Did you buy a card? Happy birthday Mark Teixeira, you’re 34 years old.

Update, 7:17: Effective first inning for Sabathia, two Ks and one walk, Ortiz.

Update, 7:22: Easy 1-2-3 first for Lester.

Update, 7:29: Even better second for Sabathia, two more Ks, 1-2-3 inning. You would think he’d been able to still pitch well despite diminished velocity, but we’ll see, not just today, although an encouraging start.

Update, 7:32: Soriano HR No. 2, solo shot to deep left, down the line.

Update, 7:43: Nice job by Sabathia to strand a runner at third with one out.

Update, 7:54: Beltran strands runners at first and second with two outs, grounds to third. 1-0 heading for the fourth.

Update, 7:59: 1-2-3 for Sabathia.

Update, 8:08: Lester is tough tonight as well, 1-2-3 fourth with two Ks.

Update, 8:22: Sabathia strands another in scoring position with 2 Ks in the fifth, now 6 Ks in the game and 1,014 Ks as a Yankee, ties Roger Clemens for 11th on their all-time list.

Update, 8:26: Leadoff infield hit for Ichiro, but Roberts erases him with a double-play grounder. Heading for the sixth.

Update, 8:30: Sabathia grooves a pitch to Gomes, HR to left-field seats, 1-1.

Update, 8:32: Sabathia sole possession of 11th on all-time Yankee list, strikes out Pedroia, 1,015. Then he gives up an infield hit to Ortiz.

Update, 8:37: Girardi said Sabathia needed to stay away from his couple bad innings. He couldn’t. Three-run HR Sizemore, 4-1 Boston in the sixth. Betances warming.

Update, 8:44: It’s magnetic schedule night, just got one. My fridge door thanks the Yankees.

Update, 8:51: Soriano leaves Ellsbury at second with two outs in the sixth, grounds back to Lester.

Update, 9:02: Sabathia through seven at 111 pitches if the counters are correct, four runs, six hits. All the runs and four of the hits came in the sixth.

Update, 9:19: RBI single for Kelly Johnson, 4-2. Lester is done. Tazawa is on.

Update, 9:23: Jeter strands two with a fly to right, 4-2 Boston after seven. 44,121 for the announced tickets sold.

Update, 9:27: Cabral comes in to face Ortiz, lefty to lefty, and he walks him. Warren comes on.

Update, 9:38: Warren leaves two on, 4-2 last of the eighth.

Update, 9:50: McCann, pinch hitting as the potential tying run, swings through a splitter for the third out. Betances on to pitch.

Update, 9:57: Wow, Betances looks good, strikes out the side, including two looking at 96 mph and 95 mph. He hasn’t allowed a run in four outings so far, only one hit given up in four innings. Edward Mujica will try to close it out for Boston.

Update, 10:08: Yankees lose 4-2.

“Some of you should go to the games if you’re so concerned.
Hell, if enough went from LoHud the problem would be solved.”

Too much of a trek from little Rhody. Sorry about that.

    :)

    *****************

    GO YANKS!!!

    GO CC!!!

    Enjoy the game, all.

    *************

Field boxes behind visitor’s dugout totally empty. Just saying’

kd, I see some blue in the sky. If it rains, it doesn’t seem it will be soon.

I’m looking forward to a good Montero Pineda trade argument.

whoa! Lack of bandwidth tonight… my screen looks like a Salvador Dali painting! :)

    CC!

Shame it looks like CC is on but they can’t possible expect to win with no Godner.

  10. chicken_stanley April 11th, 2014 at 7:10 pm

Godner – we can do that… which side do you want? :)

  11. RadioKev April 11th, 2014 at 7:12 pm

K-Jo doing a good job getting to the bag.

  12. I am Brett Godner April 11th, 2014 at 7:13 pm

Montero was the future of the organization. Like having ManRam’s bat behind the plate and stupid Cashman trades him for some scrub pitcher who has only had one good half season.

  13. kd April 11th, 2014 at 7:13 pm

    thanks trisha.

  14. Jerkface April 11th, 2014 at 7:14 pm

Since 2007 its been strictly illegal to apply rosin to the ball, is another thing.

so moving right along – nothing to see here, folks!

    —-
the future of our org is sitting in aaa in a team of scrubs in Seattle and was it with a steroid suspension while pineda is the best pitcher we have so far this season.

  17. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:15 pm

Look, I know it’s early, but early CC sure is looking good!

I don’t mind him pitching around big fatso.

  18. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:16 pm

The Amica pitch zone called it a strike – and so did Remy.

  19. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:16 pm

Attaboy, C. Kind of missed, but I’ll take it.

  20. chicken_stanley April 11th, 2014 at 7:16 pm

    Godner – sorry. I don’t think I can do it… I start laughing everytime I start to type! :)

    Hello!

