Saturday morning notes: Rotation announcement expected Tuesday

Masahiro Tanaka

Michael Pineda makes his next spring start tomorrow, after which the Yankees are expected to have their most significant fifth-starter discussion to date. Joe Girardi said there’s a good chance he could announce his final decision early next week.

“We’ll probably talk about it Sunday after the game,” Girardi said. “Maybe Tuesday we’ll announce it, would be my guess.”

The general expectation seems to be that Pineda will win the job, but David Phelps has pitched very well this spring. Frankly, so have Vidal Nuno and Adam Warren.

“Rotations can get on a roll, and our rotation has been on a roll,” Girardi said. “And it’s not just five people. It’s like eight people. It’s been really fun to watch, and my guess is they’re competing against each other. I think today’s a heavy workload for Tanaka and Kuroda, so you want to see how they do when the pitch count gets really high. It’s been pretty good. It’s been fun to watch.”

Masahiro Tanaka was chosen for today’s major-league game in Fort Myers. It’s a long bus ride, but Tanaka told the Yankees he’d rather face big league hitters than stay behind to pitch at the complex. This late in the spring, with the Twins playing a home game, there’s a good chance Tanaka will see a lineup full of regulars. He’ll be stretched out to 90 pitches, so this should be his greatest test of the spring.

“I think hitters catch up a little bit,” Girardi said. “They’ve seen breaking balls for a couple of weeks, and they’re getting to see (starters) two and three times in the course of a game, so I think you get a better idea.”

Jacoby Ellsbury· Girardi might announce his rotation on Tuesday, but announcing the final bullpen spots might take another week. “I would think probably we’ll still be evaluating at the end there, but it’s got to be decided before Saturday because we leave Saturday,” he said.

· Jacoby Ellsbury is scheduled to do another workout today. Basically the same stuff he did yesterday — hitting, fielding, running — just more intense. “Just increase what he did from yesterday,” Girardi said. “Probably run a little harder.”

· Girardi said he’s still planning to play Ellsbury no earlier than Tuesday. Girardi said yesterday that he believes there’s time to get Ellsbury into four more games before breaking camp. One of those will probably be a minor league game so that he can get a bunch of at-bats.

· Hiroki Kuroda is pitching at the minor league complex this afternoon. He’ll be stretched out just like Tanaka, probably 90 pitches or so. The Yankees are also sending a bunch of relievers to the minor league complex today, but I don’t have that list. Austin Romine and John Ryan Murphy are going down to catch all of those guys. One of them will catch Kuroda, the other will handle the relievers.

· Although Girardi won’t commit entirely, it seems clear that Francisco Cervelli has won the backup catcher job. He’s making today’s trip to catch Tanaka, and on Monday he’ll go to the minor league complex to catch Nova. “We’re continuing to evaluate,” Girardi said. “He’s a had a great spring. He has the most experience of any of these guys, so he looks really really good.”

· Kelly Johnson is getting his second start at first base. Although Girardi said he might use Johnson at second base during the season, it’s likely Johnson will never play there this spring. Girardi said Johnson has spent so much time at second base, and is so used to playing multiple positions, that he feels no need to get some second base time during spring training. “I’m not worried about him,” Girardi said. “He knows how to play there. During the season (he might play there), but I won’t worry about it in spring training.”

· After the Yankees ran out of innings and couldn’t get David Herndon into last night’s game, Herndon was given the choice of either pitching in a minor league game or making today’s trip to Fort Myers. Apparently the guy’s quite the trooper, because he’s taking the bus ride.

· Adonis Garcia is getting another turn at third base. He’s played mostly outfield this spring — and mostly outfield in pro ball — but he played a lot of infield this winter.

Vidal Nuno· Vidal Nuno, Adam Warren and David Phelps threw bullpens today.

· Today’s second string: C Jose Gil, 1B Francisco Arcia, 2B Yangervis Solarte, SS Ali Castillo, 3B Adonis Garcia (there are no backup outfielders listed, though Mason Williams and Ramon Flores are up from minor league camp to make the trip).

· Today’s scheduled relievers: Danny Burawa, Fred Lewis, Shane Greene, Yoshinori Tateyama, David Herndon (with Mark Montgomery, Aaron Dott, Jeremy Bleich and Pat Venditte up from minor league camp just in case the Yankees need innings).

