WEATHER: I think it’s always either too hot and humid, too rainym or too cold in this city. Tonight is leaning toward the hot and humid side. But I’ve felt worse.
UMPIRES: HP Cory Blaser, 1B Jim Joyce, 2B Doug Eddings, 3B Marvin Hudson
STRIKEOUT MACHINES: Yankees pitching staff has 776 strikeouts this season, the most in franchise history through the team’s first 91 games (previous high was 749 in 2012). The Yankees are on pace to strike out 1,381 batters this season, which would surpass the franchise record of 1,318 in 2012. Overall, the Yankees are fourth in the Majors in strikeouts behind the Rays (815), Dodgers (795) and Indians (790).
FROM THE TOP: Brett Gardner has reached base safely in a career-high 24 straight games with a plate appearance since June 13. It is the longest such streak by a Yankee since Robinson Cano reached base safely in 26 straight games in 2012. According to Elias, it is the longest such streak in the Majors this season out of the leadoff spot in any lineup.
ON THIS DATE: It was on July 11, 2010 that longtime Yankees PA announcer Bob Sheppard passed away at his home in Baldwin, Long Island. He was 99.
UPDATE, 7:14 p.m.: The Yankees have clarified the plans for CC Sabathia. He has already seen Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister and will visit Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Both appointments were made before the Meister visit, so the ElAttrache visit isn’t a reaction to anything he heard from Meister. Still unclear whether Dr. Andrews is going to be involved. Have to imagine he will be since he’s the one who checked on Sabathia’s knee earlier this season.
UPDATE, 7:31 p.m.: Relatively mild reaction to Roberts’ first at-bat, but he changed that in a hurry. First pitch he saw, Roberts crushed a home run to right field. It’s a 1-0 Yankees lead in the second inning.
UPDATE, 7:45 p.m.: Another home run from one of those weak-hitting Yankees infielders. This time it’s Kelly Johnson who’s gone deep for a 2-0 lead in the third.
UPDATE, 8:02 p.m.: Two-out single in the third inning is the first Orioles hit of the night. Kuroda’s been good.
UPDATE, 8:11 p.m.: An extra-base hit for Ichiro!
UPDATE, 8:22 p.m.: The Ichiro double went nowhere, and now the Orioles have taken advantage of a ball off Jeter’s glove and a wild pitch that McCann couldn’t contain. One run in and the Yankees lead is down to 2-1 in the fourth.
UPDATE, 8:29 p.m.: Two hit batters and two wild pitches for Kuroda this inning. The Orioles have tied it at 2.
UPDATE, 10:01 p.m.: Yankees third extra-inning game of the road trip and their fourth in the past 12 games. By the way, Derek Jeter and Brett Gardner are combined 0-for-10. Gardner’s on-base streak could be at its end.
