TIME/TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN and WFAN

WEATHER: The skies have cleared up a bit, but it’s still pretty chilly. They’re saying 54 degrees, with temps dropping throughout the game.

UMPIRES: HP Bill Welke, 1B Dan Iassogna, 2B CB Bucknor, 3B Hal Gibson

LATE SCRATCH: Yangervis Solarte was a late scratch from the lineup due to a sore right shoulder. He’s been replaced at second base by Brian Roberts.

STRIKEOUT STUFF: Yankees pitchers have recorded at least 10 strikeouts in three consecutive games for the second time this season. They have not recorded 10 or more in four straight games since September of 2012.

A THOUSAND HERE, A THOUSAND THERE: Entering tonight’s game, Alfonso Soriano has 992 career hits in the AL and 1,077 career hits in the NL. With eight more hits, he’ll become the seventh player all-time with at least 1,000 hits in each league.

NOTE: I’ll be updating here every so often, but I’ll be much more active on Twitter. Follow me@vzmercogliano to join the conversation!

UPDATE, 9:04 p.m.: We have a pitchers’ duel on our hands through three innings. Tanaka has been good, although he’s already exceeded his previous season total with three walks, but Richards has been even better. He has four strikeouts to Tanaka’s five, but he’s been a bit more economical with 40 pitches (Tanaka is at 50). Still scoreless.

UPDATE, 9:23 p.m.: The Angels got a run in the fourth as Tanaka continues to put men on, but he limited the damage after loading the bases with one out. He’s allowed three hits and an uncharacteristic four walks, but has seven strikeouts. 1-0 Angels.

UPDATE, 9:57 p.m.: Tie ballgame. Tex walked, Roberts doubled to move him to third, and then he scored on Ichiro’s 6-3 ground out. 1-1 with Tanaka coming out for the sixth at 90 pitches.

UPDATE, 10:22 p.m.: Tanaka gave up a solo homer to Freese in the sixth to put the Angels ahead 2-1. He faced one batter in the seventh and picked up his 11th strikeout before being pulled in favor of Adam Warren.

UPDATE, 10:40 p.m.: Tex ties the game with a blast into the right field seats to lead off the bottom of the seventh. 2-2.

Sit down Alberto. Who needs to make the adjustment?

  10. pete2 April 27th, 2014 at 8:15 pm

Against the Red Sox I predicted 16 K. Didnt happen. Maybe this is the game. 2 down 14 to go

  11. J. Alfred Prufrock April 27th, 2014 at 8:15 pm

    Hai! Go Tananka-san!

exiled -I’d be careful giving your information out on this blog or with anyone who wants to exchange emails through the blog moderator. It’s just general advice, but sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem.

  12. pete2 April 27th, 2014 at 8:19 pm

ESPN announcers just getting worse and worse even with Morgan gone.

  13. UnKnown April 27th, 2014 at 8:19 pm

Second the advice above for sure.

I don’t think Jeter throws out Trout even if he gets to that ball. In fact he doesn’t. That is just a cap tip to Trout.

  14. exiledintampa April 27th, 2014 at 8:20 pm

What an awsome pitch that is.

  15. pete2 April 27th, 2014 at 8:20 pm

    Thats 3K

  16. SweetSpot April 27th, 2014 at 8:20 pm

Best hitting team in baseball? Three k’s. Ho hum. Another piece of maguro please.

“exiled -I’d be careful giving your information out on this blog or with anyone who wants to exchange emails through the blog moderator. It’s just general advice, but sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem.”

I know you’re not referring to me.

It pays to know what you’re talking about. And has been previously mentioned, you’ve been very free with accusations that you can’t back up, and also accusations that have been proven to be patently false. Maybe you should get out of the business of saying things you can’t back up.

Sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem, and other times they are exactly what they seem. Your accusing without actual knowledge is definitely one of the times that they are exactly what they seem. You don’t care who you hurt, do you.

  22. Ys Guy April 27th, 2014 at 8:22 pm

i think dan shulman calls a great ballgame.
he was stellar on the radio last offseason.

  23. exiledintampa April 27th, 2014 at 8:22 pm

Do fans still put up K’s along the railing anywhere? This is the guy to do it for.

  24. J. Alfred Prufrock April 27th, 2014 at 8:23 pm

Unknown – It’s a shame that it has to be that way, but NickinSF, Erica, and others can vouch for that, I’m sure.

They were so stalked, they felt they had to leave the blog. We’ll all find a way to get in touch with people we trust, if its’ meant to be.

  25. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 27th, 2014 at 8:23 pm

Actually I should have said you don’t care who you malign, do you.

