Sorting through rotation replacement candidates

Joe Girardi

Before yesterday’s game, Joe Girardi was ruling out no one — except Double-A call up Bryan Mitchell — as a rotation replacement candidate.

“I think we have to look at every possibility right now,” Girardi said.

After yesterday’s game, Girardi was still ruling out no options, but it was clear that he’d been impressed by Vidal Nuno.

“He was great,” Girardi said. “We thought he started to tire there at the end, and that’s why we pulled him. We even had Phelpsie up earlier than that, but he kept making some big pitches and that’s a big boost to be able to give us five innings like that and to be able to hold that team down, especially the way they were swinging. It’s a big start for him. Obviously we need to make some plans for Saturday, and we’ll do that tomorrow.”

Here’s a quick look at some of the possibilities for Ivan Nova’s open rotation spot. It’s worth noting that the Yankees could find one short-term and eventually settle on a different long-term answer.

NunoVidal Nuno
The guy who has the job at the moment
After making a spot start on Sunday, Nuno actually fits into the rotation perfectly for the time being. He would be on turn to take Nova’s next start, and he’s stretched out enough to throw roughly 80-plus pitches next time out. For the moment, Nuno is in place and seems like the most natural short-term option. Yesterday’s five scoreless innings more than doubled his workload for the season, and while he acknowledged getting tired in the late innings, Nuno breezed through the early innings and looked like a guy capable of getting through a big league lineup more than once. “It was just another outing, and another opportunity to go out there and prove that I could pitch,” Nuno said. “And I went out there and gave it my all.”

PhelpsDavid Phelps
The guy with the most experience
Aside from the four guys currently in the rotation, the Yankees pitcher with the most major-league rotation experience is Phelps. He made 12 starts last year and 11 the year before. Down in Triple-A, Alfredo Aceves has more major-league innings than Phelps, but not as many major-league starts. Phelps and Adam Warren were each rotation candidates this spring, but Girardi indicated that Phelps seems like a more likely rotation candidate now. “I don’t think it would be too hard (to get him stretched out),” Girardi said. “I think Phelpsie, his outings have been a little bit longer than Warren’s. They’re not as stretched out as they were before.”

AcevesAlfredo Aceves
The guy waiting in Triple-A
In spring training — on the very day they decided to carry all three of Nuno, Phelps and Warren in the big league bullpen — the Yankees signed Aceves to a minor league deal with plans of putting him in the Triple-A rotation. Aceves stayed behind in extended spring training to get stretched out, then he made his season debut with five scoreless innings for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. The struck out five, walked one and allowed three hits. Good season debut for a guy who’s had some big league success at various times and in various roles. “He’s obviously a guy that has pitched in the big leagues and has had success here,” Girardi said.k “I don’t know if he’ll be in the conversation, but we’ll sit down and talk about it.”

GreeneShane Greene
The guy on the 40-man roster
The Yankees have only one Triple-A starter who’s actually on the 40-man roster, and that guy happens to have barely pitched this year. After staying in big league camp all spring, Greene was left behind to get stretched out in extended spring training, but he wound up being called up to serve as a just-in-case major league mopup man. He never got in a game for New York and has since made two relatively short appearances out of the Triple-A bullpen while trying to get back into starting shape. Greene wouldn’t seem to be a short-term option, but none of the other healthy Triple-A starters (Manny Banuelos is still in Tampa, Nik Turley has yet to make his season debut) are on the 40-man. Aceves, Chris Leroux, Bruce Billings and Brian Gordon do have big league experience, though. Greene and Banuelos could be better options a month from now.

?@nickcafardo Clay Buchholz, Mike Napoli and John Lackey spent the night at the ballpark because of the short night.

This makes no sense, what did they do go camping inside the green monster? Did they make smores?

@injuryexpert Is WAR/start a valid measure of anything or just a meaningless breakdown that doesn’t show start to start variance?

Will Carroll doing a bigdan impression!

