Weather: Clear, 85 degrees

TV/Radio in NY area: MY 9/WFAN 660 AM, 101.9 FM

Tanaka time: Masahiro Tanaka is tied for the major-league lead in wins with 10 and leads in ERA and is third in the majors at 2.02. All 13 of his starts have been quality starts, the longest streak right now in the majors.

Milestone waiting: The next win by the Yankees will be Joe Girardi’s 600th as their manager.

Who says I’m old? Nine days from his 40th birthday, Derek Jeter is batting .435 (10 for 23) and has a .462 on-base percentage over his last six games. He enters at .271 overall.

Update, 7:13: Reyes homers to right on Tanaka’s first pitch. Jays lead the majors in homers, now 93. Reyes’ 20th career leadoff homer.

Update, 7:33: Yankees go down 1-2-3 against Stroman in the first.

Update, 7:43: Tanaka has four Ks after his first two innings.

Update, 7:49: Yankees no hits in the first two innings, just a Beltran walk in the second.

Update, 8:03: Tanaka hasn’t been exceptionally sharp, six baserunners in three innings. But he has allowed just the one run. Got out of a first-and-second, one-out problem in the third. He has five strikeouts.

Update, 8:13: Gardner two-run HR, 2-1 Yankees in the third. No. 6 for Gardner. Career high was 8 last year.

Update, 8:33: Seven baserunners and seven Ks through four for Jays vs. Tanaka. He is impressive in general and especially with men on base.

Update, 8:40: Lefty Aaron Loup warming for the Jays after a leadoff walk to Beltran in the fourth.

Update, 8:47: First and second for the Yankees with two outs, and John Gibbons pulls Stroman for lefty Aaron Loup with Gardner due up. Still 2-1 Yankees.

Update, 8:51: Gardner grounds out.

Update, 9:01: Tanaka 10 Ks and he has only pitched five innings. Struck out the side in the fifth. Fifth double-digit strikeout game in 14 starts. High of 11 Ks (so far).

Update, 9:12: Teixeira RBI single, 3-1.

Update, 9:17: On to the sixth. Today is the anniversary of Ron Guidry’s club-record 18-strikeout game against the Angels.

Update, 9:26: Blue Jays don’t strike out in the sixth, first no-K inning for Tanaka. He’s at 104 pitches. Todd Redmond on to pitch for the Jays. Betances warming up.

Update, 9:37: Tanaka out, Betances on for the seventh. Tanaka allowed one run, five hits and two walks and he hit one. Plus he fanned 10. If the Yankees hang on, he will become the sole MLB wins leader with 11.

Update, 9:40: Betances has a 1-2-3 seventh.

Update, 9:57: Two hitless innings for Betances with three Ks. So the Blue Jays have struck out 13 times so far. Sergio Santos on to pitch the eighth for them.

Update, 10:19: Yankees win 3-1.

    Go Tanaka-san! Go Yanks!

  2. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 7:09 pm

Hard to call a game in June a must win, but this comes pretty close. With Tanaka on the mound, the Yankees badly need to get off on the right foot versus the AL East.

    Should be a good one.

  3. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 7:09 pm

Nice video tribute to Tony Gwynn.

  4. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 7:12 pm

    Well that wasn’t too good.

  5. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 7:30 pm

    Robbed! Go Jeet!

  6. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 7:31 pm

Quiet crowd on LoHud, I see. Jeter swinging at the first pitch again.

  7. pete22 June 17th, 2014 at 7:33 pm

Stroman looks better than his ERA

  8. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 7:33 pm

The offense looks exactly the same.

  9. Missing Cano June 17th, 2014 at 7:34 pm

meh par for the course for this offense and that was the better part of the offense ab in that inning

  10. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 7:35 pm

    Stroman’s throwing strikes

  11. luis June 17th, 2014 at 7:36 pm

    Good evening guys,

    Go Yankees!!

  12. ohengin33r June 17th, 2014 at 7:36 pm

Here we go again with the offense..ugh. Hopefully they come around.

Man the Royals are putting up a ton of runs again. Gee wonder if it had anything to do with getting rid of the hitting coach….hmmm

Samardzija is in talks with the cubs about an extension. Suits me. We are not getting him, and I’d rather someone like the Jays didn’t.