  26. UnKnown April 27th, 2014 at 8:24 pm

Score 3 or 4 tonight and enjoy the off day tomorrow coming off another series winner.

    Pruf – Truth

  28. yankeefeminista April 27th, 2014 at 8:25 pm

exiled, Absolutely they do. A great tradition.

  29. Brock April 27th, 2014 at 8:25 pm

I hope the Yanks show some patience against Richards tonight. He can be really wild.

  30. luis April 27th, 2014 at 8:25 pm

    Good evening guys,

    Late as usual..How was Tanaka’s 1st inning?

  31. UnKnown April 27th, 2014 at 8:26 pm

Do fans still put up K’s along the railing anywhere? This is the guy to do it for.
    ———–

I think so, but nothing can top when that one fan was putting them around his head in the game that Tanaka pitched against the Cubbies.

    That was awesome!

  32. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 27th, 2014 at 8:26 pm

“He was also referring to you, Trisha. :(

Also referring to me? He was clearly referring to me.

  33. SweetSpot April 27th, 2014 at 8:26 pm

Garrett Richards is an excellent pitcher; he’s the very type of hard thrower we have trouble with.

  34. pete2 April 27th, 2014 at 8:27 pm

If this kid has any command at all he is going to be tough tonight. Kind of what I imagine Betances could be as a starter

  35. yankeefeminista April 27th, 2014 at 8:27 pm

    Unknown, QFT!

  36. chicken_stanley April 27th, 2014 at 8:28 pm

    Hola Luis.

Trout with a hit in the 5 hole; bb to Kendrick; Tanaka 3 k’s.

Even with the hit and walk I thought Tanaka looked very sharp

  37. UnKnown April 27th, 2014 at 8:28 pm

It’s cool. We will get some runs tonight. I think Brock is on to something, have to draw some walks and then KABOOM comes the big blow.

  38. SweetSpot April 27th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

97 with that movement? Sick! Going to be a long night.

  39. Brock April 27th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

If they can get Richards in the stretch, he will begin to fall apart. Just gotta get some guys on base. Maybe next inning.

  40. j9d April 27th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

Turned mute on. Kruk is unwatchable (listenable??). I lasted an inning w volume on. Better than i expected with this crew.

  41. J. Alfred Prufrock April 27th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

    primo :D,

    You have mail.

  42. luis April 27th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

    pete,

He just needs control to be effective…This guy has lots of late movement…Betances would be a lot harder to face, because he is taller

  43. JimK April 27th, 2014 at 8:30 pm

JAP, I agree with your advice about releasing personal information, I just hope you were not referring to my posts, but whether you were or not I will refrain from any posts which may be considered a commentary on any individual’s personal affairs.

  44. chicken_stanley April 27th, 2014 at 8:30 pm

unknown – the pic you posted of the guy with the kkkkkk’s on his head was hilarious… Wonder if he’s there tonight?

  45. jlyanks85 April 27th, 2014 at 8:30 pm

Going to be a long night against Richards. Looked to have unhittable stuff in that 1st inning.

  46. UnKnown April 27th, 2014 at 8:31 pm

I know right. It was so funny. I got to try and find that pic again.

  47. UnKnown April 27th, 2014 at 8:35 pm

If need be which I don’t think it will, but I am certain MT can match Richy Rich zero for zero tonight.

  48. luis April 27th, 2014 at 8:36 pm

Got it primo…Thanks…I will answer later on ;)

  49. J. Alfred Prufrock April 27th, 2014 at 8:36 pm

    JimK,

I was doing no such thing. I gave exiled some general advice, not referencing anyone’s posts.

We have a hacker among us who has chased people off this blog and put up their private information on this site, as well as fictions about their family members, etc. he moves freely in here under various usernames and has allies on the blog, so vigilance is very important.

Last year, when Rivera’s last home game was coming up, he pretended to be someone who was offering to make copies of the final game for everyone and “just need your emails” to do his magnanimous deed. When I saw people saying, “Oh, that’s so generous of you, sure, I’ll give Chad the nod to give you my email,” I decided to speak up.

It’s general advice. I don’t care what views one holds or who’s on what side of what debate here, and all that other nonsense. We all have a right to a place to post about baseball without having to worry about some venal presence preying on our private lives, children, family members, etc.

That’s all I have to say on that subject, but thanks for helping me clarify my intent.

  50. Brock April 27th, 2014 at 8:37 pm

    TanaKKKKa!!!

  51. NYY fan in NH April 27th, 2014 at 8:37 pm

Walking Iannetta wasn’t good. He’s not commanding so far

  52. I am Brett Godner April 27th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

2 walks. Tanaka is played. Trade him while,he still has some value.

