Ellsbury sore hand; Pineda tight lat

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Apr 29, 2014 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Jacoby Ellsbury is out of the lineup with a sore hand. Tests showed no damage, but Joe Girardi said Ellsbury’s hand has been “bothering him for a few days.”

Bigger issue might be Michael Pineda.

Throwing a sim game in Tampa, Pineda pulled himself after one inning because of tightness in his lat. He will go for an MRI and Girardi said Pineda’s planned start coming up is in jeopardy.

Good on you Robbie. Way to think of the kids. #classy

But Robbie was selfish an didn’t care about anyone but himself lol

  3. CountryClub April 29th, 2014 at 4:11 pm

At least he didnt try to pitch through it. Hopefully he didnt do any real damage.

  5. Chip April 29th, 2014 at 4:13 pm

Fancy way of saying he was a little tight in his back. It happens. It’s a long long way from the shoulder – that’s the big thing.

  6. Tackelberry April 29th, 2014 at 4:13 pm

where exactly is the lat muscle?

  7. UnKnown April 29th, 2014 at 4:14 pm

CC – That’s what I said as well. Smart to just shut it down right away.

AAO – We currently have children present here or at the very least a child and they can’t handle any sense of truth or reality. Keep that in mind.

    See y’all later.

Now if he does that at every stadium he visits, I’ll be impressed. But if it’s just at Ys Stadium, seeing he’s no longer a Yankee, I would have to find it a bit contrived. Unless of course these are Seattle kids he’s flown over. Sounds more to me like his PR people went into overdrive.

Sorry, but that’s how it sounds to me.

Hope the game gets in today scored some tickets behind home plate section 119.

Anyone have YES on and just see that ridiculous infomercial for “Flex Shot” with Billy Mays Redux as the host… Dude was blasting a boat with a cannon and then sealing the holes with that caulking product to prove it would still float… lol I dunno why but I was just cracking up to that.

I will keep that in mind

NOBODY could have predicted this one. Nope, certainly not me

  14. CountryClub April 29th, 2014 at 4:23 pm

somebody predicted that a starting pitcher may go on the DL? I don’t believe it.

Does anyone know if Tanaka is starting Friday or Sat?

  16. CountryClub April 29th, 2014 at 4:24 pm

regarding pineda, just be happy it’s not his shoulder or elbow.

    ——————-

Saturday. But not sure what happens if tomorrow gets rained out. It could be Sunday if they move everyone back a day. Or it could still be Saturday if they decide to skip Nuno.

  18. Triple Short of a Cycle April 29th, 2014 at 4:28 pm

Cueto had 3 DL stints and was out months last year with a lat pull

  19. Tackelberry April 29th, 2014 at 4:28 pm

Hope they get this game in tonight cause tommorrow’s forecast looks much worse. Don’t think the Mariners come in again this year, so Thursday is looking like another day night DH

  20. Russell Munson April 29th, 2014 at 4:32 pm

Ellsbury must have injured his hand when he crashed into Adrian Beltre.

  21. Patrick April 29th, 2014 at 4:35 pm

somebody predicted that a starting pitcher may go on the DL? I don’t believe it.

True, and true its good that this isn’t his elbow or shoulder. But muscle strains in the area he has it can take a long time to heal properly. I guess it’s a good thing that this happened while he was suspended so he has some extra time to heal?

  22. bigdan22 April 29th, 2014 at 4:35 pm

Don’t like the sound of a hand issue for Ellsbury. I also don’t like the team constantly playing with a short bench. If this is going to be a few days, DL Ellsbury and call up Almonte. Let Almonte start in LF for awhile with Gardner in center. That’s why you have depth. This guy is dying in AAA.

Pineda is going to be a question mark all year. Who didn’t know that. The problem is, one of the Yanks best starting pitching assets is stuck in the bullpen. The Yanks need to find someway to get Warren starting. That can’t happen until they add at least one more relief pitcher. I’m ok with Phelps getting Pineda’s starts for now but if he or Nuno fail, or if someone else goes down, Warren would be the perfect choice.