Agreed….we can’t get him so id rather him just stay in Chicago

    —————-

You guys have lost your Team Greedy spirit.. we should be talking about how much we’d pay guys like JS in a year and a half!

Man the Royals are putting up a ton of runs again. Gee wonder if it had anything to do with getting rid of the hitting coach….hmmm

And the Royals have excellent pitching. Davis and Holland are unreal out of the bullpen. But I agree, the Yankees have stuck way too long with Long.

    Shame,

They should try hitting some beyond the short porch.

  23. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 7:47 pm

We’re sadly stuck with a 5-year McCann experience.

  24. Missing Cano June 17th, 2014 at 7:47 pm

    McCann fail again

  27. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 7:47 pm

This is Stroman’s 4th start and his 3 previous starts were all QS; he allowed 5 runs in 18 IP.

  28. Missing Cano June 17th, 2014 at 7:49 pm

    This is

this is YS where the Yanks used to be able to hit regardless of the pitcher

    Scherzer losing 7-0.

Don’t think I want Yankees spending too much money on him. He’s been inconsistent. Unless the can use the inconsistency to get a reasonable deal.

  32. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 7:50 pm

The home field disadvantage is pronounced against a good hitting team like TOR.

  33. Shame Spencer June 17th, 2014 at 7:50 pm

This thing with McCann… I dunno. I was preaching patience but dang…I hope he tears it up in the second half so I dont have to spend all winter praying for a bounce back season.

  36. Missing Cano June 17th, 2014 at 7:52 pm

yes yes GO on a three pitch ab grind away at least Beltran had a productive ab i thought McCann kind of did with a five pitch ab but then his weak grounder deflated that Teixeira possibly has the best hit ball of the game McCann needs to starting earning the 9.5 million extra he is paid for (7.5 million for framing and calling a good game)

  37. luis June 17th, 2014 at 7:53 pm

Good piece of hitting from Melky there

  38. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 7:53 pm

What a difference in hitting ability between these 2 teams.

Not to add salt to the wound..But calling a good game and framing pitches is basically a BUC…Which means 2-3 mil at most…So he better start earning those extra 12 mil we are paying him..In all honesty, I think he will eventually hit

Anyone know why Solarte isn’t playing today?

  44. luis June 17th, 2014 at 7:58 pm

    Phew!!..I thought that was gone

  45. Missing Cano June 17th, 2014 at 7:59 pm

because joe girardi finally looked at the back of his baseball card and realized Solarte does not have any mlb seasons on it

  47. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:00 pm

Day off to clear his mind I guess… Also they might want to see what Johnson can do with the short porch…But if you ask me, I would play Solarte and Johnson

  48. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:01 pm

    Good FB there

  49. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:02 pm

    Nice split!!! atta boy Tank

  50. ohengin33r June 17th, 2014 at 8:04 pm

I agree with playing Solarte and Johnson. Put Kelly at his natural position 2b.

I don’t know why they would sit him for a small slump while McCann gets constant at bats…oh wait nevermind one is making $1 per game and the other $100,000…answered my own question

  51. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:05 pm

And now Roberts is going to shut all of our mouths

  52. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:07 pm

  53. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:09 pm

  66. ohengin33r June 17th, 2014 at 8:14 pm

Now Tanaka will bear down. He’s got the lead and will do everything he can to keep them in the game.

Hopefully they can break it open here though

Tanaka looks disgusted with every pitch he misses. His body language gives it away

  81. chicken_stanley June 17th, 2014 at 8:25 pm

McCann is tying himself up tonight on anything middle in… can’t tell exactly what he’s doing but his swing is totally screwed right now. His top half looks like its trying to pull and the bottom half looks like “go up the middle”… his swing is a mess

  82. ohengin33r June 17th, 2014 at 8:28 pm

Don’t worry Kevin Long will get McCann’s swing straightened out

  83. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

Just crazy how many people are having the surgery over the past couple of years. Don’t ever remember hearing about so many TJS in such a short span.

