Yankees 40-man issues could determine final roster spots

Watching the final round of batting practice yesterday, I decided to get some video of Yangervis Solarte, Scott Sizemore and Zelous Wheeler. They seemed interesting to me because they weren’t particularly familiar before camp opened, but they’ve all played well. Or really, really well. Here are the individual OPS numbers for each of the five infielders vying for two roster spots.

Yangervis Solarte: 1.141
Zelous Wheeler: .995
Scott Sizemore: .681
Dean Anna: .640
Eduardo Nunez: .637

So which two do I expect to actually make break camp with the team? Nunez and Anna, of course, and there are two reasons for that.

1. Can’t make too much of spring stats. Maybe Solarte and Wheeler are going to be perfectly good big league players, but I don’t think 35 spring at-bats makes a very compelling case. Both were minor league free agents for a reason, and if they don’t break camp with the Yankees, they’ll have a chance to continue making their case in the minors. No harm in that. They’ve made a terrific first impression, and that’s all non-roster invitees are looking for in most cases.

2. The 40-man roster is a very real factor, and it is probably the most important reason that I expect Nunez and Anna to break camp with the Yankees. Those two can go to Houston for the season opener without forcing the Yankees to lose someone else. I think that’s especially relevant in the case of the second utility man, who will likely be replaced by Brendan Ryan fairly quickly. No sense having to DFA someone else just to carry a guy for a week or two.

As the Yankees enter their final week of spring training, keep these 40-man roster issues in mind.

Vidal NunoROTATION
Candidates on the 40-man: All of them
Candidates not on the 40-man: None of them
No issues here, not out of camp and possibly not at any point this season. The Yankees obviously have CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Masahiro Tanaka and Ivan Nova on the 40-man. They also have fifth-starter candidates Michael Pineda, David Phelps, Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno already on the 40-man. Plus, they have healthy Manny Banuelos and spring standout Shane Greene on the 40-man, along with Nik Turley and Bryan Mitchell. That’s a lot of upper-level options that come with no 40-man complications. Chase Whitley, who was in big league camp and is being converted to a starter this season, is not on the 40-man.

BULLPEN
Candidates on the 40-man: Dellin Betances, Preston Claiborne, Cesar Cabral (plus the fifth starter candidates and the three bullpen locks)
Candidates not on the 40-man: Fred Lewis, Chris Leroux, Jim Miller, Matt Daley, David Herndon, Yoshinori Tateyama, Danny Burawa
Even if the Yankees carry each of their fifth starter candidates (three of them in the bullpen) along with the late-inning trio of Dave Robertson, Shawn Kelley and Matt Thornton, there would still be room for one more guy. For now, Betances seems to be a heavy favorite because he’s pitched so well this spring. Beyond that, though, the 40-man could become an issue. Leroux and Daley have been two of the absolute best pitchers in camp, and Lewis has been a real eye-opener, but is it worth losing someone else just to carry one of them as the last man in the bullpen? Have they been good enough to absolutely beat out Claiborne, Cabral or Nuno?

CATCHER
Candidates on the 40-man: All of them
Candidates not on the 40-man: None of them
Like the bullpen, this is a non-issue, and should be a non-issue all year. If anything, the Yankees have too many catchers on the 40-man. They have five of them, which is a ton of readily available depth behind the plate. All but Francisco Cervelli have options, which could be a compelling reason to carry Cervelli as the big league backup (though, to be fair, he’s certainly earned the job with the way he’s played this spring).

Yangervis SolarteINFIELD
Candidates on the 40-man: Brendan Ryan, Eduardo Nunez, Dean Anna (plus the infield regulars)
Candidates not on the 40-man: Yangervis Solarte, Zelous Wheeler, Scott Sizemore
Already went over this above. Anna was probably not going to be protected with a 40-man spot with the Padres, but the Yankees — recognizing their need to restructure their infield depth after last season’s difficulties — traded for him and immediately put him on the 40-man. That could be his ticket to the big leagues, at least until Ryan gets healthy. It’s worth noting that both Nunez and Anna have options, so they can be sent down to Triple-A if they don’t play well. The leash could be short considering the way the alternatives have played this spring. Sizemore can opt out on May 1, so he might have basically a month-long audition in Triple-A before the Yankees decide whether to make a move with him.