  23. Doreen April 29th, 2014 at 4:35 pm

Didn’t Robbie work with some kids leagues while he was a Yankee? I’m thinking that’s who he got the tickets for.

    Yeah, it’s good PR.

But he’s got a 9-year history with this city, and he still has fans, a lot of whom are kids who can’t otherwise afford games, and who probably would like to see him play.

It’s a nice thing to do.

yeah, it could be a real nuisance type of injury. Like a hamstring for a base runner.

    contrived, indeed.

you are a great, great yankees fan.

  26. Tyler April 29th, 2014 at 4:38 pm

Yeah a lat pull can be tough for a pitcher. Hopefully it doesn’t linger for too long.

I hope they cheer Cano his 1st at bat and then just go completely indifferent toward him the rest of the game.

  27. SweetSpot April 29th, 2014 at 4:39 pm

Glad it’s just a minor hand issue, hope Pineda is ok. Injuries never fails to rear it’s ugly head; happens to every team.

Not sure what the point of your list is. You chose random players from different teams who are on the DL. All these players are young and without an injury history except for Harper.

  38. tomingeorgia April 29th, 2014 at 5:05 pm

Injuries resulting from collisions with guys twice your size, or concrete walls (and that’s what happened), doesn’t make a player “injury prone”.

  39. Chip April 29th, 2014 at 5:06 pm

I think the doom and gloom brigade is out a little early on the Pineda thing.

He was sore, they’ll send him for an MRI to make sure there’s no reason other than general fatigue for him to be sore. If that’s the case they’ll probably have him skip the flight to LA and instead take the shorter flight to Milwaukee or just meet them back in NY for the Mets’ series.

  40. Jerkface April 29th, 2014 at 5:06 pm

. Injuries happen to every team and not just to older/injury prone players.

But we all know the rate at which injuries happen is different for some players than others, and carrying a group of players with a high rate of injury is risky.

  41. austinmac April 29th, 2014 at 5:07 pm

We need another starter. A lat issue can certainly be problematic for a good while for a pitcher. We now have Nuno and Phelps on a regular basis. That is less than ideal.

  42. Jerkface April 29th, 2014 at 5:09 pm

Injuries resulting from collisions with guys twice your size, or concrete walls (and that’s what happened), doesn’t make a player “injury prone”.

Its a matter of play style. If your play style is to run at max speed into walls and other people because you can’t be bothered to look around then its not really random.

Ellsbury is prone to getting injured. Even if he doesn’t have a chronic bad back or something, he has been hit by injury more than the average player. Some guys just have that black cloud over their head. Some guys bring that black cloud with them because of their play style.

Bryce Harper is most likely going to spend his entire career injured in some fashion because he plays much too hard. Ellsbury slides and dives in the outfield and steals bases, which means he is going to probably suffer some hand injuries and leg injuries before his contract is done.

  43. austinmac April 29th, 2014 at 5:12 pm

I haven’t seen Ellsbury take unnecessary risks. He dives for balls. Good, he is a baseball player.

  44. SweetSpot April 29th, 2014 at 5:18 pm

I’m not a doctor but I don’t think a lat has anything to do with previous elbow issues and Ellsbury is not injury prone unless you consider accidents; non-chronic injuries, to fit that definition which I don’t. Injuries are a crap shoot, you can’t predict them. Every team deals with injuries, some are very minor and some are major.

What star player wouldn’t you sign due to their “high injury rate”? Kemp? Tulo? Longoria? Hamilton?

  45. tomingeorgia April 29th, 2014 at 5:24 pm

My coaches always told me that if I can get it, go get it, whether that’s running out a roller or making a diving stab at a ground ball or flyball. Isn’t that what a baseball player is supposed to do? At least, it’s the style I like to watch.

  46. Hankflorida April 29th, 2014 at 5:25 pm

We were discussing yesterday about having either Warren or Betances start as they can challenge hitters and maybe go deep into games where Nuno and Phelps like CC are nibblers. Now, we get this news on Pineda, and we know that he has to be limited anyway in his pitch counts because of his surgery. I think that in may be in order to consider both Betances and Warren as starters now or the near future.

