Umpires: Todd Tichenor HP, Tim Welke 1B, Will Little 2B, Tim Timmons 3B

Weather: Cloudy, comfortable, 64 degrees

TV/Radio: YES/WFAN 660 AM and 101.9 FM

In control: The Yankees starting pitchers haven’t walked a single batter in the last four games. That’s Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda. This is the team’s first four-game streak of this nature since August 2011. It covers 25 1/3 innings. The starters have struck out 23 in that span.

Spelling relief: The Yankees’ relievers have held batters to a .121 average so far, the best work in the majors in that category. Their ERA is 2.12 and they’re 3 for 3 in saves.

Update, 1:15: Yankees down 3-0 after four batters, two singles, a sac fly and a two-run homer by Jones. Jeter’s range didn’t look too good on one of the singles. Nova doesn’t look too good, either.

Update, 1:26: Beltran gets one back for the Yankees, third RBI of the season, double past third to drive in Ellsbury after a two-out single, 3-1 Orioles.

Update, 1:35: Nova picks off Lombardozzi at second after a single and a bunt single when Nova and Roberts couldn’t get to first in time to take a throw from Cervelli.

Update, 1:39: Orioles cash in anyway, RBI double for Schoop, 4-1.

Update, 1:51: Chen has a 1-2-3 second.

Update, 1:58: Nova finally has a 1-2-3 inning. Got Jones on a drive to the track in center.

Update, 2:07: Ellsbury continues to hit, now 2 for 2 with both of them singles, first and third, two outs in the third.

Update, 2:08: Beltran pops to the shortstop Flaherty in shallow left-center. 4-1 after three. The Yankees still have just one homer this season, by Gardner.

Update, 2:16: Nova in trouble again, three straight singles to load the bases with one out.

Update, 2:18: Sac fly for Markakis. RBI single for Young. It’s 6-1 and Nova is done after allowing 10 hits in 3 2/3. Cabral comes on.

Update, 2:24: Infield hit for Davis, 7-1.

Update, 2:31: Yankees now have two homers this season, Soriano solo shot to left.

Update, 2:40: Solarte continues to hit, now seven RBI after a run-scoring double makes it 7-3 here in the fourth.

Update, 2:42: RBI grounder for Gardner, 7-4.

Update, 2:47: Nuno comes on for the fifth. Nova, by the way, had his 24-start streak snapped of allowing four earned runs or less, dating to 2012. He didn’t really pitch well in either start so far.

Update, 3:04: McCann strands Ellsbury at third to end the fifth. Ellsbury is 3 for 3 and 12 for 28, plus 4 for 5 on steals.

Update, 3:10: Nuno serves up a two-run HR to Delmon Young, 9-4 Orioles here in the sixth.

Update, 3:16: The Orioles have reached Nuno for four runs this inning, now 11-4. Baltimore has 15 hits.

Update, 3:18: Josh Stinson takes over the pitching for the Orioles.

Update, 3:27: Solarte delivers another double. He’s 2 for 3 today and 11 for 23 with seven RBI in seven games. Six of the hits are doubles.

Update, 3:54: Wieters two-run homer off Nuno, 13-4 in the eighth.

Update, 3:57: Nuno out, Betances in.

Update, 4:00: Orioles now have 20 hits, RBI single for Lombardozzi, 14-4.

Update, 4:08: Two fans ran out on to the field and were tackled. They’ll love jail, I’m sure.

Update, 4:13: Kelly Johnson first HR as a Yankee. It’s only a nine-run spread now in the eighth.

Update, 4:36: Yankees lose 14-5.

    Go Vato! Go Yanks!

  2. luis April 8th, 2014 at 1:09 pm

    Go Vato, Go Yankees!!

Hi YF!..Got your e-mail..I haven’t been able to respond

  3. NYY_Girl_Penny April 8th, 2014 at 1:11 pm

wow if Jeter can’t get to balls like that this year, forget it.

  4. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:11 pm

That was a perfect DP ball. Jeter looked like he was standing in cement.

  5. kd April 8th, 2014 at 1:11 pm

    Super Nova time.

The rotation will have to carry the yankees this year. If Nova pitches like he has been, they should really consider offering him a long term deal. He’s a rare commodity, home grown and cost controlled. He could make really big money as a free agent

  6. tomingeorgia April 8th, 2014 at 1:12 pm

    Hey, luis!

    Go Yanks!

  7. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:13 pm

That was a real mistake pitch…right down broadway.

  8. Benny Blanco April 8th, 2014 at 1:13 pm

    Ouch!!!!!

  9. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:13 pm

Whoa….infield D doesn’t matter? Nova should have 2 outs and nobody on right now and instead it’s 1st and 3rd with no outs and they scored a run.

Love the cap but that has to be a DP in the big leagues

  10. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:13 pm

This is Nova. Either very good or awful.

  11. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:14 pm

Not sure what happened there….Jeter has been moving much better than that this year

  12. tomingeorgia April 8th, 2014 at 1:14 pm

    Over the 408 sign. Sheesh.

  13. luis April 8th, 2014 at 1:14 pm

Hey Tom! Good to see you

It seems that Nova is nt pitching well…I am not able to watch because of lack of bandwydth :( So I am following it with gameday

The Yankees should be batting right now with no runs allowed…..this isn’t on nova

  15. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:15 pm

Infield D doesn’t matter right? Just cost them 3 runs and they are all earned

  16. Jerkface April 8th, 2014 at 1:15 pm

With even average infield defense the Yankees would have been out of this inning with 0 runs given up

  17. Hassey April 8th, 2014 at 1:16 pm

at least we wont miss Robertson today

  18. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:16 pm

We will have to get used to the fact that any ball hit to SS this year is a hit unless it’s right at Jeter. I love him but he shouldn’t be playing SS anymore.

