The Yankees offense pounced on one of the better starting pitchers in the American League, and they even tacked on insurance runs during the late innings. Add in an excellent bounce-back start by David Phelps, and the Yankees got their fourth straight win, this one 7-0 against league-leading Athletics. Snapping a string of four straight losses, Phelps allowed just two hits through 6.2 innings and won for just the second time this season. He walked three — easily his biggest problem of the night — but he made it work for his best and second-longest start of the season. To keep the winning streak alive, the Yankees had to beat Sonny Gray, who came into the game with a 2.83 ERA but allowed three runs in the first two innings. The first three Yankees batters singled in the first inning, then four in a row reached base in the second. Derek Jeter had his fourth straight multi-hit game, Brett Gardner reached base three times, and Jacoby Ellsbury pushed his hitting streak to 17 games. Four runs in the eighth put the game well out of reach. Carlos Beltran was the only Yankees starter without a hit.