For a long time I don’t remember hearing TJS then all of a sudden…blam 3-4 people a year having the surgery it seems like

  97. pete22 June 17th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

  100. pete22 June 17th, 2014 at 8:42 pm

TJS has been pretty common for the past decade. The recent rash of TJS seems unprecedented. I suspect HGH testing the past 2 years has something to do with it. HGH was great for repairing the micro-tears that develop during each start.

  105. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:45 pm

Cano and Montero homer and the M’s win. Wait! What?

  111. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 8:47 pm

    K. Long is one of the best and most respected hitting coaches in baseball. Clearly, many of you don’t understand what a hitting coach does and doesn’t do. What he does do is live his job 24/7 and he routinely is the first to be at the ballpark working with hitters, etc. They can’t take the at-bat for the hitter. Sometimes they find something in a swing, like he did with Ellsbury about three weeks ago. Often though, there’s nothing to see or fix, hitters just go into slumps or there is something physical or mental at play.

  112. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 8:48 pm

If Gardner hits another HR or an extra BH, he may find himself batting 3rd.

    Joe had a good idea.

  124. luis June 17th, 2014 at 8:56 pm

  126. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 8:58 pm

    10 K’s

  131. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:00 pm

3 up, 3 down…10 k’s in all…A pitty that he won’t be able to go the distance…83 pitches I think

  132. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 9:00 pm

Ten K’s in five! He’s so good.

  133. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:01 pm

The Great Melky, Joey Bats and Encarnacion join the K Club.

  134. pete22 June 17th, 2014 at 9:01 pm

Tanaka threw 15 pitches that inning, not a single fastball, all splits and sliders

  135. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 9:01 pm

Sure would be nice to get above the dreaded 2 run plateau.

  136. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 9:02 pm

Let that be a lesson to all leadoff hitters when facing Tanaka. Don’t go deep starting the game it just pisses him off and this is what happens. :)

  137. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 9:02 pm

    =================

Let me elaborate… Clemens pitch was learned later in his career I believe…The break on Tanaka’s is like a foot or more in the last few feets…I don’t think Clemens’s had that much late break

  141. pete22 June 17th, 2014 at 9:03 pm

I wonder if teams can get batting practice against a split. I guess you need a pitcher who can throw a good one for enough pitches, and those are few and far between

  142. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:04 pm

Clemens had less finesse than Tanaks, he just overpowered hitters with brute force.

  143. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:05 pm

They are usually in an MLB roster..

  144. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:06 pm

Isn’t the split the old fashioned sinker or the shuuto. Or was it once called the forkball.

  145. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:06 pm

Nice!!! Good at bat as well

  146. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 9:06 pm

    Way to hustle, Jeet!

  147. ohengin33r June 17th, 2014 at 9:06 pm

Long counts for allot of the hitters tonight… Good to see for a change

  148. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:07 pm

It was called the forkball..But the split has more break and a different grip

  149. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:09 pm

There was a pitcher named Roy Face on the Pirates who popularized the fork ball but he was not known as overpowering.

Strictly a RP who went 18-1 one year.

  150. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:10 pm

Good at bat after goo at bat

I might add that I could be wrong about the split being the old forkball…They have similar action but different grips as far as I know

  151. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 9:11 pm

Mick, Lindy McDaniel threw a fork ball, but if I recall it was not a swing and miss pitch; he usually got the hitter to ground out.

  152. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 9:11 pm

Terrific execution this inning. If I were Loup, I would have walked Tex.

  153. jmills June 17th, 2014 at 9:11 pm

Didn’t Roy Face relieve as well? I’m working or would be on for this thing.

  154. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:12 pm

This is the formula. 6 or 7 inning game.

  155. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:12 pm

    Tex!! Good swing, better approach

  156. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 9:13 pm

  157. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 9:13 pm

    Please, let him be HBP!!

  158. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 9:13 pm

Loup not long for this game either with this pitch count.

  159. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:15 pm

    Will Cervelli start tmw?