· Batting practice groups in Tampa:
Group 1: Carlos Beltran, Derek Jeter, Brian Roberts, Alfonso Soriano, Ichiro Suzuki
Group 2: Russ Canzler, Jacoby Ellsbury, John Ryan Murphy, Austin Romine, Mark Teixeira

Why do you assume Detroit is about to sign Drew when they deny it. Heyman’s column, sugesting that they SHOULD sign him (and basically laying out the terms for such a signing) is the only thing i see in reference to the Tigers signing him. The dodgers need IF help, too, their rookie 2B got sent down and they’re starting with dee gordon at 2b, but they’re also apparently not interested.

I think Drew is still totally available to the Yankees, Mets or anyone else, but there are still no takers.

  2. Ys Guy March 22nd, 2014 at 10:12 am

“Because it just makes too much sense for them…..if they don’t then they are really overvaluing a 2nd roid draft pick”
    =====================================
Makes alot more sense for the Mets, who’s pick is protected, but they’re taking a pass, too.

  3. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 10:20 am

Tanaka’s going to be a whole lot of interesting no matter what.

  4. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 10:26 am

Ys, I was thinking of you the other day. I was up in the loft getting reacquainted with some vintage table lamps I didn’t know were there. Perfect for some of your clentele to get gaga over.

  5. blake March 22nd, 2014 at 10:27 am

I actually don’t think Drew makes any sense for the mets…..what good does it do them to win 73 games instead of 71? And btw Bowden said yesterday that he heard the mets made a significant 2 year offer and were turned down

  6. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 10:31 am

Ys, was it you who related D’Arnaud was struggling? Toronto has never been a catching factory, and has always relied on the durable likes of Ernie Whitt and Pat Borders.

  7. 86w183 March 22nd, 2014 at 10:32 am

Morning all, long time no see

Busiest month of the year for me… lots more time starting with opening day.

Like what’s happened so far this spring. No interest in signing a shortstop to play 3B or 2B. However I think it’s insane to think Jeter, Roberts and Johnson will each play 140 games. In fact, it might be nuts to think ANY of the three can play that much.

  8. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 10:37 am

Hi 86, hope your work is the fruitful kind, not the bucket out the boat variety.

  9. Mottsx March 22nd, 2014 at 10:46 am

Mets offered 2/20 . Really can’t imagine what Drew wants

    A few quick drive-bys:

Here’s my rotation – actually the one I think the Yanks will go with:

    CC
    Tanaka
    Kuroda
    Nova
    Pineda

    **************

I’m rooting for the Tar Heels now. Tough loss for PC. Cotton definitely came as advertised.

Will post updated chart once a day now until Ys Opening Day. Will also post the potential winners for the second award – earliest to pick correct prediction. BB.

jmills —– All good… but April 5-6 will be my first weekend off since February 1-2.

Trish — put me down for 93 winz

Looks like the rotation is going to be plenty good. CC will get stronger thru the year and Pineda could be on his way to being special.

Would feel better if they could nail a real 3B

  17. Tar March 22nd, 2014 at 10:56 am

“I’m rooting for the Tar Heels now. Tough loss for PC. Cotton definitely came as advertised.”

The kid went off on the Heels. Reminded me of a young Iverson. The Heels were lucky to win that one.

Trader… had to run to Lowes ( my second home it seems ). I actually think Iowa is an easier match up for the Heels, than Providence was. But as you know….. anything can and does happen in this tourney.

Thanks to you and Trish for the for the well wishes, they need them for sure.

  18. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 10:57 am

Crap, RIB beat me to it.

  19. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 22nd, 2014 at 10:58 am

“Trish, what if I win, do I have to share les chocolates?”

Jmills – no. :) In a magnanimous moment, I announced that each person in the winning category would get the same prize – 5 Ritter Sports Bars, flavors of their choice!

And then the first person who predicted the correct number, according to date of prediction, would be a double winner.

That’s why I’m rooting for Cashmoney to win. I like his prediction the best, plus since he’s the only one in his category, I have to pay out less!!!

    :D

  20. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 11:00 am

We have Lowes here too. I hate shopping, and navigate places as quickly as possible with the stupid cart.