  19. NYY_Girl_Penny April 8th, 2014 at 1:17 pm

Looks like Jeter made a pain face when he went for that ball his spikes were stuck.

  20. exiledintampa April 8th, 2014 at 1:17 pm

If Jeter fields a routine groundball, Adam Jones never comes up to bat. Terrible.

  21. tomingeorgia April 8th, 2014 at 1:18 pm

Finally, the hard hook for a K. He’ll settle down.
Let’s get a few hits this inning,

  22. SweetSpot April 8th, 2014 at 1:18 pm

Consistency has always been Nova’s primary challenge. He’s going to have to locate better than that.

He’s been better than that…..I don’t know if he didn’t see it or what but he didn’t even move until the ball was almost to him

  24. Mike in Harrisburg April 8th, 2014 at 1:19 pm

Benched Jones and started Nova in my fantasy league. This is all my fault.

  25. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:19 pm

Hey luis, sorry I was focusing on Vato. Just came back in now. Good to hear from you; I was getting worried.

Sinker looks good. Could have had the DP there. But 4 seamer’s been up. Hope the CB is working better during this game.

  26. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:20 pm

You give good offenses 4 outs they are going to score……

  27. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Luis, is internet slow from now on? Jeet could have had the DP possibly, ball went under his glove, but Nova has to bare down thereafter. Sinker looks good though.

  28. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:22 pm

    He’s been better than that…..
    ———-

Agree. He has looked ok so far this year. If he didn’t see it fine it happens but otherwise that ball has to be fielded in the major leagues.

  29. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:22 pm

    Go Jeet!

  30. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:23 pm

    Darn. Hit it good.

  31. tomingeorgia April 8th, 2014 at 1:24 pm

    yankeefem,
He’ll be fine if he hits that way all season.

  32. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:24 pm

Also where is the crowd today? Did anyone notice that yesterday in a 2 run game in the 8th inning most of the fans were gone? Just terrible.

  33. Benny Blanco April 8th, 2014 at 1:25 pm

    Jacoby can hit, period!

  34. SweetSpot April 8th, 2014 at 1:25 pm

Ellsbury is just flat out a superb major-league ballplayer.

  35. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:25 pm

This day isn’t being kind to Derek so far

  36. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:25 pm

    Go Beltran!

  37. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:25 pm

tom, agree. Not at all concerned about the bat, and think we’ll scores runs today.

It might just have been hit harder than it looked.

It’s way too soon to make any pronouncements on Jeter’s defense.

  39. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:26 pm

    Like that. Atta boy, Beltran!

  40. michaellord6 April 8th, 2014 at 1:26 pm

    Come on Sori!

  41. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:26 pm

Ellsbury is a very good player when he is healthy. Just have to hope that he stays healthy.

  42. Tackelberry April 8th, 2014 at 1:26 pm

I guess Ellsbury’s calf is ok, the way he ran around the bases.

  43. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:27 pm

Thought he didn’t have the glove down low enough to field it vs. not being there, but would have to see a replay.

  44. RespectTheGame April 8th, 2014 at 1:27 pm

    Exiled:

You obviously need more chapel time; certainly St. Jetersburg is nearby, right?-;)

Or watch the game on YES, the worship service is carrying over from yesterday.

    lol

  45. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:27 pm

Time for Sori to start pulling weight.

  46. SweetSpot April 8th, 2014 at 1:27 pm

Look at all the tools that Ellsbury has displayed in less than an inning. Excellent arm, hitting and speed on the base paths. Great signing.

  47. tomingeorgia April 8th, 2014 at 1:27 pm

    Carlos,
I wanted you ten years ago.

  48. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 8th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

Late to the party but I just want to say

    GO YANKS!!!

    GO IVAN!!!

    ***********

“Also where is the crowd today? Did anyone notice that yesterday in a 2 run game in the 8th inning most of the fans were gone? Just terrible.”

CC can’t be sure but since the Yankees have now offered so many off-the-field venues where fans can go for shelter, a little bit of heat or a little bit of cold might cause a lot of them to watch from the concourse or some of the other shelters. There are television screens everywhere.

  49. michaellord6 April 8th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

I’m thinking more and more than Soriano should never bat higher than 7th in the order.

  50. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

“It’s way too soon to make any pronouncements on Jeter’s defense.”

Not really…..it’s below average for a big league SS at this point…..but he usually makes that play and his D is still usually not a problem in general…..it just really cost them there…..

  51. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

    I hate that swing.

  52. Tackelberry April 8th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

Just need Nova to settle down now.

Beltran hitting is really important for this club

  55. NYY_Girl_Penny April 8th, 2014 at 1:29 pm

Ellsbury is my new favorite “NEW” yankee. No wait, Beltran is, no wait Solarte is.. no wait Tanaka is, no wait .. nevermind !

Love Ellsbury in 3spot and Beltran in 4th.

  56. luis April 8th, 2014 at 1:29 pm

Well we scored one run…Hopefully Nova settles in a gives us some much needed length.

    YF,

    I don”t know…But right now I can”t watch :(

  57. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:30 pm

I love Ellsbury, Beltran and McCann back to back. They have a chance to be a dynamic middle of the order. I would leave Ellsbury batting 3rd even when Tex comes back and bat Tex 6th. He is a rally killer along with Soriano.