OUTFIELD
Candidates on the 40-man: Ichiro Suzuki, Zoilo Almonte (plus the outfield regulars)
Candidates not on the 40-man: Adonis Garcia
Unless they can find a trade partner, it seems inevitable that the Yankees will break camp with Ichiro as their fifth outfielder, probably used primarily for pinch running and right field defense. Of course, Almonte and Garcia are each among the Yankees top five in OPS this spring (among players with at least 15 at-bats). They’ve each been terrific at the plate, especially Almonte who could be a readily available replacement if one of the outfield regulars gets hurt or if Ichiro plays so poorly in the first month or two that the Yankees decide to cut their losses and make a change. It’s worth noting that both Slade Heathcott and Ramon Flores are also on the 40-man and could come up easily if some left-handed speed were necessary.

Pretty sure Chad’s assessment is what will happen.. Girardi is conservative enough that I think we can all agree there won’t be any surprises.

The fact that people take issue with some of the repeated debates on this blog boggles my mind when you juxtapose it with the nonsense reporting half the beat guys do during ST. If professionals can’t come up with an interesting thought, I dunno why a bunch of amateurs like us are expected to do much better…

I didn’t get to watch both games completely but I did notice some spotty D in the INF. No real surprise, but I hope the Yankees can keep scoring 5 runs per game.

    No kidding.

Some people may be tired of reading about the loss of Cano and debating whether the Yanks should sign Drew but those two issues have more merit than stating the obvious that Robertson will never be Mo.

There aren’t many issues where you can get a 100% agreement from all Yankee fans but that would most definitely be it.

@PeteAbe Red Sox announce 1-year extension for @davidortiz with club/vesting option for ’16 and club option for ’17.

  10. hardwired7 March 24th, 2014 at 9:20 am

The ink’s not even dry yet on this extension and Ortiz is probably already grumbling about his next contract.

  11. Shame Spencer March 24th, 2014 at 9:20 am

Ortiz man… the guy will never have to eat sh*t for being a cheater. My favorite thing about Ortiz right now is that MLB is letting him produce a show on (I think?) MTV.

David Ortiz is the face of MLB lol. What a screwy world this is.

@Ken_Rosenthal Difficult to grasp Lombardozzi-for-A. Gonzalez for #Tigers unless DET getting another piece. Lombo solid UTL. AGon is 37, 65G last 2 years.

It reallh annoys me when the words “future HOFer” get tied to David Ortiz…….shouldn’t a DH who didn’t fail a steroid test get in first before we even discuss David Ortiz? How in the world could he get in and not Barry Bonds who was 5x the player and never failed a test?

The media just spins facts however they want the narrative to go surrounding the HOF and it’s a real shame

  16. sigiqaped March 24th, 2014 at 9:37 am

I really think it all comes down to the likeability factor.

Ortiz is liked by most members of the media and gets the benefit of the doubt while guys like Clemens and Bonds were not and don’t get that same benefit of the doubt.

    Gotta run.

An excellent analysis, Chad. How about the Dawson Award? Solarte maybe?

  20. 86w183 March 24th, 2014 at 9:42 am

    Good morning all —–

Ortiz has gotten a free pass for whatever reason(s). I don’t consider him a Hall of Famer because all he does is hit, and he’s a .287 hitter. He adds nothing on the bases and nothing defensively.

  21. sigiqaped March 24th, 2014 at 9:43 am

“I really think it all comes down to the likeability factor.”

Not the reason. Not even close.

It will be really interesting when/if Ortiz gets in. It could end up being the break in the damn that allows other – more deserving players with PED ties notwithstanding – into the Hall.

  24. Cashmoney March 24th, 2014 at 9:48 am

Ortiz has been amazing for the BoSox. 3WS titles and think about it 962 OPS in almost 82 games in the PS. The definition of clutch. He is everything you want in a DH.

I will leave the meaningless HOF debates to the forum til everyone’s face blows up.

“It will be really interesting when/if Ortiz gets in. It could end up being the break in the damn that allows other – more deserving players with PED ties notwithstanding – into the Hall.”

Or not. It could be just like the Jim Rice induction.

  26. sjb23 March 24th, 2014 at 9:50 am

Regarding the 40-man. I see one possible upgrade. I think it would be smart to add Danny Burawa (I like his velocity) and remove Preston Claiborne (just another “brick in the wall”)

  27. sigiqaped March 24th, 2014 at 9:52 am

Claiborne is definitely just another brick in the wall.

