Derek Jeter, Masahiro Tanaka

Late bus for players this morning, and it’s a typically light Sunday morning here at Rogers Centre. So, might as well look ahead really quickly. Here’s the schedule of events for tomorrow’s home opener.

9:45 a.m. Joe Girardi press conference
10:00 a.m. Derek Jeter press conference
10:20-11:20 a.m. Yankees hit
11:00 a.m. Gates open to ticket holders
11:20 a.m.-12:10 p.m. Orioles hit
12:44-12:54 p.m. Baseline introductions
12:54 p.m. Unfurling of giant American flag by West Point Cadets
12:55 p.m. Presentation of Colors: West Point Cadet Color Guard
12:56 p.m. National Anthem: Kelli O’Hara
1:03 p.m. Umpires and Managers to Home Plate
1:06 p.m. Yankees take the field; ceremonial first pitches thrown by Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera and caught by Derek
Jeter and Jorge Posada
1:08 p.m. First Pitch

Beltran· Today is Carlos Beltran’s turn to get a day off, that’s pushed Jacoby Ellsbury into the No. 3 spot in the order. I suppose that’s the perk of essentially having two leadoff hitters. Now that Mark Teixeira is hurt, Brett Gardner can move to the top and Ellsbury can move to the middle.

· Starting pitchers never talk to the media pregame, but here’s what CC Sabathia said after his letdown on Opening Day: “I’m definitely not going to pitch like I did tonight in the first two innings. I know I can pitch and I know I can get guys out. I feel great. I’m not going to beat myself up about this.”

· Yangervis Solarte is back at third base, and all indications are that he’ll be the regular guy while Kelly Johnson is handling third base.

· The Yankees lineup:
Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Brian McCann C
Alfonso Soriano DH
Kelly Johnson 1B
Brian Roberts 2B
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Yangervis Solarte 3B

Not a single batter on this roster can be called a “feared” hitter.

The SP will be good, the BP above average, but, the “O” will come up short, and that will be the story at seasons end.

I expect the hitters to get on track, but again, this is a team with a seroius lack of power.

I could see Pettitte in Houston for the Jeter Ceremony but now he shows up in Toronto? I wonder if he is missing baseball so much that he is thinking of joining the team in the second half of the season if we need help. It will be interesting to see if he shows up in any other cities

I Think Soriano Might Get Going If He’s More Involved In The Game.

Let’s see if the bottom of the lineup can be hot again today.

  11. Tar April 6th, 2014 at 12:54 pm

That’s fair and maybe true. He really needs something to get him going. I heard one of the announcers say Sori actually had better numbers as a DH. Not sure of the sample size though.

  12. bbb51 April 6th, 2014 at 12:57 pm

Soriano only has 136 pa as a DH, and probably most of those were when he was in the AL, which was last 9 years ago.

  13. bbb51 April 6th, 2014 at 12:58 pm

53 pa last year as dh Sori had .580 ops…

The newly powerful Astros have been out scored 16-3 by the Angels.

Three outfielders who may not hit the amount of home runs that one Yankee outfielder would hit in a season. Will this work in YS?

  16. BIG AL April 6th, 2014 at 1:13 pm

    jmills -

You don’t go to the games?

  17. Giuseppe Franco April 6th, 2014 at 1:14 pm

Soriano has been notoriously streaky his entire career. His hot and cold spells tend to last awhile.

The Yanks were just fortunate they got him last season at the right time.