  22. chicken_stanley April 11th, 2014 at 7:18 pm

ac1 – Godner is just having fun. We were gonna stage an argument but I backed out on him like the coward that I am :)

  23. ac1 April 11th, 2014 at 7:20 pm

I assumed it was a joke, but I wanted to remind other s who still back montero

but completely legal to apply rosin to hands

  25. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:20 pm

Wow, Lester is 0-2 with a 2.51. Tells you that Sux offense hasn’t started to light up the world either.

  26. Ken Phelps April 11th, 2014 at 7:20 pm

Interesting discussion on wfan today about getting high prices Yankee tix on secondary market super cheap. Like $100 tickets for $15.

  27. chicken_stanley April 11th, 2014 at 7:20 pm

    greetings jmills

  31. RadioKev April 11th, 2014 at 7:28 pm

    CC looking sharp this inning.

  32. Shame Spencer April 11th, 2014 at 7:29 pm

Nice start from CC so far. I’d like to see a bigger velo gap, but so far so good.

  33. tomingeorgia April 11th, 2014 at 7:30 pm

Here come the boys who will do damage tonight, and I’m not kidding.

  34. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:30 pm

yf, you adventurous soul, you. Enjoy the brutality of that outdoor stadium?

  35. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:31 pm

I know it’s early in the season, but the way CC is pitching right now is a reason that you don’t call his season a failure during the first game.

When I mentioned that CC said he felt much better about his pitching this ST then he did last, I also suggested that he probably knows himself better than we do and he was probably on to something in terms of effectiveness.

Again, I realize it’s early so I am not saying that you are now looking at CC for the rest of the season. But I am saying it is a definite possibility.

We all need to wait a while before we attempt to make unequivocal pronouncements about anything.

  36. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:31 pm

tom, honest, I’m not intending no damage…

  37. ObiwanCanobi April 11th, 2014 at 7:31 pm

    WHO’S SORI NOW!?

  38. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:31 pm

    Sor-i-an-o!

  39. Jerkface April 11th, 2014 at 7:31 pm

    Soriano crushed that pitch, sick.

  40. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:31 pm

    OH MY GOD SORI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And here’s why you don’t give up on Sori!

    ==========
At the rate he is striking out Red Sox players, he will strike out 18 if he pitches 9, and 24 if he pitches 12!

    SorianO!

  42. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 11th, 2014 at 7:32 pm

an A-Bomb from errr, I mean Home Run, Sori!

  43. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:32 pm

Shame, let us know when you and your dad require the search party.

“Interesting discussion on wfan today about getting high prices Yankee tix on secondary market super cheap. Like $100 tickets for $15″:

Now if I could get field boxes at 1/5 of the price, I would definitely make the trek to the Stadium.

  45. RadioKev April 11th, 2014 at 7:34 pm

Soriano is just meant to swing a bat. How does he do that?

  46. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:35 pm

“At the rate he is striking out Red Sox players, he will strike out 18 if he pitches 9, and 24 if he pitches 12!”

    What’s Sterling’s call for Sori?

  47. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 11th, 2014 at 7:35 pm

You guys told me Acuuweather said it was going to rain…so i went and made some plans, again. After completing much of my honey do list, i thought i deserved a massage, a pedicure and some adult beverages! So I’ll be leaving again, shortly.

  48. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:35 pm

Bojo, you don’t have to answer by all means, but am I correct that you teach at Yale? You can admonish my Alomar ways btw.

I have never purchased tickets for any event from the source. Stubhub and other such sites are definitely the way to go.

  50. tomingeorgia April 11th, 2014 at 7:36 pm

    You saw it here first.

  51. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:36 pm

“Soriano is just meant to swing a bat. How does he do that?”

Getting on base once. He said that making it to first base took the monkey off his back and he relaxed.

  52. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 11th, 2014 at 7:37 pm

And this is a serious question-

Does Ichiro tuck? he looks like flat stanley to me.

  53. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:37 pm

Obiwan, looke up that Dave Elland reference. Kinda’ Mulholland Dr in spirit.

  54. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:38 pm

Hi jmills, I will tolerate almost anything to watch live baseball. :)

  55. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:38 pm

  57. chicken_stanley April 11th, 2014 at 7:38 pm

Trisha – I haven’t heard the Sori call this year but I think last year it was “who’s Sori now?”

  58. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:39 pm

    * looked ( all blame is on the blackberry )

  59. BoJo April 11th, 2014 at 7:39 pm

Michelle, you keep this up and there’s going to be a problem if you stay for a whole game, if you know what I mean!

    ;)

  61. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:40 pm

Bojo, the best I could do was, Trinity, U of T.

  62. chicken_stanley April 11th, 2014 at 7:41 pm

YF – youre at NYS too? Maybe you should hook up with Shame… apparently, her dad is a soft touch when it comes to doling out the chicken and waffles :) j/k… have a great time!

  63. ac1 April 11th, 2014 at 7:42 pm

Question…. When we score, does our pitcher ever come out the next inning and have a 1-2-3 inning.

  64. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:42 pm

    “Who’s sori now.”

LMAO!!! That is pretty schmaltzy but funny. Never knew it was that. Only Sterling.