  53. SweetSpot April 27th, 2014 at 8:39 pm

One would think with Tanaka pitching this blog would be focused on the game.

  54. luis April 27th, 2014 at 8:40 pm

    YF,

If you are still around..I got your mail as well..I will give the required information to that person with pleasure… I’ll do it on Monday from the office

  55. Brock April 27th, 2014 at 8:42 pm

Yankee hitters looking terrible so far. Take a pitch or two…geez.

  56. luis April 27th, 2014 at 8:42 pm

This could be a long night if this kid keeps this up

  57. JimK April 27th, 2014 at 8:42 pm

JAP, thanks for the clarification and as an infrequent visitor to this site I was unaware of the incidents to which you refer. I personally do not understand why anyone would engage in the juvenile behavior you describe, which seems more appropriate to a HS blog than a baseball blog.

  58. NYY fan in NH April 27th, 2014 at 8:42 pm

Yankees are swinging at everything and not taking a few pitches

  59. JimK April 27th, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Back to BB, the Y’s have yet to put a quality swing on Richards.

  60. pete2 April 27th, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Swinging at too many pitches out of the zone.

  61. SweetSpot April 27th, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Richards looks unhittable so far, we aren’t getting deep into counts at all he is controlling the pace and we are just getting weak hacks. 26 pitches in 2 IP.

  62. Brock April 27th, 2014 at 8:44 pm

That was ugly. Tanaka is going to need to be sharp this inning. Yanks will get to Richards soon enough.

  63. J. Alfred Prufrock April 27th, 2014 at 8:45 pm

    JimK, you bet.

  64. SweetSpot April 27th, 2014 at 8:45 pm

He looks impressive, works fast throws hard with great movement. He has some future if he keeps this up.

  65. ac1 April 27th, 2014 at 8:45 pm

Tex could really do himself and the team a favor and turn into a full time right handed hitter…

  66. I am Brett Godner April 27th, 2014 at 8:45 pm

The has to be a way to convince tex to stop switch “hitting” and just be a full time right hander. It’s so hard to watch his lefty swing.

  67. luis April 27th, 2014 at 8:46 pm

But Betances who has way better stuff and is as effectively wild is just a BP arm…How coherent

  68. SweetSpot April 27th, 2014 at 8:47 pm

Bear down Tanaka, this will be tough.

  69. pete2 April 27th, 2014 at 8:47 pm

That 2 seamer of Tanakas gets hit hard when he leaves it up

  70. JimK April 27th, 2014 at 8:48 pm

I realize Gardner is out due to a slight injury, but he is the only Y who make Richards throw strikes.

  71. NYY fan in NH April 27th, 2014 at 8:48 pm

this may not be his night.. This is a tough spot early in the game. Bear down!!

  72. ac1 April 27th, 2014 at 8:48 pm

    luis April 27th, 2014 at 8:46 pm

    This again?
    Betances was a starter.
He was not good, and couldn’t keep it together for an entire game.
He can be a killer closer though

  73. J. Alfred Prufrock April 27th, 2014 at 8:49 pm

No one’s going to convince Tex, unless we move the RF fence back.

Even with his awful swing, he’ll still punish some middling fastballs left-handed, especially at home. They’re never going to make a LHB with power bat soley RH.

Although I’d be on board! :D

Can’t imagine where we would be without him

    _______

The Yankees gave it a shot with Betances as a starter for quite a while and it didn’t work. He’s starting to fulfill his potential as a relief pitcher, nothing wrong with that. I don’t think being starter is in the cards for him.

  85. NYY fan in NH April 27th, 2014 at 8:52 pm

ac1.. He just doesn’t have the command and the pitches are piling up early. Nice K of Trout there. That’s a big out!

  86. bbb51 April 27th, 2014 at 8:52 pm

Kruk is a fool. “Tanaka doesn’t throw splitters for strikes”.

    LOL

  107. NYY fan in NH April 27th, 2014 at 8:56 pm

Nice DP to get out of it. He’s gonna have to gut this out unless he’s got something physically wrong. Girardi was on the phone to the pen. Who knows

I wonder if he is just nibbling a bit more out of respect for the Angels and hoping to stay away from the HR ball. Basically accepting a few more walks for fewer HR

  114. UnKnown April 27th, 2014 at 8:58 pm

    This again?
    Betances was a starter.
He was not good, and couldn’t keep it together for an entire game.
He can be a killer closer though
    ///

The Yankee FO was split on the decision, and Cashman said the only reason they did it was because he was out of options.