  160. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:15 pm

    Jimk,

The grip of the forkball used three fingers on the seems..That’s why it was called the way it was called, because the grip resembled a fork…The splitter uses just two fingers on a very wide grip on the seems…Although the action is similar, the splitter has more late break, therefore is much more effective

  161. ohengin33r June 17th, 2014 at 9:15 pm

Holy @#$$ McCann at least make an attempt. God almighty

  162. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 9:16 pm

    I think we’re on a nearly 4-hour pace.

  163. Unnamed June 17th, 2014 at 9:16 pm

It was so nice with Lorenz instead of Kay.

  164. ohengin33r June 17th, 2014 at 9:17 pm

Wow…just sounded like my Grandmother there. Sorry

  165. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 9:20 pm

Both the forkball and splitter are thrown with the two fingers spread wide apart. The only difference is that the forkball is gripped deeper in the hand and is a slower pitch; more like a change-up or slow curve in speed but with a downward break.

  166. pete22 June 17th, 2014 at 9:23 pm

Tanaka could care less about ROY. He going after Cy Young and MVP

  167. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:23 pm

    SS,

I could be wrong..Never threw one..But I believe it used 3 fingers…At least the pitchers I saw throwing it did

  168. chicken_stanley June 17th, 2014 at 9:23 pm

McCann is a mess right now… he’s tying himself up on pitches he doesn’t even swing at. I may be wrong, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Cervy gets a couple of starts in a row

  169. pete22 June 17th, 2014 at 9:23 pm

Tanaka would make a good goal tender

  170. blake June 17th, 2014 at 9:23 pm

I haven’t seen a pitcher field like Tanaka since Maddux…..dude is like a cat

  171. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:24 pm

    Tanaka the Cat!

  172. blake June 17th, 2014 at 9:24 pm

  173. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:25 pm

Or maybe we are lost in translation…Bola de tenedor= Forkball

  174. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:25 pm

    One more inning for Tanaks?

  175. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:26 pm

The guy is a bulldog…His makeup is off the charts

  176. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 9:26 pm

Tanaka at 103 pitches. I think I might bring him out to start the 7th.

  177. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 9:26 pm

I guess its Betances time, followed by Warren, and DRob, that is unless the Y’s have big inning.

  178. mick June 17th, 2014 at 9:27 pm

batter to batter in the 7th.

  179. ohengin33r June 17th, 2014 at 9:27 pm

What an inspiration for this team Tanaka is. The rest of the guys really need to feed off of him and carry it forward for a couple of days. He wants to win and gives it his all…absolutely amazing.

  180. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 9:28 pm

History and details on forkball and splitter. Excellent.

    http://www.baseballprospectus......leid=12558

  181. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:28 pm

I’ll go a little further…I saw pitchers throw the forkball at 87-89 MPH..Hardly a CU

  182. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 9:29 pm

Luis, SS definition of a forkball was the same one I found when I looked it up; the forkball was gripped deeper between the fingers and the pitcher would also snap his wrist in a downward motion when he released the pitch.

  183. pkyankfan69 June 17th, 2014 at 9:30 pm

I’ve heard Kay say that Matsui lost the ROY award a few times because writers didn’t want to vote for him because he was a veteran in Japan instead… Obviously Matsui turned out to be a much better player than Berroa but their #’s were pretty similar that year and Berroa did it as a SS.

    2003 Matsui – .287/.353/.435/.788 - 16 HR – 103 RBI
    2003 Berroa – .287/.338/.451/.789 - 17 HR – 73 RBI

  184. blake June 17th, 2014 at 9:31 pm

He’s so impressive…..I mean he comes out and can’t control much…..and just finds it mid game.

Tank reallh didn’t pitch well….and he goes 6 and allows 1 run and Ks 10

  185. luis June 17th, 2014 at 9:33 pm

    Jimk and SS

First..Good read…Perhaps what we call “bola de tenedor” is not the same pitch as the forkball..But Urbano Lugo jr threw it back in the early 80′s at the speeds I was talking about and used a three finger grip..But then again, I could be wrong

  186. blake June 17th, 2014 at 9:34 pm

So now decision time….I let Tanaka start the 7th at 103 pitches and have Betances ready. Hopefully Tank get be efficient and get though 7 then go Betances/ DRob the rest

  187. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 9:35 pm

    Dellin sighting

  188. blake June 17th, 2014 at 9:35 pm

Looks like Girardi is going by the cookbook though…..Betances then Warren then DRob.

