Out of a jam: Does Betances have a bullpen spot locked up?

Dellin BetancesFor six innings, all eyes were on Michael Pineda. Then the seventh inning happened, and Dellin Betances stole the show.

Bases loaded. One out. Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion coming to the plate. Seems fair to wonder whether this was the moment Betances locked up a spot in the Yankees bullpen. He struck out Bautista on four sliders — Bautista slammed his bat when he went down looking — then Encarnacion flied to left. It was an exclamation point on an already impressive spring for Betances.

“Obviously, for me, every time I go out there this spring it means something,” he said, “because I know I’m fighting for a spot. At least, in my eyes I’m fighting for a spot, so I’m just trying to make the best impression I can.”

Mission accomplished.

“Sure does (make an impression),” Joe Girardi said. “It’s pretty good stuff, because those guys aren’t going to give at bats away. And Bautista was slamming his bat down. He never gives anything away.”

Betances has a 0.87 ERA through 10.1 innings this spring. He’s allowed just four hits and four walks while striking out nine. He could be optioned to the minors, but at this point it’s hard to say why the Yankees would want to send him down. With a spot on the 40-man, overwhelming numbers in Triple-A a year ago, and a strong performance this spring, it’s hard to find a good reason not to keep Betances.

“He has had a good spring,” Girardi said. “He threw back to back days; he threw yesterday and he threw today. We have a lot of close competitions here. I have some tough decisions to make.”

Betances was brought out of the bullpen to clean up a mess left by Cesar Cabral (who had been pretty good before allowing a single and two walks this afternoon). Warming up in the bullpen, Betances asked for advice from Triple-A pitching coach Scott Aldred.

“I said, ‘Scotty, what do you think? First pitch offspeed?’” Betances said. “He’s like, ‘Just follow McCann’s game plan. He’s been calling a great game from the start.’ I just tried to go out there and make pitches.”

McCann asked for nothing but sliders against Bautista. Against Encarnacion, the approach was completely different. Four straight fastballs — two bad ones, then two good ones — before Betances went back to the slider for the fly ball that ended the inning.

“I feel good right now,” Betances said. “I feel good the way I’m throwing the ball. (Making the team) is not up to me at the end of the day. For me, I’ve done a good job. There’s more stuff I can improve on, but I feel like I’ve done good. It’s not up to me, at the end of the day. I feel like our whole pitching staff has been pitching great, so I’m ready for whatever.”

If Spring Training counts for anything Big D will be in the pen.

  2. Jerkface March 23rd, 2014 at 4:55 pm

Will be fun to watch Betances in the late innings this year. That punch out of Jose Bautista was so cool to watch.

  3. sigiqaped March 23rd, 2014 at 5:01 pm

His fastball was straight last year and he got smacked around in limited appearances.

All due respects to Betances, this was a day for learning about Pineda:

Pineda’s line today tells you all you need to know regarding what was learned today. Forget about the runs. 6 innings, 6 hits, 2 strike outs, no walks. Here’s what we learned:

–First and foremost, Pineda’s slider is not quite as dominant against a major league line up as it is against a minor league one. And he will even occasionally hang a few. I guess that’s bound to happen when you throw so many. Two hanging sliders were hit for loud doubles today. But most ended up weak ground outs. In his earlier starts, those ground outs were swing and misses. His slider is def a plus pitch. Not sure it’s plus plus though.

–He gets a lot of ground balls. That’s real good. And he’s around the strike zone. No walks today.

–He’s basically a two pitch pitcher with his second pitch, the FB being average. He sat pretty much 89-91 (but there were lots of non-readings). He had two FBs at 92 and two at 93 (his max) and a few at 88. His FB control was good but his command in the zone wasn’t particularly good. But he wasn’t missing up in the zone. His CU is still hard to recognize and pretty much non-existent.

–After his second start, his first televised, I thought that he didn’t look ready for the major leagues. After his third start, Pineda was dominant against a minor league lineup. Today he looks ready to be a backend starter. Until he gains more arm strength or adds a third pitch or much better command in the zone, I doubt he can be a front end starter. I had handicapped Pineda as a 2-1 underdog to Phelps. Now I think it’s a push. While both pitchers are very different from each other, I’d expect both to have similar results if given the opportunity as a 5th starter.

