BLUE JAYS (43-35)
Jose Reyes SS
Melky Cabrera LF
Adam Lind DH
Edwin Encarnacion 1B
Colby Rasmus CF
Dioner Navarro C
Juan Francisco 3B
Kevin Pillar RF
Munenori Kawasaki 2B

LHP Mark Buehrle (10-4, 2.32)
Buehrle vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:07 p.m., MY9

WEATHER: Always nice to have the dome.

UMPIRES: HP Toby Basner, 1B Scott Barry, 2B Jeff Nelson, 3B Laz Diaz

REVERSE SPLITS: It’s a left-handed hitter against a left-handed pitcher, but Ichiro Suzuki has terrific career numbers against Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle. In 57 career at-bats — most career at-bats vs. Buehrle of anyone on the current Yankees roster — Ichiro is a career .421/.424/.474 hitter. Only two extra-base hits, but a ton of singles against him. Not in the lineup tonight, though.

KEEP IT CLOSE: The Yankees are an MLB-best 22-11 (.667) in games decided by two-or-fewer runs this season. They are also an MLB-best 38-7 (.844) when holding their opponent to four-or-fewer runs. So, if the Yankees don’t let their opponents score very much, then the offense can do just enough to win.

PRODUCTIVE PIECE: After last night’s home run, Mark Teixeira has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games. He’s batting .279 (12-for-43) with seven runs, two doubles, three homers, nine RBI, five walks and a .360 OBP during the stretch.

Got a good feeling about this game, or maybe its my fear of implosions

  2. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:10 pm

    Might be the latter, pete.

  3. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:10 pm

Ditto on the good feeling thing, pete :) too bad it wasn’t the weekend for me.

  4. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:12 pm

Maybe the error will be key here. Lord knows we need to score early.

  5. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:13 pm

    Nope

One more bad game and this place will implode.

    Meh, I doubt it.

A lot of us already had tempered expectations coming into the season so this team playing .500 ball the last 2 months isn’t exactly shocking.

Those bridge jumpers who generally just participate in the game threads don’t count because they’re idiots.

Of course, if you know better , there will be no implosion.

  8. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:16 pm

This is the first time I’ve had an interesting season since, ’93. Maybe if Carpenter had been retained and Escobar had worked out, things could have been different. Carlos Delgado was a pleasure, though, and Shannon Stewart was an exciting young player for a while. Shawn Green really didn’t carry his career through after leaving.

  9. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:17 pm

    Tight zone tonight

  10. andrewmelillo June 24th, 2014 at 7:18 pm

Joe Wants to talk about cc comeing like hes gonna save the season maybe if he hits

  11. rm June 24th, 2014 at 7:19 pm

    Nice play by Tex

  12. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:21 pm

Even without making the playoffs, I would choose the old AL East. Back in the eighties the meanie owner of the Maple Leafs, Harold Ballard, had Toronto shifted into a weak division that didn’t make rival sense,…all for the sake of a few playoff gates, the team stunk anyways, and it was all Ballard’s fault. At least George won.

  13. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:24 pm

Good inning for Phelps. Go away with one with Encarnacion though

Maybe you can pinpoint the so-called experts on here. Most of the idiots here spend their time attacking each other. I think that’s the sport of choice, rather than baseball.

  15. rm June 24th, 2014 at 7:25 pm

Good job by Phelps. Time for Soriano to start one of his hot streaks

  16. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:28 pm

McCann is comfortable against Buehrle. Likes those soft tossers

  17. mick June 24th, 2014 at 7:28 pm

    Scott

As long as we are civil with each other there will be no problems.
You will have to ask Franco who these experts are.

  18. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:28 pm

Jansen, Rasmus and Melky are all free agents after 2014. I can’t see the Jays signing all 3. Jansen is a keeper, I’d sign Melky and resign myself to Gose in centre.

  19. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:29 pm

    C’mon Solarte!

  20. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:30 pm

Roberts has been getting some hits. His trade value will never be higher

  21. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:30 pm

Well, they are getting opportunities. RISP hits eluding them yet again.

