Dellin Betances and Vidal Nuno have won the final two spots in the Yankees bullpen.

No announcement yet on the two open infield spots.

Michael Pineda will stay behind in Tampa to pitch in a minor league game on Sunday, then he will join the team in Houston and start in Toronto.

Alfredo Aceves has also been signed to a minor league deal. He will be in the Triple-A rotation.

    Go Dell!

  2. CountryClub March 28th, 2014 at 4:44 pm

Besides the more advanced tests being implemented, I think the biggest thing to come out of it is the 4 extra blood tests per yr for anyone that gets caught.

  3. J. Alfred Prufrock March 28th, 2014 at 4:45 pm

Congrats, baby! Long live the arm of Dellin Betances: bullpen and beyond! :D

  4. blake March 28th, 2014 at 4:45 pm

not wild about Nuno in the pen but this is probably the best group of pitchers to take if we are just talking about taking the best

  5. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 4:45 pm

    Bueno.

    Good decision IMO.

Next surprise me and take Solarte over Anna.

    ;)

I’d much rather have Anna (even over Nunez), but I won’t complain either way.

  8. yankee21 March 28th, 2014 at 4:48 pm

Curious why no announcement yet regarding the b/u IFs, who knows maybe a trade or acquisition is in the works?

    CC-

You are getting that wish IMO.

    Nunez is going north.

Real question is Anna vs. Solarte.

Anna has the edge because he is on the 40.

If not I’d bet Solarte would edge him out.

  12. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 4:50 pm

@MadDogUnleashed: Anyone who tells me that Mike Trout is better, right now, then Miguel Cabrera, I’m talking to you @MrBrianKenny- needs their head examined.

Yes…..they might both go for now because they are on the 40 man and Ryan is hurt

  15. CountryClub March 28th, 2014 at 4:53 pm

    MTU,

I like Anna. I’d take him over any of the other backups (except maybe Sizemore if he was healthy). But it wont be a big deal either way. Those guys won’t be playing much…especially early in the year.

  16. Jerkface March 28th, 2014 at 4:53 pm

Players who test positive and serve their full sentence being ineligible for the postseason is really dumb. The game needs less restriction on medical technology, not more. Bad move by MLB and MLBPA.

  17. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 4:54 pm

    Anna is a teacher’s pet.

Yankees like his D and high OBP. Also his demeanor.

Personally, I think Solarte is the better player.

    But it’s cool.

    They are both good.

  18. blake March 28th, 2014 at 4:54 pm

So is that whole 25 games for an accidental positive test no happening ?

  19. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Solarte can play more positions than Anna and is also a switch hitter.

  20. Mottsx March 28th, 2014 at 4:57 pm

They should trade Nunie to an NL team. He would be a great Pinch hitter.

  21. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 4:58 pm

Murphy and Romine at AAA ?

They split the duty equally, or is it performance based ?

  22. Ys Guy March 28th, 2014 at 4:59 pm

blake thats teh part about the arbitrator being allowed to halve the penalty if the player can convince him that the violation was not in an effort to boost performance.

Game 6 of ’77 series now starting on ESPN CL

  28. Patrick March 28th, 2014 at 5:06 pm

I prefer Cabral over Nuno but Nuno is a safer pick. I love that Betances is on the team, he could be pretty special out of the pen

  29. Patrick March 28th, 2014 at 5:09 pm

“A first-time performance-enhancing substance violation of the Joint Drug Program will now result in an unpaid 80-game suspension, increased from 50 games. A player’s second violation will result in an unpaid 162-game suspension (and a loss of 183 days of pay), increased from 100 games. A third violation will result in a permanent suspension from Baseball.”

Why even specify this? Baseball has already shown they don’t pay attention to the rules when assigning suspensions.

  30. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:10 pm

I don’t care for Cabral as he walks too many guys.

Kind of scary in a reliever.

  31. blake March 28th, 2014 at 5:11 pm

“Why even specify this? Baseball has already shown they don’t pay attention to the rules when assigning suspensions.

They do when there is a failed drug test which is what this is talking about…..they really need to set some protocol for circumstantial type evidence

  32. tomingeorgia March 28th, 2014 at 5:11 pm

No listing for TV tonight. Am I missing something?

