AlmonteLet’s see if the Yankees will use him this time…

Outfielder Zoilo Almonte has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To open a roster spot, left-handed reliever Jeff Francis has been designated for assignment.

Almonte is a switch hitter, but it’s perhaps easiest to think of him as a left-handed power bat. He’s shown a pretty consistent ability to hit right-handed pitching in the upper level of the minor leagues. In Triple-A this season he’s hitting .307/.350/.558 against righties (but lefties are crushing him to the tune of .200/.268/.293).

Despite that success against right handers — and despite the Yankees need for some additional pop in the lineup — Almonte’s had trouble getting much playing time during his previous call-ups this season. His big league numbers last season were underwhelming, and Joe Girardi seems to prefer keeping Ichiro Suzuki in the lineup rather than taking a shot on Almonte.