  47. Jerkface April 29th, 2014 at 5:26 pm

If your preference is for that style its fine. Harper and Ellsbury are good baseball players. But the injury risk comes with it.

  48. G. Love April 29th, 2014 at 5:31 pm

Yankees should hire Luis as pitching coach.

He sees things way before anyone else in this organization does.

  49. SweetSpot April 29th, 2014 at 5:34 pm

“I your preference is for that style its fine. Harper and Ellsbury are good baseball players. But the injury risk comes with it.”

    —————-

It’s not a “style,” it’s what almost all major league ballplayers do. How many times daily (if you watch highlights) do you see outfielders diving for balls, infielders laying out, etc. It’s called trying to be the best you can be, this is not discretionary and if you don’t have that attitude you will be replaced by someone who does.

  50. jlyanks85 April 29th, 2014 at 5:37 pm

Pineda probably was going to miss starts and be limited anyway with him not pitching the last couple years. So if he’s going to miss a couple weeks, better it be now when it’s early in the year and the rest of the division has been horrible then later in the season.

Plus Pineda doesn’t seem to like the cold too much using pine tar to grip his hands, so if he can get away from that and closer to warmer weather the better for him.

Hopefully the ellsbury hand issue isn’t a big deal, we need him in the lineup.

  51. Jerkface April 29th, 2014 at 5:37 pm

Baseball is more of a marathon than a sprint. Marathoners do not ‘try to be the best they can be’ by running at full speed for the entire marathon, nor should baseball players. And there is a huge difference between sliding or diving for balls normally and guys who really do go all out.

Health is a skill and a players ability to play in every game should be lauded.

  52. igotid88 April 29th, 2014 at 5:46 pm

Did Pineda stop throwing the second he felt something? Or did he throw a couple more to see if it was nothing?

  53. Hankflorida April 29th, 2014 at 5:48 pm

When the Yankees traded for Don Larsen, he had trouble with his control. He was sent to the bullpen where he started to pitch with a no wind-up. He earned his way back to the starting rotation and the rest is history as I watched his no hitter in the World Series in an army day room in El Paso, Texas. I say that both Warren and Betances have earned their stripes as pitchers who can challenge hitters, and going with CC, Nuno or Phelps will burn out the bullpen just like last year.

  54. yankinvegas April 29th, 2014 at 5:48 pm

I am sure that Pineda cannot be backdated on the DL because of the suspension which means his DL time, if needed, would be May 5 through May 19.
Assuming a DH tomorrow, I would hope that Phelps would be limited to 75 pitches so that he would be able to go on Monday on 3 days rest and then that would reset the rotation on proper rest.
It sounds as if Ellsbury is OK. The anticipated rainout tomorrow will help him. End this stupidity of 13 pitchers and call up Almonte for Leroux and then name Leroux as the 26th man for the DH. Then bring back Sizemore or Anna as soon as possible.

  55. pete2 April 29th, 2014 at 5:51 pm

Tightness in Pinedas lat may be a sign the labrum is acting up, since the pain can radiate from the labrum and be improperly diagnosed. He has lost velocity which is never a good sign. Fortunately the Yankees make liberal use of the MRI so maybe that sheds more light on the issue

Ellsbury did not look right against the Angels. I am hoping this is not the same issue that cropped up at the end of last year with the Red Sox as this would suggest it may be a chronic issue. I am reminded Crawford was rendered ineffective for much of 2011 with a wrist injury that had troubled him from time to time with the Rays, he ended up having surgery and was never the same hitter.

The reforms include interest rate deregulation, opening markets dominated by state-owned enterprises to competition, increasing the land supply, giving migrant workers more benefits of economic development, taxing carbon emission and deregulating energy prices, the OECD said. The new Chinese leadership faces challenges such as sustaining growth, reining in rising prices and narrowing income gaps. Wage growth among migrant workers in the Pearl River Delta region will accelerate to 9.2 percent this year from 7.6 percent in 2012, Standard Chartered Bank said in a report published yesterday. The British lender said the higher wages reflect better productivity, but they will eventually spill over into the prices of goods and broaden inflationary pressure.