JF – It’s pretty funny right? I mean… don’t most of these guys live within driving distance of the ballpark?

ok re-posting because i think it’s important to be informed –

Im going to put this here for people who care to read about injuries and how they heal. So that I dont have to read things like “ligaments dont heal” and “it can only get worse”

Im here to tell you LIGAMENTS CAN HEAL – If they didnt, then everyone who sprained an ankle would need surgery. Ever jam your finger? Yup that usually causes ligament damage, did you have surgery? Nope, probably not. Sprains and strains are tears – tears are graded by degrees 1-3, each degree has a designation. 1st – Micro tear (small or frayed) 2nd – Macro (large tear or fray) 3rd – Complete rupture.

Without getting into a whole biology lesson – your body goes through 3 stages of healing

    1. Inflammation – lasts up to about 100 hours – This process increases white blood cells (luekocytes) and causes intracelluar swelling – this is the phase we want to stop asap, so we use ICE or various RICE methods. This stage is also important becuase all that new blood helps sweep out all the damaged and old blood.

once inflammation is slowed we enter into the 2nd stage of healing

    2. remodeling phase – this includes macrophages which clean up the mess and tells your body to send prostoglandin and other materials to start fixing the problem – this can last up to 6 months. It’s a compicated process so i’ll skip the details but google if you want to read about it, it’s very cool that your body can do such things.

    3. healing phase – basically collagen comes to the area and is layed over the tears to create a new surface on the ligament – muscle or other soft tissue. Then we rehab to make it stronger – if it’s a muscle – if it’s a ligament we rehab to make the muscles surrounding it stronger while the ligament itself becomes tighter.

This is it in a nut shell.

So class, you see, ligaments can be essentially healed. I’ve personally seen and know about 4 pitchers who had small UCL tears with rest and the right rehab come back to pitch without problems. Now, small sample size, because most doctors push to have the surgery, because most want to get rid of the probelm without waiting around to see if the rehab works. Tommy John surgery has one of the highest sucess rates, slightly below ACL surgeries. Doctors on the other hand wont do that with shoulders – because shoulder surgery has a sucess rate of less than 50% and almost always requires a 2nd surgery.

Two pretty big mistakes by john farrell last night, imo.

first off, switching pitchers before the pinch hitter was announced was ridiculous, a mistake i dont think i’ve ever seen a manager make.

second, he should have told bucholz to go home and thrown him out of the clubhouse if he refused.

the RS responded to farrell last year (possibly just as a pendulum swing back towards francona’s ways after valentine’s reign of terror) but the blue jays didn’t like his managing and we’ll see what happens with the RS going forward.

    Let’s go O’s!

Monday’s are so much worse when the Yankees are off.

Good article about Nova here… http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs.....h-al-east/

Let’s hope someone can step up in his place. If CC can limit the homers and give us some quality starts, the loss of Nova will be much less significant.

Can’t wait to crush the Sox tomorrow.

  9. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 12:45 pm

i dont think you’re going to be rooting for the o’s to beat the RS come august and september.

i think the O’s are better. but in these games i root for 7 extra innings.

  11. Shame Spencer April 21st, 2014 at 12:52 pm

?@YankeeSource Melky Cabrera’s setting himself up for a big payday if he keeps this up.

Melky is sporting an insane line of .345/.367/.563/.930 right now.

  12. Mottsx April 21st, 2014 at 12:54 pm

Melky is probably using all of A-Rod’s spare gummies.

Sorry about your dog. Sometimes the right thing is not easy.

  14. austinmac April 21st, 2014 at 12:58 pm

    Michelle,

I don’t think a tear will heal as opposed to a stretch. I am still looking around , however, for my medical degree.

  15. Jerkface April 21st, 2014 at 1:00 pm

What I would like to know is, how many pitchers with partial elbow ligament tears that rehabbed ended up not having TJS at some point in the next 2 years?

  16. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 1:01 pm

Melky has done even better than that before. In july of 2011 he went .382/.412/.580/.992 in 112 at-bats.

he’s had 87 AB’s so far this month.

  17. G. Love April 21st, 2014 at 1:02 pm

Sending you good peaceful thoughts on a horrible day blake.

  18. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 21st, 2014 at 1:03 pm

there is no such thing as a stretch – thats my point – if it’s a sprain or a strain there is a tear however small or large it might be. It can heal – there is a very biologically process. However, most doctors wont suggest that process for the professional athlete.