  21. Tar March 22nd, 2014 at 11:00 am

    Trish

I have to run……. but I just counted 17 names on your list that are definitely “suspect”. If you want later I will list them, but it’s up to you.

  22. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 22nd, 2014 at 11:03 am

Tar – E Chihuahua! Sure name them for me. In fact, we should have each other’s emails so feel free to ask Chad to patch you on through.

I’ll be interested to see which names you list. And of course my difficulty is always in knowing for sure (since I have been accused of being other peeps, amongst them the illustrious Rhapsody in Blue – an honor for sure!)

    :D

  23. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 22nd, 2014 at 11:05 am

It really will annoy me to get played, especially since I do this out of the goodness of my heart – and pocketbook!

  24. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 11:10 am

Trish, you don’t have to worry about me, I don’t know how I created an account here in the first place ( I was an insomniac early one Sunday morning May of 2012 – tempus fugit ), and I’m just too lazy and undisciplined to even try.

  25. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 11:11 am

In other words, if Chad has to bouncer me, its lights out.

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 22nd, 2014 at 11:12 am

Okay, I have changed my vote to Ray VT. I really didn’t notice that Cashmoney had managed to go over the limit. I just knew it was the highest number of wins.

    Cashmoney!

    jmills is after my chocolate.

  28. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 11:17 am

RIB, that’s right, I’m coming down there to load the Prelude up like hotel soaps and bathrobes ( couple of nice ones from Amsterdam ).

  29. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 22nd, 2014 at 11:18 am

jmills – you’re the last person I or anyone else would suspect! But there are people who have had a history of returning under other monikers after being banned – or after announcing their departure – or even just to have more than one screen name here, I guess – and the more observant here have been able to detect those returns.

That type of detection is definitely one of my lesser strengths.

But the difficulty is when someone accuses a person of having more than one identity when it is absolutely false. I know because it’s been done to me. That’s why I have to be really cautious when it comes to removing people from the chat. I wish there was a way that Chad could identify imposters/reruns but the people who do it know how to trick the system unfortunately.

  30. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 22nd, 2014 at 11:19 am

    “removing people from the chat”

The way it would be said in Beantown.

I meant removing people from the chart.

    :)

  31. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 11:20 am

The first night in that Amsterdam hotel, it was fresh flowers. After that, no flowers and increased rates. Expensive place to eat too.

    … I like, ” removing people from the chat ” :D

  33. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 22nd, 2014 at 11:33 am

Here’s some fun! For anyone who speaks Dutch, maybe you can translate.

I wanted to find the website that had the most complete list of Ritter Sports Bars so you can start to practice picking out your faves! Well unfortunately it’s a Dutch website. I’m so familiar with the candy that just by looking at the bars I sort of knew all of the flavors. But maybe looking at the picture will be able to help you. If you mouse to each separate bar, it will be displayed for you.

If I can figure out a way to translate the page, I’ll provide a link to the translation!

It’s interesting that Johnson has not played 2b this spring. I think it’s been widely assumed that if Roberts got hurt, Johnson would take over at 2b but now I don’t that’s the case. I think that would be Nunie’s role perhaps at first (with Ryan on the roster) or Anna’s (if Anna got called up to take Roberts place). With Ryan likely on the DL the 2b backup falls to Nunie or Anna. I think the Yanks want Johnson to play 3b as much as possible.

  35. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 11:38 am

…Don’t look at me, there are times I struggle with English.

  36. jmills March 22nd, 2014 at 11:43 am

I’m ready for some baseball…..I think. What was I vs you people last year? 4-14? 5-13?

  37. bigdan22 March 22nd, 2014 at 11:55 am

“General manager Brian Cashman said the team would look within to replace Ryan, with Eduardo Nunez, Dean Anna and Yangervis Solarte all able to play short.”

    —-

This is a excerpt from today’s Post. Cashman identifies what I’ve referred to as the “Triple Option,” Nunez, Anna and Solarte as the current solution for infield depth. A little over two weeks ago I discussed this in detail. In my post, I referred to the Triple Option as the solution for infield depth for 2b and 3b but it also works for SS as well if it’s Ryan that’s injured. I’m not so sure the Yanks would stay “internal” if Jeter were laid up for any length of time.

