold. The loss of mariano can not be overstated as well, since having one of the best in the history of the game at a position which literally decides close games is one of the possible reasons they overplayed their runs allowed/runs scored.

This years team also has tons of question marks. How you rate this teams chances comes with how many of those question marks are answered positively.

I see the 2014 Yankees as being a team of huge variance. They could be world beaters, or they could be egg beaters.