  19. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 21st, 2014 at 1:04 pm

Blake – sorry to hear about your loss. My dog is like my first child and I certainly know the pain of losing a loved one. Hope you are able to find peace.

  20. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 21st, 2014 at 1:06 pm

Jerkface – i think that is a good question – however i think there is hardly any facts out there that can be looked at, due to Doctors most always opting for the surgery in pro athletes. It’s only because – if you are going to go through that long of a rehab process, then you might as well go with the almost sure thing. For elbows and knees anyway.

  21. Shame Spencer April 21st, 2014 at 1:06 pm

JF – Do you know of any studies that show what the current likelihood of needing TJS is? The more recent articles I’ve read have only detailed this year’s TJS’ but I dunno if anyone has looked at the number that have been done historically – say over the last decade maybe?

  22. hardwired7 April 21st, 2014 at 1:10 pm

Makes no sense to have Nova pitch wondering if the next breaking ball he snaps off will be the one that leads to a total tear.

He’s only 27. There’s plenty of time to have the surgery, rehab and still have a lengthy and productive career.

  23. Madrugador April 21st, 2014 at 1:11 pm

Almost as good as O’s/ RS games going 7 extra innings is Buchholz going only 2.1 innings in a start the day before the Yanks come to town.

  24. G. Love April 21st, 2014 at 1:11 pm

Well, now that G.Love is here it seems like a good time to reignite the discussion of where we should bat Tex.

  27. Madrugador April 21st, 2014 at 1:16 pm

Looks like the non operative approach to UCL injuries are used in order to get rid of pain and to stabilize the joint. Probably fine for you and me but for a major league pitcher with the load that is going to be applied to that joint, the non operative approach does not look like the way to go.

  28. G. Love April 21st, 2014 at 1:18 pm

    Shame,

I’m still gobsmacked that during Easter dinner I glanced at the tv and decided Tex looks like Lena Dunham.

Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

  29. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West April 21st, 2014 at 1:19 pm

and BTW – im from the school of have the Tommy John – but i also think it’s important to understand the biology of healing – When i taught sports medicine at the University and High School levels, this was the most important chapter in all of my teachings. If you can understand this, you can basically figure out how to go about helping an athlete heal, what rehab goals should be and where a person should be in terms of days, weeks, months in the process. Without that knowledge you’re basically limiting what you can do for your athlete.

  34. blake April 21st, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Wainwright is the first guy that comes to mind on the partial tear as he pitched for I think 6 or 7 years at ace level before his elbow finally blew……that’s probAbaly unusual however. Everyone is built differently…….surgery is likely gonna be the best option but there are some cases where it may not be

  35. bigdan22 April 21st, 2014 at 1:30 pm

I said during ST and I continue to maintain the Nuno, Phelps and Warren are not relief pitchers. I assume it’s pretty obvious now that’s the case with Nuno. Just look at his career. Phelps I believe can function adequately as a long man (which is not much different than a back end starter), but I think it’s been pretty obvious this year that he does not have the arsenal to be a late inning reliever. He is at his best for 2-4 innings when he has an opportunity to build some rhythm and get his FB on the corner called for strikes. Entering an inning with men on base is not his strength.

Warren has shown success as a reliever primarily because he is has actual SO stuff. But as we saw over the weekend, his efficacy is derived from throwing all four of his pitches for strikes, the classic profile of a starter. When he just relies on his fastball and slider he can get hurt.

Just because a pitcher has some success as a relief pitcher doesn’t make him one. Except when that success becomes a trap. Consider this. If Nuno had pitched better in relief against Baltimore two weeks ago do you think he would have made the start yesterday? I’d say probably not. If he had pitched well in relief of Nova a couple weeks ago, Girardi would have used him again, and again, and he’d be part of the bullpen much the same way Warren is now. Because the Yanks need good arms in the bullpen.

So here’s the irony. Nuno’s failure in the bullpen may have provided him with the biggest break of his career. And Warren’s success has likely cheated him of what he should be destined to become.