  58. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:30 pm

If you are talking about attendance; the numbers they give are paid attendance, not turnstile. With the cold, (potentially) rainy weather, there were many no shows. April is always like that. Bet there will be a fair number of empty seats for the Sux too.

  59. NYY_Girl_Penny April 8th, 2014 at 1:30 pm

If Soriano goes 0 for today, you beed to play Ichiro period!

  60. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 8th, 2014 at 1:31 pm

“Time for Sori to start pulling weight.”

YF, Sori went 2 for 3 yesterday. He’s definitely making contact with the ball more so I think we should be seeing better from him.

By the way, I thought of you Sunday. Dinner was Casserta, and Pastiche for dessert (both taken out).

    :)

  61. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:31 pm

Nova holds them there then yanks win…..

Jeter’s older, in his last year, he’s a first ballot Hall of Famer and all-time Yankee great. What do you want to do bench him because he doesn’t get to every ball that a 22-year-old would?

Hey Bojo! Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing Cervy trying to block first base:)

RTG – I used to go to Davis Island all the time. I’ve seen Jetersburg from the street. I love Jeter like any true Yankee fan does but, C’mon that was a playable ball. And that’s the fourth or fifth this season that’s gotten by him that I’ve questioned.

  68. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:32 pm

Missed first batter; how’s he get on?

luis, :( So what does and doesn’t work? Can you skype? I still have to figure that out for you.

“Jeter’s older, in his last year, he’s a first ballot Hall of Famer and all-time Yankee great. What do you want to do bench him because he doesn’t get to every ball that a 22-year-old would?”

    Of course not…..

  74. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:34 pm

I see on gameday that Lombardozzi’s single was on a curveball. Is curve looking wonky?

  75. 4TrainNorth April 8th, 2014 at 1:34 pm

Sori was really hurt by the missed time in spring training. But the hits have to start coming soon. Meanwhile, can’t wait to hear Nova in the postgame talking about how great he pitched today.

  76. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:35 pm

Pick off! Yes! I hope replay supports it. But I have my doubts.

  77. luis April 8th, 2014 at 1:36 pm

    I think so YF

  78. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:36 pm

Nah, Vato had no chance to get to first there, C R.

  79. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:36 pm

Cervelli didn’t do anything wrong there…..he was the only one that could field that ball. Nova didn’t get there in time to cover but it was a great bunt and tough play

  80. Badgerfan April 8th, 2014 at 1:37 pm

What is it that so many see in Nova? He’s just like an Edwin Jackson…a guy that never is as good as he seemingly should be.

  81. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:37 pm

    He’s out

  82. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:37 pm

luis, so maybe we can try that.

    Crap.

  83. 4TrainNorth April 8th, 2014 at 1:38 pm

Also, as for Jeter, this is another example of baseball conventions trumping common sense. There’s simply nothing Joe can do but continue to plug #2 in at short. But man, if you add all the DPs Jeter grounds into to all the DPs that won’t be turned because of his lack of range… it’s pretty significant.

  84. exiledintampa April 8th, 2014 at 1:38 pm

I don’t expect a 22 year old Jeter. A 35 year old Jeter with the glove would thrill me.

  85. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:38 pm

Longo would have had it. ;)

  86. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:38 pm

Defense hasn’t helped but Nova isn’t locating like he needs to. Too many balls right over the plate.

  87. SweetSpot April 8th, 2014 at 1:39 pm

In his last two years Soriano has hit more than 60 home runs with 200 RBI’s. He’s off to a slow start it happens.

  88. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:39 pm

Defense hasn’t helped, but Nova needs to bear down here to keep us in this. I still think we’ll score runs off the O’s today.

  89. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:40 pm

This game so far is an errorless defensive disaster…..it’s gonna look like nova got lit up in the box score…..really he shouldn’t have given up a run yet

  90. luis April 8th, 2014 at 1:40 pm

I have to go..But this really doesn’t look like Nova’s night… I did read that most hits were groundballs…So perhaps a little defense letdown?… Anyway, have a good one

  91. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:41 pm

Later, luis. Stay safe and update me when you get a chance.

  92. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:41 pm

Yanks need more fly ball pitchers…..where is Hughes

  93. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:42 pm

Solarte is not a 3rd basemen. The Yanks just threw him over there but he has mostly played 2nd base in AAA. So can’t blame him if he doesn’t make every play.

  94. Shame Spencer April 8th, 2014 at 1:42 pm

@eboland11 ball was scorched but Solarte didn’t look like a natural going after it. Nova sure hasn’t gotten a lot of a help from left side of infield

    ——————

I think bigdan’s whole thing with this is not that it doesn’t matter, but that it doesn’t matter as much as good pitching and good hitting.

In that regard I agree with him.. but when you construct a team like this, every aspect of the game is magnified.

  95. TheStraw April 8th, 2014 at 1:42 pm

He’s throwing meatballs….you can’t blame this game entirely on the D.

Joe needs to get Nuno up in the pen…

I think bigdan’s whole thing with this is not that it doesn’t matter, but that it doesn’t matter as much as good pitching and good hitting.”

It’s a strawman argument he keeps making…..nobody said it was more important than pitching or hitting……but it’s still very important

  98. austinmac April 8th, 2014 at 1:43 pm

The defense looks extremely suspect. Probably no runs score with reaonable defense. Now, the lack of power makes it harder to score in bunches. Maybe today some power will show up?

  99. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:44 pm

It matters when you have GB pitchers. And yeah, it doesn’t matter as much as the other two, but we already know that. Just like we realize the value of pitching (truism) which has turned into a narrative (debate) that was in debate.

Nova’s location so far blows today. And his CB again isn’t its usual crisp self.

