Billings to the DL; Claiborne recalled from AAA

BillingsClaiborneThe Yankees just announced that they’ve placed long reliever Bruce Billings on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm.

To replace him on the roster, the team has recalled Preston Claiborne from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Billings came up on Thursday to provide a fresh arm capable of throwing multiple innings, and he did just that when Hiroki Kuroda couldn’t get through the fifth inning on Friday. Claiborne, who had a brutal spring training, has now been effective in two major-league games this season. He was actually optioned to make room for Billings on Thursday, but he’s allowed to return after just two days because he’s replacing an injured player.

I guess they pushed Billings beyond his limit, making him take one for the team unless it was a paper move. Claiborne looks like the old Claiborne, so far so good.

    Tar –

I believe he would just be a free agent.

The 3b market next year is currently Headley, Ramirez and Sandoval so Choi would be interesting in that he’s younger than all three and wouldn’t come with draft pick compensation attached. Of course, on the flip side it’s harder sometimes for international position players to come over to the majors than it is for pitchers.

That said, a 27-year old 3b with power and speed would be a nice addition and Alex would be the regular DH.

What a fortunate coincidence that the player they wanted to send down got “injured” so they could bring back Claiborne. I wonder if Claiborne will return the favor one day

Talk about taking things out of context.
Why bother comparing Ellsbury and Cano at this point?
Let’s let the season play out , then decide.
If we win a championship, Cano will be forgotten.

I like Ellsbury as a player and am really talking about the Yankees changing the make up of the team away from the long ball to more of a team that depends on keeping the wheel turning. The Angels came into the Stadium that was built for the long ball with double the home runs then the Yankees had, and the Yankees were just a few home runs ahead of the Royals who were the lowest in the league. It is hard for an old timer like me to accept this demise of The Bronx Bombers, but as you say, if this is the right way to win a championship or even comes close, who am I to doubt the wisdom of the Yankee management.

Hank, it is fun to watch the home run hitters, but look at the Yankees record since the year 2000. They loaded their lineups with big time hitters and had tons of runs and home runs but only one championship to show for it. I am so sick of hearing about Drew and Morales and blaming the system for them not having jobs.
McCann found a job. Ellsbury found a job. Cruz got a contract, and being he was suspended for roids he got more than he deserves. Same with the Cards SS.

Seems zero blame goes to the player and their agent for maybe asking a lot more than those players are worth?

  6. Jerkface April 27th, 2014 at 2:48 pm

Korean league has the posting system, unless Choi has played enough to be granted international free agency. Just looking at his histroy he has been a player in the KBO since he is 18 so he undoubtedly has played enough to have free agency internationally unless the KBO is even more restrictive than the NPB.

  7. yankeefeminista April 27th, 2014 at 2:49 pm

The problem has been that the “big time hitters” recently have been past their prime, whereas in mid 2000′s they didn’t have the pitching. You need both to succeed at the highest level.

  8. RadioKev April 27th, 2014 at 3:08 pm

I was amazed the Red Sox even made Drew the QO, never mind when he turned it down. Really can’t sympathize for a player turning down a massive over pay.

It wasn’t a massive overpay. Any 1 year deal is an extremely team friendly contract. If Drew did not have any draft pick compensation attached to him he would have got a multiyear deal easy. Just look at Peralta. Drew hit nearly as good as him and is a better defender and Peralta got 4 years.

I know it sucks to talk about the money these guys get offered as being ‘not enough’ when most of us make much much less, but you really have to think of the market value of the player and the norm for contracts.

Tim in Trenton, I’m really sorry to hear about the difficulties you have in getting around to the ballpark.

I suppose I could do something with satellite, but the hours aren’t really conducive to watching live. I do watch the MLB recap in the AM and update détails through the press and Lohud and RAB. I’m also a very active retiree – we travel a lot and I have a few daytime hobbies that keep me on the go.

Yes, I’ll be in the States for three weeks and going to quite a number of games. Besides our annual family picnic, the games we go to together are a blast. As the oldest of 7 kids, I helped to raise them right – they are, of course, all Yankee fans.

Stay around, Tim, offer your comments and scroll by the people whose main occupation on here (and probably in life) is to just complain. By the way, speaking of complaining, I’m still annoyed at George Weiss for being a niggardly, uncaring old SOB and Webb and Topping for running the Yanks down in the 60′s before selling them off to CBS. I wonder where the historical gripe department is located?

Good night all. Go Tanaka – go Yanks!