  36. bigdan22 April 21st, 2014 at 1:36 pm

“I’m still gobsmacked that during Easter dinner I glanced at the tv and decided Tex looks like Lena Dunham.

Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.”

    —–

I was a pretty big fan of Girls for a couple seasons. I think Lena Dunham is a very talented creator/writer. But there was an episode this last season where, for me, she took off her clothes just one too many times so I haven’t watched since. To quote something Hawkeye Pierce said many many years ago “I think I just got turned off for life.”

  37. Madrugador April 21st, 2014 at 1:37 pm

While I am a health care person, I am not an orthopedic surgeon but I am guessing that the severity of the tear influences the outcome of a non operative approach. Could have been that Wainwright had a small tear whereas someone else might have a partial tear which left the tendon hanging by a thread.

  38. Shame Spencer April 21st, 2014 at 1:42 pm

Wow.. they could definitely be related!

    Shame,

The Red Sox aren’t the threat in the division to me. I think they’ll have a WS hangover and they’re gonna miss Ells who I love. I think the O’s have the best offense/lineup in the division (especially when Machado and JJ Hardy return). If they did something nutty like trade for Cliff Lee, I think they could take the division.

I love how their GM waited out Nelson Cruz and got him for a song. They have a long lineup.

  58. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 2:30 pm

  61. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 2:38 pm

early season returns have the yankees with a higher OPS than baltimore and the O’s with a lower ERA than the yankees….

  62. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 2:41 pm

the white sox lead the majors in runs! (106)
they also lead in runs allowed (also 106!)

  63. G. Love April 21st, 2014 at 2:41 pm

    Y’s,

Not surprised by the OPS since they are missing Machado and Hardy who they are getting back. The ERA thing is a bit of a shocker although with the way the pen imploded this weekend a couple of times along with Nova pitching hurt it makes sense.

I think if the O’s get back the guys on the DL and if we don’t add a big bat, they’ll out OPS us this year. I’d be stunned though if they pitched better than us without additions.

  64. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 2:43 pm

sorry i had that wrong, the diamondbacks have given up 129 runs.
white sox lead both runs and runs allowed in the AL

  65. Shame Spencer April 21st, 2014 at 2:43 pm

The O’s haven’t done a lot over the past decade, but they certainly stick to their off season plans.. the last 2-3 years this team has looked pretty good, just needing a couple of upgrades to be a real contender. I think they might have it this year and agree if they get a pitcher they’ll be more dangerous. I also thought they’d end up with Santana. If they continue to stay competitive, it could be easier for them to haul in more FA’s.

  66. Shame Spencer April 21st, 2014 at 2:45 pm

It really is hard to believe the O’s have a .500 record without Machado or Hardy. I hope they end up with more injuries lol, cause I don’t like the idea of them fully healthy.

  67. mick April 21st, 2014 at 2:45 pm

Tommy Hunter is a huge ?????

  68. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 2:47 pm

jiminez: 6.76, norris: 4.42, chen (before today): 4.76, and gonzalez 6.28.

they are gonna kill that bullpen before it even gets hot out.

I dunno what the O’s system looks like exactly, but last time I checked their rankings they had 3-4 of their top prospects listed as pitchers.

  73. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 2:50 pm

considering where they put themselves this offseason, that’s not a bad move for the mets. he’s better than what they are throwing out there so far.

granderson has been a huge bust so far, which doesnt help.

  74. mick April 21st, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Let the RS, O’s and TB beat the crap out of each other. Marathon games.

We will run off 4-5 in a row then lose a game here and there…

    We are taking this division.

  75. Shame Spencer April 21st, 2014 at 2:52 pm

Here is their top 20 prospect list according to Minor League Baseball.com. I’m sure there are other rankings out there but Google spit this one at me first lol, so take it with however many grains of salt you’d like:

    1) Kevin Gausman, RHP, Grade A: Borderline A-. He was rushed to the majors, but his fastball and changeup are outstanding pitches, the makeup is excellent, and I am optimistic that the breaking stuff will come along just fine.

    2) Dylan Bundy, RHP, Grade A-: Basically we have to wait around and see how Tommy John recovery goes.