  100. Hassey April 8th, 2014 at 1:44 pm

    He’s but it should be 1-0 right now….just saying…..it’s both things ….

  102. Shame Spencer April 8th, 2014 at 1:45 pm

It’s a strawman argument he keeps making…..nobody said it was more important than pitching or hitting……but it’s still very important

    —————

Especially when you have such a small margin for error.

Nova is a GB pitcher. He gets in and out of trouble a lot but with average INF D in this game, he’d be performing much better.

  103. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:46 pm

With average big league defense at SS and 3B the orioles wouldn’t have scored yet……again you give good offenses 4 and 5 outs an inning they are going to score

  104. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:46 pm

narrative (debate) that was *never in question* (should read) RE: need for Offense, not a lack of need for good pitching. So many things get conflated here. Oh, well…

  105. Hassey April 8th, 2014 at 1:46 pm

its reassuring to see how this site has so many pitching coaches and positioning coaches have their insightful eyes on every tick….as much as you can see on a TV from hundreds of miles away

  106. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 1:46 pm

Infield defense is going to be a problem all year long. We knew that going into the season so we shouldn’t be surprised now. I am really surprised that they never signed Drew.

  107. exiledintampa April 8th, 2014 at 1:47 pm

Without having that “3 homerun” guy, the defence becomes much more important imo. If sori had gone yard last inning it woulda been a tie game. It’s a lot harder to make up for poor defence with singles hitters.

  108. blake April 8th, 2014 at 1:48 pm

There isn’t a ton you can do about Jeter at SS now…..he will be ok and hopefully he will hit enough to make up for the plays he doesn’t make in the field. My thing all alone though was it would have been a good idea to get a plus defender at 3b who could also play SS some……

  109. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:49 pm

Sori would have done better to not think “go yard.” He might have actually gotten a hit.

  110. yankeefeminista April 8th, 2014 at 1:49 pm

And yeah, the D is as bad as we expected it to be.

Zero…..as I said all winter…..they are risking a lot of money and a pretty good roster by sending this infield out there. Hal was always going to cut payroll this year……he’s just sneaky and did it in a way that looked like they spent a fortune…..

  133. mick April 8th, 2014 at 2:01 pm

Most likely Drew wants more than 1 year at 10m per.
They must have their eyes on another SS and Alex will be back.

  134. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 2:01 pm

A better infield would be Drew 3rd base, Jeter SS and Solarte 2nd base. Drew can fill in for Jeter once or twice a week and Roberts can fill in at 2nd and 3rd. Roberts is not an everyday player and if they play him like that he will get hurt.

  225. NYY_Girl_Penny April 8th, 2014 at 2:33 pm

    Dear Soriano,

nobody cares you just hit a solo HR, why don’t you try and do that when it matters? Oh I forgot, Kevin Long doesn’t let you.

  226. blake April 8th, 2014 at 2:33 pm

  228. bruceb April 8th, 2014 at 2:33 pm

Nova should be a young, lean, hungry pitcher desperate to establish himself in the Yankees’ starting rotation.

Instead, when it’s not his day, he seems to spit the bit.

To give up seven runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings in front of your home fans – and on a day when the pen needs rest – is the definition of letting your teammates down.

  229. TheStraw April 8th, 2014 at 2:34 pm

  232. NYY_Girl_Penny April 8th, 2014 at 2:35 pm

I honestly think we would score more runs if we rearranged the lineup. We are getting hits and we are getting people on base but are not driving them in. What does that tell you?

Oh nevermind, that is probably a complicated question not answered in your 2014 binder yet.

HINT: build a lineup based on who is hitting the dang ball and who is not!

  233. Salliedogs7 April 8th, 2014 at 2:36 pm

Not a single person insulted anyone here other than yourself and tomingeorgia.. and wish people harm is your way of trying to ignite an issue where there is none. Nice try, perhaps you should look in the mirror and see you are guilty of what you are falsely accusing others of and you SHOULD be banned then!

    Jeter 3rd.
Our 5-7 would be the best in the league.

  366. NYY_Girl_Penny April 8th, 2014 at 3:27 pm

yeah lets leave Solarte in the 9 hole with all of our .100′s in the middle of the order. Leading hte league in doubles with nothing to show for it. Nice job building our batting order again by Girardi.

maybe you took it down and don’t remember for some reason

  373. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 3:31 pm

Like I’ve been saying all year, this game is yet another example of how baseball is mostly about hitting and pitching and infield defense rarely affects an outcome.

But like I’ve also said on many occasions, if you want to meaningfully improve the Yanks defense, there’s only one position to look it and hint, hint, it’s not 3b!

  374. Hassey April 8th, 2014 at 3:31 pm

we’ve all seen hundreds of these types of games over the years and they still suck when they happen

  375. tomingeorgia April 8th, 2014 at 3:32 pm

  376. TheStraw April 8th, 2014 at 3:32 pm

I’m sure once Ryan gets healthy you will see him at SS and Jeter will rest or DH.

  377. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 3:33 pm

But there’s always Solarte, a doubles machine! Coney said the same thing about him today I said a full month ago–he sure doesn’t swing the bat like a utility infielder.

Please, he pitched like crap and it’s all on him.

  386. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 3:39 pm

And as I said a few days ago, Solarte needs to see some games at SS sometime this year. That could have a big impact on next off season. The Yanks have been playing with an offense-first SS for a long time now so the fielding bar for that position is not very high for this team. His bat could be a huge asset as a SS if he can play the position somewhat adequately.