  33. Jerkface March 28th, 2014 at 5:12 pm

I really dislike all 3 6 starter candidates being in the pen. The Yankees have proven that they do not deal with long relievers well/efficiently in terms of managing innings and appearances and 2 of the 3 guys (Phelps/Nuno) I think have pretty legit upside as major league starters (average though the ceilings may be). Those are the guys you use in your rotation or trade.

    Super psyched about Betances though.

  34. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:13 pm

It’s on YES as far as I know Tom.

    YAY on Vidal Nuno!!!!!!!!

    :)

I hope he somehow stays stretched out, and I hope he’s happy. I know that he’s pretty firm on wanting to end up a starter.

  37. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:17 pm

Like it or not I think Phelps, Warren, and Nuno are all victims of their own success.

That said, I do not have as much concern as some about the idea of keeping them stretched out in case of need.

It is a fairly straightforward matter to stretch a guy back out if he is needed.

While that is happening you have enough guys to piggy back any 2 of them.

Tempest in a teapot as far as I’m concerned.

  38. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 28th, 2014 at 5:17 pm

Now if by some miracle Zelous Wheeler makes the team, I’ll really be jumping for joy.

  39. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:18 pm

    I stand corrected.

    Thanks JF.

    Bummer.

  40. tomingeorgia March 28th, 2014 at 5:18 pm

    MTU,
    Not listed on MLB.TV, though.

  41. kd March 28th, 2014 at 5:19 pm

my guess is that they want phelps, warren and nuno on the bug league roster as they will try to trade one or two of them for a middle infielder at the deadline

  42. Jerkface March 28th, 2014 at 5:19 pm

There is a real good chance that Nuno is better than Thornton as a lefty and they end up keeping him in the bullpen. That would suck.

  43. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 28th, 2014 at 5:19 pm

By the way, I absolutely know that I must be getting played by some posters on the prediction chart. It annoys me because I may be paying out multiple candy to the same person, and that strikes me as pretty unfair to me.

The problem is that I have no way of knowing for sure who the multiples are. As someone who has been falsely accused in the past, I can’t afford to do the same thing to someone else.

    :(

  44. Patrick March 28th, 2014 at 5:19 pm

Like it or not I think Phelps, Warren, and Nuno are all victims of their own success.

I think they would much rather be in the big league bullpen than starting in AAA. It’s not ideal, sure, but pitching in the big leagues in any capacity has got to be better than AAA

  45. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:20 pm

It’s on MLB Network if you happen to have it.

  46. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:22 pm

    Patrick-

I agree with you on that point.

I actually have no problem with those guys being in the pen.

    Lot’s of other people do.

I just meant that if they weren’t so versatile they wouldn’t even be BP options.

    I like it though.

    ;)

  47. Jerkface March 28th, 2014 at 5:24 pm

I think they would much rather be in the big league bullpen than starting in AAA. It’s not ideal, sure, but pitching in the big leagues in any capacity has got to be better than AAA

Anyone would prefer to be in the major leagues than the minors. You only make like 10x as much in salary while getting all the benefits of being a major league baseball player. What the player thinks is better is not necessarily what is better for the team.

  48. tomingeorgia March 28th, 2014 at 5:24 pm

    MLB Network has Mets-Blue Jays.

  49. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:24 pm

Even if I were fortune enough to have guessed correctly I likely wouldn’t accept your generous gift.

The fact that Team was as good as my prediction would be reward enough for me.

    :)

  50. Patrick March 28th, 2014 at 5:26 pm

What the player thinks is better is not necessarily what is better for the team.

I never said it was …

Just saying, I doubt the players feel like “victims of their own success” they are probably super stoked. Not making any comment on whether its the right choice for the team or not (not).

  51. austinmac March 28th, 2014 at 5:26 pm

Congrats to Betances and Nuno. They have had some tough times. I bet they are smiling tonight.

  52. Jerkface March 28th, 2014 at 5:26 pm

No TV station is carrying the game tonight, MTU. You need a TV station to broadcast it for the game to be on mlb.tv or mlb network.

  53. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:26 pm

Alfredo Aceves has signed a minor-league deal with the #Yankees.

