Quick notes: Pineda, Cervelli, Sabathia, Bell

Derek Jeter is back in the city where he made The Flip — and if you hadn’t heard, he’s retiring at the end of this season — so there’s going to be a lot of pregame stuff going on. I have to run back down to the field shortly, but I wanted to get a few real notes posted real quickly. I’ll come back with some more stuff later.

CervelliPineda• Joe Girardi made it official that Francisco Cervelli will not join the team until next week. With the Yankees planning to start Brian McCann all three games here in Oakland, the Yankees didn’t think it made sense to activate Cervelli and have him sit on the bench. Might as well let him get three more days of at-bats in Trenton.

• This was becoming pretty obvious, and Girardi acknowledged it today: Michael Pineda won’t be back until August. He seemed on the verge of returning from that sore upper-back muscle near his right shoulder, but when he experienced a setback, he essentially went back to square one. And because 10 days of rest apparently wasn’t enough last time, he’s going to rest more than 10 days this time. He’s still not even playing catch.

• CC Sabathia is throwing. He hasn’t thrown a bullpen, but the Yankees think he could throw one next week. After bullpens is when the Yankees will have a better idea of when he’ll come off the disabled list, but Girardi said it “would be tough” for Sabathia to be back before the break.

• The Yankees made a minor move today, signing reliever Heath Bell to a minor league contract and assigning him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To make room for him in that Scranton bullpen, Mark Montgomery was demoted to Double-A Trenton. Bell was previously with the Orioles and Rays this season. Despite pretty solid numbers, Montgomery’s prospect status has faded since he got into the upper-levels of the system.

What is the deal with Montgomery

  2. chicken_stanley June 13th, 2014 at 7:54 pm

Thanks for the update, Chad. I may be in the minority, but I’ll be a bit surprised if CC pitches again this year

  3. MTU June 13th, 2014 at 7:56 pm

    Glenn-

    You’d lose that bet.

    Don’t make it.

    Continue house hunting.

    Mike – :)

  7. MTU June 13th, 2014 at 8:06 pm

    Glenn-

Bet the values are pretty friggin’ good around there.

    What’s the terrain like ?

    Flat ?

  8. I Am Winning June 13th, 2014 at 8:07 pm

I think CC has a better chance than Pineda at pitching this year. Pineda is turning into another Carl Pavano story. Montero and Pineda have been useless for both clubs, which is a shame because Pineda has potential to be a top of the rotation guy.

  9. chicken_stanley June 13th, 2014 at 8:09 pm

Pretty flat landscape which is quite a change for me… you can tell you’re getting close to the beach – the soil is sandy. Pine seems to be the dominant species of tree… that said, sort of picturesque in its own way

  10. MTU June 13th, 2014 at 8:09 pm

It was always gonna be easier for Pineda to get healthy than to stay healthy.

    Nature of labrum injuries.

Mick – my favorite part is the dance at the end

  12. Pat M. June 13th, 2014 at 8:10 pm

Time to hop on the BART ( SF Subway ) and zip under the Bay to Oakland. And I mean zip as the hits about 80 while under the SF Bay. I’ve made this trip many times and yet I can’t wait until I see sunlight at the end of the tunnel…… Go Yanks !!!!! Bummer about Pineda, it’s going to be tough getting those 8 wins for the dough

  13. MTU June 13th, 2014 at 8:11 pm

    Time to watch “Her”.

    Catch you later.

    ;)

  24. chicken_stanley June 13th, 2014 at 8:19 pm

Sweetspot – the only thing I know about medicine is that it tastes bad :) …. My feeling about CC not pitching this year is just that – a feeling

  25. yankeefeminista June 13th, 2014 at 8:20 pm

Unknown, not sure as I haven’t attended any SWB games yet this year. But walk rates don’t look so hot. And I’d guess velo’s likely still down on fastball. He was a beast in Trenton in 2012 before it dipped from 92-94 to 88-90. I will check him out in Trenton on the weekend if he remains there.

  30. pete22 June 13th, 2014 at 8:22 pm

    mick June 13th, 2014 at 8:15 pm

    Pete-
    Thanks for that.
Just trying to see the effect of Beltran and Tex in the lineup together.
    ==========================

There were really only 3 stretches. To open the season for 4 games, but Tex may not have been 100%. Then Tex went out with the hamstring. When Tex came back they had 13-14 games together before Beltran went on the DL, but those were after Beltran ran over the wall in Tampa and Beltran did not seem 100%. Now 6 games back together, but not sure either is fully health

I don’t think we have seen either together when both were 100%, and am not sure we will all season. One can only hope.

  31. SweetSpot June 13th, 2014 at 8:23 pm

Next time do your research! :)

  32. mick June 13th, 2014 at 8:23 pm

check in with us during the game Pat M.

  33. SweetSpot June 13th, 2014 at 8:24 pm

I have to believe based on past performance that at some point soon Soriano is going to get on one of his rolls for two weeks. (hoping) :)

  34. mick June 13th, 2014 at 8:25 pm

have to watch some hockey. not a fan but it kills time. hate late games.

  35. mick June 13th, 2014 at 8:26 pm

here’s hoping we don’t need pineda till august, if then.

pete- this team has to be better with tex and beltran in it.

    let’s pray for their health..

  36. UnKnown June 13th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

    Thanks YF

  37. mick June 13th, 2014 at 8:40 pm

Man. This hockey is some game. So fast, violent. No lack of hustle here..

  38. tomingeorgia June 13th, 2014 at 8:42 pm

    mick,
I can handle one 10 o’clock game per coast road trip. Five in a row is impossible. Every other ALE team seems to have gotten one weekday afternoon game this summer, not the NYY.

  39. Jerkface June 13th, 2014 at 9:15 pm

Pineda being out till August is anything but good. Maybe if he only missed a month, but at this rate he isnt going to have any innings at all. Its getting harder and harder to count on him for a rotation spot. He won’t have passed 50 innings in any of the previous 3 seasons at this rate!

  40. MTU June 13th, 2014 at 9:18 pm

    JF-

That’s how it can be w Labrum injuries.

  41. tomingeorgia June 13th, 2014 at 9:18 pm

    Was that snow in Toronto?

  42. bigdan22 June 13th, 2014 at 9:21 pm

Yet another home run for Zoilo. OPS against righties now 1.028. Only one hit for Dugas, but a triple. OPS for the year .883 now.

Time to get my plan in effect.

  43. bigdan22 June 13th, 2014 at 9:27 pm

The problem was they didn’t give this injury enough time to heal the first time. Let’s hope this time they get it right.

If Pineda does come back in August, have to wonder if he can go the a winter league to build up innings for the year. Maybe Instructional League?

But this def places doubt as to how much he can be relied on next year even if he is healthy. I guess our replacement starters are going to get a longer audition than intended. I hope they and Tanaka/Kuroda can stay healthy.

  44. pete22 June 13th, 2014 at 9:28 pm

Since May 1 the Yankees have had 3 day games during the week.

    Blue Jays = 3
    Bal-2
    Bos -3*
    TBR -4*

    * exclude day games on weekdays due to DH

  45. Jerkface June 13th, 2014 at 9:39 pm

It would be nice to get Pineda into winterball but he has never played there. Honestly I think the Yankees just shut him down.

This revolution, the knowledge revoultion, can be a revolution of free vitality as well, but of a different type: free intellectual vitality. It really is very crude today, yet our Macintosh computer takes less power than a 100-watt bulb to run it and it can save you hours a day. What will it be able to do ten or 20 many years from now, or 50 many years from now?