Draft pick compensation is bad. It definitively hurts the players its attached to when those players have very little choice in the matter. For some players, if they are good enough, the draft pick matters very little. Cano, Choo, McCann, and Ellsbury were getting contracts no matter what. The problem is when the middle tier guys have draft pick compensation attached to them that it is an issue. Nelson Cruz definitely should have got a multiyear deal and he settled for a very undermarket deal. Ervin Santana should have got a multiyear deal and had to settle.

Morales is a good hitter and Drew is a legit major league short stop that can hit. They should have gotten multiyear deals. And the multiyear deals do not have to equal the AAV of the QO to be worth it. The whole thing is that these guys would rather make 3/36 than 1/14.

  12. jmills April 27th, 2014 at 3:19 pm

yf, pitching and hitting, I had it in spades once upon a time.

  13. RadioKev April 27th, 2014 at 3:22 pm

I’m definitely not going for the whole ‘athletes are overpaid’ thing (and I don’t think they’re overpaid, they generate the value, after all).

I don’t look at Drew as a $10m/yr player. I haven’t crunched the numbers or anything, but he’s been hampered by injuries/an injury risk, and he’s on the wrong side of 30. If someone is willing to pay $14m+ for a year of Drew, I think they are overpaying him.

Guaranteed money today is worth more than guaranteed money tomorrow. I’d have taken the big deal and played for the next contract. I know and appreciate that players value security, but, in my eyes, he didn’t bet on himself. Hard to respect that from an athlete.

It is a little silly that the Red Sox or Yankees haven’t signed him, but that tells you how much those teams actually value him versus a lotto ticket.

  14. RadioKev April 27th, 2014 at 3:23 pm

Nelson Cruz would have had a multi-year if he wasn’t suspended for PED use.

  15. jmills April 27th, 2014 at 3:25 pm

Tim in Trenton, I’m lucky and fully able, but can hardly bother dealing with the masses at games. The profanity and behaviour pattern is disappointing. Btw, Trenton is a town in, Ontario. It has the aircraft military base. Nice town to stop at on the way to Tweed. Avril Lavigne is from out that way :D

The Yankees gave Ellsbury 22 million a year and he has been just as hampered by injuries. Drew is a really good short stop and thats a premium position. In no way is any 1 year deal for a premium position player that can hit above league average an overpay.

Look at you, calling 1/14 “the big deal”. Its not the big deal. Its an undermarket deal for what he is. Peralta got 4/53 and he is 32 and is inconsistent. I really disagree with anyone who is blaming Drew & Morales when we don’t know what offers they have received or turned down.

The only deals we know they turned down were 1 year 14 million and those had to be accepted within the first week of free agency. If you have 5 months to sign a contract, why would you settle in the first week?

    Enjoy!

Weather permitting, it looks like you’ll see Young vs. CC and Felix vs. Kuroda . . .
hopefully, Felix will be a bit more “king-like” than he was in his last two starts ;-)

and will miss Elias vs. Phelps . . .
Elias is the young Cuban rookie who has been making the most of the chance he’s gotten due to the plethora of pitching injuries the M’s have suffered (3/5′s of their season’s projected starting rotation on the DL)

  21. Jerkface April 27th, 2014 at 3:28 pm

Nelson Cruz would have had a multi-year if he wasn’t suspended for PED use.

Peralta got multi year and he didn’t have draft pick compensation attached. Cruz is a pretty good hitter.

If the qualifying offer worked like the old arbitration compensation, it would be a lot better than currently implemented. under that system the player could always accept the arbitration at any point. In the new system they have a week at the very beginning of FA to decide. Now if you gave them the entire offseason to accept the qualifying offer, that’d be a lot better.

They should get rid of the draft pick thing as a whole though, or at least remove the draft pick LOSS from the signing team. Give the team that offers it something, hell give em 2 compensation picks, but by forcing a penalty above and beyond the contract dollars paid it hurts the value of the players.

Jerkface, your point regarding the acceptance time window is a fair one. It does seem rigged against free agents.

Of course there’s a point where a 1yr deal for an above average player is an overpay. I don’t know what number you decide that is, $20m or whatever, but Drew is not worth $14m PER year. He could still come out ahead if he signed a deal like that, and got another multi-year deal next year, versus a theoretical multi-year deal this offseason.

I’ve seen your arguments about Cano’s contract as a matter of PER YEAR value, not overall guaranteed money. Seems to be picking and choosing to me. I also don’t think the Peralta contract is a good one, and it was widely criticized around baseball at the time.

