Game 43: Yankees vs. Pirates

Vidal NunoYANKEES (22-19)
Brett Gardner CF
Brian Roberts 2B
Mark Teixeira DH
Kelly Johnson 1B
Yangervis Solarte 3B
Zoilo Almonte LF
Ichiro Suzuki RF
John Ryan Murphy C
Brendan Ryan SS

LHP Vidal Nuno (1-1, 6.43)
Nuno has never faced any of the Pirates

PIRATES (17-24)
Josh Harrison 3B
Neil Walker 2B
Andrew McCutchen CF
Gaby Sanchez 1B
Starling Marte LF
Jordy Mercer SS
Jose Tabata RF
Tony Sanchez DH
Chris Stewart C

RHP Gerrit Cole (3-3, 3.76)
Cole has never faced any of the Yankees

TIME/TV: 4:35 p.m. (roughly), YES Network

UMPIRES: HP Marcus Pattillo, 1B John Tumpane, 2B Bob Davidson, 3B Paul Nauert

UPDATE, 4:55 p.m.: Ouch. Gardner starts the bottom of the first with a triple to right-center, but then gets picked off at third base by Chris Stewart. Not good. Blown opportunity, which lets the Pirates basically pitch around Teixeira before striking out Johnson. Scoreless after one.

UPDATE, 5:12 p.m.: Former Yankees prospect Jose Tabata is out of the game for the Pirates. He was either hurt running the bases or simply dogged it into third base, leading to an out. The Pirates have taken a 1-0 on lead on a couple of errors and a Chris Stewart single in the second inning.

UPDATE, 5:16 p.m.: It looks like a Media Game out there! The Yankees already have two errors, now Pirates right fielder Travis Snider has kicked a ball to give the Yankees a run.

UPDATE, 5:17 p.m.: Oh, and now Brendan Ryan lays down a nice bunt, Cole makes the dumb decision to try to make a highlight play and ends up throwing it away. Another run has scored, Ryan is at second, and this game is already a complete mess. Stadium is now playing (Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, which seems oddly appropriate.

UPDATE, 5:58 p.m.: Doubleheader today. It seems like the Pirates only showed up to play one.

UPDATE, 6:16 p.m.: Two-out, two-run home run by Marte here in the sixth inning. Looked like a routine fly ball off the bat, but it carried out to right field. It’s now a 3-2 Pirates lead. Pittsburgh has been a mess this game, and they’re in front.

UPDATE, 6:23 p.m.: Yangervis Solarte makes a catch in foul territory, nearly tips of the railing, and then ties the game with a solo homer. The dude just keeps hitting.

Hard to believe, but the Yanks have given up just 4 runs on this 4-game win streak. Then again, they gave up 21 against the Mets in the previous two.

  2. tomingeorgia May 18th, 2014 at 4:43 pm

Cold, rainy day, first time I’ve ever had the heat on in the middle of May. Perfect day for a TV doubleheader. Let’s go Nuno!

  3. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 4:44 pm

Looking like another 5 inning affair

  4. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 4:48 pm

Amazing that Gardner turned that into a triple.

he should have run home on contact on Roberts. no chance they could have thrown him out.

  13. pkyankfan69 May 18th, 2014 at 4:53 pm

Girardi knew Stewie was catching game 2 so he made sure to send out just about the worst line up possible so he can lower his catcher ERA… Joe and Stewie are going out for a man date at Applebees after the game.

For drinks Joe will be having the Skinnybee Blueberry ‘Rita. Stewie is having the White Peach Sangria… After drinks they’re ordering the 2 for $20 meal. First, they’re splitting some Mozzarella Sticks… For entrees, Joe will be having the Oriental Chicken Salad while Stewie is going with the Fiesta Lime Chicken. For desert they will be splitting the Apple Chimicheescake (1 plate, 2 spoons.)

  14. Captain Clutch May 18th, 2014 at 4:53 pm

Great job by Gardner. He really does some bone headed things on the field.

Our total daily attendance is the same as the Montreal Expo’s this year..

we can’t even sellout the stadium with the double header combined.

Sh-t, looks like another Keystone Cops game.

  19. Captain Clutch May 18th, 2014 at 4:57 pm

Solarte had plenty of time to throw to 1st base. No need to rush the throw.

