I still want to see how he holds up as his innings increase

I’m actually happy for Ramirez he got sent down. He clearly was in the “red headed step child” role in the Yankees pen where he’d get no work and then get a lot of work like the last 2 games.

The guy needs regular work and that should get him more consistent in the strike zone.

He’s got a cannon of an arm so he’ll be back. Hopefully, he responds to getting sent down like Nova did and work his butt off to come back.

It’s better for his development to be Scranton through the all star break.

Well yeah – there’s a lot of growing to be done between being a toolsy FSL pitcher and having those tools translate into something that resembles a ML pitcher, let alone Pedro Martinez.

This “young Pedro” stuff sounds like pimping pre-trade deadline.

They’re trying to get the Rays to give up Price or Cubs Smar-whatever.

    Something’s brewing.

If it was a Yankee scout I would agree – Heyman doesn’t say what scout made the comparison.

  10. Tar July 1st, 2014 at 4:19 pm

Tar….My impression was that Giradi was bringing him ( Betnaces ) along slowly allowing his to feel comfortable at this level…..Giradi’s bullpen management is widely considered one of his strengths. I can’t even imagine where the club would be without him

    Pat

I think Joe’s rep for being great with the pen was enhanced by having Mo and also DRob these last couple years. Really all he had to do was get to the 8th and any dope could have handled it. Good but over rated is how I look at it.

And I don’t buy for one minute he was easing him in he was making him earn it. This reaks of Joe’s circle of trust BS. Players like Stewie and Nixie are born into while Dellin has to earn it. Anybody who watched Dellin pitch once should have been able to recognize the talent.

Very discouraging to me how long it took Joe to come to his freakin senses.

    Chip,

We know Heyman will shill for Boras. He’ll do the same for the Yankees if they promise him the story.

I’m not saying Severino isn’t all that, I’m just saying when you throw a label on a prospect like that they usually get dealt. Montero was the next Pujols/Piazza at one point from unnamed scouts. Ed Yarnall was the next Andy Pettite then he got dealt. It’s all advertising.

  13. Tar July 1st, 2014 at 4:25 pm

My TV perusing is very limited at the moment, can anybody tell me when WC. Starts and is it on ESPN?

  14. jmills July 1st, 2014 at 4:25 pm

Tar, Alex Lifeson has come to his freakin’ senses. Foot pedals, the guy can do it all!

  15. Tackelberry July 1st, 2014 at 4:25 pm

Wouldn’t it be nice if he could get the opportunity to become a ‘young pedro’ for US, instead of another team?

  16. Tar July 1st, 2014 at 4:26 pm

I have to agree with G Love. Something is fishy about that tweet.

Pruff. You know the Yanks farm system, who do you think they’re going to call up and why ??? Tar, I think Blake pointed it out very well, Giradi is in a tough spot when it come to the bullpen. His club needs wins, the rotation ( aside from Tanaka ) doesn’t provide length as they’re now at that 1/2 pole…..His rep for pitchers goes back to his days with The Marlins and some felt it cost him his job because he wouldn’t go to the whip when The Marlins were in the hunt. He did score the Mgr. of the year and then the Yanks gig.

  20. G. Love July 1st, 2014 at 4:28 pm

    Tackelberry,

Absolutely. I’d love a young Pedro. I just think when labels get attached to prospects it’s usually because they are being shopped. The timing of this is curious.

And I think the Yankees should sign Chris Capuano and stretch him out in AAA. Boston just dumped him. If Whitley is turning into a pumpkin, we need more depth.

  21. Chip July 1st, 2014 at 4:30 pm

Seriously though – I think there’s a difference between saying that a guy’s motion and assortment resemble that of a young pedro and someone saying that this guy is going to have the career of Pedro.

For example, if you watch Banuelos pitch, the delivery looks kind of like Johan and like Johan he features a fastball/change as his primary combo. I don’t think that’s the same as saying that Banuelos is going to be one of the best pitchers in baseball when he gets to the majors.

There’s one farm kid that Epstien wants that Cashman isn’t willing to give up but no name is mentioned. Asked Steve ( wanzies ) about this but he too hasn’t heard a name. Don’t really hear much until the local guys come home for the break and then there’s a little more banter . But info is so much tight lipped today even compared to 5 years ago

  24. Shame Spencer July 1st, 2014 at 4:37 pm

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Betances throwing 100 big league innings this year… I just think it’s kind of ironic that starters we have going now never got that many with the big club in past years.

It’s going to be a major talking point in the off season if he reaches that number.

  25. Shame Spencer July 1st, 2014 at 4:38 pm

That mean though just a tie game or lead? What about we’re down by 1-2 runs and we need a crisis spot and a feral arm? Will Joe defy the Larussa book and use DRob out of context? I like it, but I rather doubt it.

    —————————-

Well he’s on pace right now to throw more ML innings than Chase Whitley and only 50 fewer than David Phelps.

It will be a talking point over the winter and it should be and for all the right reasons. The Yankees Forrest Gumped themselves into doing something right for a change with a pitcher.

Betances is gaining experience and confidence with his new mechanics at the major league level. He’s building up enough innings so that if the Yankees want to try him as a starter next year there won’t be any limitations on him and if it doesn’t work, they have a role for him that does.

  33. blake July 1st, 2014 at 4:46 pm

I mean why on earth has Robertson thrown 27 innings this year…..I know he missed a few game with the injury but he went an entire week healthy and didn’t even pitch! It’s crazy……the pen is thin….they don’t have the luxury of just pitching him when they are ahead in the 9th

I would like to see Burawa, Goody and the former “Little Pedro” Jairo Heredia on the move to help out the pen. I have no idea what Pinder is up to so can’t weigh in on him. Goody looks like he can bring it and Burawa has that 97 sinker. Heredia has very serious offspeed stuff, but not sure they’re content with his post shoulder blues fastball velocity.

I wouldn’t mind seeing any of those guys either – it will give the Yankees a better idea of what they have so they can make better educated decisions with Robertson and Betances – but if they’re going to sit like Ramirez did – then it’s better long term to have them pitching in AAA.

I mean, the fact is that next year the Yankees could say that they just want to let DRob walk and move Betances to the rotation and roll out a bullpen where Thornton and Warren are the only holdovers and Burawa, Pinder, Goody, Ramirez are key contributors.

  42. blake July 1st, 2014 at 4:55 pm

    ———————-

Girardi touched on it earlier in the season – because Betances and Warren were starters recently he’s ok with getting their innings up because he knows they can handle it. It also does provide the organization with options for both of them in the future as opposed to having them throw 50 innings in which case you’re consigning them to relief only unless you send them to winter ball to get more work in.

That said, there’s a fine line between trying to keep them stretched out and turning them into Scott Proctor and the Yankees have to be careful of that line.

Robertson was on the DL at one point this season ???? Well they’re going to need someone for a few weeks until J-Ram returns. Again I think the lack of length in starting assignments is draining the pen . I’ve seen patched up rotations over the years, but this Yankee staff is one for the ages.