  387. Oscar Madison April 8th, 2014 at 3:40 pm

in all seriousness, we need two of Beltran,McCaan,Soriano bats to not just heat up but at least stop being so brutal.. right now they are all dead, Sori has shown a little life the last 2 games but he is a HR or nuthin hitter who strikes out just as much. The middle of the order better start hitting, I already think they should be moved to the bottom of the order.

  389. joeman April 8th, 2014 at 3:41 pm

I’d have to see a lot more of Solarte before he can be they can count on him going forward

Kind of. Except that Gardner’s only signed for 4 more years and $52 million compared to Ellsbury being signed for 7 years and $153 million.

  428. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 4:05 pm

I’ve said this before as well. I’m not a fan of having starters in the bullpen. Not unless the starter has SO stuff. Pitchers like Nuno and Phelps get hitters out by commanding multiple pitches. Pitching intermittently doesn’t help that. If they are not good enough for the ML rotation, they should be in AAA pitching every fifth day and waiting their turn.

Even in Warren’s case, the bullpen might affect him negatively as well. When he was starting in ST, he was throwing four pitches for strikes. Now as a relief pitcher, he seems to be using just his FB and slider. His best out pitch, his CU, is a real feel pitch and he’ll lose it if he doesn’t use it.

  429. mick April 8th, 2014 at 4:07 pm

  440. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 4:15 pm

Your starter sets the tone for every game. It’s hard to be competitive when your starter gets rocked from the get go like Nova today or CC opening day. Even the outs against Nova were load.

Gosh a bet the run differential doesn’t look too good right about now. More similarities to last year’s team.

  441. mick April 8th, 2014 at 4:18 pm

  456. blake April 8th, 2014 at 4:25 pm

There is nobody in their bullpen including Robertson with stuff that dominating……they have to pitch him

  457. mick April 8th, 2014 at 4:26 pm

problem with betances is that he attends the nova school of pitching.

  458. Patrick April 8th, 2014 at 4:26 pm

Every cloud has a silver lining! Betances threw well today. 1.2 innings, 3 K’s, 1 hit

Also we got two more Yankees on the board with home runs. Hopefully Tanaka comes in and dominates tomorrow to take 2/3

  459. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 4:26 pm

I guess that great bullpen ERA will take a hit today.

Let’s face, this game is all on Nova. He was awful. But the bullpen didn’t help either. There’s one guy back there who’s had success before as a long reliever and he’s now maybe the eighth inning guy. I didn’t like this bullpen construction before Drob got hurt and I like it less now. Too many guys playing out of position.

If the Yanks aren’t careful, they’ll give away too many games via the bullpen early the year while they “figure it out.”

  460. blake April 8th, 2014 at 4:29 pm

Betances can literally throw the ball down the middle as hitters really can’t cover 97 and then an 82 mph breaking ball both……they have to guess

  461. J. Alfred Prufrock April 8th, 2014 at 4:29 pm

“If the Yanks aren’t careful, they’ll give away too many games via the bullpen early the year while they “figure it out.”

Their bullpen had the 2nd best pen era in the league before today……it’s thin but today is on nova and the defense

  464. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 4:31 pm

“And it’s hard for your starter to get in a groove when he has to get 4 or 5 outs an inning because the infield is so bad”

    —–

First all, in over thirty games I’ve tracked this year the infield defense has had zero effect on game outcomes, just like this one. Second, like I’ve been saying all along, and this game was proof again, if you want to improve the Yankee infield in a meaningful way, it’s the SS you have to replace. And since that’s a non-starter, complaining about the Yankee infield is waste of everyone’s time.

  465. bbb51 April 8th, 2014 at 4:33 pm

Tanaka, Kuroda and Pineda didn’t seem to have a problem with this defense.

It’s not the defense, they scored 14 runs, hit 3 homeruns.

    Dan,

Adequate defense may well have eliminated the first four runs. How does the game go then? We’ll never know. There is no doubt Jeter’s defense is a problem. If he gives up one extra hit every four games(a very conservative figure I believe), he has to outhit the other SSs by forty hits.

I do agree that the greater need for this team is offense. Soon we will also realize the bullpen is short a pitcher.

  470. blake April 8th, 2014 at 5:25 pm

If Beltran and mcacann don’t hit the offense is in trouble…..

  471. Giuseppe Franco April 8th, 2014 at 5:37 pm

    Kinda dead in here.

Much like the Yanks offense so far this season.

  472. pete2 April 8th, 2014 at 5:38 pm

No reason to believe McCann and Beltran won’t hit. Players sometimes start slow with a new team and changing leagues.

Soriano heating up, and Ellsbury and Johnson continue to rake. Maybe Johnson garbage time HR helps jumpstart him.

The Orioles bats had struggled before today, like the Yankees. An explosion is sure to come, but with the Rays and Red Sox pitching coming up for 11 games in the next 2 weeks, it better happen soon.

Haven’t had time to watch the game yet, I guess the IF defense (primarily Jeter) was an issue.

  473. pete2 April 8th, 2014 at 5:39 pm

  477. Captain Clutch April 8th, 2014 at 6:05 pm

I am not worried about the starting pitching or offense. My main concern is the back of the bullpen (7th-8th innings) and to a lesser degree the infield defense. Especially the left side of the infield.

I mentioned that the Yankees were taking a big gamble w Nova.

His trade value was very high coming into the season.

If he went back to being inconsistent they made a huge mistake not moving him.

  480. J. Alfred Prufrock April 8th, 2014 at 6:08 pm

Yeah so, every time a young starter has a rough outing, let’s just trade the guy.

Sounds about how the Yankees think, which is why they all become relievers.