  5. PacoDooley March 23rd, 2014 at 5:11 pm

This just reminds me about what a control mess both he and Brackman were – i’m shocked that they managed to sort out his control issues (while Brackman is now trying to be a basketball player…)

  6. bigdan22 March 23rd, 2014 at 5:22 pm

Some other notes about the game:

–Betances’ four curves to Bautista were pretty sweet. But I’m pretty sure next time he see Betances he’ll swing at one. Encarnacion did pick out a curve to swing at and didn’t miss a grand slam by much.

–Burawa is pumping gas (96) but I think he needs a more consistent slider to turn outs into strike outs. Three very loud outs today.

–We have to start calling Jeter and Tex the regression twins. They actually look worse now than two weeks ago. Especially Tex left-handed. I would love a couple nice ABs from both before the team heads north.

–Cabral was bad today but he’ll get another shot or two before the bullpen is decided.

–If Nunie doesn’t hit just a little bit what value does he have?

  7. austinmac March 23rd, 2014 at 5:24 pm

    Dan,

I watched his slider today and in his last start. It was simply not as sharp today except for two or three.

Glad to know our MiLB prospects are much better than Baltimore has picked-up this week:

Luis Ayala…who the Orioles had traded to Atlanta for Chris Jones.
Ayala struggled away from Baltimore, but now is back with a minor league deal.

David Adams… Adams (27) who started 38 games last year for the New York Yankees, is a very polished fielder.
He is not quite as strong with his bat, hitting .193 in 2013 with 27 hits and 13 RBIs.
For the Cleveland Indians this spring, appearing in 17 games and getting 9 hits in 32 at-bats for a .281 batting average.
Adams is likely to be another utility infielder in the Orioles organization.
And with some of their other utility options, such as Alexi Casilla and Alex Gonzalez either making the team or possibly opting out, the Orioles will need that depth.

Brett Wallace… a corner infielder, was the first round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008.

Wallace has played 311 major league games in his career, all with the Houston Astros.
He is a career .242 hitter, with 29 home runs.
Wallace, also 27, is a guy who strikes out a lot, but some think he hasn’t quite figured it out yet.
He does have several good hitting years in the minor leagues.
“If you look at his numbers in the minors, he’s hit over .300 there.
It hasn’t translated as effectively to the big leagues, so maybe a little more time will help with that. He can hit.
He hit 24 home runs last year between Triple-A and the big leagues.”

    Dan,

I watched his slider today and in his last start. It was simply not as sharp today except for two or three.

    —-

He def threw some bad sliders today. But he threw quite a few good ones too and the Jays were able to make contact. Not hard contact, but contact nevertheless. That’s the real difference today. Much better opposition.

  10. Crawdaddy March 23rd, 2014 at 5:32 pm

I guess some of us didn’t see the change ups, Pineda threw today.

Yanks are quietly building a strong, young rotation. And they’re doing the same thing in the pen. Lots of young power pen arms in the system. All you really need, for a good pen, is a couple of them to pan out. The pitching future is bright.

  13. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 23rd, 2014 at 5:39 pm

Wow Crawdaddy! Great to see you!!!

Do you want to get on the prediction chart? You have until opening day to do so if you want to.

Are there 32 teams that start off in the NCAA tournament?

  15. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 23rd, 2014 at 5:42 pm

I’m trying to figure out how many possible winning combinations there are. I’m thinking that it is 32 factorial. I will actually try to figure that out.

  16. exiledintampa March 23rd, 2014 at 5:44 pm

Trish 64 teams 68 with the extra 4

9 quadrillion combinations. 9 with about 16 zeros

  19. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 23rd, 2014 at 5:45 pm

Never mind. I don’t think factorial is the right word. But I think it’s something like 32x31x30x29 (etc.) I thought I remembered that being “factorial” from when I took stats in college.

  20. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 23rd, 2014 at 5:46 pm

“9 quadrillion combinations. 9 with about 16 zeros”

Holy smokes! I was hoping you could get enough people together and have each one take a different combination. No wonder Buffet’s not worried about anyone winning it.