  22. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:33 pm

Melky and Rasmus will be in great demand given the dearth of decent hitting OF’ers. Toronto is going to have to show them some money if they want to keep any of them

  23. rm June 24th, 2014 at 7:34 pm

    Phelps looks good tonight

  24. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:35 pm

Randy Johnson struck out 19 A’s in ’97, and lost 4-0. Holy smokes!

  25. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:35 pm

Stacking the lineup with LHB’ers against Phelps does not seem to be paying off

  26. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:39 pm

I’d love to know how Joe chooses between the slumping Solarte and the unimpressive Johnson. I think Solarte may have gotten the nod today because he finally broke that huge oh-fer last night. Then again, not much to choose between.

  27. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:39 pm

Unless the Jays work magic with both Kevin Pillar and Gose, pete, Rogers is going to have to spend some of my phone plan ( they already have more than enough ). They could have at least left the dome rightly named Skydome btw.

  28. Hankflorida June 24th, 2014 at 7:41 pm

Pete, two hits and no score. Do we continue to call this team The Bronx Mini Bombers as they can only score with the four baggers especially with the bases empty and “Only a few good men.”

  29. mick June 24th, 2014 at 7:44 pm

That Skydome is quiet like a morgue.
Been there live so I know..

  30. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:45 pm

Bronx Chokers work for me Hank. That’s mean I guess, but clutch they are not, at least not often enough

  31. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:46 pm

Hats off to those making it to the dome through the present hell zone that has become Toronto’s traffic movement. And still, they allow the lakefront to be disgraced by cheap glass condos, more and more…

  32. mick June 24th, 2014 at 7:46 pm

    wallace matthews @ESPNNYYankees

I asked Ichiro tonight about not starting vs. Buehrle. He said, “On the record or off?” Then he laughed and said nothing
    =========================
    Wally has cajones.
Now someone needs to ask Girardi about a 1-2 of Ellsbury-Gardner.
Or has Gardner become the perma-leadoff man?

  33. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:46 pm

    ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:39 pm

    =============

He has them on a strict L-R platoon, despite the fact Solo is much better from the right side

  34. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:47 pm

With the top of the order starting to struggle, scoring becomes even more problematic.

  35. mick June 24th, 2014 at 7:48 pm

It really wouldn’t hurt Jeter’s legacy to drop him in the order, tho Girardi thinks he’s the best man for the job (right?)

  36. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:48 pm

Oops, mean Solo is better from the left side against RHP’ers

  37. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:49 pm

mick, the best Jays fans I met were when I did a lot of Ontario country Sunday yard sales back in the late nineties. People sat there in their lawn chairs selling fifties ceramics, all the while avec Jays radio.

  38. mick June 24th, 2014 at 7:50 pm

    mills, sounds quite american.

  39. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 7:51 pm

Girardi probably knows Jeter will be his boss one day as the future owner of the Yankees. Jete would have to approach the Mendoza line in BA to get dropped. Most fans just focus on BA and are deceived by Jetes BA, but more advanced stats tell the true damage of him being in the 2nd spot

  40. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:51 pm

” Kowasaki let’s the good times roll “

  41. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:52 pm

Hitting the light-hitting Kawasaki is not what you want to do.

  42. mick June 24th, 2014 at 7:53 pm

I don’t even look at Jeter’s BA in this situation.
I look at what is the best lineup and Ellsbury-Gardner is logically the best facing lefty or rightys. IMO

  43. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 7:53 pm

mick, some of us aren’t so far removed. Kerouac had Canadian roots, albeit of la French variety :D

  44. mick June 24th, 2014 at 7:55 pm

mills, still don’t get you not liking Joni as she was a fellow canadian

  45. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 7:55 pm

Kay sucks when the team is winning, but when forced to fill air during lousy baseball, he’s God-awful.

  46. Hankflorida June 24th, 2014 at 7:56 pm

Pete, we all want this team to be a contender and get to October, and I do not care if they do it as the Bronx Banjos or Bronx Mini Bombers. Right now without too many clutch hits, I am hoping that the pitching can keep us in the game even it means Betances replaces Nuno because CC coming back will not give us the dominant pitcher that we need with Tanaka. Again, think Koufax and Drysdale and small ball.

Squat, who is hoping Pineda fails? Name names, please. TIA.

    Well…

    J. Alfred Prufrock June 24th, 2014 at 9:55 am

He’s in the majors, and he has contributed to a couple of wins. Where have you gone, Michael Pineda?