  481. MTU April 8th, 2014 at 6:12 pm

    JAP-

I am pulling for Nova but there was always the danger of him returning to the inconsistent pitcher he has been over the years.

  482. Joe from Long Island April 8th, 2014 at 6:23 pm

Per George king – via RAB – Milwaukee scout dick groche – the guy who was so high on Jeter – is scouting yanks. They speculate about a catcher for Weeks.

    How about nova for aramirez?

    1. Ramirez has one year left – I think. – and a lot of money owed. He’s a big bat, plays a position of need , and would free up Johnson to move around as Maddon used him.

    2. Nova is still a young starting pitcher with a good arm. The problem , I think, is he has difficulty making a plan B on the fly when he doesn’t gave his good stuff. Which happens. Messina once said a SP only has his good stuff a third of the time, has one or two pitches a third, and one third has nothing as has to figure it out and compete. Phil could never figure it out on the fly, and Nova has said time and again he has to look at post game videos and talk to Larry. Well, he’s been in the bigs for a while now. We keep waiting for the mental part of being a big league pitcher to kick in. It’s past due.

Which is ok if all you expect is a #5. Pineda and tanaka gives you that ability.

But, if you have phelps, Nuno, and others who can be a #5, and someone’s maybe intrigued by. nova’s potential – there’s that word- and someone wants to unload a contract. …..

Nova for Aramis Ramirez. Maybe not now, maybe when Robertson comes back, and frees up Warren, or some AAA starters show you’ve got some real insurance…… But before too long. ……

    Nova for Ramirez

  483. pete2 April 8th, 2014 at 6:26 pm

I am more concerned with the hit to Phelps and Nuno’s confidence as a result of their BP performance if it continues to go poorly. They are a big part of the SP depth, and if this makes them less effective pitchers as starters, well ……. . Warren is making himself indispensable to the bullpen and might have to be scratched as SP depth.

As for trading Nova, that’s a recipe for disaster. Pitching is way too thin and injuries are just so common.

  484. Joe from Long Island April 8th, 2014 at 6:26 pm

IF that deal is made, you need another pitcher to replace nova, and you need to cut an IF. Maybe Anna, but then you’re short a backup SS for jeter. Do , you either live with solarte as you’re backup as, or you wait for Ryan to come back.

  485. Joe from Long Island April 8th, 2014 at 6:28 pm

Pete – that’s a legit concern. But I have to think that kind of deal is being discussed.

I do agree that the greater need for this team is offense. Soon we will also realize the bullpen is short a pitcher.

    —–

If you look at the Yanks infield defense in this game as a microcosm for the season, which it might be, then you would fairly conclude that the only real problem (outside of Cervellli who just doesn’t belong in the infield) is Jeter. And I’m not really sure what the team can do about that. Solarte doesn’t appear to be an asset defensively but doesn’t appear to be a butcher either. Since not many balls get hit that way and rockets down the line are going to be hits most of the time anyway, third base is really not a problem. Roberts seems fine at second. His range seems ok if not better and we can watch in the future if his arm becomes a liability on double plays but I don’t see that yet.

Jeter looked old and slow today and probably missed at least a couple plays that would have helped Nova some. Nova probably would have faced an early exit anyway even if Ozzie was playing short they way he was being hit but there’s no question Jeter is a significant liability in the infield. But is he any worse now than he was five years ago? Who knows but once again, the question is moot. The Yanks are stuck with Jeter pure and simple this year and complaining about it isn’t going to make it go away. The Yanks have to concentrate on improving areas that they can possibly improve. And I’ve always felt if the pitching is strong enough Jeter won’t hurt them. Because that’s been the case for the last 15 years or so.

  487. Madrugador April 8th, 2014 at 6:51 pm

Nova has been inconsistent for years now. I think he will get several more chances to prove he belongs in the starting rotation but I have to think if he isn’t having more success by June 1st, he will be trading places with Warren.

  488. sandy g April 8th, 2014 at 6:54 pm

iam going to get beat up for this, but here goes.Jeter is for jeter first.anyone with eyes can see he can not play ss any more.Girardi does not have the b—- to get him out of there.jeter should go to cashman/gerardin and tell them i can not play ss the way i used to play ss.He is just a dh right now.Sorry to say this, but i do not want to see him finish this year like this.He should hold a press conference and either announce his retirement now or say he will finish the year as a dh/pinch hitter. The cube have a ss in Starlin Castro that can be had for the right price.Gary Sanchez/Maason Williams/Bryan Mitchell/Rafael DePaula should get it done.

  489. Joe from Long Island April 8th, 2014 at 6:57 pm

Sandy you are stating the obvious albeit not too delicately. In girardi’s defense, he’s got to manage people and a clubhouse. It’s the most difficult thing to manage a fading star. I don’t know if Castro’ a the answer, but they need to deal with it. I don’t know if short of injury it happens this year.

  490. pete2 April 8th, 2014 at 6:59 pm

Yankees pitching have given up GB at a 51.5% rate, the 2nd highest in all of MLB and well above average (44.9). Conversely, their FB rate is slightly below average. Ironic when you consider their defensive strength is OF and weakness is IF

I think its important to monitor Jeters cost on defense. In the past, his bat has offset his defensive liabilities. However, if either or both takes a wrong turn in the other direction, then decisions will need to be made.

Not making the playoffs cost the Yankees 70 million last year. They have made a 500 million investment on making the playoffs. While preserving his legacy and giving Jeter the respect he deserves is only fitting, at what cost?

I am not going to write Jeter off because of 1 game, but he is one of the big concerns on this team simply because him being good is so important to it’s prospects.