  65. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 11th, 2014 at 7:42 pm

Good enough. And quick after the double

  69. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:43 pm

The secondary market has sold tickets way under face for the past five years. It’s nothing new.

    Thatta boy, C!

  70. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 11th, 2014 at 7:43 pm

  72. BoJo April 11th, 2014 at 7:45 pm

Maybe YF can also get cable from Shame’s Dad.

  73. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:46 pm

chicken, nope I am unfortunately at home tonight. I have an early morning tomorrow. I was referring to last night’s cold in the Bronx. I hope to get to have the privilege of experiencing Sunday night’s cold though. We shall see.

  74. ObiwanCanobi April 11th, 2014 at 7:46 pm

Listening on the radio is not very fun…

  75. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:47 pm

I’m wondering if I should get myself a ticket now for the last game of the season. I think it’s supposedly at fenway. I’m just afraid that I will sit there and cry (that’s serious), and I really don’t want to be the object of Sux fan derision. It’s bad enough that I do it! But Jete’s last game in the regular season. Don’t know how tickets have already sold but I probably could get something near the visitor’s dugout, and then people around me would understand my tears.

Maybe I need to find a “stop crying” biofeedback center. I know Johnson’s baby shampoo isn’t going to do the trick…

    :)

  76. CountryClub April 11th, 2014 at 7:48 pm

Last night was a quick game for these two teams (under 3 hours) and now tonight’s is flying.

  77. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 7:48 pm

Hey, would anyone want to make the trek to fenway and have a lohud day for the last game of the season? Something to think about.

  78. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:48 pm

I don’t need cable and I am a pescovegetarian, so the chicken won’t float, but I will take some sushi and a new macbook that is fast enough to pick up the upgraded MLB if Shame’s dad is offering.

  79. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:48 pm

Obiwan, I’m a hopeless radio guy.

  80. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:49 pm

Derek may choose like Mo to have his last game be played in Yankee Stadium. We shall see.

I hear they have rats at Fenway, trisha, you’re going to have to sedate me first.

  86. BoJo April 11th, 2014 at 7:50 pm

I’m listening on radio while watching Gameday on MLB.com. Surprisingly, the crowd looks very large, but they hardly move. Strange….

  89. CountryClub April 11th, 2014 at 7:53 pm

Derek may choose like Mo to have his last game be played in Yankee Stadium. We shall see.

    ————

Well, if that happens that would most likely mean bad things for the yanks this yr. if they’re going to the playoffs, he’s not sitting out a whole series.

  90. BoJo April 11th, 2014 at 7:54 pm

trisha–Isn’t the game blacked out on TV?

  91. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:54 pm

jmills, well, if you take the 4 train or the D to or especially from the game, you can watch the rats run around the tracks as you wait for the train to arrive. It is the nature of city living.

  92. Captain Clutch April 11th, 2014 at 7:54 pm

    Damn Beltran….

  93. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:55 pm

CC, maybe the games will be meaningless because we’ll be multiple games ahead. ;)

  94. luis April 11th, 2014 at 7:56 pm

    Good evening guys,

Just got in…What have I missed?

  95. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:56 pm

Anyway, we’ll have home playoff games hopefully, so it is all moot, but the serenades etc. will definitely take place at that last home game at NYS.

    Let’s do it C.

  96. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:57 pm

    Nice, C.

    Hi luis!

  97. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:58 pm

Maaaaaan!, I had to scoop out a dead rat behind the water softener in the country, but beyond that I haven’t come close.

  98. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 7:59 pm

C’s mixing his pitches very well, so far so good. I am not watching as closely as I normally would b/c I have the Charleston game on at the same time. Just saw Andujar and Katoh’s ABs, a first. But C is a pitcher. Capital P. But we knew that. ;)

  99. luis April 11th, 2014 at 7:59 pm

    Hi YF!,

  100. jmills April 11th, 2014 at 7:59 pm

Luis, you missed me talking about my fear of rats. I can’t even say the ” S ” word.

  101. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 8:00 pm

Boji, it’s not blaked out on NESN. That’s why I asked Obiwan where he was located. If he’s not in either market, I would be happy to let him use my mlb.com account, and he could watch it over the computer for free.

  102. Shame Spencer April 11th, 2014 at 8:00 pm

My dad is a nice guy, but not that nice! ;)

CC looking real solid – we need some runs. The bottom of the order is pretty ugly tonight. I’m hoping my criticisms will be a call to action.

  103. mick April 11th, 2014 at 8:00 pm

Hey, would anyone want to make the trek to fenway and have a lohud day
    =======================================
Do you have a suit of armor?

  104. pete2 April 11th, 2014 at 8:01 pm

CC has the Red Sox hacking away. Usually they make him work a bit more.

  105. Shame Spencer April 11th, 2014 at 8:01 pm

The only rats I know of at fenway are the ones sitting in the stands with “B” on their caps.