I mean really, as soon as Montero gets a few at bats and Pineda is down, we start this?

Maybe Chip “started it” but come on…

Uninspiring is being kind and is an insult to those who are merely uninspiring.

  51. mick June 24th, 2014 at 8:01 pm

    is unwatchable better?

  52. bbb51 June 24th, 2014 at 8:01 pm

I wouldn’t be too upset if they tried Pirela at 2B instead of Roberts, but everyone seems to be thinking he has to be at least as good, but he could in fact be worse.

I’m a lot more interested in Refsnyder though.

  53. mick June 24th, 2014 at 8:03 pm

this team needs the right FA’s.
    youth is a crapshoot.

  56. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 8:05 pm

Yeah, mick, unwatchable captures it. The thing is, some of these games are just so winnable.

It’s hard to fathom that this year’s team is worse offensively than last year’s, but that may very well be the case.

  74. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 8:16 pm

There is nothing as deadly as a 3 run HR except a grandslam.

  75. Pat M. June 24th, 2014 at 8:17 pm

Not sure has the make-up to do so, but someone needs to dust Navarro . Chump

  76. jlyanks85 June 24th, 2014 at 8:17 pm

Navarro acting like babe Ruth with his pose. I’d drill his fat donut a### next time he comes to the plate, but you know the yankees won’t.

  77. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 8:17 pm

    3 runs is not insurmountable.

  78. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 8:17 pm

Flaherty actually said that Phelps should stay with the fastball — that Navarro has been hitting the offspeed pitches. Oh well.

  79. jlyanks85 June 24th, 2014 at 8:18 pm

Only this Yankees team can follow up a dramatic win on Friday to playing unwatchable baseball.

Last years team was more watchable.

  80. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 8:19 pm

I’d primp a little if I could hit a ball as hard. Terrible pitch selection, he looked overmatched against the fastball, especially that inside FB that tails over the plate

  85. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 8:21 pm

Thing is last year the offense could play the injury card. This year, at the moment anyways , everyone is technically healthy. This is the roster Cashman gave Joe to start the season.

Pitching wise, yes, some injuries, but pitching has not been the problem

To quote the lyrics from a Johnny Mercer song, “When an irresistible force meets an immovable object, something’s gotta give.” New York fans are an irresistible force who will move Cashman back to the old version of the Bronx Bombers so something will give.

  105. ohengin33r June 24th, 2014 at 8:29 pm

Well it seems they’ll be back to .500 again by the weekend the way the offense still has decided to sleep in.

The only good thing is that all of the other MLB teams records are in the same arena, meaning no one has pulled a big lead like should be right now in this division.

Just think, Half and Hank are banking this year on the Farewell Tour and they should dump a decent fraction on another potentially useless player in the off season.

    Being optimistic anyways.

  118. SweetSpot June 24th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

Nobody’s running away with this division. It defies credulity and I don’t believe for a second that hitters like McCann Beltran and Soriano are going to go another half a season hitting like they have to date. .280 hitters don’t just become .220 hitters overnight. We’re well-positioned for the second half.

  119. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

Wow, what was Jeter thinking? :(

  120. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

    IF defense again

  121. Hankflorida June 24th, 2014 at 8:38 pm

In my day in the prehistoric era of baseball when a player changed leagues, he needed time to adjust to the new pitchers. I guess that Beltran and McCaan have passed that point and are ready to live up to their potential. If not now, when?

  122. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 8:39 pm

Jeter putting on a highlight reel right now. Just unreal.

you know, it’s natural for players to get old and physically decline. When they lose their baseball smarts, it’s a said thing to see. Routine play and Jeter turns it in to 3 more runs. Just pitiful.

  135. RYUKINGDOM June 24th, 2014 at 8:41 pm

  136. Captain Clutch June 24th, 2014 at 8:42 pm

Sad meltdown as Derek tries to do too much. When camp broke I thought the pen was the one area for real concern. However with the emergence of Dellin Betances and the way Giradi has shuffled those guys around they’ve become a strength for the most part. But man, aside from Texeria the middle of the lineup needs to wake up. The Captain says I’m sorry guys !!! Dinger

  148. rm June 24th, 2014 at 8:44 pm

1st and second. (Reyes on 1b) Hit somewhat deep in the hole, Jeter looks at 2b…(Reyes already there Big lead, no holding him on), look to 3b ( he’s close because it’s in the hole) Solarte not covering, throws to 1b safe.