  491. blake April 8th, 2014 at 7:11 pm

No way Id trade Nova for Aramais……not when you could just sign Drew and keep him

Aramis would be an upgrade to the lineup but he can’t play defense either and you’re trading 3 years of a cheap starter for him……nope…..

Nova always stinks in April……lets not flip on him after 2 starts

  492. J. Alfred Prufrock April 8th, 2014 at 7:16 pm

    Madrugador April 8th, 2014 at 6:51 pm

Nova has been inconsistent for years now. I think he will get several more chances to prove he belongs in the starting rotation but I have to think if he isn’t having more success by June 1st, he will be trading places with Warren.
    ///

Warren is nowhere near the level of pitcher as Nova. Warren is a nice BP arm, but he will not be able to get through a tough lineup second and third times through.

Nova may get wonky, but when he’s on, he’s a front-end talent.

I think it is absurd to talk of trading Ivan Nova – when he’s going good he’s a sinkerballer with a fantastic K weapon curve.

The Stadium is not going to be kind to pitchers like Warren when hitters get a second and third look. He’s a back-end guy who has improved, but he’s not going to the head of the class.

  493. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 7:17 pm

It looked to me today Nova was getting the ball up again. That always seem to be the key to him getting hit. He needs to drive his FB down into the bottom third of the zone all the time. If his FB is not working somewhat he can’t survive alone on his curve. I would like to see him use his CU a bit to lefties.

  494. J. Alfred Prufrock April 8th, 2014 at 7:22 pm

    ///

MTU, you’ve been trying to trade Nova forever, so I can’t accuse you of being knee-jerk and just going on two starts.

But let’s not make it out like you haven’t been writing this like every other post in the offseason, and beyond.

Nova’s got some mechanical issues, but I wouldn’t be so cavalier about the dominant stuff, that would depart with him in a trade.

  495. bigdan22 April 8th, 2014 at 7:23 pm

“The Stadium is not going to be kind to pitchers like Warren when hitters get a second and third look. He’s a back-end guy who has improved, but he’s not going to the head of the class.”

    ——

You may be right JAP but I’ve seen some improvement in Warren over the last year or so. Even Girardi has mentioned his FB has gone up a tick or two and Girardi doesn’t think that’s just because he’s in the bullpen. I think his main improvement comes from using all four of his pitches. The problem is, because he’s now a late inning reliever, he’s gone down to two and I think his slider isn’t good enough to be an out pitch alone. He needs his other pitches.

The bullpen just seems completely screwed up to me. Getting Betances consistent in a role as a 7th or 8th inning high leverage guy would help a lot. Betances, Thornton, Kelly and Drob are real relief pitchers. The others are pretty much posers now.

  496. J. Alfred Prufrock April 8th, 2014 at 7:32 pm

    bigdan,

Warren’s slider is actually a lot better than it used to be, and he is throwing harder and he has a nice changeup.

The spike in velocity helps but I don’t think Warren’s fastball is something that would survive lineups that mash on a starting basis. I don’t think he’s as clever as Phelps, and he doesn’t have the great breaking pitch that Nova has.

Betances is wasted in the BP. He has the best pure stuff of anyone on that staff, and he comes in and throws two pitches, when he has a changeup that flashes plus and can be consistently plus in starts where he uses it in any count. It’s the biggest joke ever – that he has to rot in the pen while people cry about Warren and Phelps not being stretched out.

I hope they trade that kid. I had to laugh listening to Kay say ‘Well, you know, Randy Johnson took a long time to work it out,’ – no sh*t, but the Yankees have already decided Dellin’s a reliever, so the RJ comparison is ridiculous.

  497. blake April 8th, 2014 at 7:34 pm

I’ve tried to trade Nova a lot more than MTU in the past and there is no way Id move him for a old rental player like Aramis who help the lineup but does nothing to address the defensive woes……

Keep in mind that Nova has a career era of 5.53 in April……it’s always his worst month.

A few days ago everyone was talking about how nova limited the damage and pitched around trouble in Toronto…..now we want to trade him after one start!

Lets step back from the ledge a bit

  507. Madrugador April 8th, 2014 at 8:08 pm

I am not giving up on Nova yet but you have to consider that he has never been able to put together a good full season. His performance to date is not consistent.
I don’t thing the Yanks will hold onto Nova as long as they held onto Hughes and if he can’t find a way to keep it together when he doesn’t have is good stuff, I think he will get moved either to another team or the bull pen.

What JAP is saying about Warren and Phelps may be true but I am not buying that stuff about Betances. He must have spent too much time around Brackman because he seems to slip into that not-throwing-strikes mode at times. Too tall and can’t control his delivery? Maybe limiting his pitch selection is the way to go with him.

  508. MTU April 8th, 2014 at 8:08 pm

  511. mick April 8th, 2014 at 8:11 pm

Is Nova essential to this team’s success?
I would rate Tanaka, Kuroda, Sabathia and even Pineda ahead of him in this regard.
No question his stuff is1st rate but obviously the problem is in his head.
You can see in interviews that he is a nice kid with no killer instinct.
It’s not a stretch to think that he thinks his stuff will get him through every game, but it doesn’t.
When it doesn’t , what does he have to fall back on?
And why doesn’t it live up to its potential more often?
    What is holding him back?
Maybe it’s the pressure here, he seems to come up big against lesser teams, struggling with better teams in big games.
If they can make an intelligent trade, why not do it?

  512. champ809 April 8th, 2014 at 8:20 pm

    A couple of things….

It’s just amazing that after 2 starts some people think trading Nova and giving a spot in the rotation to Vidal Nuno is the way to go.