Everyones favorite jerk is back. can’t say I like this move. I used to be all for assembling the best guys regardless of personality/action outside the field, but the stories about aceves were pretty bad

  60. blake March 28th, 2014 at 5:34 pm

I don’t watch the games much at this point in the spring anyway…..pretty much I’m only watching if Tanaka, Pineda, or Betances is pitching

  61. blake March 28th, 2014 at 5:35 pm

Aceves can stay in the minors…..don’t want him back at all….

  62. Jerkface March 28th, 2014 at 5:35 pm

SAS – of course I remember you! I especially miss Mel. She was such an objective and fair poster and always upbeat. She got sniped at a few times and never returned. Not sure if that’s the reason, but I always thought it may have been. It happened around the time last year when there was rampant negativity here.

    **************

“Last year, most said the pre-season predictions of not making the playoffs was a ridiculous notion. Well, they are saying it again.”

Really. Go back and see what they said about the Sux in 2011. I don’t think they’re antiYankee. I just think they’re getting it wrong.

And who are the they? (not that it matters, but I’m just curious.)

    ****************

“Johnson’s team leading five errors are not encouraging. He might get better, but he was never considered a very good glove at his familiar positions. Add that to the infield issues.

    Penney wise, pound foolish.”

As far as the Yankees know, they are without a 3B for this season. They supposedly have one coming back next season. Ridiculous to go out and get a heavy hitter for a season. If there were good one-year options, I don’t know. You have to think of more than just what you want to see on the field. JMO

    *****************

    massjake – you’re down for 95 wins.

  74. blake March 28th, 2014 at 5:42 pm

I love the first couple of weeks of ST…..after that it’s beyond boring. Basically after all the prospects I want to see are gone and I’ve seen the new guys I’m over it…..

  75. Jerkface March 28th, 2014 at 5:42 pm

I guess they are planning on Aceves being the 6th starter at Scranton

This is the thing with Yankee rotation options starting in the pen. They tend to get overlooked for actual starts and guys from the minor leagues come up and take them…

I hope Nuno eventually goes back to the rotation but that will require thornton being good.

  76. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 5:42 pm

I too am not happy Aceves is back in the org.

  77. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 28th, 2014 at 5:44 pm

MTU – if you win, I’ll walk yours to you if you don’t take them!!!

Karma will take care of the less-than-honorable. As for me, a deal is a deal. Someone predicts and wins, candy on it’s way.

    :)

And for reasons I’m sure Shame will understand, I’m hoping for 102 wins. :D

  85. bigdan22 March 28th, 2014 at 5:47 pm

Before I saw the Aceves note I was going to say this:

So if a starter goes down for a bit in mid to late April, who takes his place? At that point the three guys may have only pitched a couple times each, if that, for 5-6 innings total. There’s really nobody in AAA you’d pick. There’s Greene but he’s not ready. And Whitley I guess but you wouldn’t want him. They are really short for starters down there. I think Girardi would try to “piece it together” with the bullpen but that just ends up creating a new problem. What started as just a starting pitcher need is now a tired bullpen as well.

But now there’s Aceves. Maybe he’s the answer. Does anyone know if he’s been used as a starter this spring?

  86. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 28th, 2014 at 5:47 pm

MTU – you are a sweetie and I think you would definitely appreciate some of the Ritter taste delights. So I hope you win! And if you keep being so nice, I might have to send you some regardless.

    :)

  87. Jerkface March 28th, 2014 at 5:48 pm

Why are the Yankees not starting the season with everyone else on monday? That annoys me so bad. I can’t wait to watch this season. While I do prefer the Yankees having a locked in team of badasses, this team has a lot of questions and I am ready for the answers.

I wonder what came first? Nuno making the team in the bullpen or Aceves being signed? Maybe this was all planned.

  93. ac1 March 28th, 2014 at 5:53 pm

Yankees have no shortage of guys that can go into the rotation.
The 5 plus Phelps, Nuno and Warren? (Yes it would take a little to build their innings), and now Aceves.

  94. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 28th, 2014 at 5:54 pm

Ever have one of those days where you look at the clock at it’s 5:53 and you realize that you have yet to put a morsel in your mouth? I had one of those days and just realized that I am hungry!