Remember…..the more relievers that pitch…..the more chances one will suck that day

  189. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 9:35 pm

    Go Dell!

  190. J. Alfred Prufrock June 17th, 2014 at 9:36 pm

I bet Tanaka is a big Lincoln Park fan

  193. blake June 17th, 2014 at 9:40 pm

That pitch is just wicked….if you do happen to hit that pitch you can’t keep it fair…..and it’s super hard to cover that and 98…..hard to lay off that when you’re geared up for 98

  194. pkyankfan69 June 17th, 2014 at 9:40 pm

    8 pitches… Give Dellin the 8th also

  195. blake June 17th, 2014 at 9:41 pm

  196. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 9:41 pm

  201. Patrick June 17th, 2014 at 9:42 pm

I feel like this game the Yankees should have like 6 or 7 runs. We knocked the starter out in the 4th inning and still only 3 runs? The blue jays bullpen really isn’t very good

Betances has to be one of the more uncomfortable ABs in the game right now……he throws so hard but he’s also got just a hint of wildness sometimes still that’s scary if you’re up there hitting …..plus he’s huge

  225. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 9:57 pm

  228. hardwired7 June 17th, 2014 at 9:59 pm

I’d be OK with Betances staying on the mound and pitching against the Yanks in the top of the 9th just to watch him pitch some more tonight.

    That was a clinic.

  229. blake June 17th, 2014 at 9:59 pm

@jonmorosi: Masahiro Tanaka’s ERA is 1.99. Turns out, he was under-hyped during the winter. One of the best rookie seasons I’ve ever seen.

I think folks undersold just how effective a good split is in MLB…..and his is exceptional…..his fastball was also undersold because it’s not ordinary at all….

  230. J. Alfred Prufrock June 17th, 2014 at 9:59 pm

  231. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 10:00 pm

    ========================

His best inning tonight waswhen he struck out the side he did not throw a single fast ball. Opposing hitters have a 457 SLG against the 4 seam and 578 against his 2 seam fast ball. I don’t think the fast ball has been undersold at all, its his most hittable pitch, made less so by his unhittabe slider and split

” I don’t think the fast ball has been undersold at all, its his most hittable pitch, made less so by his unhittabe slider and split”

We heard all winter how his fastball was ordinary and straight etc…..it’s not an average pitch….he located it very well and he uses it to set up his other pitches…..he also can ramp up the velo and sink it…..just because most of his hits come off fastballs doesn’t mean much…..he doesn’t give up many hits. His secondary stuff wouldn’t be nearly as effective without a good heater

    OVER!! YEAH!! ROBERTSON!!

    blake June 17th, 2014 at 10:12 pm

We heard all winter how his fastball was ordinary and straight etc…..it’s not an average pitch….he located it very well and he uses it to set up his other pitches…..he also can ramp up the velo and sink it…..just because most of his hits come off fastballs doesn’t mean much…..he doesn’t give up many hits. His secondary stuff wouldn’t be nearly as effective without a good heater
    ===============

I think his fastball is average and the secondary stuff keeps hitters from doing more damage against it. So on this point I will disagree. Maybe I am wrong. Anyways, the package is awesome. Cy Young and MVP caliber

  248. Tar June 17th, 2014 at 10:16 pm

    Nice try Brett

  249. Unnamed June 17th, 2014 at 10:16 pm

Gardner should have gone all out for that ball because the run does not matter in any way.

    =======================

Actually they had good at bats consistently tonight..They didn’t scored as many runs as they should, but they had the right approach…That’s a plus nowadays.