    Good evening guys,

Just got in…What have I missed?
    ===
According to my contemporaneous game notes, there was an interesting debate started on the Montero/Pineda trade, then discussion about Shame’s visit to NYS and whether she can get her father to pay for her cable, then we pivoted to discussing how impressive CC has been, then we briefly talked about waffles and other foods. I think that brings you up to date. Oh yeah, someone hit a homer too.

  115. I am Brett Godner April 11th, 2014 at 8:05 pm

Damn job. I really wanted to push that Montero Pineda argument a bit more but I can consult and watch the game but not make up forced rage on top of that. I didn’t even get to state that Monteros D behind the plate was just getting good and then Cashfool. trades him and his perfect oppo swing for Yankee stadium away for damaged goods.

Oh well. Good little start for CC. Nice to see that bad first innings aren’t necessarily a trend. Now to see how long he can stay out there. I’m no expert but I feel like a few more Yankee runs would help.

  121. ObiwanCanobi April 11th, 2014 at 8:07 pm

I really hope Katoh makes it, he has an awesome name too. He’s a good fielder, quick, and has surprising pop for a small guy. He’s only 19, so as he matures and fills out he’ll probably get more gap to gap power. I wouldn’t be surprised if they toyed with moving him to SS either.

  122. BoJo April 11th, 2014 at 8:07 pm

It doesn’t look like Solarte is going to hit 400 this year. Should we trade him while his value is at an all-time high?

    ======

I saw Mickey Mantles last 2 games which were at Fenway (first 2 games of a 3 game series). On the last game he played he only played 1 inning/AB and got pulled. He never even showed up for the last game of the series. At the time, I didnt know for sure was his last series/game but there was speculation

Key point is Jeter may not even play in that last series like Mo unless the Yankees make the playoffs

No, I didn’t or at least the site didn’t tell me that I needed it..I find interesting that it doesn’t work on your laptop…I am using my google chrome, perhaps that’s why…Still, when I run the speed check of the site ( MLB’s ) it tells me that i have barely enough speed for regular broadcast ( not HD )… I think the problem is since the events that started here in Feb, the speed fluctuates dramatically…

Well with Lester sporting a 2.51 ERA, the Yanks probably aren’t going to get a lot out of him. While I’m someone who loves a low-scoring game, I definitely want the Yanks to find a way to grind out a few more at least because the one thing I don’t want to happen is for an outing like this for CC, against the Sux, to go as a loss for him!

luis, so sorry to hear you can’t watch it; further, I like to “hear” your pitching insights. But once I get my skype updated, maybe I can help you out with the visuals. My laptop is a 2008 macbook. It worked fine through ST, and then suddenly when regular season games started, they said I needed to update my flash player. But my OS isn’t compatible unless I update. I just haven’t been able to spend the time at the Apple store. But plan to update everything next week. Right now, I can only watch MLB on my phone, but not on my computer; meanwhile, I can watch MiLB on my computer, but the phone app won’t work. Go figure.

  193. comet April 11th, 2014 at 8:33 pm

Hey Luis, YF, Shame, JAP,mills,Tom and Chicken.

I’m wallowing in disappointment with you about the Leafs again this year. I think they need to turn the roster over as quickly as possible, gut the scouting department and start over and hire a new coach. The culture of losing is a big part of the problem.

CC has pitched well tonight. Hope things don’t blow up this inning with the HR and single.

What a surprise…CC always starts good against the Sox and then unravels. It happens almost every time against them after the 4th inning.

  225. luis April 11th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

    Hey Comet!

Good to see you around..Hopefully things stay nice from here on out

  226. Jerkface April 11th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

Sabathia has been a broken record so far this season. 1 or 2 just bad innings in a game. Like AJ Burnett 2.0 here. He clearly has the ability to get guys out, but with his command he can’t afford to make any mistakes. He has to keep working at it.

It wouldn’t be the worst thing if he just went 6 innings 4 ER every game. They can win games that way. But it puts more pressure on Tanaka and Pineda to carry the staff.

Right now, if I had a ‘blue print’ for how I’d attack a playoff series with this staff. It’d be Tanaka/Pineda for 2 starts each and Kuroda with CC as the 4th guy.

  227. Brock April 11th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

Every game, same CC. Really hate seeing it with such a good guy.

  239. Jerkface April 11th, 2014 at 8:41 pm

CC’s “worst” innings last year 6th is #1. Then 2nd, then 1st, then 7th. He either didn’t have it from the start, or lost it by the end of the game. Might have to manage him much more careful now. Can’t leave him in to squeeze extra outs if he has a good game going.

He had an 8 ERA in the 6th inning last year, you know when his stuff will be getting worse and his already kind of meh command is starting to wane.

Well, he threw a get me over fastball to Gomes that he sat on and then there was the flukey Ortiz hit and then the roof kinda fell in.

Sizemore got one of his few bad sliders and the Yankees’ ballpark makes you pay for mistakes.

That’s why you really need a plus-plus offense to win your home games. It’s a shame, hate to see C suffer. He was pitching great.