  28. Shame Spencer March 24th, 2014 at 9:53 am

I think at the very least if he is inducted it will force voters to reexamine their picks and approach to PED associations.

  29. Shame Spencer March 24th, 2014 at 9:54 am

So the Tigers are now officially out of the Drew thing.. he might still go to the Mets.

  30. sigiqaped March 24th, 2014 at 9:55 am

“I think at the very least if he is inducted it will force voters to reexamine their picks and approach to PED associations.”

Nope, because as far as the voters are concerned, he has no connection to PED.

  31. NYY fan in NH March 24th, 2014 at 9:59 am

Ortiz is a piece of crap that and everything that relates to PED’s with this guy is swept under the rug! Face of MLB for a guy who smashes dugout phones and doesn’t even have a position is ludicrous!!

  32. mick March 24th, 2014 at 10:00 am

If Papi keeps up his pace, and stays “clean”, with 500 HR’s he will get in.

  33. mick March 24th, 2014 at 10:05 am

If they legalize just one of the PED’s that would open the door.
Or at least a class of them, which are say recovery based, if there is such a class.

  34. sigiqaped March 24th, 2014 at 10:08 am

“who smashes dugout phones and doesn’t even have a position is ludicrous!”

Don’t forget. Ortiz also threw bats at the HP umpire against the Angels in the 2000s.

  35. Cashmoney March 24th, 2014 at 10:09 am

If Ortiz was on the Yankees, he would have been the faces of the YES network and Yankees by now. Millions of Yankee fans would have had cheered and lauded him with and without PED. Now, he happens to be the ‘man’ on a hated rival, but the view on him as a player is so skewed, I think it’s almost delusional.

  36. yankeefeminista March 24th, 2014 at 10:09 am

Good morning! If Dellin doesn’t make the BP outright it sends a message that how you perform doesn’t matter.

In our division, bunch of AL East young pitchers pitching today including Morrow (Jays) and Archer (Rays). So, that interests me, but I am ready for games that count. Speaking of young pitching prospects, I hope Taillon (elbow) is OK; so many young pitcher injuries this ST season. I found this blurb on the Pitt-Trib blog kind of interesting not just about Taillon, pitching (fragility of) and lack of extending contracts to pitchers vs. position players (see Scherzer taking a big risk, but if he succeeds he will make big money) but also the reference to Latin players and the intelligence stereotype factor. And I thought that was just a NY/Lohud thing… :

” Jameson Taillon, the Pirates’ top pitching prospect, was shut down yesterday by a sore elbow — always the reddest of red flags in baseball — and will miss the start of the Triple-A season. Rob Biertempfel reports from Sarasota.

Jeff Locke is set for a step back, by Biertempfel.
If you missed it, Biertempfel broke news Sunday about the Pirates making Starling Marte a multiyear offer. Marte, to his infinite credit, rejected it.

Can’t help but wonder: Would the Pirates ever make Gerrit Cole such an offer? Or would they presume that Scott Boras, unlike Jose Tabata’s agent, isn’t brain-dead? Or will only the Latin American players be approached in such a manner, in hopes that they’re all stupid enough to forfeit arbitration and free-agency years before they’re even remotely established?”

    http://blog.triblive.com/dejan.....-speak-up/

Blah blah blah… Just need to see some live baseball:

10 days until MiLB OD at Trenton. Still waiting to hear what the pitching matchup is.

14 days until Yankees OD in Da Bronx. I am loving the prospect of seeing Tanaka vs. the O’s and Pineda vs. the Sux. (Still smarting from our complicity in aiding their winning the WS. Payback time.) Bring it on!

  37. Cashmoney March 24th, 2014 at 10:12 am

The thing with Robertson vs Mo is that while its true D-Rob will never have the career of Mariano Rivera, it is very easy for him to have a better season than Mo ever did or at the very least equal one of Mo’s best seasons.

Mo’s greatness lied in his consistency at a position that is filled with year to year inconsistency. There were always a handful of closers though that were just as good or better than Mo every year. The thing is the names of those guys just changed year to year because lol relievers.

Mo is gone so we no longer can count on just having one of the best closers every year, but there will always be the chance that we have as good or better.