    Bad fielding there by Gardner

  257. DocTodd June 17th, 2014 at 10:20 pm

Should have let Betances pitch the 9th

  258. blake June 17th, 2014 at 10:20 pm

    11-1 with a 1.99 . That’s nuts

  259. luis June 17th, 2014 at 10:21 pm

    Good night everyone

As a rookie (well sort of)…completely insane

  263. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 10:23 pm

Tomorrow back to reality. No Tanaka, no Betances :)

  264. pete22 June 17th, 2014 at 10:23 pm

Yankees 12-2 when Tanaka starts, 24-31 when he does not. Defines MVP

  265. Missing Cano June 17th, 2014 at 10:24 pm

when i watch the yanks awffense i am reminded of a line from the paul verhoven movie starship troopers the way the bug planet is described it sums up the awffense

“It’s an ugly planet; a Bug planet. A planet hostile to life as we know it.”

  266. Tar June 17th, 2014 at 10:24 pm

    Pete

He’s been the MVP, Rookie of the Year and CY young up to this point

  267. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 10:25 pm

I’m hard pressed to remember a pitcher who gets so much better after he gets hit a bit. It’s almost guaranteed.

  268. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 10:25 pm

It will be interesting to see how Whitley fares against the Jays tomorrow night.

  269. Missing Cano June 17th, 2014 at 10:25 pm

Should have let Betances pitch the 9th

girardi subscribes to larussa baseball each reliever is a set role no creativity with the pen rotation or lineup

  270. blake June 17th, 2014 at 10:26 pm

Dont think Tanaka will win the MVP in a league with Trout and Miggy …..but he’s certainly the current front runner for the CY and to start the ASG

Agree….I almost expect him to pitch well at this point but yea this will be a test

  272. Tar June 17th, 2014 at 10:29 pm

I’m not a Cervelli fan but calling him up was the right move….. for different reasons. JR gets some regular playing time, hopefully Cervelli increases his trade value, and I think Cerv is probably a better 1b back up then Johnson is… I hope he is anyway.

I hope its short term, and pays off in a nice trade for the Yankees.

  273. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 10:29 pm

Missing Cano, I was thinking the same thing, especially if Betances is considered unavailable for tomorrow.

  274. Unnamed June 17th, 2014 at 10:31 pm

    When the night has come
    And the land is dark
And Tanaka is the only light we’ll see
    No I won’t be afraid
    Oh, I won’t be afraid
Just as long as he stands, stands by me

  275. austinmac June 17th, 2014 at 10:31 pm

Big win as is each Tanaka start. I love how he gets better as the game goes on. The second time against Tanaka is no easier than the first.

Now, if we could score some more runs.

  276. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 10:32 pm

You don’t have Betances pitch three innings. He already is 3rd in the AL among relief pitchers in IP.

  277. blake June 17th, 2014 at 10:33 pm

How many games has Tanaka given up a homer early and then shuts it down after that

  278. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 10:33 pm

Blake, Tomorrow’s game is a big test for Whitley; the Jays are probably the best hitting team he has faced and I believe it is only his 2nd start at YS.

  279. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 10:34 pm

Blake, I think Tanaka has given up 2 leadoff HR’s.

  280. bruceb June 17th, 2014 at 10:35 pm

Acid test is how we do the next two nights…you almost put a Tanaka start in the win column before the first pitch. Nice luxury to have, especially with our offense.

  281. JimK June 17th, 2014 at 10:37 pm

I should add, and did not allow another run.

Yea they have a lot of guys that can do damage…..he will need to really use that CU to keep them off balance

  283. I Am Winning June 17th, 2014 at 10:42 pm

I’m not a believer in Whitley or Pelphs. Tomorrow will change my mind on him one way or another. Hopefully for the better. Nuno is a lost cause, I see nothing from him.

    =========================

Blue Jays are mired in an awful hitting slump. They have scored only 2.2 RPG the last 11 games.
Lind is also questionable. Sometimes its not who you play but when you play them.

  285. MTU June 17th, 2014 at 10:49 pm

    Like I said.

    Tanaka needed to pitch backwards.

Reyes was sitting dead red and got a FB up.

Pretty much his only serious mistake.

Only 1 run on a night when he did not have his best stuff.

    Guy is truly awesome.

And it looks like we answered a question about the 2nd time thru the AL East.

    ;)

  286. austinmac June 17th, 2014 at 10:52 pm

    MTU,

I did think of you when the first pitch fastball was hit. Also, you said three runs would be enough. Please let me know the winning lottery number.