    Check you all out later.

  95. ac1 March 28th, 2014 at 5:55 pm

But now there’s Aceves. Maybe he’s the answer. Does anyone know if he’s been used as a starter this spring?

i think he would go 3-3-3 or 2-2-2 with Phelps-Warren-Nuno if he had to. Depending on how many pitches they throw.

  96. austinmac March 28th, 2014 at 5:55 pm

Yankees are signing Aceves? That’s a surprise.

Aceves is versatile. I like the move.
    Can’t have enough…

  100. Patrick March 28th, 2014 at 6:12 pm

Yeah I kind of don’t want Aceves on the team. He seems like a pretty big jerk. The Red Sox suspended him at one point basically because he was being such a dbag. Maybe he’s been humbled a bit after spending most of last year in AAA, but I doubt it

  101. Patrick March 28th, 2014 at 6:13 pm

Aceves wears 91 because he admires Dennis Rodman … draw your own conclusions.

  102. raymagnetic March 28th, 2014 at 6:16 pm

I don’t care if he’s a jerk if he can pitch lights out.

  103. mick March 28th, 2014 at 6:16 pm

    Bryan Hoch ? @BryanHoch

It’s possible the Yankees are making a 40-man roster move to accommodate Yangervis Solarte, which may be delaying infield decision.

Ryan will be out a while.
Without a trade who could they release from the 40 man?

  105. mick March 28th, 2014 at 6:18 pm

Big Al will be around to add his insight on Aceves.

  106. Shame Spencer March 28th, 2014 at 6:19 pm

Is there a poster on here that knows Aceves’ wife (the one he beat the hell out of on the regular)? I’m actually grossed out they added him – I never wanna hear another word about this team shying away from players with character issues, minor league deal or not.

  107. Shame Spencer March 28th, 2014 at 6:20 pm

Someone def updated us on awful Aceves drunk and beating women stories but I can’t remember who..

  108. mick March 28th, 2014 at 6:20 pm

with a pen of DRob, Kelley, Thornton, Phelps, Nuno, Betances and Warren we are deep.

  109. Shame Spencer March 28th, 2014 at 6:21 pm

    Isn’t*

  110. Joe from Long Island March 28th, 2014 at 6:23 pm

I can only hope the wife beating allegation is not true. I know it’s a business predicated on performance, and just on the business aspect it’s an ok move, but that’s not the character I want on my team. I thought cash was looking for good team players and characters. I wonder what the behind the scenes deal is.

  111. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 6:23 pm

    We have deep depth.

    :)

  112. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 6:26 pm

I can’t believe I have to miss the “Typhoon Twins”.

    I’m blown away.

    :)

  113. Shame Spencer March 28th, 2014 at 6:26 pm

Joe – By too many accounts, Aceves appears to have a drinking problem along with a keeping his hands to himself problem, sadly.

Someone on here must remember what Lohud poster had a personal connection to him… If you’re being told to sit down by the Sox org, though, you must be a real tool. That might be proof enough.

  114. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 6:29 pm

    Shame-

Send one of those special Dolphins after him.

    ;)

  115. Joe from Long Island March 28th, 2014 at 6:29 pm

Shame – I have to agree with you. I’m just grasping for some logic here, something that makes sense to me.

Have a good evening. Let’s go Yankees.

  116. bigdan22 March 28th, 2014 at 6:31 pm

They must really love Solarte if they are looking to open a roster spot for him now. I’m not sure Ryan’s injury is driving this. It’s not like they’d lose Solarte if they don’t add him now and they still could have Nunie and Anna on the 25 to back up Jeter.

As far as a release, I’d say maybe Claiborne? Maybe he’d sneak through. They’ve got others who could replace him like Daly.

Maybe a 60 day for Turley or Ramirez?

    Maybe Nunie gets traded?

  117. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 6:32 pm

There is a lot to like about Solarte.

  118. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 6:33 pm

    It’s either Anna or Solarte.

I still think Anna has the inside track.

  119. Shame Spencer March 28th, 2014 at 6:33 pm

If I had a dolphin with a laser this wouldn’t even be an issue… *Zap!* *Blam!*

  120. MTU March 28th, 2014 at 6:35 pm

    Shame-

Perhaps DARPA will lend you one of there new Predator drones ?