  259. pete2 April 11th, 2014 at 8:46 pm

CC is basically a 4th SP’er for most teams, at least over the last year and change. Maybe he gets better as the season progresses, I don’t know since I don’t have a crystal ball, but as someone said up thread, at 89 he has little margin for error.

Yea of course, by the end of the year maybe I’d want Nova in there or maybe Pineda is out of gas anyways. But right now Pineda, Tanaka, and Kuroda are the guys with the best starts under their belts. Nova & CC are figuring things out.

I wouldn’t expect Pineda to pitch in the postseason this year anyways, I feel like they’ll shut him down at some point or he’ll simply run out of gas. Just saying who I’d want to pitch the most in a series right now.

One of the problems with having kind of average CC on the team is that Girardi is gonna manage him like work horse ace CC, where he gives him a long leash and tries to get more out of him. Could torpedo some games. I think he needs to have a quicker hook, at least in stadiums where he can get hurt easily.

He was always a guy you’d want to squeeze 220-230 innings out of, but maybe cut it down to 200.

Any appearances from Dellin are a bonus. Girardi doesn’t trust him, that’s why we don’t see him. So yes, he will get out of whack if he doesn’t pitch, and he won’t pitch if, the odd time they put him in, he’s out of whack.

Solution: if you’re not going to use him, trade him somewhere where he can start, which is what he should be doing any way.

That’s the way it always is, Badgerfan. The organization is more concerned with egos than with winning. F CC, F his impotent arm, F his pride.

Good game, my white butt. When was the last time CC really did pitch well vs Boston?

  336. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 9:04 pm

  337. bruceb April 11th, 2014 at 9:04 pm

I was so proud of CC going toe-to-toe with Lester but I always felt as though he was living on the edge. We know he’s lost some of his velocity but he seems to have lost his hunger and confidence too. You can live with the odd homer here and there but he completely unravels for one inning.

With this offense, you can’t afford to give up four runs a game as an SP, let alone four runs in one inning, especially against an elite pitcher like Lester.

Once again, the Yanks are paying dearly for a player past his prime.

  338. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 9:04 pm

    Oh, no?

Our standards for cc have gone way down if 4 runs in 7 with two homers is not bad

I don’t think 7 innings 4 runs is really that bad so long as starts like that don’t make up the majority. CC is bound to have some games where gives up 3 ER or less, I’d hope. If his middle performance is 7 innings 4 runs thats not bad at all. Now if this is more his baseline, then thats not good. But I think he can could have a 4 ERA or so by the end of the year if he had a lot of starts like tonight. Which wouldn’t be awful. If he pitches worse then his ERA is going to be near 5.

I said this after CC’s last start. I think he can be effective this year but you can’t match him up against another team’s ace. Because he’s not an ace anymore.

When he was an ace, and when he was on, you could expect him to hold teams to one or two runs. But now, if CC is on, it’s probably more like 3 or 4. The offense is probably going to have to score at least four runs for CC for him to win games consistently. Too little margin for error with his pitches.

  389. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 9:15 pm

“What a terrible lineup the NYY ran out there tonight….a 200 million payroll and probably 25 other teams have better lineups. They need someone new picking the player”

    Hi YF,

Thanks for the good wishes. Appreciate it.

I’m trying to avoid criticizing Girardi (I still don’t like his managing), but it’s not even three weeks into the season and already he’s driving me nuts. He’s like having a “new age” manager instead of a gritty manager who does what it takes to win.

  478. Badgerfan April 11th, 2014 at 9:37 pm

  485. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 9:39 pm

Guess Girardi knew what he was doing. Like I said, he knows his pitchers, knows who they’re facing in the inning, and puts the Yankees in the best position to win.

Moves don’t always work out, even when they’re the right moves.

For those who believe in Joe Torre, I will quote him for you: The difference between a manager being a genius and an idiot is the move working out.

Warren is very capable, no one is debating that. Especially those of us who have watched him since Trenton. However, you just need to keep Betances in the mix or he will be stale and out of rhythm. You are setting him up to fail. See Melancon.

  493. bigdan22 April 11th, 2014 at 9:42 pm

Very nice job by Warren. I think he actually used all four of his pitches. I believe that last SO was on a curve. I haven’t seen him throw that in awhile. It’s for him to keep his starter repertoire.

So what are the odds of winning any game when down by two runs in the 8th? 20%? Against Red Sox? 10%?

  494. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 9:43 pm

YF, I’d love to see Betances in there. I think he could strike out the side. I’m always trying to guess Joe’s motivation for doing things.

McCaan will be relieved to leave NY. He’s surely pressing. Then again he has never been known to be a great hitter.. sure he has a little power with 20HR but his bat in NL is slightly better than Russell Martin’s bat, why they think he is a middle of the order bat is beyond me.. it’s like batting Russell Martin cleanup.. Girardi thinks way too high of McCaan he really is nothing special offensively and never has been. So why are they putting pressure on him trying to make him a big bat is beyond me. Another example of stupidty from the Yankees manager and hitting coach.