  21. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 23rd, 2014 at 5:47 pm

“Trish 64 teams 68 with the extra 4″

Thanks Exiled. I was thinking of the number of games, not teams. That makes it even worse.

  22. mick March 23rd, 2014 at 5:47 pm

Buffet is offering a 3m buyout for anyone who was 1 game away from winning it all.

  23. tomingeorgia March 23rd, 2014 at 5:48 pm

    Trisha,
68 teams start the tournament Four of those “play in” for two spots in the 64. Iv’e read that to pick a perfect ballot, the odds are seven quintillion to one. Buffet doesn’t throw his money around recklessly.

  24. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 23rd, 2014 at 5:49 pm

Does anyone know how long Buffet’s been doing this? I wonder if anyone ever even came close.

    —-

I’ve noticed this as well and that’s not good when your other 2 infielders are Johnson and Roberts the team is counting on them to carry the entire infield.

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 23rd, 2014 at 5:51 pm

“Buffet is offering a 3m buyout for anyone who was 1 game away from winning it all.”

As tempting as it would be to go for it, I think I’d take the 3m and run. Not that I’m saying he’d do this, but it would be cheaper for Buffet to offer a few mil each, to each of the refs, to make sure that the other team won, than to pay out a billion.

  27. CountryClub March 23rd, 2014 at 5:51 pm

This was the first yr Buffet offered his prize. All 11 million people that entered his contest were knocked out after Friday night’s games.

  28. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 23rd, 2014 at 5:52 pm

    “Is that really true?”

    Yes.

  29. mick March 23rd, 2014 at 5:52 pm

I would not bat Tex 4th, at least not now.
He is a notoriously slow starter and if Girardi does it’s only b/c he’s in love with back to back switchers up 3 & 4.
Soriano or McCann should hit 4th dep on the pitcher with Tex 6th.
You can always move him up.
    That and Joes loyalty issues.

  30. CountryClub March 23rd, 2014 at 5:52 pm

I won’t worry about Jeter or Teix until the team has played about 30 reg season games.

  31. mick March 23rd, 2014 at 5:53 pm

“This was the first yr Buffet offered his prize. All 11 million people that entered his contest were knocked out after Friday night’s games.”

Wow. Think about this for conspiracy theory. Picture that all of the 11 million went for some astronomical favorite and Buffet paid the refs to make such horrendous calls that the astronomical favorite actually lost! Wasn’t Buffet the one who intervened for Arod?

Not saying he did it! But it makes for really good conspiracy theory. And not saying he has to since those odds are so ridiculous that Buffet wouldn’t have to start worrying until someone really stuck.

Knowing that Jeter will be put 2nd, here is what Girardi’s lineup should be.

    Ells
    Jeter
    Beltran
    Soriano
    McCann
    Tex
    Johnson
    Roberts
    Gardner

Ideally, Ellsbury and Gardner should be 1/2.
Gardner takes a lot of pitches and would give Ellsbury a lot of chances to steal.
Jeter hits into a lot of double plays.

So being respectful to jeter, and optimal, here is my suggestion.

    Ells
    Gardner
    Jeter
    Beltran
    Soriano
    McCann
    Tex
    Johnson
    Roberts

    Bench:
    Cervelli
Ichiro (Or Almonte if Ichiro is traded)
    Anna/Solarte
Canzler/someone who can back up 1st base)

Pineda has the 5th spot locked up. Decent performance against a MLB lineup. His FB started with a 9 more often than an 8 with decent command. That’s all I needed to see.

Pineda is another guy who gets a lot of GB, so the IF defense is really going to be important, and Nunez getting too many starts anywhere would not be a good thing.

Pineda is another guy who gets a lot of GB

Maybe. But in 2011 he was an extreme flyball pitcher. He used to be a sinker baller low 90s guy before he got his big fastball in late 2010-2011, so maybe losing velocity has helped him get back to a more groundball oriented style, but I just want to say that his major league performance to this point does not suggest he gets lots of GB.

Pineda could end up being a reverse Hughes, where he loses his stuff a little but becomes a stronger pitcher.

I don’t understand why Nunez was not trained on 2B instead of 3B. I get that he has a great arm, but he could have been a Cano-like guy at 2B and obviously is smart enough for the foot work…But it probably compliments his range and gives him shorter distance to throw.