  31. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 5:05 pm

Just gave them a run. 2 errors by the infield in the same inning, caused Nuno to need 5 outs.

  32. jlyanks85 May 18th, 2014 at 5:05 pm

With this lineup and nuno pirates should win this game with cole. Least we won series already.

  50. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 5:24 pm

Could have been more, but we lead, and Cole is at 49 pitches through 2.

  51. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 5:28 pm

Wow. Nuno looked like a cat fielding that bunt. Who knew?

  52. Captain Clutch May 18th, 2014 at 5:28 pm

I really don’t understand why Johnson isn’t the everyday 2nd basemen. Roberts defense is absolutely terrible and he doesn’t make so many plays that even a decent 2nd basemen should make.

  53. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 5:29 pm

Ton, FTR, I am not sure if Gore ever claimed he invented the internet, but what he did do was introduce the supercomputing act of 1990; the purpose of the act was to allow private industries to expand the existing internet to make it more available for every American. And FWIW, I believe the entire taxpayer cost of the supercomputing act was 11 billion dollars.

  54. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 5:30 pm

    Ton, I meant Tom

I like the human factor in baseball, but I am beginning to wish for a computerized strike zone, for balls and strikes as well as checked swings. If nothing else, it will quiet the complaints that the umpire is biased against “their” pitcher; because I am now starting to fall into that category, a category I equate with excuses for a losing team.

Let me guess because of the shift? To me these shifts are hurting more than helping.

  113. UnKnown May 18th, 2014 at 6:22 pm

Infield Defense costing this team runs left and right day in and day out.

    But it doesn’t matter.

  114. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 6:23 pm

    Monster HR from Solarte. Wow!

  118. bbb51 May 18th, 2014 at 6:24 pm

    Yan Solo!

  119. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:24 pm

jlyanks, you are right the Y’s were in the shift; in a previous comment I said Cano or any decent 2nd baseman would have caught that ball if they were playing a normal IF defense.

  120. NYY_Girl_Penny May 18th, 2014 at 6:24 pm

is Solarte the real deal ?

How lucky are the Yankees to sign him ???

  121. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:25 pm

I believe the following single was also the result of the shift.

  122. jlyanks85 May 18th, 2014 at 6:25 pm

jlyanks, you are right the Y’s were in the shift; in a previous comment I said Cano or any decent 2nd baseman would have caught that ball if they were playing a normal IF defense.

Which is why I actually think these shifts are hurting us more than helping. It’s ridiculous doing it for every guy in the lineup.

  123. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:27 pm

JLyanks, I have written extensively that extensive use of the shift requires more athletic, younger infielders for it to be successful; the primary reason it worked so well for Maddon.

  124. Captain Clutch May 18th, 2014 at 6:28 pm

Roberts costs them sooo many runs on defense. I would play Kelly Johnson everyday and see how he does. They can’t afford to have Roberts out there everyday and expect it to not hurt them.

Girardi is terrible at shifting … he doesn’t have the feel for it and he is trying to be Joe Madden.

  126. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 6:28 pm

Hold your breath everyone — Aceves is in.

  127. UnKnown May 18th, 2014 at 6:28 pm

If Solarte played for the Sox everyone here would be saying that he is on Roids. LOL

  128. NYY_Girl_Penny May 18th, 2014 at 6:28 pm

When Solarte hit that HR i nearly shift my pants!

  129. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:29 pm

I think the reason the Y’s are using it more this year is because of the loss of Cano; he was great at going to his right.

I don’t mind a shift once in a while on a particular player who always hits the ball to a certain spot of the field, but what they are doing now it’s just ridiculous. It’s even worse doing it with guys on base.

  134. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 6:32 pm

Aceves is garbage. Gives it right back.

  135. cs in la May 18th, 2014 at 6:32 pm

Does Aceves give up a homer every time he pitches? He’s the new Joba.

  136. NYY_Girl_Penny May 18th, 2014 at 6:33 pm

    palm meet face

  137. charlestonchew May 18th, 2014 at 6:33 pm

Aceves has been terrible since rejoining this team. Put J-Ram in there. He’s money.

  138. bbb51 May 18th, 2014 at 6:33 pm

    Damn you Aceves.