  170. bruceb June 24th, 2014 at 8:51 pm

Hard to emerge from a slump when you have three AAA starting pitchers (at best) and absolutely no offense. You’re not going to score 10 runs…but you might concede 10.

It’s time for the front office to face up to reality. Beltran needs to go have his surgery and Cashman needs to go and trade whatever he can for a few younger players with some upside.

  171. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 8:51 pm

Next pitch to Rasmus..awful hanging curve that he smacks off the wall. The get Rasmus in a run down…with Jeter trying to hold the guy the runner at 3b. He runs the guy back to first… but inexplicably doesn’t throw it to Tex. Runner safe at 1b the run score from 3b.

Wonder why hitters fall flat on their faces when they come to the Yanks?….as a point my finger in his direction

Get rid of the bum already… It worked for the Royals having a new Coach and we technically have better hitters (by the back of their baseball cards anyways)

The biggest onus is on Jeter. No doubt he takes the blame.

I don’t know about embarrassment but playing 500 ball is not going to take them to the promised land. The bar is really low to win the division, they don’t need to be a 95 win team. 89 Wins probably gets you the division. That can certainly be done, if not by positive regression then by trade.

  186. Hankflorida June 24th, 2014 at 8:59 pm

The Bronx Mini Bombers score again on a home run with the bases empty. I prefer those bombs when the pitcher is bearing down, but that isn’t the MO of this team.

Tar I agree because we’re all taught that when a ball is hit everyone is moving especially infielders going to cover their respective bags. I think why everyone became spectators on that particular play was that they just figured that Jeter was going to make the play at first. Frankly, that was the play if second wasn’t going to happen. Third on the rug is no option with 2 outs. # 2 went dark for a second…

  199. Tar June 24th, 2014 at 9:04 pm

Roberts and McCann have Jete’s back

  200. beedogs June 24th, 2014 at 9:04 pm

2 outs and runners moving on contact. You throw the ball to first base. Solarte’s reaction is irrelevant in light of Jeter’s geriatric brain making a fundamentally wrong decision.

    Pat M

I agree I think he thought he was further in the hole than he actually was. Saw Reyes, saw the runner go by and figured he could make the play at 3b. but then he was dead meat.

Maybe he has some doubts about his arm. But very unlike him. Just kind of pointing out that his teammates could have helped in that situation… but they didn’t.

  206. mick June 24th, 2014 at 9:09 pm

Jeter has been nursing the ball over to 1st all year.

You were poorly coached if you were moving anywhere toward the dugout before the play ended.

On another note…this has been a really nice comeback.

I trust jetes baseball instincts – he looked towards third because the runner was barely halfway between second and third it was the short out and the easiest way to go.

  240. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 9:23 pm

Maybe those Jeter brain farts have galvanized this team. Soriano getting a hit doesn’t happen just out of the blue.

Mordot, I wasn’t poorly coached, in fact I had some awesome coaches, but I knew my SS was going to first or 2nd, because that’s what’s taught at a fundamental level. WTH Jeter was doing looking at 3rd with two outs is beyond me. Makes me think his arm hurts or something. No one would ever tell a SS to throw behind a runner for the 3rd out.

  247. mick June 24th, 2014 at 9:25 pm

Solarte was playing him way off the bag.

It was not Solarte’s fault in any way.

  250. Tar June 24th, 2014 at 9:27 pm

When the ball is hit you break… to cover your bag, to take a relay whatever. You do not just stand there with men on.

Jeter looked at 2nd and got surprised at reyes being there already. SO then it was panic move and he could have had him at 3rd… but Solart wasn’t there.

    It’s Jeter’s fault… but Solarte didn’t help.

  251. Michelle B. of Yankee Stadium West June 24th, 2014 at 9:27 pm

No way that play is solarte’s fault. Not in one million years is that his fault. That ball was hit closer to 2nd, you never throw behind therunner when you can make a clean throw to first.