This year, he would be a great backup for Roberts, who will get hurt…

  73. bigdan22 March 23rd, 2014 at 6:53 pm

Pineda got most of his ground balls today off of his slider. In previous starts, hitters were swinging and missing that pitch. Today the Jays were making mostly weak contact on it. If Pineda continues throw his slider as much as he did today he’ll likely increase his ground ball tendency. The problem today was he hung his slider probably five or six times. Twice it was hit hard for doubles. The other hangers were just missed, one by Bautista where he popped up.

I worry about a pitcher who throws a slider as much as Pineda does. I think eventually it will be hung and hit hard. If you have one plus pitch I think it’s better if it’s a fastball or at least an average fastball with superior command.

Until Jeter can prove he can hit right hand pitching he should bat third against lefties an eighth against righties.

Soriano should bat no higher then sixth as he does not get on base enough.

tom, I’m going to watch your man Kyle Bush in action. I recommend a day out at the races to anybody. Really enjoyed the Toronto Indy. Reasonable ticket, free coffee, free drink, and I sat in the Dr Pepper section – ( the Dr Pepper ladies had a free shirt for moi!) I like the way they take the drivers around to wave at the fans prior to event ( other sports could learn from this ). Big oval and F1 capable road track going up close to me. F1 might even move from the gilles villeneuve course in Montreal. They can call it ” the jmills circuit ” here :D

tom, I’m working on causing death to those nasty commas – kick me around some if I’m out of line….please

  79. pete2 March 23rd, 2014 at 7:09 pm

“Maybe. But in 2011 he was an extreme flyball pitcher. He used to be a sinker baller low 90s guy before he got his big fastball in late 2010-2011, so maybe losing velocity has helped him get back to a more groundball oriented style, but I just want to say that his major league performance to this point does not suggest he gets lots of GB.”

Jerkface, I realize that, but last year in AAA (only saw 2 games) and this year in ST he got a lot of GB . I imagine losing velocity causes the FB to sink a bit more, and maybe the slider gets more downward action as well. I think he had about 13 GB today.

AAA ground ball rates can be deceptive because even a guy like Hughes got tons of GBs because they simply dominate hitters on stuff and location. There are more than a few pitchers whose GB rates completely disappeared once they get to the majors.

If Pineda can keep up the GB rates from this spring and from AAA then that will be really awesome. Assuming the IF doesn’t let him down :)

4 spots are locked up, and Pineda was not one of the 4, only the 5th was up for grabs and thats his.

Pineda was already a #2 or #3 SP’er, whether he gets back to that is anyones guess. Going to be more about him staying healthy than anything the Yankees can do.

"Eh bien, oui, un bel homme. Certes, un courageux d’un." Aron sourit poliment à Hollister, mais il semble être plutôt en vain cacher son amusement à la façon dont l’homme traite ses affaires en ce qui concerne Starling. Il regarde vers sa propre monture, et le dos à la jeune femme. «Avant vous avez tendance à sa monture, jeune maîtresse, ont sellé mon chargeur. Je vais quitter dès que j’assiste à mes affaires ici."

Its such as you read my thoughts! You seem to
understand so much about this, like you wrote the e-book in it or something.

I believe that you could do with a few % to power the message home a bit,
but instead of that, this is magnificent blog. A great read.
    I’ll certainly be back.

Hmm is anyone else encountering problems with the
pictures on this blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a
problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any feedback would be
    greatly appreciated.

Fashion is still slightly stuck in the 90s. And this season muse is Cher Horowitz from our favourite 90s film, Clueless. From matching jackets and skirts at Sister by Sibling and Miu Miu, to slip dresses and pumps at DKNY and cropped slogan tees at Alexander Wang, it all about the Valley girls this season. Grab your most capable looking outfit for SS14.

If you work for someone else you can map to make anywhere from $ 44,000 to $ 67,000 per year DEPENDING on your experience. Certainly And You Would probably want to work for someone else for awhile you’ve received your education Effective and Necessary licenses, if required in your state, just to get some handson experience and learn how the practice is run. Other factoring depends on the kind of practice you Would be working in, how much education you-have and of course how long you’ve been working as an acupuncturist if you’re not a new graduate.