    3) Eduardo Rodriguez, LHP, Grade B: Velocity seems to rise a notch each year and he finished very strong in Double-A. He doesn’t turn 21 until April and I think he needs another year in the high minors, but he could become a mid-rotation starter.
    4) Hunter Harvey, RHP, Grade B: Borderline B+: OK now that looks weird, having Harvey behind Rodriguez but with Harvey having a “borderline” notation that Rodriguez doesn’t get. This is because I am undecided here frankly. I am certain that I am going to rate Rodriguez as a B. But Harvey I am undecided on, and if I go with B+ he will move a notch ahead of Eduardo. The thing here is that Rodriguez is more proven, but I think Harvey may have a higher ceiling. I’ll revisit this when I work on the Top 50 pitchers list.

    5) Henry Urrutia, OF, Grade B: Borderline B-. Aggressive grade for someone who turns 27 next month, but I think his power is going to blossom this year and I already like his pure hitting skills.
    6) Jonathan Schoop, INF, Grade B-: Very good glove at second base, throwing arm is good enough for short although range there isn’t as good. I think his power will increase as well although this is not a guy who is going to hit .300.
    7) Michael Ohlman, C, Grade B-: I love this bat. Although I don’t see him hitting .300+ at higher levels, I expect the power to maintain, if not increase. Questions about ultimate position and desire to see him hit in Double-A prevent a higher grade at this time.

    8) Mike Wright, RHP, Grade B-: Eats innings and throws strikes with solid-but-not-spectacular stuff. I don’t see why he can’t be a good fourth starter if he continues to throw strikes. Think Jeff Suppan as a possible outcome.

    9) Chance Sisco, C, Grade B-: Scouting reports indicate that he should hit for average with OBP skills and potential for moderate power, which is backed up by the early rookie ball numbers (.371/.475/.464). Defense has potential as well. Could rank much higher next year.

    10) Tim Berry, LHP, Grade C+: Although scouting reports are more enthusiastic this year, Berry’s ’13 season was not much different performance-wise than his ’12 as his component ratios remained very similar. FIPs were virtually identical and he was pitching at the same level. Ability to throw strikes with fastball/curveball/changeup makes him a potential fourth starter.

    11) Parker Bridwell, RHP, Grade C+: Don’t be deceived by 4.73 ERA in Low-A: he made a lot of progress in ’13, with large improvement in strikeout ratio and much better command in last few starts, 37/10 K/BB in last 36 innings. Has always thrown hard and if command is coming around, he’ll take a large step forward in ’14.

    12) Zach Davies, RHP, Grade C+: Another potential fourth starter type, very similar statistically to Wright but three years younger and six inches shorter. Excellent pitchability, posted 132/38 K/BB in 149 innings in High-A at age 20. Does not have Bridwell’s physical upside but more polished.

    13) Branden Kline, RHP, Grade C+: University of Virginia product missed most of season with leg injury. When healthy, can get up to 95 MPH and has a good slider. Potential number three starter although some scouts prefer him in relief.

    14) Stephen Tarpley, LHP, Grade C+: Very athletic, live-armed lefty posted 2.14 ERA with 25/3 K/BB in 21 innings in rookie ball after being drafted in third round from Arizona community college. Good upside if other factors don’t get in the way.

    15) Adrian Marin, SS, Grade C+: Borderline C. Excellent defensive shortstop with range, arm strength, and reliability all standing out. Not a great hitter at this point, .265/.311/.356 in Low-A, but he is young at age 19 and he could develop into an Adam Everett type and have a long career.

    16) Josh Hart, OF, Grade C+: Borderline C. Supplemental first round pick from Georgia high school shows excellent speed and makes an effort to work counts, although .218/.302/.286 line in rookie ball shows that there is a lot of work to do.

    17) Christian Walker, 1B, Grade C+: Borderline C. Polished University of South Carolina product ripped A-ball pitching, hit .300/.362/.453 overall despite Double-A slump. Scouts wonder if he’ll have enough power for a big league first baseman.