  252. SweetSpot June 24th, 2014 at 9:27 pm

I watched the replay Solarte was plenty close to the bag to go there and take a throw. He was heading for the dugout because he wasn’t paying attention and he made a mistake. I’ve seen the third out made at third-base in that situation countless numbers of times.

  253. mick June 24th, 2014 at 9:28 pm

No regard for where Solarte was playing?
He was WAY off the base.
No chance to get there even if he was moving.

  255. Pat M. June 24th, 2014 at 9:28 pm

Michelle. That individual ( Mordot ) took your comment way too literally. Derek Jeter is my favorite player ever but I think he just went blank for a moment. Two outs on the carpet third baseman is playing deep off the bag and in the hole.

  256. SweetSpot June 24th, 2014 at 9:29 pm

Alright I’m done arguing with you all, have a nice night. I’m headed out to dinner with the fam. But, I’ll say it one more time, that play was on Jeter, he had a brain fart. Fundamentally, you never throw behind a runner, ever, too much can go wrong….

  271. Tar June 24th, 2014 at 9:36 pm

    Michelle

I agree about the play at 3rd. usually happens when it is the ONLY play to make. The reason Jete did look at 3rd is (IMO!!!) was because he looked at 2nd and Reyes was there. That really surprised him. Than he’s thinking I don’t have the time to 1B (he did), saw the runner cross in front of him and said I can get him at 3rd, But Solarte wasn’t there.

Thats my story and I’m sticking to it.

  272. Tar June 24th, 2014 at 9:38 pm

One can say Solarte should have been at 3rd…and at the same time say it was Jeter’s fault.

  273. rm June 24th, 2014 at 9:38 pm

    =================

Gehrig only played 8 games in his last year before he was benched. Mantle and Dimaggio remained effective hitters even in their last year. Mantle was actually the best hitter on a bad team in the year of the pitcher. Neither hurt their team at the end. Jeter has not played nearly as well.

  298. Jerkface June 24th, 2014 at 9:51 pm

McCann just missed his third hit of the night against a tough lefty he’s really starting to get his stroke down.

He is hitting .200 in his last 6 games .161 in his last 9, .186 in his last 12, .182 in his last 20, .218 in his last 69. Hitting .500 today, he only needs to do that for the next week or three before any proclamation of him getting his stroke down can be made.

Sometimes a multi hit game is just a multi hit game, and when a guy is struggling as badly as McCann is he needs way more than 1 in his past 6 games for it to be any kind of trend. He was 0 for his last 9 coming into the game.

An old soldier like our beloved Jeter is playing his heart out and all of us should allow him to leave the stage with the respect and dignity he deserves.

what about the way the Yankees honored the guy that started it all

“In 1931, when Babe Ruth was 36 years old, he hit 46 home runs, had 163 RBIs and batted .373.

The Yankees rewarded him by cutting his salary from $80,000 to $75,000 for the 1932 season. That year, as a 37-year-old, Ruth’s numbers slipped — to 41 homers, 137 RBIs and a .341 batting average. So they cut him to $52,000 for 1933.

In 1933, the 38-year-old Ruth was clearly finished: a mere 34 homers, 103 RBIs, .301 batting average.

For that miserable production, Ruth was forced to play the 1934 season for $37,000.

Ruth, of course, is not the only Great Yankee to have been chewed up and spit out at the negotiating table by the front office of the World’s Most Successful Sports Franchise.

By 1958, Mantle had led the league in home runs three times, been an MVP twice and won the Triple Crown three years earlier. But in that season, although he led the league with 46 home runs, his RBI total tailed off a bit to 97, and his batting average dipped to .304.

So the Yankees lopped $3,000 off his $75,000 paycheck for 1959. That year, Mantle dropped again, to 31/75/.285.

And then so did his salary, all the way to $65,000. It took a holdout and a 54-homer season in 1961 to finally get him to $100,000, the most he ever earned in a season.”

  350. J. Alfred Prufrock June 24th, 2014 at 10:08 pm

Cano – you say right, sir. That’s like the wonky inning before he settles down and then rolls. I do think though he needs to add that change up back, especially if they’re going to have him pitch multiple innings.

  351. Captain Clutch June 24th, 2014 at 10:09 pm

Of course Tex gets all off speed pitches. What a surprise.