Well all the pundits just loved this signing. Everyone seemed to believe he’d come to NY and hit 30+ dingers. The problem, his offensive arc had been trending down for a few years now. Throw in the shift and that’s how we got here.

Hey, I imagine he’ll improve. I just can’t see him getting on base enough to justify the investment unless he starts hitting a ton of homers.

    Yes

  581. mick April 11th, 2014 at 9:58 pm

Did anyone hear where Big Papi welcomed Solarte to the major leagues today?

  582. J. Alfred Prufrock April 11th, 2014 at 9:58 pm

Said his natural action will take care of movement, just throw the ball over the plate.

No one can hit him, doesn’t need to work the corners.

  583. ac1 April 11th, 2014 at 9:58 pm

Something wrong with uehara according to nesn. Don’t know what.

  584. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 11th, 2014 at 9:58 pm

NESN saying Uehara could either be sick of injured. No idea what’s going on.

  585. bruceb April 11th, 2014 at 9:58 pm

Everything about this game was great apart for that one inning by CC. Such a shame if we don’t come back in the ninth.

If Betances can show this level of control most nights, he’s going to be a lethal weapon.

  590. J. Alfred Prufrock April 11th, 2014 at 10:00 pm

I’ve been saying that for about three years – the guy does not need pinpoint anything. He got a fair amount of “ball” calls on strikes because the ball moved so much the ump would blow the call.

    Oooohhh

  591. Badgerfan April 11th, 2014 at 10:00 pm

McCann never carries a team. He can be decent but that’s it. Trying to make him an offensive leader is a mistake. But I suppose with an offense this rancid the yanks are desperate.

This game is really pretty simple. It’s about pitching and hitting and just about everything else is nearly irrelevant. The Yanks’ losses this year? Bad starting pitching by CC and Nova, some bad bullpen work by Phelps and some real bad hitting. And it’s not RISP stuff. It’s just bad hitting overall. And little power.

And Gardner strikes out way way way too much.

The problem is, I’m not sure the offense is significantly underperforming.

We got a nice run by Solarte but that can’t be expected to continue. Gardner is Gardner. Jeter is Jeter. Ells is playing great. Sori is heating up. We’re lucky Tex is out and Johnson probably is more productive than Tex would be. So where are the underachievers? Well Beltran will hit more. And McCann has to hit more but his OBP will likely be awful all year. And Roberts? He was a flier to begin with.

It’s probably not true, but I can’t help but think that all the constant line-up tinkering hurts the offense. That said penny you have to come out for White Castle chicken and waffles with chicken and me. Waffles are on me. You buy your own damn soda.

Delin is still young. He may yet start again in the future. Many examples of this. I am happy to see him get his feet wet in majors this year rather than risking another year trying to figure out starting, and then losing him in draft next year.
    ///

Bojo, here’s how they could make themselves look brilliant.

We fixed him, we put him in the bullpen and then we’re going to build him back up and turn him loose in the rotation, because he’s a front-end talent.

You know how we felt about what they did to Joba, this guy’s way more talented.

  690. bruceb April 11th, 2014 at 10:27 pm

Offense is giving the SPs little or no margin for error and I have to agree with bigdan that there are not too many reasons to believe it will get much better. Tex would improve it – on paper – but when was the last time he hit one out of the park?

We’ve caught lightning in a bottle with Solarte and Anna. Roberts and Johnson should be bench players. You can’t expect to score in double digits when you have Cervelli batting No. 5 in the order. How many career home runs does he have?

You could say that CC made one mistake but the problem is he makes too many mistakes and they are hurting them in all of his starts. He was cruising along and then didn’t locate on 3 pitches and there goes the game. He has had a lot of games against the Sox like this, 4 good innings and then he loses it. He’s crushed some sliders. I pointed out a couple days ago that pitchers should try showing him soft stuff off the plate. He’s def seeing more of that. Lots of splitters in last at bat. But I don’t see him chasing much. His strike zone judgment seems to be good. I think this is mostly some tougher pitching generally and a normalizing of BABIP.

  728. Shame Spencer April 11th, 2014 at 10:42 pm

The offense is the issue this season. We knew it would be tough to scrape wins together if the team was hit with any injuries and as much as I rag on Tex he is a better/more productive hitter than Johnson. If any of the other major offensive cogs (Ells, McCann, Beltran) go on the DL even for a couple of weeks each, it’s going to be hard to recover.

Forget the INF defense and the pen.. the offense needs to get better.

  729. bigdan22 April 11th, 2014 at 10:45 pm

“Not counting tonight Yankees are hitting .240 .284 .310 .594 with RISP, 30% worse than league average”

    —–

That’s actually pretty significant deviation from their overall numbers. Over a season, such deviations tend to disappear. I would argue tho that the lower RISP numbers are not evidence of poor luck or lack of “clutch.” I would argue its just stronger evidence of lack of hitting acumen. When the pitcher truly bears down, the Yanks’ hitting worsens.