  287. MTU June 17th, 2014 at 10:55 pm

  289. bigdan22 June 17th, 2014 at 10:56 pm

A good night for the young Yankee pitchers. All are passing the audition this year:

–Tanaka taking the torch from CC as the new Ace

–Betances is baseball’s new late inning assassin.

    –Drob succeeding The Great Rivera.

Now if we can only see a little of that with the offense. Over in the land of the hitters, down by one run in the top of the ninth, Pirela and Refs both single, Almonte walks (on base three times tonight) and Sizemore with the game-winning single.

If you are not hitting homers, not making outs is the next best thing for an offense. A lesson the major league club would do well to learn. Especially McCann.

  290. MTU June 17th, 2014 at 11:00 pm

    McCann is a disaster.

And you can’t put a Tanaka out there every night.

This offense has to start producing so that our starters have some breathing room.

    We’re waiting…..

  291. yankeefeminista June 17th, 2014 at 11:05 pm

Unknown, couldn’t have scripted it any better. ;)

  292. MTU June 17th, 2014 at 11:07 pm

Tanaka will just keep breaking records.

    No reason he can’t.

He’s the complete package and is as smart as a whip out there.

Lot’s of weapons to go with it.

Only concern I have is fatigue as the season wears on.

Yankees have been smart in the way they have handled his days between starts.

Easing him into the American routine.

He is the very definition of a Pitcher.

    Sweet dreams.

See you all for the breakfast club.

    :)

    YF talking to herself again.

  294. NYY_Girl_Penny June 17th, 2014 at 11:13 pm

    Brian McCann for June -

    AVG OBP SLG OPS
    .190 .261 .214 .475

total of 8 hits! he not bad, he is seriously one of the worst in all of baseball.. or actually he is the worst.

his contract is in the same boat as the worst signimg in NYY history. In this order: Pavano,Igawa, McCann, Arod.

Dunno what they are gonn do with jim, but those numbers dont even deserve to be in MLB.

  295. NYY_Girl_Penny June 17th, 2014 at 11:18 pm

Billy Crystal had a better AB then the majority of MCCann.. yanks need to drop this guy and let Frankie Cervie be primary C. enoughs enough, if anyone thinks McCann is going be better than hes shown your lying to yourself or just dumb!

  296. ScottinSJ June 17th, 2014 at 11:20 pm

Great performances as usual by Tanaka and Betances. But this team is not going anywhere with this offense, as embodied by the two failures, McCann and Beltran. I have not seen $30M+ spent so poorly. No way that this team can overcome their constant wretchedness.

  297. Barry June 17th, 2014 at 11:23 pm

    Penny,

Two weeks in June is neither the entirety of his contract nor is it eternity. Just two weeks.

  298. SweetSpot June 17th, 2014 at 11:35 pm

McCann was an excellent signing his start behind the plate is disappointing but I have no doubt that he’ll straighten it out. Tonight was a perfect example of how masterfully he handles the pitching staff. Couldn’t be happier he’s on the Yankees.

  299. NYY_Girl_Penny June 17th, 2014 at 11:40 pm

Penny you are so negative, such a fatalist!
I know, but im rarely wrong.. and always call it for what it is. I don’t sugarcoat what is or lie to myself just to be right like some!

Yes Penny you are right about McCann, you were the first to see it.. K Long will fix him! Even if Girardi still thinks McCann is a phenom!

you probably still believe in santa clause and the tooth fairy.. your opinion means nothing to me.

lol @ masterful he handles pitching staffs ace. after all we have so many winning SP’s. remarkable!

keep telling yourself that mediocrity is acceptable..

  301. NYY_Girl_Penny June 17th, 2014 at 11:46 pm

P.S. McCann 17mil for 5yrs with no trade.

currently the worst C offensively in MLB.. great signing? yeah.. if your playin for draft position!

  302. NYY_Girl_Penny June 17th, 2014 at 11:49 pm

Yankees 12-2 when Tanaka starts, 24-31 when he does not. Masterful McCann LOL !

    seriously trish stop it.

You’re the most negative poster on this blog you bring it down completely, you’re one of the reason so many people have left and you know nothing about baseball otherwise congratulations.