Thank god for Reyes blowing that play or it would be game over

exactly in my alt yankees universe Betances is just now settling down and he cruises through the next three innings it is the sixth inning where he is really tested again but he hands it over to the bullpen

meanwhile in the alt yankees universe Cano and Montero have both doubled tonight and Cabrera and Holliday have homered it is pretty exciting they are really taking it to the jays

What are you talking about? Betances IS the 8th inning guy. He pitched the 7th and 8th. The only reason Warren came in was it was a tie game and they aren’t using Robertson if it’s tied.

i tried this one in the future

future bigdan already replied that it was Warren’s overuse that led to Reyes double and how future bigdan says as he said in the past as past bigdan that Warren should be starting

i am beginning to think that bigdan has a time travel machine i mean he is always saying as i said before

  384. Brock June 24th, 2014 at 10:17 pm

Way to be guys. Way to be. Great job by the almighty Solarte that everyone has praised so much this year. Guess it’s not just Jeter.

  385. Captain Clutch June 24th, 2014 at 10:17 pm

Solarte makes too many mental mistakes at 3rd base. He acts like he has no idea how to play the position. He doesn’t cover bases and he has too many all around errors over there. It seems like his head isn’t in the game sometimes.

  386. Unnamed June 24th, 2014 at 10:17 pm

  388. jlyanks85 June 24th, 2014 at 10:18 pm

Roberts wasn’t going to lean his arm in to catch that ball after the injury he sustained on a play similar to that.

  389. ohengin33r June 24th, 2014 at 10:19 pm

Without the errors by the Jays the Yanks still lose 6-4…so no matter how you slice it they were almost destined to lose

  390. jlyanks85 June 24th, 2014 at 10:21 pm

Think it’s funny how tex makes that quote of how the team needs to step up, yet he ks in the 9th with the winning run on 3rd. So much for backing up your statements.

This team will find a way to break your heart especially after that comeback. Safe to say the Solarte star is fading fast.

  395. Tar June 24th, 2014 at 10:27 pm

Isn’t Solarte a 2nd baseman by trade? If so he gets a pass. Cashman on the other hand

    Good night for real

  396. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 10:28 pm

I don’t see where Joe failed here. Poor IF defense cost them 3 runs, and poor IF defense by the other team gifted them 2 runs. Jete and Roberts provided the long ball while the bombers brought the banjos

  397. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 10:30 pm

Adrian Beltre plays great 3B and then KJ and Solarte can move to their natural 2B position

  398. ScottinSJ June 24th, 2014 at 10:30 pm

They gave themselves a chance, but couldn’t execute at the end. Warren’s failures have made this bullpen pretty suspect.

a novel is correct i think we are on book 17 or 18 of his saga it rivals Harry Potter in some circles

one other observation given that bigdan is always “right” with his prediction he has either harnessed time travel (in which i am scared whether he has created some sort of time paradox) or he is caught in some sort of Groundhog’s Day loop replaying the same time over and over (in which i feel bad for him and hope that he is able to break free from the loop by learning an important life lesson like Bill Murray did)

a lot of positives in tonight’s game.

    1. yanks only lost by one run
    2. yanks mounted a ferocious comeback
    3. the team is still 2 games above 500
in the midst of the toughest stretch of the year.
    4. yanks did not let Bautista beat them!
    5. Capt Jete shows the flames has yet been perished in his wonderboy!

Jeter’s mental error gave the Jays 3 runs though. Maybe the Yankees win 4-3 without those and the Jays physical errors. Physical errors happen to everyone but mental errors like Jeter’s are worse even though they don’t show up in the box score.

  403. bigdan22 June 24th, 2014 at 10:33 pm

Sounds like all you guys are thinking of me! I’m so flattered!

Well, I haven’t seen the game yet but from Gameday it certainly looks like infield defense cost the Yanks today. Jeter and Solarte. Hard to overcome what maybe 4 runs by the D?

But I’ve said all along, when it comes to defense generally, there’s a whole lotta netting going on and without Toronto defense fails the Yanks wouldn’t have tied the game. And as I’ve also pointed out on many occasions, while infield defense fails rarely factor heavily in the game results, fails in the last three innings are likely to be much more impactful because of the lack of outs remaining to compensate. And Solarte’s error tonight certainly fits that case.

