Jacoby Ellsbury hurt his left ankle sliding into home plate late last night. No doubt that’s why Joe Girardi waited so long before posting a lineup for this afternoon: had to find out whether Ellsbury could play. Could make a case that giving Ellsbury a day off at this point in the season isn’t the worst thing in the world — he’s played a lot and could probably use a day — but the timing is not ideal. Consider…

1. In his last 11 games since August 19, Ellsbury is batting .455 (20-for-44) with eight runs, one double, one triple, four home runs, 11 RBI and six stolen bases.

2. Ellsbury has been successful in each of his last 13 stolen base attempts since July 18 and has 37 stolen bases this season, which is second in the A.L. and fifth in the Major.

3. After struggling on the road much of the season, Ellsbury’s been tremendous this road trip. In these past five games Ellsbury’s hit .500/.478/1.136 with four home runs. For the year he’s hit just .253/.303/.413 on the road.

4. In 11 career at-bats against Toronto starter Drew Hutchison, Ellsbury has hit .455/.417/.455 with five hits and no strikeouts.