I don’t know, blame their agents for not knowing the market, then. Are teams colluding to hold down Drew and Morales’ price? It’s possible. No one thinks he’s worth what he & Boras thinks he’s worth.

  27. Ys Guy April 27th, 2014 at 3:39 pm

responding to this morning’s comments, i dont care that michael kay, who i dont really like very much, called out cano for not running out balls hit in play. when it’s a fact, the announcer can point it out, i dont care.

again that’s a decision cano made each time he hit a grounder and decided not to run it out. If he gets ‘called out’ for it, too bad, he decided not to run the ball out and the chances are good someone’s going to say something, especially in his walk year.

i never really held not running against robbie, most players do the same on a somewhat regular basis. while running out almost every ball is to me a big plus on jeter’s record, i dont dislike players who dont run em all out. the not diving complaint held no water in my book because cano was so great at scooping that ball and throwing across his body.

bottom line, i still like cano and wish he was a yankee, but i cant blame the yankees for not signing him, i wouldnt have either.

  30. Jerkface April 27th, 2014 at 3:51 pm

And what if he gets another QO the next year? He could be in an endless system of having to accept undervalue contracts until he becomes too old. Its a bad system.

And I’ve always said that you have to look at both the total years, the total money, and the AAV in a contract. People say that the Yankees actually offered a better contract to Cano because their AAV was 1 million more than the SEA deal, but clearly it was a worse offer because the total value was 80 million less.

  31. Jerkface April 27th, 2014 at 3:53 pm

. while running out almost every ball is to me a big plus on jeter’s record, i dont dislike players who dont run em all out

I like how you say ‘almost every ball’ with Jeter, because he does fail to run hard on grounders sometimes. What is the cut off for where it becomes a problem to be lambasted like with Cano and when its simply ignored like with Tex/Jeter/Beltran/Ellsbury/whomever?

  32. Jerkface April 27th, 2014 at 3:54 pm

My argument with Cano’s contract was always that the Yankees should have offered 200 million total value, so not sure what you mean about the per year value thing there.

  37. Ys Guy April 27th, 2014 at 4:02 pm

i think jeter has made a concious decision this year to not kill himself going down the line to first base on sure groundouts, he’s not slacking, but he’s not killing himself to get there either. i think its a wise decision.

the only other times i’ve seen jeter not run em all out are on nubbers or balls that he thought were foul. Still, over his career, he has stood head and shoulders above the rest for the constancy of his hustle.

with cano, it was very noticeable, because he would even do it on the back end of a double play, which is probably what brought the most ire his way. and once it’s noticed as in such a case, it’s just going to keep being noticed.

still, he wasn’t that much worse than the average major league player, so to me it was just a minor annoyance. at the same time, it’s a choice he made and if michael kay (or jim kaat or howie rose) choose to point that out, i have no problem with that either.

  38. Ys Guy April 27th, 2014 at 4:04 pm

that being said, the questioning of cano’s desire and work ethic because of his laconic style were very misplaced imo. you can’t get as good as he is without working your butt off to get that good and stay that good, and i think alot of people never gave him the credit that was due him.

  39. CountryClub April 27th, 2014 at 4:07 pm

Looks like Yanks will have a chance to pick up a game on the hole division tonight (except for Toronto because they beat the Sox. Obviously the standings don’t mean much this time of year, but the bigger they can make the lead, the better I guess.

  40. Jerkface April 27th, 2014 at 4:08 pm

still, he wasn’t that much worse than the average major league player, so to me it was just a minor annoyance. at the same time, it’s a choice he made and if michael kay (or jim kaat or howie rose) choose to point that out, i have no problem with that either.

But these two points are linked. Why specifically focus on it with Cano when it is not much worse than the average major leaguer? I don’t like these kinds of biases especially when its championed by the voice of the Yankees on TV. Its like David Ortiz getting his PED pass while A-rod is villified.

  41. tomingeorgia April 27th, 2014 at 4:09 pm

    Ys,
Cano is a very, very good player. He should have hired Derek’s PR man to improve his image and give him some advice.

i’d really like to see the boys take the bull by the horns here and establish themselves as the early front runners.

sunday night games in april vs. west coast teams count just as much as late september games in balamer.

  44. ac1 April 27th, 2014 at 4:13 pm

I do agree the system has to change.
But I still believe Drew is asking a lot more than he is worth.
The signing team should not be punished.
The losing team should get the pick.
And they should have more than a week, maybe a month.
They cannot have all winter, because teams need to know what they need.