Well, in a long season, a .500 teams will lose some games via defense and it certainly seems tonight was one of those.

But cheer up! The two culprits tonight won’t be playing 3rd or short next year. Yes my friends, the Yanks will have brand new infield next year so you won’t have Jeter and my boy Solarte to kick around anymore lol!

And BTW, warning on Warren. This is two straight bad appearances. Has he been over-worked? If the bullpen starts failing this isn’t even a .500 team.

Because really, for this Yankee mediocre team to be competitive, it’s always been about the bullpen.

    Scott:

There have been way too many “tough losses” already this season. Only a week ago, the Jays came back from an 8-0 deficit against the Reds in Cincinnati. It’s been written here many times before but there are no moral victories in baseball.

For an offensively challenged team such as the Yankees, to score five runs in one inning and still lose is inexcusable.

You can blame Jeter for his two brain farts but the fact remains that having climbed the mountain, this offense fell off at the top.

All that momentum they gained last week has disappeared in the space of four days. And, unlike the Red Sox, I can almost guarantee that if they lose 10 in a row, they won’t be winning their next seven.

  423. Missing Cano June 24th, 2014 at 10:56 pm

    Cliff Lee’s potential ETA

Cliff Lee remains on track to return by the All-Star break, reports Corey Seidman of CSNPhilly.com. That would presumably give him at least a few starts to establish his value before the trade deadline (though it is fair to note that Lee could be a plausible August trade candidate). Seidman looks at the market for Lee from the Phils’ perspective, breaking down four possible trade partners (Yankees, Blue Jays, Angels, and Orioles) and what they might be willing and able to offer if Lee is made available.

  425. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 11:00 pm

This team is not taking on Cliff Lees 25 million dollar per year contract and a 12.5 buy out for 2016 with uncertainty about his elbow. Maybe the Phillies eat some of the contract but then the Yankees must give up more in return

  426. Cashmoney June 24th, 2014 at 11:01 pm

one more positive, Yanks also avoid using Drob.

  427. bigdan22 June 24th, 2014 at 11:08 pm

Now that we’ve dismissed with the flotsam and jetsam, this game, and the several before it, seem to be setting an ominous tone for this team. Ok, Nuno fails, we all expected that. But Tanaka wasn’t near-perfect Sunday like he usually is and they lost. The last two games the replacement starters, who have done so well up to this point, have had poor games. And now the bullpen is looking even more shallow than before.

Hard to say whether this team is on a precipice or not but they could use a win tomorrow. There is just so little room for error with this offense that the team needs consistently good starting and relief pitching and it needs to win almost all winnable games to remain competitive.

It may be getting late early out there.

  428. pete22 June 24th, 2014 at 11:14 pm

The other positive is no blog implosion as predicted by mick. I think expectations are so low now even die hard fans are rationalizing reasons such as this is not out year, injuries, etc and are looking to the future as many fans do when the present is so bleak.

While most won’t admit they are waving the white flag, many are sitting on it.

I do think there is some hope for this year, but it would require Cash and Joe to make some moves which might not go down well with those who dwell in the past or prefer to look to the future. Not sure they are committed to do so though.

  429. jmills June 24th, 2014 at 11:17 pm

  430. yankinvegas June 24th, 2014 at 11:18 pm

BigDan, I didn’t think that Phelps was that bad. Take away Jeter’s screwup on the grounder and he is clear of the 5th and if he had pitched a scoreless 6th it would have been a decent start.
The division sucks. Teams are going to consistently win a couple and Lise a couple until somebody makes a positive trade.
When a team wins 4 then loses 4 immediately, that is not a good team. That is a .500 team. That is the current NY Yankees.
The Mets spend 5 cents on their team and they are 3 games worse than us.
Tomorrow is a very important game. The difference between 4.5 and 2.5 is huge.
Toronto is not that good. Baltimore is not that good. We are not that good.

BigDan, I didn’t think that Phelps was that bad. Take away Jeter’s screwup on the grounder and he is clear of the 5th and if he had pitched a scoreless 6th it would have been a decent start.

    ——

Fair enough. He did give up a three run homer though and you usually lose games when you give up a dinger like that.