  65. Chip March 24th, 2014 at 10:41 am

Great analysis by Chad on the roster issues.

I agree that the spring stats of Solarte and Wheeler aren’t enough to warrant cutting someone off the 40 to find a roster spot for either of them for the short term and Scott Sizemore hasn’t done enough to suggest he needs to be added either.

Having so many players playing well enough to earn consideration on the 25 man roster is a great problem to have.

In terms of the pitching staff, I think that if Girardi had his way Pineda would be the 5th starter with Phelps and Warren both in the pen. I find it unlikely that Cashman will go along with that plan and will tell Girardi he can have one of those guys in the pen but that the other has to stay stretched out in Scranton.

No way any of the AAAA types force their way on or bump the vets, 40-man obviously a big factor.

As for DRob, I’ll take 10.45 K/9, 2.44 BB/9 from my closer any day of the week.

    yankeefeminista March 24th, 2014 at 10:41 am

pat, absolutely. I hope he thrives, but Phelps was never a candidate IMO.
    ————————

    I don’t think that’s true.

I like Phelps a lot but the fact is that Pineda (even post surgery) is a better starter than he is and it makes the Yankees better having Pineda in the rotation.

That’s not about upside or projection – it’s about where they are right now in their careers. Phelps is a back end guy and if Pineda had an awful spring and was throwing mid-80s the Yankees would have chosen Phelps for that role. Pineda’s looking like at least a solid 3 right now and if you can have that profile in your 5th starter, then absolutely that’s the right call.

I could see Phelps filling a role as a Ramiro Mendoza type of guy or, capitalizing on this solid spring, using him to fill a need via trade.

  72. yankeefeminista March 24th, 2014 at 10:45 am

should say 40-man obviously a factor, but status quo too integral, plus sss. We will always go with vets too if given the choice. No young guys knocking (except Zoological) and if they were, they wouldn’t get the chance unless someone gets hurt.

Btw, I see that Tyler Austin is again getting some reps at 3B…

  73. sigiqaped March 24th, 2014 at 10:46 am

Phenomenal trade for Baltimore, getting a young 2b (likely to be their starter) for a washed up Alex Gonzalez.

I don’t know what Detroit is thinking there. If the idea was to use Gonzo at SS that doesn’t make sense – Gonzo isn’t a SS any more.

I agree with Pineda being chosen. I just don’t think it was a true competition. And Pineda this year has continued to do what he did last year, so no surprises to me in terms of his ST.

  77. yankeefeminista March 24th, 2014 at 10:49 am

He’ll never equal Rivera’s 1996. He doesn’t pitch enough innings to do it.

Rivera has had four seasons with at least 4.0 WAR according to Baseball Reference. Robertson has had one.

“Pineda was the favorite/a gimme (if he performed) b/c of the upside and I wouldn’t argue with that.

Agree. Him making the cut also validates a front office decision so that works in his benefit too.
    ///

Of course, this is definitely in play. But he should get the job because he’s got the greater upside and they can always reappoint if he starts having issues, like wild fluctuations in velo, or becomes injured, etc. He looks pretty fine about now as a No. 5 in this very deep rotation that has more arms rising up behind the No. 5 spot.

I said this two years ago and was basically railed at as a “hugger” : the one thing the Yankees have in the system is high-end arms, even though they show a flair for turning potential front-end starters into bullpen fodder.

Yankeefem – we have seen where “performance” hasn’t resulted in more PT; Girardi, in particular, has a bizarre habit of giving a guy a “rest” day after he has a hot day at the plate, cooling him off. He also has a zeal for “veterans” and will interfere with a younger player who’s going well, give him just enough idle time to grow cold, throw him in and when he doesn’t deliver, that’s the end of him.

With Betances, I am, on the one hand, all for him moving up the BP “ladder,”; on the other, like who didn’t get that this unique arm, which dominates for five or six innings, would mystify for one or two? IOW, the more “success” he has in the BP, the further and further away he moves from getting a chance (likely, elsewhere) from returning to a starting role and proving he can mow down the same hitter 2 and 3 times in an appearance.

I still see the irony of stripping him of his basically five-pitch arsenal to throw two, or one or two innings, regardless of an inevitable movement to high leverage spots. It’s a waste of a great arm; as I’ve said, it would have been laudatory to have used this time in the BP role to get him to repeat his delivery (for what – a year and change now??) and see if he could take that newfound consistency into a reconversion. That is where the innovation would be. Burawa can do what Betances is doing now, in the zipperless world of short relief.