    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....01/01/2015

If you wanna see Solarte’s batting card you can look here.

When Solarte puts the fastball in play he is hitting .556
    .400 on Sinker
    .167 on the change
.500 on the slider (but has only put 2 in play)
    0 for 1 vs curve
    0 for 3 vs cutter
    1 for 2 vs Splitter
1 for 2 vs the Knuckler

There isn’t enough data here to say what kind of hitter he is, but given the fastball heavy approach he was getting early, it probably contributed to him nailing that hanging slider because he was sitting dead. Now that guys are pitching him more carefully he has to adjust.

These numbers don’t include todays game. He got rocked by stuff on the outside part of the plate today.

  757. bigdan22 April 11th, 2014 at 11:00 pm

Solarte has shown so far three very positive attributes as a hitter. He has bat speed. He’s crushed high octane FBs while also hitting some curves hard (in ST). He always been a high contact hitter. And at least so far, he’s controlling the strike zone very well. Over at IIATMS they did an analysis of this showing him swinging at only 26% of pitches out of the zone and making contact 85% of the time which is really good. He’s going to see a lot of slow stuff now like curves, splitters and CUs and you started to see that tonight. We’ll have to see how he adjusts, but if he can control the strike zone, and maintain his high contact rates, he should have the ability to make the necessary adjustments.

  758. Jerkface April 11th, 2014 at 11:00 pm

Only the Yanks could spend $450 million on new players and still have a mediocre offense. Doesn’t reflect too well on the GM IMHO.

But that’s what happens when you rely 100 percent on free agent signings and dumpster diving rather than developing your own players. We had too many holes to fill this winter, including one massive one when we cut ties with our only genuine All-Star hitter. And I wouldn’t have given him a 10-year deal either.

    ——————-

He looks better in the field than I expected but worse in the box than I expected… bad news. He and Johnson are not every day players.

  771. Shame Spencer April 11th, 2014 at 11:09 pm

He and Johnson should definitely not be in a line up when you’re sitting McCann and Gardner.

I think that Joe brought in Betances in the 9th against the Sux speaks volumes.

    And the kid delivered.

  777. Hankflorida April 11th, 2014 at 11:15 pm

Starting last year, the Yankees have transformed into the team that depends on pitching, speed and clutch hits. Last year, they averaged out four runs a game, and our hope is that this team will do better in their ability to manufacturing runs. This is Cashman’s blueprint for winning, and banjo hitters are easily interchangeable in lineup at a lower cost then having to depend on the high cost power players unless he can get them as they become senior citizens. I do not agree with the demise of The Bronx Bombers but will give his vision the time to succeed as “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

  778. SweetSpot April 11th, 2014 at 11:15 pm

Girardi’s handled Betances perfectly. Today, as the YES crew pointed out, he was given a chance to prove that he could be trusted to handle a late inning close Sox game. He came through with flying colors. You earn your rungs up the ladder in the show.

  779. luis April 11th, 2014 at 11:16 pm

I had to take a break… Before I go to bed:

Cashmoney and JAP: I was no fan of going 10 years either. In fact, I thought that trading him might have been the way to go in a rebuilding scenario. But they chose the spending route. On that scenario he was a must have…Most LT contracts would have been off the books and I think Cano will age well… The problem is that they chose “the spending to a point route” and that isn’t enough to take this team over the top. They better get real good at drafting and developing players or we will be on a real pickle in the not so distant future.

  780. BoJo April 11th, 2014 at 11:17 pm

Theres really only 3 ways to get a young hitter nowadays:

    1. Develop one
    2. Trade for one
    3. Sign one in IFA

And the Yankees suck at #1, don’t have the chips for #2, and are too scared of the risk (LOL) for #3.

But he’s no dummy…. so yeah I was kind of kidding when I posted that.

Betances was in because there was no one left and the Yanks were down by two runs. Joe is saving Kelley and Phelps for tomorrow (A pen). And Thornton is a LOOGY. Now if they start giving Betances high leverage innings, I will take notice, but until then, I am giving no one props. I will say though that they recognize how good his stuff is, but who wouldn’t. The guy is lights out and has been for years.

  783. SweetSpot April 11th, 2014 at 11:20 pm

Solarte is 1-11 in his last three games. He has proven he can hit a fastball and today Mujica threw him four straight splitters. He will have to prove he can hit off-speed pitches or he’ll just be another journeyman.

  784. luis April 11th, 2014 at 11:20 pm

    RIB,

With all due respect..If he had real faith on Betances he would have sent him on the 8th to keep the game close, since the top of the order was coming on the bottom of the inning…He sent him on the 9th, because he thought the game was over…Still, I think Betances did earned some trust tonight…Which means that he will be given more important chances as the season goes on.

I must say that the organization deserves credit for finding great young arms over the past few years. Tanaka, Pineda, Nova, Greene, Banuelos, Turley, Betances, Robertson, Warren, Phelps, Cesar ?, Burawa, Montgomery, etc. I am very optimistic!