There are people who feel he should go back to starting, now that he’s been more consistent from the stretch and because he has a plus arsenal of like six pitches.

It’s no slam dunk that he should never return to starting, and as someone who has watched him start about 14 times, I am in the Betances should start, camp.

Just because the Yankees decided to put him in the BP doesn’t mean he should remain there.

Betances himself said he had begun to figure things out as a starter and was disappointed he couldn’t see it through.

His last start he threw five no hit innings and despite four BBs, he gave up no runs. He was scattering his BBs in his last few starts, and was also the victim of some atrocious infield defense. He was much more uniform, getting over his front side well, he had already begun to assimilate what he was learning as a starter. It’s worth another look because he’s potentially a front-end arm.

Just like they did with Brackman, etc. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out. I think they have done an exemplary job helping him make the transition to the pen. Go read about it, I have no desire to convert people but when they make things up, that’s when I respond. And I didn’t see you complaining about SSS when everyone was quoting Montero’s numbers… But now they wouldn’t bother with the larger SS of a .967 And I don’t see you complaining when BigDan writes tomes on SSS MiLB players. At least in this case the SSS was related to adjustments and a premature conversion at the point when adjustments had been made.

Definitely during ST. Also in the offseason some do, but I believe they get a notice sent by registered mail and have to report for testing within 7 days. This allows them time to clear their system and pass unless they are foolish to use some of the longer acting steroids

I take back what I said about Tanaka earlier. He may have had command issues, but he came back and left with a 2.25 era. 11 K’s is no joke. He’s a stud and when he doesn’t have his best stuff early, he certainly gets better as the game goes on. That’s an ace in my opinion. It’s early, but I like his makeup. 523. Brock April 27th, 2014 at 10:58 pm

Please allow me to comment on this Rule9 character and I would ask you to listen. He/she isn’t here to talk baseball, they are the very definition of a troll. The objective is to get you to engage him, that’s what makes the troll engine run, it’s what feeds them and gets them off. If no one ever responded, they would leave. That is certain. Please do not engage him.

Also, in defense of LoHud, he is likely using an easily available VPN which lets you change your IP address at will. There is nothing they can do about it. When LoHud bans one screen name and e-mail (based on the IP address) they just start another. If there is no criminal activity where law enforcement will get involved you just have to ignore them. Do not feed the trolls, they live for that

    Yeah, their pitcher hit him!

  601. mick April 27th, 2014 at 11:16 pm

sterling is the worst, that’s why they put him on the radio

  602. jlyanks85 April 27th, 2014 at 11:17 pm

What is with the replay system using sound? You need to actually see what’s going on in order to make a decision, like what they do in the NFL.

  603. Brock April 27th, 2014 at 11:17 pm

An insurance run sure would be nice, especially considering they lead the league in HR.

  604. UnKnown April 27th, 2014 at 11:17 pm

2.5 up in the East with a win. Not to bad. I’d like to stretch that to 5 by the end of May.

  605. pete2 April 27th, 2014 at 11:18 pm

    Brock April 27th, 2014 at 11:14 pm

This replay should not be taking this long.
    ==============

Didnt look like it hit him but they probably ruled it was too close to call (inconclusive). Umps usually hear rather than see such HBP

  606. yankeefeminista April 27th, 2014 at 11:18 pm

We’ve got a ton of road games in May, so need to load up at home.

  607. Captain Clutch April 27th, 2014 at 11:18 pm

Hopefully Soriano can get the runner in from 3rd here. He usually struggles in these spots because he swings at anything in sight.

  608. luis April 27th, 2014 at 11:19 pm

Sori needs to shorten that swing up

  609. Hankflorida April 27th, 2014 at 11:19 pm

It’s a good way to manufacture runs as the pitchers spend more time worrying about Ellsbury then pitching to the batter.

  610. Ken Phelps April 27th, 2014 at 11:19 pm

However, just hearing Sutcliffe talk drives me nuts, doesn’t matter what he’s saying.

  612. ac1 April 27th, 2014 at 11:19 pm

  613. Ken Phelps April 27th, 2014 at 11:20 pm

  614. Captain Clutch April 27th, 2014 at 11:20 pm

Soriano is absolutely the worst in those spots.

  615. pete2 April 27th, 2014 at 11:20 pm

  626. SluggerBro April 27th, 2014 at 11:22 pm

Good job Soriano! Strikes out like crazy but when there are runners on base? DOUBLE PLAY!

  627. Captain Clutch April 27th, 2014 at 11:22 pm

  748. seo plugin September 12th, 2014 at 1:51 am

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