I’ve copied my post from 3/6 discussing the infield depth solution:

    —–

Well, a rainy spring day in Florida gives us an opportunity to take stock. So what have the Yanks learned so far? It’s still too early for a lot of questions to be answered but there is a solution developing in the infield and it’s called “the Triple Option.” Nunie, Solarte and Anna.

For the time being at least, this is the Yanks answer to infield depth at third and second. SS has been covered for awhile. That of course is Jeter and Ryan. Anything else is a remote plan C which is not on the radar. But with respect to possible injuries to either Johnson (the clear 3b starter) and Roberts, the Yanks have multiple options. If Roberts goes down, the Yanks could fill in there with Nunie. Or move Johnson over and play Nunie at 3rd. Or play Solarte at third. Or replace Roberts with Anna. If Johnson goes down, he can be replaced with either Nunie, Solarte or Anna. Of the Triple Option, one is a righty, one a lefty and one a switch. All can be sent down to AAA. Only Solarte is not on the 40 man.

Having options is the key thing here and the Triple Option gives the Yanks that. If the first option doesn’t work out, there are several other permutations. Mind you, this would only need to be a temporary solution. Until Johnson or Roberts returns to the lineup or a trade can be made. The Yanks would hope that the Triple Option solution would be good enough so as to not encourage a potential trading partner to put a gun to the Yanks’ head in a possible trade.

  38. mick March 22nd, 2014 at 12:00 pm

I say Solarte gets sent down and Anna stays.
    Nunez will definitely stay.
If Anna can field at SS, trade Ryan, he is superfluous.

  39. SweetSpot March 22nd, 2014 at 12:05 pm

Hello everyone. I really like Cashman’s approach here if Ryan can’t go to start the regular season. Not giving young players the chance to step up is something the Bombers have been criticized for in the past and this is a perfect opportunity to see what Solarte and/or Anna have to offer. They won’t play much, but trying this option is preferable to looking for someone outside the organization in my opinion.

  40. mick March 22nd, 2014 at 12:10 pm

When you have the depth that Solarte, Anna and Sizemore provide, why did they sign a guy like Ryan who can ONLY field?

Sounds like a Stewie move to me…

  41. blake March 22nd, 2014 at 12:17 pm

The Yankees don’t have infield depth…..they have infield clutter…..

It has to do with how Lohud is set-up right? Or something along those lines.

  47. Shame Spencer March 22nd, 2014 at 1:10 pm

Nope, it doesn’t have to do with LoHud. You can use proxies to change your IP address. Lohud bans the IP addresses that are associated with the offending poster, but you just proxy again for another and you’re back.

  49. Shame Spencer March 22nd, 2014 at 1:12 pm

I’ve really enjoyed watching Tanaka this spring… Even when he’s not on, his pitches have crazy good movement.

  50. Tar March 22nd, 2014 at 1:18 pm

“Which is the longer throw – from SS or 3B?”

It can be either, depends on where and how deep they are playing. I believe Blake was talking about a SS going to his right in the 5.5 hole at SS. Although he can answer himself.

And FTR I still say average depth at 3b and average depth, and average depth at SS, the 3rd base is the longer throw.

Now go take your meds…. the blog is consuming you again. And yes WCYF/bloj is kaput, although the names that have been popping up recently are certainly suspect.

  51. Ys Guy March 22nd, 2014 at 1:20 pm

im back, hey mills, my partner (and gf) handles the lamps and knick-knacks and all, I pretty much just do food, but she’d be very interested in lamps.

Yes it was me who mentioned that the Mets are getting worried about d’arnaud. He’s still gonna be their starter but im hearing noise that they are looking to upgrade from recker as the b/u in case d’arnaud keeps not hitting. No suggestion that he could get sent down yet, but that does seem to be out there.

As for Drew to the Mets, he’d be one of their best hitters and bat somewhere in the middle of the order, and he’s likely a bigger upgrade over tejada than he would be over roberts or johnson, so i’d say he would have a greater effect on thier season than on the other teams supposedly ‘in play’.

That’s something I’ve always wondered about WAR, because I think certain players are worth more wins to some teams and less to others.

Phil Yews with Kim on WFAN this morning was his usually humble, reflective and very nice self. Kim asked him to report back to her via twitter whether they still have the pork-chops-on-a-stick at Target Field.