And I like what they have done with catching prospects too.

And if Tyler Austin and a couple of the other OF kids come through, we will gave that covered.

The only glaring weakness is INF, and there are some lower level prospects that could pan out there. If they put the same focus on INF over the next few years in INTL signings and acquisitions, I think they will be a very powerful and well-balanced team.

We might not see it all this year, but it’s coming.

As I recall it, DRob was a little too wild early on to get high leverage situations. It wasn’t until he demonstrated his ability to get out of jams that Joe started to trust him more. But I don’t blame Joe for being cautious with a late inning reliever with control issues.

The thing with Betances is that working him into high leverage situations slowly is fine, but he needs regular work. Joe needs to get everyone some work but I think Betances would really benefit from getting a lot of work in a shorter period of time, then some time off, then some more work.

Rather than right now where he got into a blow out, then pitched .1 innings 3 days later, then pitched again 4 days after that then finally got into his 4th game 3 days after that.

Caesar Cabral has been on the roster for like a week and he has already gotten into as many games as Betances had got into in 2.

I *cleared my sched (just to see him pitch), should read

  855. J. Alfred Prufrock April 11th, 2014 at 11:50 pm

Dellin will force his way on. His stuff is amazing. That is why we have been talking about him for five years on here. I would clear my sched every week just to see him pitch live.
    ////

Me too! Done that! Plus this kid is a true New Yorker :)

  856. J. Alfred Prufrock April 11th, 2014 at 11:52 pm

C was more than ok early. It unspooled, however.

The bigger problem is one we have become accustomed to: no offense.

  857. Shame Spencer April 11th, 2014 at 11:52 pm

Caesar Cabral has been on the roster for like a week and he has already gotten into as many games as Betances had got into in 2.

    ——————–

I don’t understand this either… Cabral wasn’t good enough to make the team out of the gate. I dunno why Joe got gun shy on Betances so quickly.

  858. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 11:55 pm

Nah, I think Joe G. is very methodical generally. He crosses all his p’s and q’s, which is great except it can also result in not being particularly innovative sometimes. Such as lineup construction the past few years even when players were not hitting at all, etc. Putting Teix in the 4 hole batting lefty, etc. As for Maddon, I think he is just a naturally creative thinker and he and his team thrive on it. He does things he thinks will help the Rays win. He’d do the same with the Yankees and Joe G. would do the same with the Rays. JMO.

  859. yankeefeminista April 11th, 2014 at 11:57 pm

For example, it took Joe forever to move Cano up in the lineup; he didn’t move Posada up in the 2011 playoffs when he was the only one hitting, etc.

  860. J. Alfred Prufrock April 11th, 2014 at 11:58 pm

    bruceb April 11th, 2014 at 11:01 pm

Only the Yanks could spend $450 million on new players and still have a mediocre offense. Doesn’t reflect too well on the GM IMHO.

But that’s what happens when you rely 100 percent on free agent signings and dumpster diving rather than developing your own players. We had too many holes to fill this winter, including one massive one when we cut ties with our only genuine All-Star hitter. And I wouldn’t have given him a 10-year deal either.
    ///

Well said. I agree with all but the last sentence.

  861. Shame Spencer April 11th, 2014 at 11:59 pm

Nah, I think Joe G. is very methodical generally.

    ————-

To the point of paralysis sometimes..

He can definitely manage without a sense of urgency. It’s early in the year now, but Joe’s been known to play B or C line ups when we’re in the home stretch and are in a dog race.

  862. SweetSpot April 12th, 2014 at 12:00 am

Girardi said clearly a while ago that he will play whoever is getting the job done. Beatances made the team and has seen action in four games so far. If he continues to perform well, Girardi will use him regularly in increasingly important game situations. He has to earn it. If Girardi does anything well it is managing his pen.

  863. J. Alfred Prufrock April 12th, 2014 at 12:00 am

YF, so true. Robi was still hitting seventh in 2009. I remember Pedroia saying ‘that lineup is stacked, they have a guy who is a great hitter hitting seventh.”

What he didn’t say was how ridiculous that was. Posting on PSD, I was screaming for him to hit 5th for I don’t know how long, and then ultimately for him to hit 3rd.

  864. jmv April 12th, 2014 at 12:01 am

    YF,
I’ll give you Joe is more conservative.

Like maybe in the 2011 ALDS when he pulled a Scarlet O’Hara, even though there virtually was no tomorrow?

Ayala, instead of a rested DRob or Untuck?

    Still. pisses. me. off.

  866. jmv April 12th, 2014 at 12:02 am

“To the point of paralysis sometimes..”

Shame, now you’ve made me LOL

  867. Tar April 12th, 2014 at 12:03 am

Yeah pitch 17 and the last pitch (19) McCann called for an outside FB, you can’t see any movement from Dellin but McCan quickly changes it.

I think it takes guts for Dellin to do that, especially because of the situation.

  868. jmv April 12th, 2014 at 12:04 am

To be honest, players are rested. Eliminated, but rested
