TIME/TV: 10:05 p.m., YES Network

WEATHER: Temperatures in the high 60s. Been a lovely day here in the bay area.

UMPIRES: C.B. Bucknor, 1B Hal Gibson, 2B Dale Scott, 3B Dan Iassogna

MARKED TERRITORY: Mark Teixeira has hit more home runs against the A’s than he has against any other opponent. His 36 home runs against Oakland ranks second among all active players (Alex Rodriguez has 43). Teixeira has hit more home runs at O.co Coliseum (20) than he has at any other ballpark as a visiting player, and among active players who have never played with the A’s, Teixeira’s 20 homers at the venue ranks second behind only Rodriguez (21).

PUT HIM IN COACH: Jacoby Ellsbury had the game-winning RBI in the Yankees’ last three games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first Yankees player with the game-winning RBI in three straight team games since Nick Swisher from August 13-15, 2012.

REVERSAL OF FORTUNE: It’s all said and done now, but this season the Yankees lost their three home games against Seattle and their two home games against the Mets, but the Yankees won their three road games at Safeco Field and two at Citi Field. According to the Yankees game notes, this marks the only two instances in Yankees franchise history that the team lost all of its home games and won all its road games against the same opponent in a single season.

UPDATE, 10:17 p.m.: Two runs on three hits in the first inning against Sonny Gray? Maybe this offense really has gotten on track a little bit.

UPDATE, 10:37 p.m.: Gardner’s second hit of the game is an RBI single for a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. The Yankees have five hits, all singles. Here’s Jeter.

UPDATE, 10:41 p.m.: This is Jeter’s fourth straight multi-hit game. Batting average is up to .278.

UPDATE, 11:31 p.m.: Phelps is coming out for the fifth inning and he’s currently working on a no-hitter. He walked a guy in the fourth, but otherwise he’s been terrific.

UPDATE, 11:40 p.m.: A’s first hit is a little bloop over Johnson’s head at third base. Runners at first and second now — there was also a walk — with Andy Parrino at the plate (Parrino wound up playing in place of Punto).

UPDATE, 11:44 p.m.: Nice running catch by Ellsbury helps Phelps get out of the fifth without any damage. It’s still a 3-0 Yankees lead heading into the sixth.

UPDATE, 12:09 a.m.: Phelps has walked three guys, but he’s allowed just one hit and he’s kept a dangerous A’s lineup off the scoreboard through six innings. Awfully good start for him, and a good bounce back as well.

UPDATE, 12:39 a.m.: My goodness, the Yankees have even remembered how to tack on late-inning runs! It’s now 6-0 as the Yankees have scored three runs on four hits here in the eighth. Got some help from an error, too.

UPDATE, 12:42 a.m.: Make that 7-0 on an RBI single by Johnson.

I gave Phelps his marching order in the last blog, and a good soldier, I hope he follows through.
Phelps has to keep this game close hoping that the ump has a wide strike zone. He has to forget about the pitch count and not give in. The pen is rested and five scoreless will be good enough tonight. In this spacious ballpark, I can see our three banjo hitters playing the outfield and try to manufacture runs.

  2. pete22 June 13th, 2014 at 10:08 pm

Reveres lock written all over this game. Hope so anyways

  3. blake June 13th, 2014 at 10:08 pm

I would have probably rested Jeter tonight…..bad matchup for him and if the yanks have any shot of winnig this game it’s gonna have to be low scoring and phelps needs all the defensive help he can get.

  4. blake June 13th, 2014 at 10:08 pm

    Oh good….CB Buckner

  5. Tar June 13th, 2014 at 10:08 pm

Jacoby keeping his eye on the 3rd baseman

  14. SweetSpot June 13th, 2014 at 10:11 pm

What a shame they didn’t drop Jeter in the order.

WCYF stop trying to cause trouble…or go away

  26. pete22 June 13th, 2014 at 10:12 pm

Pretty dumb play to try to get Gardner. Cespedes has a gun, but there was no chance

  27. bbb51 June 13th, 2014 at 10:13 pm

    Pound em’!

  28. Mordot11 June 13th, 2014 at 10:13 pm

That’s a pretty good start. Can the Yankees make it 3-0 now? Two outs will do it.

  29. SweetSpot June 13th, 2014 at 10:14 pm

  30. J. Alfred Prufrock June 13th, 2014 at 10:14 pm

  39. yankeefeminista June 13th, 2014 at 10:17 pm

blake, Teixy’s looking good. Just needs to stay healthy and keep it up.

  40. pete22 June 13th, 2014 at 10:18 pm

Not to beat a dead horse, but getting production out of the 2nd spot is huge, especially with the middle of the order struggling

  41. SweetSpot June 13th, 2014 at 10:18 pm

    Excellent top of the lineup.

  42. chicken_stanley June 13th, 2014 at 10:19 pm

Good top of the inning… now, c’mon Phelps! No nibbling – be aggressive

  47. Tabbert June 13th, 2014 at 10:20 pm

Great start to the game. Man, after watching the first four guys come up and have great At bats, it was pretty sad seeing Mccann and Beltran look so lost out there at the plate. Feeble efforts by both of them. Need to get those guys going!

  48. blake June 13th, 2014 at 10:20 pm

Lets hope phelps can hold them down

  95. blake June 13th, 2014 at 10:50 pm

just lol . even tho thats true about always 1st pitch swinging his slow bat this year a blind man can see! his instant 0-2 ; he also used to have confidence at the plate and put together good AB’s, something hes been lacking for years.. and this year its been more obvious due to his god awful stats. btw, his 1st pitch swinging has also virtuall led the league in weak ground balls and gidp.

caddyshack version of the Dalai Lama, according to Carl Spackler:

The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

  249. Shame Spencer June 14th, 2014 at 1:03 am

Especially on a night like tonight when everyone is clicking..

This team has always had the potential to be one of two things: really consistent and therefore a pretty good ball club or very streaky, creating a bad one.

Nights like tonight – when everyone contributes to move the line – are exactly what the good version of this team looks like.

The question is how can we get everyone to stay locked in? If this team starts clicking on all cylinders it can really be quite good. But I find myself waiting for the next injury or slump.

  250. JimK June 14th, 2014 at 1:06 am

Beltran may not have had a hit in his last 2 AB’s but he hit the ball well on both occasions.

  251. RYUKINGDOM June 14th, 2014 at 1:06 am

McCann’s batting stance has him resting way behind him. That’s why he swings down on the ball because his weight is going the opposite direction. He needs to keep bat up and straight away.

Think about it….Phelps going into the lion’s cage against one of the best pitchers on the A’s….that’s why we love this game.

  272. RYUKINGDOM June 14th, 2014 at 1:17 am