Vidal Nuno is a fringe major leaguer and really has no spot on a championship level roster. If he were smart and wanted to have a long major league career than he has to concentrate on being a career L.O.O.G.Y

The staff, particularly, the starters will be the strength of this team as the season moves along. Nova will get it going maybe as early as his next start and once he gets in his rhythm he just roll as he does. Tanaka will be beast I think over the next 3 months and Pineda I think may end up the best starter we have on the staff as he builds up his game stamina…we’ll see him back 93-97 as we head into June.

Blake please I’m begging you, love your posts and respect your knowledge of the game and our team, but please stop with the Stephen Drew longings….please?

After a while “mechanical issues” can be translated into mental problems or bad thought processes. If it’s immaturity, well how much longer before we milk a cheap thing only to see him go to FA. You know they are going FA or the trade route for another pitcher this year or next.
It’s not a given Kuroda is gone next year so someone will have to be replaced.

  515. mick April 8th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

As far as Betances, any sign of pressure seems to shake this kid.
Today was strictly mop-up so he pitched carefree , not so much last time out.
Why no love for Pineda or even Tanaka by huggers?
    Not really our own?
These guys are not our children, they are members of our team, and I want them all to do well so we can win as a team, without playing favorites.

I remember when game threads used to be fun, even with the inevitable negative posts showing up. Now you have to hunt to find a run of positivity, even when the Yankees win.

I guess it isn’t possible for the Yankees to have an off day as an entire team because those things just don’t happen in baseball. Every game proves that there’s at least one player on the team that doesn’t belong there and the Yankees need to make some quick trades. Heck Sori got dumped on and he had a good day! He does apologize for not homering earlier in the game though…

    *****************

bigdan22, I agree with your take on the AAA starters. I’ve never been a fan of keeping starters stacked in the pen, where they don’t have the opportunity to remain stretched out. I also agree that unless you have a SO pitcher, you put the kids at a disadvantage bringing them in as relief.

Was this a horrible game overall? Yes it was. Is it the end of the world or of the Yankees chances of having a great season? No it’s not. Fans need to learn to do what the players know how to do. Turn the page and look forward to tomorrow.

  520. willwill April 8th, 2014 at 8:39 pm

Betances i doubt is mental… he had to face bautista in ST with his shot at the major leagues on the line, and got both him and encarcion out. And in houston dominated… And today dominated, the dude just lost it that other game and couldn’t get it back.So when that happens you pull him. That being said, if you can’t predict it, it’s hard to rely on him..But doesn’t mean you only let him pitch in blow outs.

  521. mick April 8th, 2014 at 8:39 pm

every player has their good and bad points and that is all that’s addressed on game threads, immediate responses to what just happened.
saying nova stinks and should be traded is a gut reaction but is discussed in length on a daily basis.
changing the lineup based on what we are seeing is valid and discussed in depth off the game thread.
none of this is negative or positive, just condensed discussion.

  526. TheStraw April 8th, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Unfortunately, the game threads seem to be dominated by the same two negative posters, one of whom is the usual suspect and the other who clearly is rooting for the Yankees to fail. Today’s was particularly bad because most of the good posters were either busy working or simply did nit want to jump into the fray.

The thread, and today’s game, are best left behind. As Trisha would say, onward and upward.

  527. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 8th, 2014 at 8:56 pm

“none of this is negative or positive, just condensed discussion.”

As someone pointed out, there are posts that were deleted.

These game threads are a poster’s dream for those who get aggravated per at bat, because the “cooler heads prevailed” posters virtually disappear – and I don’t blame them. I do feel bad for posters like Sweet Spot and tomingeorgia, who apparently have the ability to not stomp their feet when things don’t go right. They’re lost in the haze.

See mick, I can remember when the game thread was populated by positivity reasonableness, even when the Ys were losing. It hasn’t happened for a while, but it definitely was here in the past. It’s when GB was here, and Doreen and Mel and Pat M and nick in SF posted during games. Not everything was roses, but there were enough people who didn’t flip out when things went wrong, and so the game thread was definitely tolerable.

For someone like me, (and probably to the joy of those who want to spend their time emoting) trying to wade through nothing but complaints, despite the Yanks being in first place, is an enjoyment ruiner and a waste of my time. So Triple actually did me a favor, and I’m sure he did many others here a favor in turn.

I’d forgotten I had this complete set of Jays 1992 cards sponsored by the Ontario Fire Chiefs Association, oh Henry bars, Mac’s Milk, mike’s mart, and the ministry of the Solicitor General of all things. They’ve been surviving on top of the microwave in original plastic for years, no worse for wear. ” Hello, Sir David, Juan Guzman, Ward and Henke, you too, Rance Mulliniks! ” Robbie, Joe, Winnie, Mr. Smootie Key. Coaches included as Gene Tenace must have been setting that spell for a Borders WS MVP. Hired gun Jack Morris with all that run support.

  530. pete2 April 8th, 2014 at 9:15 pm

In my experience elsewhere, game threads tend to be excessively negative when bad things happen, and irrationally positive when good things happen. Some people are more likely to discuss negatives (such as most of the news in everyday life generates discussion around the water cooler), and some are more prone to cheerleading and post more when things go right. With the 12 hr difference I can only go by the undeleted comments but don’t see much undo negativity except for that which is warranted in a 14-5 loss.

The negativity police War on Negativity, in an effort to get the thread up to their acceptability standards is entertaining at least.

Someday I imagine Lohud will upgrade to include the ignore function and they can read only like-minded commenter’s. Pretty boring IMO and I suspect it will be to them too, but to each his own.