I think they are better than the Dolphins just not as cute.

    ;)

  121. Giuseppe Franco March 28th, 2014 at 6:35 pm

It was Big Al who had the connection with Aceves.

It’s exciting to see a young kid like Betances turn the corner and really start to blossom before our very eyes.

I just wished the organization had a lot more of them.

  122. jmills March 28th, 2014 at 6:40 pm

I imagine there’s a sad # of female dominating male control freaks in the sports world. Young guys with money built up to ridiculous extremes who have very little in the way of personal development. Societal problem really where the guy is supposed to lead and conquer. I was married common law with an English warrior. We still laugh, men will come up to her thinking they have some kind of chance, and we both know they’d last 5 seconds. We’re not together anymore, but that doesn’t stop me from building her up as the strongest person I’ve ever come across.

  123. pete2 March 28th, 2014 at 6:41 pm

Not sure Aceves has anything left after the Bobby V experience where he used to throw 3 IP as closer.

As for the testing agreement, sounds like Clark did not get much in return but maybe that’s not been reported . I still think the testing program is still pretty much a sham which is why players don’t mind it so much. When was the last player of significance caught via testing? Most of them seem to be limited to nobodies or players who are impending free agents that suppresses their value, and they likely just got caught because they did not follow instructions on using the drugs.

Even Arod for all his crimes never tested positive.

I think most players do most of their heavy using in the offseason when they have 7 days to report for a test. Those muscles don’t go away overnight, and HGH is a great fat burner, and that fat takes awhile to come back.

Glad to see them removing DHEA from the approved list, that never made sense except to help the soybean farmers in Wisconsin, Buds home state.

  124. mick March 28th, 2014 at 6:45 pm

    Solarte also plays the OF.
I don’t know why they keep Ryan.
    Trade Anna.

  125. mick March 28th, 2014 at 6:45 pm

    To the Mets.

  126. jmills March 28th, 2014 at 6:45 pm

btw, my former partner is a CEO with an honours in philosophy – killer combination! Big Hamlet fan too :D

  127. mick March 28th, 2014 at 6:47 pm

So players who have been caught once already get a year and those nabbed twice get life?

  130. RadioKev March 28th, 2014 at 6:51 pm

I agree with you Jerkface, Nuno in the pen just isn’t an efficient use of resources. Who’s our 6th starter now? Heck, what about a seventh? Should have taken Cabral or Daley. Still, I’m not upset about it, I just don’t think it’s smart.

But Betances, yeah, finally. Good for him :D

  131. jmills March 28th, 2014 at 6:53 pm

mick, give it la chance, it goes back to ’85 for gawd’s sake :D

  132. jmills March 28th, 2014 at 6:58 pm

I might be wrong, but I recall hearing you have to be an idiot to get caught postive. There are only certain times when they can test and it is easy to load up appropriately while testing clen. NASCAR probably has tougher guidelines.

  133. pete2 March 28th, 2014 at 7:02 pm

The Yankees basically have 3 – 6th starters in the bullpen. Joe just has to keep one of them stretched out with long relief. Aceves could be an emergency 6th starter if they have him start in Scranton, or they just go with a few guys from the pen throwing multiple innings, which is not ideal since it taxes the pen. If some from the rotation is to miss an extended period, a month of more, it only takes about 10 days to get them stretched out enough to go 5 IP.

I think the bigger concern is the Yankees tend to abuse their pen at times and the risk is the depth gets used up and hurt and is not available when needed

  134. mick March 28th, 2014 at 7:04 pm

mills i recommend Box of Moonlight with John Turtoro and Sam Rockwell, Catherine Keener

  135. raymagnetic March 28th, 2014 at 7:05 pm

    Shame,

Where’s the proof that Aceves beat his wife? DNS I don’t mean some random guy posting anonymously on a lohud blog.

  136. mick March 28th, 2014 at 7:06 pm

why not try nuno in the pen, who knows what thornton will provide.

aceves takes nunos place in the minors as a potential starter here or in relief.

    can’t have enough…

  137. mick March 28th, 2014 at 7:12 pm