“Hallelujah, it’s a interest word to enunciate, a quickening intake a breath, a gentle tap of you tongue culminating into a vocal release out to the ether, one can almost say it’s cathartic and redemptive.”

Were you straight when you wrote this? It’s a piece of genius! j/k. :) I really do like it though.

    *****************

I’m liking that we’re down with repetitive stuff.

So let me repeat. There is no double standard when it comes to writing off Arod. We all jig our own way. I cheered on every player who was caught once and admitted to it. That comes under the category of “we all make mistakes.” Anybody who does a national mea culpa and goes on to cheat again? That comes under the category of “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” I’m beyond done with Arod. And the same will obtain for anyone who’s been caught more than once, no matter the team. Now they’re baseball pond scum in my eyes. Just the way it is.

    *****************

And here’s another regarding Ortiz. You all remember my constant repeating about the fenway steroid investigation that was quarter-stepped by MLB? Well, there should be no surprises that David Ortiz continues to rake and his milkshakes are undoubtedly intact.

What remains to be seen is how well he does after Uncle Bud has left the scene.

  85. yankeefeminista March 24th, 2014 at 10:53 am

I don’t think we can afford to get rid of Phelps; he is still more valuable to us. We need more than 5 starters, and he will be needed both in SP and RP. Phelps is better than anyone else we have if one of our top five can’t go.

I thought the Tigers would be all in on Tanaka for this very reason… if they would have acquired him, they could have let Scherzer walk and been just fine. Plus, they could have either benefited from one year where Verlander, Tanaka, and Scherzer were in their rotation OR traded Scherzer for another piece.

I was pretty surprised they didn’t go hard after him.

“on the other, like who didn’t get that this unique arm, which dominates for five or six innings, would mystify for one or two?”

Yeah, Dellin was always going to succeed in the pen. (knock on wood) Have to laugh at the heightened fear of the BB rates even after Betances converted two years ago down the stretch at AAA and in AFL in game situations once he didn’t have to repeat so often and had simplified and was pitching from the stretch. Stuff converts, why wouldn’t it? Always thought the comparisons to Brackman were hilarious because they are such different pitchers, but whatever. Let’s keep it going now. Love the arms we have. Makes the season fun even if we have no position players under 30. That will have to change at some point.

Even if you want to base the decision solely on their performances this spring, Pineda still wins:

    Phelps: 2.75 ERA 19.2 IP, 14 K 1.17 WHIP
    Pineda: 1.20 ERA 15 IP, 16 K, 1.00 WHIP

I wouldn’t say that by naming Pineda 5th starter the Yankees would be handing the job to someone who didn’t earn it this spring.

To me, having both Pineda and Tanaka in the rotation out of the gate, puts a strain on the bullpen. The beginning of the Yankee schedule does not favor having to work around SP’s like Pineda and Tanaka who are adjusting physically to the 5 day rotation. This puts a strain on the bullpen, which would be avoided by starting Phelps and bullpenning Pineda to Begin the season.

  110. Cashmoney March 24th, 2014 at 11:10 am

Donnie, Pineda earned it fair and square. It’s a different issue whether you feel if his shoulder would fall off or his stuff may not play once the season starts… I have my logical doubts in both areas. The best way to prove it one way or another is for him to start.

They should be going with 6 starters for the first 3 weeks, but Pineda won the spot and is the better choice.

  114. Doreen March 24th, 2014 at 11:47 am

I wish they wouldn’t term these things as competitions. But it is sports, so, what can you do. I’d agree that the Yankees had set it up in their minds that it was Pineda’s spot to lose, rather than Phelps’ to win.

Is that a competition? A true competition? No.

In this case (and I believe that in that other case in the past -ahem- the Yankees had a clear choice for who they wanted to start, but that the pitcher they envisioned as the non-starter was a guy they knew could step in at a later date). It’s not a bad position to be in. It is an interesting situation though if as a fan you’re rooting for one or the other to be the starter.

The other thing is they make a big deal of not letting the guy they have quietly pre-chosen feel as if he’s got the spot no matter what. They want to see the work. No assumptions on the part of the players. Is this good? Does it have value? Does it ultimately make a difference?