  45. Ys Guy April 27th, 2014 at 4:15 pm

When cano dogged it, he really dogged it, beltran does it all the time but at least jogs like he means it.

and again, maybe its not fair that kay doesnt point it out with other players, but then again life’s not fair. if you dont want it pointed out, run the ball out, thats all.

again, it just never had much influence on my opinion of cano.

the system that’s set up is the only reason someone offered drew $14.1M in the first place. had he decided to accept it, he’d have ‘the system’ to thank for him getting 3 or 5 Million dollars more than he would otherwise have made.

but he decided not to accept it, so it’s working against him. That’s a buisness decision on his part, which im sure he’s regretting at this point.

but the system cuts both ways.

  48. Jerkface April 27th, 2014 at 4:20 pm

the system that’s set up is the only reason someone offered drew $14.1M in the first place. had he decided to accept it, he’d have ‘the system’ to thank for him getting 3 or 5 Million dollars more than he would otherwise have made.

No, this point is wrong. He would have got a multi year deal had he not had draft pick compensation attached. It might have been for a lower AAV than 14, but that 14 million would have been significantly less than he would have made.

Again this is my point, you can’t just look at the per year value of a contract unless the total years being offered are equal or the AAV and the Years are close to the same number.

  49. CountryClub April 27th, 2014 at 4:21 pm

The media will always have something to complain about. Right now, it’s the draft compensation system. If/when they change that, it’ll be something else.

This is really awesome. Guys generally increase their K rate as they move up the ladder. Adam Dunn strikes out a lot in the majors but he didn’t strike out that much in the minors. Guys who strike out as much as Sanchez did in the minors usually suffer for it in the majors. Cutting his K rate was a key to proving he can be a major league hitter, and he has done that marvelously!

Its really nice that one of our prospects is improving a weakness.

Don, I agree with you that the pitching is the key today, and when the Yanks had seven guys who could swing for the fences but lacked the pitching, they still played in October. My concern is can our two power guys pushing 40, Soriano and Beltran, hold up for an entire season, and The guy who is supposed to be our big power bat, Tex, at this point seems unable to generate the long ball from the left side. McCaan looks like the real deal for power, and Johnson maybe. The rest of the cast are table setters and not really RBI guys. If we had that “Murders Row and Cano” with these pitchers today, would are chances be better to win the division or is this offense more potent?

  54. Ys Guy April 27th, 2014 at 4:28 pm

i agree jf, but the system still did pump up the offer the red sox made for this year.

but here’s the thing. the system was in place prior to last season. he knew all season that he was probably going to get a Q.O., in face he greatly needed to have a season healthy enough to get him a Q.O.. and to his credit, while he did miss some time, he had a very good year and got the Q.O.

The system wasn’t going to change, they had to live with what had been agreed to in the cba. and it looks like the overestimated what teams were willing to pay for drew.

in the end what does it matter? he’ll sign somewhere the day after the draft and get back to those six figure paychecks.

JF, he has done a good job of hitting where the ball is pitched in the games I’ve attended and Sanchez is also doing a much better job hitting RHP this season, SSS but may it continue.

It annoys me that major league caliber players are being kept out of the majors. And while there may be some hubris involved on Drew’s side I don’t like the artificial impediment imposed on him by the QO system. I said it was a stupid system for the players when it was first announced, and its been proven to be a stupid system

The Players Association, which has made increasingly more stupid decisions, clearly dropped the ball if they were not able to analyze the issues with it when myself and multiple bloggers were able to do it when the CBA changes were first leaked.

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? Tretinoin is another treatment best used in conjunction with other treatments. Lots of research into the effects of Tretinoin has shown it has minimal effect on skin tone. Results improve drastically when used in conjunction with Sun block or Hydroquinone. I would avoid Hydroquinone and opt for Tretinoin with Sun block.

Mulberry leaf extract might reduce blood sugar and cholesterol, according to a study published in the February 2010 issue of the “Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.” In the lab animal study, doses of mulberry extract were administered for 21 days, leading to decreased fasting blood sugar, reduced glycosylated hemoglobi, and elevated levels of insulin and C peptide a molecule that assists in the assembly of insulin. Blood lipids were also restored to normal levels with mulberry supplementation. Several compounds extracted by the scientists show similar structure and properties to 1 deoxynojirimycin, the mulberry compound that has received the most research attention. With further study, these compounds might be found useful for incorporation into nutraceutical formulas. The study appeared in the September 2010 issue of the journal “Analytical Biochemistry.”