With this team there is so little margin of error. I’m not sure the rest of the division will be so accommodating the rest of the way. They may be. I just can’t help feeling that this team probably should be below .500 now and they are not only because they have been so good in close games and I’m not sure how long that will continue.

Now the flip side is, maybe Beltran and McCann start hitting and the offense just improves on it’s own and the Yanks don’t have to win close games anymore.

However this turns out, I think they’ve been pretty fortunate so far. Can they find it in themselves to take advantage of this good fortune is the question.

  434. NYY_Girl_Penny June 24th, 2014 at 11:27 pm

FORGET all the complaining, and we should do this or that, and we need this or that, there is just too many gaping wholes.. I am going to generalize here until you what I want, what I desire more than anything regarding NYY baseball.

“I just want it to be fun to watch again ! ”

The last few years whenever i put the game on, i could be in a great mood, and almost instantly I am annoyed, frustrated, disappointed.. etc. For me to have not watch more than a few innings in the lat month is unheard of, but I frankly can’t stomach watching this team play anymore.

So again I say, “I just want it to be fun to watch” and no it’s not just about the W. Gardner & Ellsbury are always fun to watch, Tanaka is not fun to watch, but it is enjoyable (difference between fun and enjoyable) .. the other night’s great moment best of this year (Beltran’s walkoff) I felt that enjoyment I haven’t felt in so long.. probably not since Jeter hit his 3000th hit.

    “Fun”, anyone ?

  435. Cashmoney June 24th, 2014 at 11:27 pm

Better days are undoubtedly ahead, after absorbing all the positives the Yanks garnered tonight in a hard fought contest. This team is unquestionably galvanized by the indomitable wills of Tex and Jeter and WILL with resolute convictions that the NYY shall cut deep into the mediocre beasts of AL East in an indefatigable fury just as the opponents try to laid low this slumbering beast.

    Onward and Upward, go Yankees!

  436. bigdan22 June 24th, 2014 at 11:32 pm

“bigdan, its been a weird season. Guidry is my favourite Yankees starter of all time, and of course, Dave Stieb is the same thing over here.”

    ——

Gator was great. I remember seeing him from the bleachers in Yankee Stadium get lit up as a kid before Sparky taught him his slider. And watching him on TV in his 18 strike out game. I remember Stieb very well as well. Didn’t he have a bunch of one-hitters? Did he have at least one against the Yankees? I think I remember some Yankee breaking up a no-hitter of his. Was it Stankiewitiz (sp?)?

  437. NYY_Girl_Penny June 24th, 2014 at 11:32 pm

I love Cliff Lee in his prime, but the last thing the NYY need is another Injury-prone player.. Ughh!

Yankee’s need to sign frankstein, humpty dumpty, fat albert, richie cunningjam, curly stooge, and stewey from family guy! That’d bring back some joy :) Am I right Billy? c

  438. NYY_Girl_Penny June 24th, 2014 at 11:34 pm

man my mic for audio-typing sucks.. I can confuse the heck out of it by saying

    here, hair, hear, bear,beer,bare

    that’s fun :)

  439. Tabbert June 24th, 2014 at 11:36 pm

I really thought after the Mccann rbi and then the Game winning homer by Beltran, that everything was going to start turning around. The two new guys came up with huge hits, and it just seemed that everything was about to start clicking. Four days later…. four losses in a row. This team has played like a .500 team all year, and there is no reason to think anything will change. Like big dan as been saying, this is a transition year, regardless of what people want to think. Not a rebuild year, a transition year. Going into last off season, i Viewed this as a two year process. Just no way the Yankees could have filled all the glaring holes on this roster in one winter, despite the money spent. Play the youngsters and reload in the off season.

  440. exiledintampa June 24th, 2014 at 11:52 pm

Stewey could use his time machine and bring back Jeter in his prime.

  441. Ys Guy June 24th, 2014 at 11:54 pm

On friday cliff lee said that his elbow is not 100%, yet they went ahead with today’s bullpen session. i wonder why…
…maybe because with absolutely no setbacks now, he can possibly get in 3 starts before the trade deadline. If they waited any later, he’d probably be pretty much untradeable at the deadline.

doesn’t sound like something i’d want to buy in on…