    18) Drew Dosch, 3B, Grade C: Showed fine pure hitting skills at Youngstown State leading to selection in seventh round, but didn’t make pro debut due to knee injury. Home run power is questioned, but he’s expected to hit for average and get on base at a good clip.

    19) Tyler Wilson, RHP, Grade C: Prototype Grade C pitching prospect, throws strikes with average stuff, non-great but not terrible numbers in Double-A (4.09 ERA, 118/47 K/BB), eats innings. Fifth starter or relief option.

    20) Trey Mancini, 1B, Grade C; and Conor Bierfeldt, OF, Grade C: A tie, which I’ve never done before but what the hell. College hitters from ’13 draft, Mancini from Notre Dame and Biefeldt from Western Connecticut, both hit extremely well in the New York-Penn League with wRC+ marks of 160 and 161. We need to see at higher levels but the NY-P is not the Pioneer League and both performed well enough to qualify as sleeper prospects. You could make a case to slot most of the “other” guys here, but I wanted to point out these two.

    Blake–
My condolences over your loss. I have had to put down 5 dogs and 13 cats in the span of my marriage. I loved them all and it never gets easier. Just remember what a wonderful life you provided for the pet, and realize that their suffering was short compared to how long they lived happily with you.

  78. Ys Guy April 21st, 2014 at 2:57 pm

The Orioles have dylan bundy and kevin gaussman in the minors which is part of why they didnt go after pitchers in the offseason. however they are both pretty young.

Gaussman is 22 and had a few starts in the majors last year, so clearly they are hoping for help from him this season.

Bundy is only 20 but they might be thinking of “going cardinal’ with him and trying him in the bullpen before the year is out.

From now on my approach will be to just assumed guys have had it or are on the DL for 6 months from it, rather than expecting them to be pitching and stuff.

It really is hard to believe the O’s have a .500 record without Machado or Hardy. I hope they end up with more injuries lol, cause I don’t like the idea of them fully healthy.

I agree with your view as they look like the Baltimore Bombers who can score quickly with the long ball. Last year, the Yankees with only 144 round trippers had trouble keeping the line moving and only averaged 4 runs a game. I hope that this year’s team can be more clutch with RISP, and our pitching holds up as the more time that Ichiro, Gardner and Ellsbury play together, I wonder if our RBI’s and home runs will mirror last years output.

Condolences Blake. This year I had to bury my two cats in the garden. I once pondered why our pets have limited lifespans, compared to their owners, us. The thought came to me that they have much to teach us about life and love… and especially death.

He might be back in the fold for August-September, but you’re probably right. Depends on a lot of variables.

Still… maybe we should start sticking pins in voodoo dolls dressed as Orioles.

We did not cruise with our kids until they were elementary aged. They traveled as babies, just not on a ship. My husband??s parents insisted on a giant family cruise when his siblings?? children were babies. It was horrible. They cried through every dinner in the main dining room, and my mother-in-law insisted they be at the table and stay. Our wait staff was not amused as well as the other diners around us. I felt so badly for those little ones being forced into such a situation.

ANDY: As a kid in Arizona, I was a skateboarder and outside the mainstream. At school I wasn’t involved in all the stuff that the other kids were. I always wanted to do something else. My parents encouraged it: Don’t think about being a doctor or a lawyer. Just use your creative skills to build something. And in college at Arizona State University, I started an advertising agency with a friend of mine. In 1986 we were named one of the top 50 new businesses in Arizona by Phoenix Magazine. It was kind of funny. Kate and I were dating at the time.

He asked several Toronto retailers if they would object to him buying tickets and then exchanging the unused, unscratched tickets. “Everybody said that would be totally fine. Nobody was even a tiny bit suspicious,” he says. “Why not? Because they all assumed the games are unbreakable. So what I would try to do is buy up lots of tickets, run them through my scanning machine, and then try to return the unscratched losers. Of course, you could also just find a retailer willing to cooperate or take a bribe. That might be easier.”

If you are looking for the most upscale feeling I would have to say Perimeter Mall. It has valet service, great restaurants, and all the top stores. It feels high end when you walk around inside. I have not been to Cumberland Mall since its remodel. If you are in the Cobb County area, it is a good place for practicality though.