  139. charlestonchew May 18th, 2014 at 6:33 pm

Having said that, I bet you that Yangervis walks off in the 9th

  140. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:33 pm

JlYanks, once in a while is the key, such as on a strictly pull hitter; others here believe its the pitchers fault, because they are not pitching to the shift, which I find to be a ridiculous argument.

  141. UnKnown May 18th, 2014 at 6:34 pm

Really probably have to just cut ties with Ace. He obviously isn’t the guy we had the first time around.

  142. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:34 pm

NYY Penny, exactly, and no one was better at throwing across their body than Cano

  143. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 6:35 pm

Man, Girardi must see something in Aceves that no one else does.

  144. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:36 pm

Another shift, and although the out was made, the 2nd baseman also easily makes that play; but since it was the SS, the Y’s will credit the out to their use of the shift.

  145. Captain Clutch May 18th, 2014 at 6:36 pm

I love how girardi treats Aceves like he is one of his good backend relievers. That homerun was so predictable. I would bring in the other kids before I would pitch him in a close game.

  146. say NO to Cano May 18th, 2014 at 6:37 pm

  147. UnKnown May 18th, 2014 at 6:38 pm

  148. willwill May 18th, 2014 at 6:39 pm

WTF is aceves still in the majors. He keeps giving up games and homers. morons

  149. jlyanks85 May 18th, 2014 at 6:39 pm

Seems like every time Aceves comes in, he gives up a homer.

  150. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:39 pm

I “knew” we would see Aceves in tonight’s game; made the prediction during the 1st game.

  151. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:43 pm

Hard to believe, but Nuno’s outing was the best for a Y’s SP, since Tanaka last pitched.

  152. tomingeorgia May 18th, 2014 at 6:44 pm

    Nuno was fine.

  153. Petefromnoha May 18th, 2014 at 6:44 pm

  154. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 6:49 pm

  155. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 6:51 pm

  158. I am Brett Godner May 18th, 2014 at 6:52 pm

Should have let Garner keep running. Dude was moving would have taken a perfect play to get him.

  159. moctezuma May 18th, 2014 at 6:56 pm

How do you stop Gardner? What kind of thinking is that? How many more chances are they going to get and that would have been nearly impossible to nab him at the plate, he was flying!

  160. NYYenigma May 18th, 2014 at 6:56 pm

Agreed. Would have been a close play, but with 2 outs, force them to make a perfect throw to get the out.

  161. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 6:58 pm

I believe the Y’s have not won a single game if they trailed after 7; maybe today they can change that.

  162. moctezuma May 18th, 2014 at 6:59 pm

Yes, force them to make a perfect play. I mean, their defense has been far from perfect.

  163. NYY_Girl_Penny May 18th, 2014 at 7:04 pm

mismanaged is an understatement.. it’s also heartless with out owners who attend 2 games a season.. they don’t understand the game or like it.. it was daddy’s passion, their cash cow they’re running into the ground.. believe it.

  180. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 7:15 pm

That wasn’t Almonte — it was Soriano. And he needs to put up a better effort against a lefty. This sucks.

  181. say NO to Cano May 18th, 2014 at 7:15 pm

  183. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 7:18 pm

Thornton may be worse than Aceves. Girardi raising the white flag on this game.

  184. Petefromnoha May 18th, 2014 at 7:19 pm

Didnt even pinch hit Ells or Mccann for Ichiro in the 8th. The bottom of the 9th may irrelevant now.

Too much trash on this $200m roster.

  187. Tar May 18th, 2014 at 7:21 pm

  189. JimK May 18th, 2014 at 7:24 pm

Tar, I agree, how many times are they scanning the crowd, while the batter has put the ball in play.

  190. say NO to Cano May 18th, 2014 at 7:25 pm

  191. Tar May 18th, 2014 at 7:25 pm

“Tar, I agree, how many times are they scanning the crowd, while the batter has put the ball in play.”

Maybe for some other teams that stuff would be ok… But I feel like we deserve better than that. SO many little things they could do better.

  192. ScottinSJ May 18th, 2014 at 7:27 pm

Guess they didn’t want to lose by one run again.

  193. say NO to Cano May 18th, 2014 at 7:27 pm

  194. say NO to Cano May 18th, 2014 at 7:28 pm

IMO, Murphy could have blocked the plate to catch Soriano’s throw.

  196. moctezuma May 18th, 2014 at 7:29 pm
